I love everything about this. Kindergarten can be scary for many kids. They're spending a long time away from their parents for the first time in most cases and, on top of that, they're going to be asked to do things they might not know how to do or might not even want to do because they haven't been taught to do so. Preparing them for it should not only be part of raising them as a default but it's also a responsible thing to do. You can't expect them to magically learn everything they have to do in 1 year. Teachers aren't magicians. Good performance at school, in all aspects, starts at home.

When I went to kindergarten in 1985, all i remember is that we sang some songs, took naps, and played outside. Im constantly surprised at the expectations placed on these small kids. Not that all of it is wrong necessarily but it so much more accelerated than before.

It was much more developmentally accurate. Today's society devalues being a child. Sadly, that is a time we cannot go back to once gone.

My daughter flunked KINDERGARTEN. They don’t seem to be learning days of the week, calendar, weather, shapes, etc. She’s expected to write FULL sentences, count to 100, decompose numbers, and know 150 sight words! My poor girl now hasn’t had a great start with academics and doesn’t seem excited anymore.

So appreciate your candor. Honestly but respectfully telling parents what needs to be done. I’m on my third child and haven’t heard such a clear concise explanation of what kids need. I think school over complicates either on purpose or unintentionally making us feel inadequate. I can do it. Thank you for encouraging us parents. I’m glad you have started a book business and teaching courses, I think your next or future steps will be starting a brick and mortar school. Training teachers and teaching students. Dept of Ed and public schools are a goliath with red tape and rules that children and education are no longer the priority. They’ve lost their purpose. God bless you and wish you success. I’m learning so much from you already. Thank you for helping parents be successful so their children can be successful.

I have 2 kids who have completed kindergarten (they are starting 1 & 3 this year). The writing demands in kindergarten are much higher at the end of the year than being able to write first and last name. By the end of the school year they are expected to write sentences… which includes being independently responsible for spelling sight words accurately and spelling the sounds in other words (inventive spelling). Writing your first name is expected upon entering kg, last name will come in the first month or two of kg. Just wanted to add that for parents… the writing demands were way more intense than I anticipated.

    • @toddlerscanread
      @toddlerscanread  Рік тому

Yes you're right. I focus a lot less on writing in this video (and leave out a LOT of other standards that kids need to learn.) But the expectations by the end of the year are definitely higher than a lot of folks realize- especially in writing.)

Exactly! My twin boys started half day PreK 3 at 3 years old. They both were doing great 100% in their monthly assessments, but one of the twins' was struggling to follow directions and stay seated in the carpet during reading time. They are both twins, but like any other kid, different characters. I decided to withdraw both because I was called twice to go pick up the troubling twin. I felt that he wasn't ready and he and I were suffering with the pressure of the school. This video is right on. My kids at 3 years old were already expected to do all this as mentioned. I was so proud to see them go into the classroom and put their stuff away at their desk. Everything was almost great. Please work on all this as parents, because if not everyone will suffer, even the teacher. ❤️❤️ Good luck! 🤞

As a mama that has been engaging my son in Montessori learning this goes right along with the Montessori way. Teaching the child the sounds first rather than naming the letter. We are a homeschool home and we are now diving into reading in preschool. I will be engaging in your videos to give me confidence as well remind me of things I’ve learned but have forgotten. From one home to another. Thank you for the work you are doing.

This has been so helpful. Something that I find, with respect to the point of following instructions when your child doesn't wanna do something, is that they may respond to me and respond to another adult in authority differently. My child knows that he's in a safe space at home and so he expresses himself by crying or melting down sometimes. I know that when he is with another adult, he will follow directions. So, to the parents who feel like their child may need to practice this, also take a look at how they respond to other adults in authority. They may have this skill even if you think they may not.

Being able to follow directions is so so important. I had to quit being a pre-k teacher because I had 4 & 5 year olds hitting, punching, and screaming at me when I would give them very simple tasks. They did not respect me as the leader of the room and I could tell that their parents hadn’t socialized them well. My mental health couldn’t handle it.

I really wasn't prepared for Kinder as a parent. It's the setting up phone reminders to make sure she has a snack, water, homework in her homework folder, i-ready minutes completed, her library book returned on Friday and just keeping track of it every day. I mean I used to think packing my gym bag the night before was a big deal. 😅
Luckily my daughter has transitioned well for the most part. She's quite nerdy and loves school. I'm just worried about my 4 yr old. The younger child can be such a wild card and so different from the firstborn. 🤣 I'm pushing her now to learn the letter sounds so she doesn't fall behind b/c I just don't know.
Anyways thanks again for the content! I do hope your channel continues to grow and gets pushed up in the algorithm!

Interesting as a quiet and shy kid I wasn’t ready for kindergarten. I remember some things about my kindergarten year. My teacher was Ms/Mrs Wilkening(no coaching to remember her name over the years it’s just I remember her name by myself). My mom told me, as an adult, I’d come home sad or crying because I didn’t like being tall because people who pick fun at me or I didn’t like always being the last person in line. I remember we’d walk across the street from the kindergarten building to the other elementary classes. I remember it was dangerous doing that and didn’t like it.

I agree the school needs to do do better about sound teaching not ABC songs.
The school system needs to change.
What they did was give us site words the 1st day of pre kindergarten.😮😮😮😮
That’s crazy no my kid didn’t know how to say any of the words.
It’s like give me words in Chinese and I’m supposed to go home and learn it.
Never seen the words & don’t know how to sound it same thing.
LAUSD stop teaching like that it doesn’t work.
The kids here in Los Angeles are not reading at grade level 😢😢😢😢.

    Let the teacher teach
Help parents too to teach at home.
