The energy was off the charts, and it was awesome to see the influence of those classic punk vibes come through. Huge shoutout to all the other bands that brought the heat tonight-Cleveland knows how to throw down! 🤘🔥"

    Highly illuminating on SLAYER …
    MY 1ST EVER taste of SLAYER was when No Mercy was playing on a friend’s BRO’S cassette radio. I really wasn’t even in to MUSIC @ all. I was a Baptist KID. The album cover FREAKED ME OUT.

    Loving this very complete Slayermentary Jimmy, awesome job brother!
    I’m absolutely a big Slayer fan since the 80’s. Experienced them several times live through the decades both in Europe and the US, and there is just no other live band experience like it imo. Pure raw intensity. Especially the moshpits lol! Feeling fortunate that i saw the original line-up couple of times. They will always remain absolute thrashmetal legends and huge influences no matter what people think off them.

      Ed - you rock brother! That is so cool that you got to experience the show's first hand (sounds like the mosh pits too haha)... I'll bet they were freaking brutal judging by some of the video footage I have seen of the mosh pits at their shows. I like the fact that the band remained unapologetic all through their career. They tried new things, but it wasn't necessarily to be trendy - I didn't get that vibe anyway - but more to expand on what they were already doing. What a career they had. Thanks for sharing your experiences man always great to hear from you! 🤘😎🤘💥💥💥💥💥💥💥

    I always thought KK doesn't get the shine for innovation he deserves. Eddie has the finger tap randy has the harmonics, but that is following musical structures. KFK has the dive bombs(pull up on whammies, stuff like the AOD , solo) and utter destruction, no musical theory. Like Coltrane on Acid in the end , he went beyond structure into oblivion.

I have a photo of him and Kerry playing together, my friend took it) Saw them at another festival with Primus & I think Helmet maybe Prong & maybe S.O.A.D. so long ago, God Hated tour and I think that was it. I think the band always did Lombardo wrong. I never paid attention to what any drummer was up to before the title track to Seasons in the Abyss. I'm no drummer so I have no idea how difficult it is to play but it amazed twelve year old me. It's difficult for a drummer to be central to a band's sound but I believe Dave is someone that had a big impact on Slayer, not to take anything away from others who manned the kit, but Dave is just that good and should have gotten an equal slice of the pie.

    • @guitarmeetsscience
      @guitarmeetsscience  4 місяці тому

      You bring up an interesting point - considering the intensity of slayer's music, Dave was the backbeat. That's a whole hell of a lot of work from behind the kit. From going over the story, it seems to me that life just kind of got complicated for him and for Tom as the years went on.

    I got South of Heaven after having Seasons in the Abyss and Show No Mercy for around a year and I thought it was phenomenal. War Ensemble is awesome but I never really liked their all out speed offerings. I preferred tracks like Dead Skin Mask, the title track from Seasons and Temptation, so South of Heaven had the band right where I think they excel the most, haunting, slow to mud tempo songs that ooze atmosphere.

I even learn som new things too. Been a fan of slayer since the winter 84/85. Those were the times, the timespan between late winter of 84 when i discovered Jump in The Fire maxi single all the way untill 90/91. That really was a smorgasbord of immortal band and albums. Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Voivod, Exciter, Death Angel, Anthrax, S.O.D., Destruction, Kreator, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Nuclear Assault, Helloween, Sodom, Sepultura, Venom; Mercyful Fate, Crumbsuckers, Razor and then some! I remember in 1985 I saw kerry king on a ladder, sticking his hand into a tree. I couldnt see why, but when i walked around to get a better view, i noticed a kid standing maybe 15ft away. This kid was crying, you know, snot running down his face. Couldnt have been more than 7 or 8 years old. After a minute of fiddling around in this tree, he pulls his hand back and i see that hes holding something that turns out to be a little kitten. Blows my mind, seeing the guy you wouldnt think that of him. Now he gets to the bottom of the ladder and says, "here ya go kid" and the kid mumbles some kind of thank you. I guess kerry didnt hear him because he yells out "YOU ALWAYS THANK SOMEONE FOR HELPING YOU" he pulls back his arm and, i shit you not, throws this kitten full force into this kids face. Killed the cat and knocked the kid out cold. He just lit up a smoke and walked away.

I didn't even know at the time that he was just playing totally atonal, Just had a sense. Yet on loudness "rock and roll crazy nights" their guitarist also dipped completely out of key for a moment and back in and to me it sounded like he played some kind of impossible series of notes that just sounded so damn cool. His solo album sucks. Its very typical and predictable.. Its all the rfffs that didnt make s;layer. Slayer lost me at South of Heaven. Reign in blood is a masterpiece/. Id neven say the heaviest album ever recorded.
