I've always said this album is the literal audio documentation of speedballs and crack cocaine put to tape. It's just so frantic and menacing. But for me, the unsung hero on this record is Gar Samuelson. The drums are musical, tasteful, and just swing so hard. No one did what he did within the context of metal at that time. There's a bootleg recording on UA-cam of his and Chris Poland's fusion band The New Yorkers from 1980 that's outstanding.
@@guitarmeetsscience actually pretty dam scary. Flots opened for a all ages show, Mega played, Then a local band Surgical Steel played, Mega payed yet again and we closed out the after hours portion of the show. During the second act Mustaine starts saying some very homophobic things about SS and their close friendship with The Metal God. That did not go over well with the bar owner or the guys from SS. Full on bar fight happened backstage and the Mega guys were thrown out on the street with their gear. We had to go on afterwards.
The songs on the album rock but the sound quality and mixing are just terrible. Also, Dave's singing sounds fucking awful. The whole album kinda sounds like a bootleg live recording, though I still sometimes listen to it for the overall vibe and the awesome riffing.
KIMB still gives me chills. The guitars are sharp as a knife and Chris Poland’s leads on the first two albums come off just as menacing as Dave’s solos. KIMB and PSBWB are my personal favorite period of Megadeth musically.
Both are total classics! You're right about Poland's leads being very menacing. That guy really has some great chops too, he and Dave were perfect compliments for each other. But as always - often times the perfect musical chemistry goes completely opposite of the personal chemistry. It would have been cool if that lineup would have continued.
I guess its a taste thing. I love Megadeth but the albums before RIP are just not for me. I like the singles from those albums but thats it. I keep thinking that one day Ill understand what people see in the albums from the 80s. Im a guitar player and love Polands playing on TSHF so I really wish I could get into the early stuff.
@cranklabexplosion-labcentr8245 I'd rather listen to Sabbath than bands that have built an entire genre on blatantly ripping them off. Sleep was aptly named. High on Fire, though....
@TedDiabetes you must hate most music then. Every metal band has at one point blatantly ripped off sabbath. Even sabbath blatantly ripped off themselves and bands like the who and the beatles (go listen to It's Alright). You can make the exact same argument about any genre doesn't even have to be rock or metal. Every single band has ripped someone else off musically at some point and made a career off it.
@@Vorticy135 quite the contrary. Melvin, Black Flag, and Soundgarden are all perfect examples of taking that influence and doing something organic and unique without blatantly ripping it off verbatim. It's not my fault you have bad ears and taste.
As much as I love what is considered the classic lineup with Marty Friedman and Nick Menza, this lineup is my very favorite Megadeth lineup. Gar Samuelson is still my favorite Megadeth drummer. This album is just so intense. I absolutely love it.
Thanks for the video! This album deserves so much more attention than it gets, including from Dave himself. Since they're pulling out deeper cuts on this tour I'd love to see them play Looking Down the Cross or The Skull Beneath the Skin.
I was in college when I first got a copy of Killing Is My Business, having already been a fan of the band from hearing Countdown to Extinction, Rust In Peace and Peace Sells. Needless to say, I was completely blown away - there are so many great riffs and changes in all the songs. My friends and I always joked that other (lesser) bands would have taken the riffs that comprised this album and made like 5 different albums (with songs that just had fewer changes) haha. I still think this album is perfect from start to finish!
Wow! What a story. You should do one on why Neil Schon is spending $10,000 a week on American Express and it cost the cancellation of the Journey European leg with Def Leppard because the card is maxed out at $1,000,000. I miss the days of your guitar jams but your move to this format paid off superbly.
Lol The journey drama - awesome idea, but I don't think I could keep up with the developments lol. Those guys are always going at it. Thanks Albert - doing the jamming stuff was fun for sure, so are the little mini docs in their own way. It's nice not having to get on camera, and it seems to resonate with some folks which I can't complain about either. I've thought about starting a branch off channel just for jamming stuff but honestly haven't had the time. Always great to see you drum prof - keep those jams a coming!!
Great video mate, really enjoyed this. I've owned and loved this album since about 1988 and even I learnt some new stuff. Ill definitely play it full blast this weekend!
Highly recommended you all to check out the newer "the final kill" remaster version of this album for a more detailed drum sound mix. But the original is one seriously great album as well 🔥❤️
Love your videos dude - just a minor correction! Its actually Dave M's solo on Loved to Deth 🤘. Got to cover this whole album with Kings of Thrash (Ellefson/Jeff Young/Chris Poland) and in my opinion, it's some of the more challenging material Megadeth has ever done! Very fun though to perform live 🤘
This is a Brutal first album that has so much aggression behind it. I'm so glad they kicked Dave out of Metallica or else we would not have had Megadeth 🤘
Exactly - I think that story alone was able to actually help both Dave and Metallica reach new heights. Granted, they couldn't go on - but had Dave stayed in the band Metallica might have remained in relative obscurity. Or really would have been one of those bands that had such a cult following.
I still think this might be my favourite Megadeth album. Whilst I do like RIP and CTE, the first 3 albums have a much rawer & looser feel to them which I personally prefer. I just love the naive honesty of this record. Megadeth completely undiluted!
