I got this in like 1993 while visiting my grandparents. Was the first CD I’d bought, remember sitting in their baby blue bedroom listening to this over and over again. I’d started playing guitar earlier that year. 30 years later, I’m still playing riffs from this album. The best
No life till leather. Bay Area Thrashers. No life was a blast in Australia. If you had the tape you were my mate. It was so fast and furious, people hated it. Metal for ever. We are One under the black flag ✌️🤘🏴🎸🥁⚖️🇦🇺
I was a college intern at music America Studio when Metallica was recording there. I didn't meet them or know of them at the time, and then a couple years later I switched from music into photography and started working for Gary Heard, the photographer of the album cover. I saw the album on his Studio wall when he told me he did the cover after being asked by the bands producer Paul. Strangely enough years later while I was working for Kodak I got to meet Kirk Hammett and told him the story, he got a kick out of it.
The band that introduced me to heavy/alternative music. Most artists are lucky to have 2 or 3 great songs on an album Metallica nails every song , every album. To start your career with Kill em all, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, Justice for All and Black might never be duplicated as far as quality of songs
8:28, its third verse is really meaningful and if I ever talk to someone who thinks metal doesn't have any special messages, I'll show them Motorbreath.
Actually, while Kirk was copying Dave's solo in Hit The Lights, Dave was copying & guy named Lloyd Grant who originally played the solo. I'm sure Lloyd's solo is on YT somewhere.
To the guy who mentioned about diamond heads sucking my love you know your music most Metallica's early sounds came from diamond head budgie and sabbath
Metallica did a better cover of the Diamond Head song, however I too am not a fan of Diamond Head, they didn't go far. I am aware of Metallica's roots I even personally know some of the guys in the band or that were in the band. Jason Newsted came from Flotsam And Jetsam yep I know them, Rob came from Suicidal Tendencies, I know them as well, but i still don't like diamond head. I stay far from Lars and nothing against Kirk but Dave is GOD and a much better player in my eyes.
Not as much Budgie imo, but I'd say Diamond Head, Venom, Saxon, G.B.H, Mercyful Fate, Sabbath, Motorhead, Priest, Raven, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Blitzkrieg, Savage, Discharge, Thin Lizzy, etc.
The only time I saw them was at a Tower Records parking lot! It was the release of the Load album, but they didn’t play anything from it! Opened with Creeping death, seek n destroy, and a few others. They closed with whiplash!! Fucking crazy! They pulled up in a semi, dropped the side w a big ass Alcholica banner. That was in 98 ish. I still have the caution tape from the crowd control barriers!
The Four Horsemen was the song that made me a fan of Metallica when I was a kid. The first time I saw them in concert (Louder than Life Fest 2021), they played that song (and also played the entire Black Album in reverse sequence). It was a full circle moment for me, and it was very cool, especially since (prior to that show) it seemed like they don’t play The Four Horsemen that often.
That's the perfect track to get started on! That's great you saw them - I saw them a couple times and I must say that last year they were better than they were in the '90s. That band just keeps on getting better and better
Really the way I heard it from the Lemmy movie from the man himself is they where recording in England and got loaded every night so Lemmy's wondering where they got the time or where up to doing anything.
The One video and song is what turned me onto Metallica back in 88-89 era. I was 10 years old and had a music store next to my house and discovered Kill em All, as And Justice for All was new and sold out and besides at that time expensive. So I bought Kill em All and was instantly hooked. Such a great clean sound. The bass is audible and Lars has some good fills on this album. Believe it or not I think Ride the lightning was the last album at that time that I bought, one of the best for last. Seeing Metallica and Pantera this friday so it's going to be surreal 🤘🏼♥️
Right on - That is a great way to get introduced to Metallica. You are in for one hell of a show -I saw them last year and they were better than both times I saw them in the '90s. Have a blast!!!
@@guitarmeetsscience we've always had a pretty cool and eclectic local scene here. Brann Dailor and Bill Kelliher from Mastodon are local natives. They were in an amazing tech metal band called Lethargy. There's plenty of their stuff on UA-cam to check out.
My introduction to Metallica was Kill 'em All. A stoner coworker who was a few years older than me gave me a cassette recording and said it was way too heavy for him. I was blown away instantly! Way different from the music of the day I was listening to: Scorpions, Ratt, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Ozzy, Sabbath, etc. Total raw, adrenaline inducing power! Still love it today.
Awesome story! I can relate - I came up in that era too. And yeah, Metallica brought something new and raw to the table as opposed to all the more slick and polished bands of the day. Thanks for sharing the memories - that's awesome!
Rochester is a great music city. Lived there most of my life. One of my earliest music memories was finding out Metallica recorded Kill em All there. One of my last was handing out with Danny Lilker at the Bug Jar.
Thank you so much - I didn't know it so well before this video so honestly, it just took a lot of digging. You probably inherently knew a lot more than I did. Thanks for the kind words bud I appreciate it
The chemistry was so much better once Kirk got in. I really think he played a big part in the band finding success because he got along so well with them. And really I'm sure it actually helped Dave's success as well in a roundabout way.
It took a few minutes, but got what you meant in the end. A bloody silhouette, with "his" head facing right, towards the hammer and the hand pretty much bottom, centre. Maybe not their intention, but an interesting take. Did you see that from the beginning? Was wondering if you meant perhaps with the eyes, dotted (pupils), either side, or the two white spaces towards the left corner as eyes. That would have been some stretch though.
13:40 * cracks knuckles * Actually the riff from E1M1 in Doom is based on Master of Puppets according to the metadata found in midis from obscure version of the game for IBM's OS/2 operating system. Been browsing Doom wiki for some time 😂
If I could go back in time I would definitely see Metallica for their first three tours …luckily I was able to see them in concert for the And Justice For All tour
I would never say Dave isn’t a phenomenal writer and guitar player, but I’m tired of people acting like he wrote their first three albums when what actually happened was he wrote the main riff for four songs on their first album and the main rift to one song on the second album, and there was a very, very small part on master of puppets that is in debate, whether they intentionally ripped him off or not. Keep in mind this riff on master of puppets isn’t the main riff to the song it’s a part where the song is changing from one place to another it last all of a few seconds. I don’t think they would intentionally do that considering they gave him writing credits and make sure he gets paid royalties for the other songs. People pushing this narrative are either uninformed or they just hate Metallica and want to do everything they can on the Internet to make them look bad.
I love Mustaine..🤘🤘🤘 and his firing from 'Tallicre was undoubtedly one of the hardest to swallow next to Pete Best levels of annoyance.but i could never completely defend his blubbering on Some Kind of Monster..
My bud Bill Sutherland turned me onto Metallica in early '84. I went to see them open up for Ozzy in '86 for The Ultimate Sin Tour in Saginaw, MI. Metallica was the bomb 💣💥
That is awesome! They still tear up that stage - saw them last year.... James was getting over being sick, didn't take away from the show one bit. Truly a great band!
In 1983 I was a freshman in high school when I bought this album published by Megaforce records. I just remember my friend laughing at their pic on the back saying he saw zits. lol Anyway.. the music blew us away and when we saw Ride The Lightning we couldn't buy it fast enough. It wasn't long after that they signed to a major record label and the word was out.
Right on - it's a great memories with those albums for sure. Lol yeah I could see that about the zits. I remember being taken aback by how differently they looked - because most of our introduction was through Master of puppets when they had grown up a bit by that time. Thanks for sharing that - Ride the lightning rocks too!
Thanks man - he's not exactly in the Guthrie Govan League, but he does bring a lot of heart and soul into it. When I saw them last year he put on a hell of a show.... Really him and Lars both are entertaining as hell live.
You learn a Hammet solo like Ride the Lightning and you're ready to play lead guitar. Simple as, regardless of what people like to say. We all started with Fade to black or whatever early Metallica solo one prefers, and thats way more powerful than whatever Malmsteen clones were doing at the time, or restless Polyphia clones do these days etc.
Definitely a life altering event or events as being around twenty at the time Kill Em All and Ride The Lightning came out. There Was kind of a malaise of Punk, Hardcore and Metal at the time that was getting stale. Gave me a whole new reason to avoid the real world and become a Thrash Metal head. Luckily we had Banzai Records in Canada that pretty much put out all the greatest Metal of this time. Was fortunate to see Metallica in 85 in what was still by future standards a small venue. Saw them again and again as it got bigger and bigger.
Real KILLer video Jimmy! Fascinating story and docu without a note of their music, and still fascinating. Lars won’t be coming after you.🤘🤘Right on my friend, good job 🔥

If I were to pinpoint the exact moment when Metallica took a turn for the worse, it's the first time they were photographed without at least one member wearing a Misfits or Samhain T-shirt.
I remember buying this album when it first came out. I had heard Metallica on one of the “Metal Massacre” compilation albums . Then I got a copy of the demo tape. I knew they’d blow up. Everyone of the hair metal kooks were like “that thrash is just a fad” 😂. 40 years later Metallica still packs stadiums and are worth a billion dollars. I loved everything up to the black album. But they lost me during the 90’s. Pantera kept me going during the 90’s. They did a reverse Metallica. Metallica started off heavy and looked like real metal heads. Then started wearing makeup and crap during the 90’s. They turned into the posers they hated in their early days. While Pantera started off as a glam band and shed their gay hair and clothes. And each Pantera album just got heavier and heavier. I still go to Metallica concerts. But they aren’t cheap anymore. 😂. The first time I saw Metallica it was 12.00$. The last time I saw them it cost me 700$😂
My first discovery of Metallica was when Master of Puppets came out... I was 15. Then I went back and bought this masterpiece and Ride the Lightning. It's hard to pick a favorite from those first 3. It can change day to day, but those first 3 albums are just pure perfection.
dude phantom lord is actually one of the best songs by metallica, prob best on the album. idc what anyone says, its the most underrated met song (other than low man's lyric"
saw an intervjue with Lars about this not long ago. He said that James answered his ad and they met up, but didn't hit it of at all, so they went separate ways.. And Lars went home to Denmark for a while.. When he came back, to the states a friend of his had started a record company and he was about to release a compilation album with the bands on his label. Lars asked if he could join that album, only he didn't have a band.. So then he thought about James, and gave him a call. James came around, and that's when Metallica started mostly as a cover band. only Americans didn't know that, because they where covering European bands that Americans didn't know about, and they didn't say that they played covers.... it became a problem when they where about to seal a record deal, because almost every song they had was cover songs :) But looks like they fixed that somehow..
He's never said that, he said he wrote some music for the first album (4 songs), some music on the second album (2 riffs) and claims a song on the third album which Metallica has denied
They treated Jason very bad and after decades Jason was just an employee to them. When Robert joined they gave him full partner on the spot. They suck as people
They realized how badly they treated Jason, which is why they gave Robert partnership. They also realized that you have to treat your bandmates as entities and not hired help, which is how they treated Jason.
dave had issues getting along cus drinking but i'm guessing they didnt like him cus he would fight and when he did he would win. glad dave got kicked out so we had two great bands instead of one. once kirk joined, the band was packed with talent but that was a major loss when cliff died he was very good at writing music. the producer mad a big difference also when they got flemming rassmusen the producer is more or less part of the band but noone knows it. i like bob rock and he did some nice producing tricks but it just wasnt the same

Right on - they both go hand in hand perfectly!
I got this in like 1993 while visiting my grandparents. Was the first CD I’d bought, remember sitting in their baby blue bedroom listening to this over and over again. I’d started playing guitar earlier that year. 30 years later, I’m still playing riffs from this album. The best
Lots of memories with this one!
Intense as hell. Brutal but musical in a way that few other bands could comprehend. The first 3 (5) albums 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
No life till leather. Bay Area Thrashers. No life was a blast in Australia. If you had the tape you were my mate. It was so fast and furious, people hated it. Metal for ever. We are One under the black flag ✌️🤘🏴🎸🥁⚖️🇦🇺
Right on - you were one of the early adopters of early thrash. Hats off from the US 🤘🤘
I didn’t realize how important Hugh was. Hit the Lights and Motorbreath are my favorite songs from that era.
Both great tunes!
He's never claimed any part of them though
RIP ANGEL 😇
Thank you Dave
“Am I Evil?” or “Blitzkrieg”
@@FaultySporkMa yeahhhh 🤘
Blitzkrieg
I really wasn't expecting a video this good.
Thank you so much man!! 🙏
How freaking cool is that! Thanks for sharing that 🤘🤘
The band that introduced me to heavy/alternative music.
Most artists are lucky to have 2 or 3 great songs on an album Metallica nails every song , every album.
To start your career with Kill em all, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, Justice for All and Black might never be duplicated as far as quality of songs
Exactly - that's one hell of a way to start a career
Might want to mention the track "Am I Evil?", which was only on certain runs of the album.
Great track
@@guitarmeetsscienceI came here for the lessons of that song. Great video!
Thank you man!! 🤘
Diamond head🤘
The Diamond head cover? Didn’t that end up on Garage Inc?
Still my favorite Metallica album. Very raw and kinda punk rock
Punk definitely had an influence on thrash for sure
always bin my favorite Metallica . I mean really, seek and destroy is just the ultimate metal song& anthem❤
Started listening to them when I was 11, been obsessed since. I'll always love these guys!
8:28, its third verse is really meaningful and if I ever talk to someone who thinks metal doesn't have any special messages, I'll show them Motorbreath.
Love this style of video dude! This format would be great for Anthrax's debut as well!!
Thanks for the kind words man! Anthrax is awesome definitely on the bucket list for sure!
Actually, while Kirk was copying Dave's solo in Hit The Lights, Dave was copying & guy named Lloyd Grant who originally played the solo. I'm sure Lloyd's solo is on YT somewhere.
I heard the debut of Seek & Destroy on the metal hr radio show when Kill em' All came out I was 17 . It started my metal journey to this day at 58 🤘
What a perfect start to a metal journey - right on! 🤘🤘
They were menacing and frighting. And they are classic!
Thank you for your service in the forces and in metal🤘🏿
They've been quoted as saying they wanted to put two 'heads together to create their sound. The two "'heads" being Diamondhead and Motorhead.
Damn that had to be an awesome experience!
Wait until you hear James sing the mechanix haha it’s weird
And when they do they usually cut out the mellow bridge section.
6:44 look at Cliff! What a monster!! 😳😳 what a special talent the world was robbed of...
Gone too soon 😔
@@guitarmeetsscience Thanks dude 🤙🏾♥️
2:44 makes me love Dave even more! 😢
Oh yeah - I would react the same way if somebody did that to my shih Tzu!!
Recorded in my hometown of Rochester NY.
Nice! Great music scene in New York or at least there was when I lived there. I lived on Long Island.
Still one of their best albums after all these years! It’s up there w/Ride the Lightning, puppet, & Justice albums!🤘🏾🤙🏾
Rochester is a great music city. Lived there most of my life. One of my earliest music memories was finding out Metallica recorded Kill em All there. One of my last was handing out with Danny Lilker at the Bug Jar.
Very cool!
Don’t forget that the Seek and Destroy solo took heavy inspiration from Saxon’s Princess of the Night
Yep - good point
Bro they flat out plagiarized the shit out of that solo 😂
dont forget the "rust in the eye" in the uhaul to new York ....story !!
Oh darn now that I think of it - yep.... Lol it's always after I get a video up that I'm reminded of these things. Thanks bro
this shit was recorded in my city and it's my biggest flex
Right on haha - valid flex 💪
Yeah buddy!!! Rochester New York.. it’s my flex as well.
One of thrash metals finest albums. Still one of my favourites,we used to throw that album on and go nuts lol. Whiplash is a killer track.
Oh yeah! Whiplash total classic!
I thought i knew the Metallica Lore but you proved me wrong, Keep it up man, Very soothing and interesting listening to

Dave leaving the band and kirk joining the band was the best thing to happen for metallica. I love Dave, don't get me wrong, but kirk was it.
The chemistry was so much better once Kirk got in. I really think he played a big part in the band finding success because he got along so well with them. And really I'm sure it actually helped Dave's success as well in a roundabout way.
Very good video. Highly recommend watching it if you're a fan of Metallica weather it's new or old this is a great video to check out . Nice job dude
Thanks brother 🤘🤘
That picture on the album looks like a kid with a hammer in his head while doing the shhhhh thing with his finger.
Lol now that I look at it that way you are absolutely right haha
It took a few minutes, but got what you meant in the end.
A bloody silhouette, with "his" head facing right, towards the hammer and the hand pretty much bottom, centre.
Maybe not their intention, but an interesting take.
Did you see that from the beginning?
Was wondering if you meant perhaps with the eyes, dotted (pupils), either side, or the two white spaces towards the left corner as eyes. That would have been some stretch though.

Actually the riff from E1M1 in Doom is based on Master of Puppets according to the metadata found in midis from obscure version of the game for IBM's OS/2 operating system.
Been browsing Doom wiki for some time 😂
Kudos man You know your stuff 🤘🤘
It was hell to listen to. It sounds like 70's rock. It's too slow for me to even consider it thrash.
It sounds like a good acdc album thats super proto metal but slow unlike megadeths first, hey wait thats the reason dave sped things up
If I could go back in time I would definitely see Metallica for their first three tours …luckily I was able to see them in concert for the And Justice For All tour
Great vid!
Thank you man!
Kirk was fresh in those days, Joe satch taught him some chops
That happened years later
Yes- mostly pentatonic scales in first album- but from ride the lightning on you could see his development as a lead guitarist.
@@SimonRefaloGuitaristOfficialHe still pretty much always stuck to minor, pentatonic, and phrygian

I’ve never thought much of Kirk from a technical standpoint, but his licks are creative.
You are crushing it btw, much respect.👊🏻
Thanks man - he's not exactly in the Guthrie Govan League, but he does bring a lot of heart and soul into it. When I saw them last year he put on a hell of a show.... Really him and Lars both are entertaining as hell live.
Kirky boi, until before Load and Reload, was a monster lead player, then he became lazy and repetitive, straight up lacking imagination.
You learn a Hammet solo like Ride the Lightning and you're ready to play lead guitar. Simple as, regardless of what people like to say. We all started with Fade to black or whatever early Metallica solo one prefers, and thats way more powerful than whatever Malmsteen clones were doing at the time, or restless Polyphia clones do these days etc.
it all started with "hit the lights".....first song to be officially released on a lp !!
The makings of History right there!

The last time I saw them it cost me 700$😂
Right exactly - it's amazing how much the price went up. We have the eagles to thank for that.
My first discovery of Metallica was when Master of Puppets came out... I was 15. Then I went back and bought this masterpiece and Ride the Lightning. It's hard to pick a favorite from those first 3. It can change day to day, but those first 3 albums are just pure perfection.
A got my intro with Master as well. I was like what the hell - on headphones nonetheless. Still crank them today just like back then 🤘🤘
dude phantom lord is actually one of the best songs by metallica, prob best on the album. idc what anyone says, its the most underrated met song (other than low man's lyric"
Hugh Tanner introduced Hetfield to Lars? I always heard that Hetfield met Lars through an ad in the recycler.
Yeah, same here - it was Lars' ad and James responded.
Errata..... Than you!
saw an intervjue with Lars about this not long ago.
According to mustaine he wrote their first two albums and part of the 3rd.
He's never said that, he said he wrote some music for the first album (4 songs), some music on the second album (2 riffs) and claims a song on the third album which Metallica has denied
Dave was kicked out when they were in NYC
Yep and sent on a bus back to LA
It should've been easy to make once in the studio though. After all, Mustaine had all the riffs written for them already.
All? He cowrote 4 songs 😅
They treated Jason very bad and after decades Jason was just an employee to them. When Robert joined they gave him full partner on the spot. They suck as people
Very true
To be fair, they matured. They publicly acknowledged they treated Jason bad, and went overboard to treat Robert the exact opposite.
I don't know why .. Jason was amazing at his job and band member!! Ego bs I guess
@@mixelplik aka bad people. When Jason wanted to return they didn’t think he would ever be a member
