I was lucky enough to not only meet him but hang out with him for a few hours. Deep down he had a tender heart and truly cared about people. I have a huge canvas print of him in my house. Next to Cliff Burton and Scott Weiland.
Man the detailed step by step of dime's murder was an emotional rollercoaster for me. So many emotions, but sheer anger more than anything else. Only solace we have is justice was swift.
Yeah man - of all the documentaries I've done this was the hardest one to do. I literally had to do that part first.... So chilling to relive that night. I agree - the justice was definitely swift, but even that came at a cost to the officers psyche. He really was a hero that night though no doubt.
This is one of the best rockumentaries on Pantera/Dimebag I've seen. Very well done. I met Dime and Vinny 6 months before Dime's death. Meant to be I guess. I love Pantera and loved Dime even more. He was so humble, inviting and such a cool MFer... He signed my arm (which I had tattooed the next morning) and took photos with me and the band I was with. I will cherish and never forget that brief moment in time... Fuck I miss Dime... And Vinny... Imagine what they would have been producing musically today...
Man!! thank you so much and thank you for sharing that! God I can't even imagine how close to home that must have hit. Considering that you met the brothers shortly before it went down. I remember how horrible I felt when the news hit, and doing this video was easily the hardest one I've had to do of all of these. Most are pretty easy, and I really enjoyed doing his story but the point where the heinous act happened was definitely really difficult to do. I truly appreciate your kind words and thank you so much for sharing your experience.
Excellent video on the best guitarist of the 90’s and in the top 1 of all time. Simply put I miss Dime almost as much as I miss my momma who passed around the same time. Dime was just a regular guy with incredible guitar skills.
My condolences about your mom. It really sucks losing a parent. I've lost both, so I can relate. When the news of dime hit - everybody was just floored. Such a sad day. Thank you for your kind words.
I enjoyed this Jim! I was one of those young 20 something’s that had the privilege of seeing Pantera as a bar band in the 80s in the DFW area. I didn’t know how lucky I was to have my first Air Force duty station in Ft Worth, Texas (Joes Garage was on the west side of Ft Worth actually) and got to see them jam and what a phenomenal guitarist he was. In the 90s I saw them live at huge concerts in Germany. So I’ve been a fan from way back! I think you described their evolution and their sound well. Thanks for this cool video!
Hey Rich - that is freaking awesome that you were able to experience that!! And then to catch them in Germany. Pretty darn cool of a must say so myself. Thank you brother!!
Dimebag - along with Kirk Windstein of Crowbar - is the reason I use a Randall now. I've always preferred solid state as well (they just work better for extreme/heavy music), but getting into Randall changed everything for me. Amazing amplifiers. RIP Dime.
Thanks so much. This was the hardest one to do - All it took was one one deranged lunatic to make some of the saddest history to date. I appreciate it! 🤘🤘
Thanks very much Guitar Meets Science 🤘 hearing you say Dime's playing WAS the pyro is so spot on and definitely put a smile on my face. Edit: i try not to focus on the end too much, still makes my blood run cold
Thank you brother! Dimes playing definitely was the pyro no doubt! Not going to lie - This has been the most difficult video of all the docs I have done so far. I had to tackle that part first to make sure I did it justice but also because it was just so damn difficult. Thanks for your kind words man - always great to meet a fellow dime fan 🤘🤘
Underrated and also influential - some of the smarter bands picked up on the sound they were putting down. I think it played a big part in shaping metal to come after that
It was certainly different.. I would've preferred Dave Williams on vocals (had he not passed), but Dime started blending tube amps (not just for clean parts) on that album.. and a "looser" feel. There were some good songs on it.
I remember the night that happened. Heard about it the next day. It just baffles me that somebody so heinous could do such an act to a beloved guitarist.
Huge Pantera fan here! I've watched, read, and listened to just about every thing Dimebag! I have to say that this video was INCREDIBLY informative! Lots of info I've never heard of, very fascinating stuff. Good job!
Yea man, great video, you put this together very well with details I haven't yet heard in others like it. I appreciate that kind of attention and care, it matters a lot. Now I know that psycho caught that blast of buckshot in his face, and that somehow feels like justice to me. RIP Dime, Vinnie, Mayhem Thompson, Nathan Bray, and Erin Halk. My condolences to Officer James Niggemeyer and his family, may he find peace within himself. 🙏
Thank you man!!! It was definitely justice - but definitely not soon enough. Out of all the videos I've done - this one turned out to be the hardest to do by far emotionally. Putting that segment together was just damn chilling to go back through again. I appreciate the kind words man and I'm really glad you dig this one! 🤘🤘
Another great video. Well done. I was recently turned onto your channel from your Van Halen series. You’re quickly becoming one of my favorite UA-cam channels 🔥🙌🏻
I remember when cowboys from hell first came out. Me and my three of my homies were driving around Manhattan. Listening to a station that played tons of heavy metal . I think they were called wsru pirate radio. Pantera was on there live doing interviews. Diamond Darrell (which is what he was going by then) said, anybody call in i bet i can play any van halen song. And tons of people were calling in a dammit he played all van Halen requests NOTE FOR NOTE!!! So hearing this we swiftly drove to tower records. Bought cowboys from hell, and when i heard,i believe it was the art of shredding or something like that i was hooked!!!
Oh man that must have been freaking cool! He loved Van Halen - It always hit me pretty hard reading that story about Eddie burying his prized bumblebee with him. That just brings it all home right there. Thanks for sharing that!
Nathan claimed that Damage plan was stealing metal riffs from in his head. Dude was whack, but I dont believe he said anything about Pantera breaking up, at least not before the event.

He was just Darrell the kid from down the street, lol. His guitar playing was something else, as he developed from "Diamond to Dimebag" he hit on something unique with his gear. I was a tube amp guy and hated his Randall tone but it worked for Pantera. Miss him and Vin a lot, cool guys and down to earth. RIP my friend

Great job breaking down his playing abilities and history, i feel the same . Pantera could've been the best of all time if not for animosity, drugs and alcohol, tragedy so we'll never know
I'm not a huge Pantera fan, Cowboys from Hell rocks, but Dime and Vinnie seemed like such cool people. True Rock and Roll diehards that left way too soon.

I smoked out with Darrell at the Ozzy/Exodus show in Dallas, I think 88. Saw them a couple of times at the Basement during their Power Metal album. Phil had long hair and wore lots of rings.
I'd always say to myself and my friends then since when I heard them for the first time that Pantera was the Black Sabbath of the 90's with heavier sound, modern Metal and fresh attitude for their period of time🖤💯 I saw live that ''94 summer tour with Biohazard and Sepultura'' opening for them it was a blast, life changing for real! I first heard "Cemetery Gates" on KNAC in 1990, as a sophomore in high school. Later that year, they toured supporting Judas Priest, and a couple years later, they were headlining. To say they were huge in the early-mid 90s would be an understatement, as they became torchbearers for metal in the mainstream after Metallica donned eye shadow and started pumping out radio-friendly corporate rock.

Very cool! Right in front too - best place to be. Must have been intense! 🤘🤘
I was lucky enough to not only meet him but hang out with him for a few hours. Deep down he had a tender heart and truly cared about people. I have a huge canvas print of him in my house. Next to Cliff Burton and Scott Weiland.
That is awesome that you got to meet him. By all accounts he was a top-notch guy. Such a big personality ... Such a big loss
Those other two mentioned Scott and Cliff in my top 4 or 5 rockers I would bring back if I could.😢❤
Man the detailed step by step of dime's murder was an emotional rollercoaster for me.
Appreciate you digging in on Pantera, Dime was the best of all time imo...those last two albums are really underrated
@@holtrain81 Thanks bro - oh yeah, the great southern trend kill especially. Just an insane piece of work all around!
Thanks for making this vid! He had such a raw and unapologetic guitar style. Really was one of the supers!
Thank you kindly - that is the perfect way to describe his style: raw and unapologetic.
Thanks for this GEM and the fact that is your real voice and not a AI voice over ! RIP Dime and Vinny
Thanks man. If mine were an AI voice it would be one busted AI lol. The Abbott Brothers we're unbelievable. RIP 🤘🤘
My favorite solo of all time!!!!! R.I.P Dime🤘🎸🎸
So much cool information that I wasn't aware before. Thank you for compiling this!
I am really glad you enjoyed this one. Thank you for the kind words - That truly makes my day!
Dimebag was the greatest metal guitar player RIP dimebag and vinne
Absolutely spot on 🤘🤘
Pantera / anthrax for my first real concert in the 90s was the peak of my life...
I will bet that was one hell of a freaking great concert too!
@@guitarmeetsscience life altering...
Dimebag - along with Kirk Windstein of Crowbar - is the reason I use a Randall now. I've always preferred solid state as well (they just work better for extreme/heavy music), but getting into Randall changed everything for me. Amazing amplifiers. RIP Dime.
This was a really awesome video, and i enjoyed it! Dimebag was a terrible loss, and there's no replacing him.
Proud to be Loud for sure. wish these guys were still alive
Oh yeah man same here. Knowing those guys they would have gotten more heavier and more intense. They never sold out - and only got better and better.
Nobody rocked like Pantera! I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard them. I'm a drummer and Vinnie was my favorite. RIP Abbott brothers
🤘🤘 both of the brothers brought so much to metal. This was the hardest doc to do because of what happened to Dime. RIP Abbott Brothers
Getcha pull!!!! Dime was my main influence playing guitar. Gone too soon. RIP DARRELL
@@Randy-g5q 🤘🤘
New Found Power is probably one of the best and most underrated metal albums of all time!
I can totally relate - heard about it at work. We were all shocked. This was the hardest one to do so far
Huge Pantera fan here! I've watched, read, and listened to just about every thing Dimebag! I have to say that this video was INCREDIBLY informative! Lots of info I've never heard of, very fascinating stuff. Good job!
@@sploob2773 thank you so much - is that really makes my day and is a huge compliment. I'm really glad you enjoyed it!!!
Really well put together video there man!
Thanks man That's a huge compliment!!! Much appreciated 🤘🤘
I got to stand literally in front of dime at a pantera gig, man he was cranked! So loud! But he was playing his ass off. What a legend.
That had to be pretty freaking awesome!!!
@@guitarmeetsscience they were great! Super fun
Great job!!! That’s how we pay tribute to a legend and help keep him alive for the next generation!
🙏 Thank you so much!!!! Dime was one of a kind
Pantera/White Zombie, 1996 i believe. Greatest experience of my life, I had just turned 15, man that show is burnt into my memory
I will bet - that had to have been a killer show!
the reason I play any and all instruments. 🤘🏻🤘🏻 the greatest musician of all time! (opinion)
Total inspiration! Thanks for sharing that man keep on rocking 🤘😎🤘
Wonderful sharing! Great job!
🤘🤘
Another great video. Well done. I was recently turned onto your channel from your Van Halen series. You’re quickly becoming one of my favorite UA-cam channels 🔥🙌🏻
@@erickimm5150 Hey Eric - Man that's what makes it all worth it right there. Thank you so much, I really do appreciate your kind words! 🤘😎🤘🎸
@@guitarmeetsscience I appreciate your videos. Keep up the good work.
Thank you man!!! 🤘🤘
@guitarmeetsscience your youtube family thanks you!!!
Right on brother 🤘🤘
Love the video man i am a massive Dime fan!
Thank you brother! Rest in power Dime 🤘🤘
Thank you. This was so good I watched it agian.
Thank you bro - that makes my day! Glad you enjoyed it!
Nathan claimed that Damage plan was stealing metal riffs from in his head. Dude was whack, but I dont believe he said anything about Pantera breaking up, at least not before the event.
Crystal meth makes you think like that, not joking either
This vid made me subscribe! Splendidly done! I love Pantera, love guitar & I love science! Great marriage of topics!
Right on brother that makes my day! Thank you!!! The channel was originally named guitar meets engineering, which is my actual day job - but it had too many syllables lol. I'll try to have more science stuff in the future somehow at least the science of guitar 🤘🤘 much appreciated and great to meet you man!
@guitarmeetsscience Great to meet you and stay ROCKIN'! I know you and Tom Scholz would get along nicely!
@john564holloway haha definitely! I would definitely have to find out how the hell he managed to come up with the rockman 🤘🤣🤘
Excellent take man!
I saw them open up for Skidrow in a little arena in southeast Alabama. They melted the paint off the walls! Brutal Bliss!!!!
I will definitely bet that had to have been brutal! Freaking awesome
I miss them both all the time. This was great. It brought a tear to my eye.
🙏🙏 Thank you so much. This was the hardest documentary to do - he died in such a senseless manner, but he will always be a legend.
Only Halfway Through and This is Amazing, I Didnt Know About Dimes Dad,Awesome Way you put This Together, Love Me Some Dime,You Rock GMS,Love This,Keep Rockin 🎸👊🎸👊
Thanks Rebel!! This one was hard to do when it came to that fateful night. Dime was such a fun loving honest hard rocking dude. I thank you kindly and keep on rocking Rebel!!! 🤘😎🤘🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
The BEST video of my entire day! Thank you!
🙏 Right on man Thank you so much that makes my day!!
Oh, man. There simply are not words in any language that can be used to describe this anomaly of a man
Never will there be ever be another like Dime
I know you’re resting easy, king
See you on the other side, brother
🤘😎🤘
i already knew this whole story and more, but you did a great job and i sat thru and watched it all. dime's my fav
Thank you so much - I just enjoy doing deep dives on these amazing players. His story was tough to do though for sure - reliving the end part. Such a shame how that went down
The solo from "The Sleep" on CFH is my favorite Dimebag solo
That is one sweet solo!
Absolutely no one! Can touch Dimebag Darrell Abbott! RIP Dime your greatly missed! But not forgotten!
Man I loved Dime!!Me and my X wife seen them in 1992,the good years😍🤩
Definitely the Good Years!!!! 🤘🤘
Great job breaking down his playing abilities and history, i feel the same . Pantera could've been the best of all time if not for animosity, drugs and alcohol, tragedy so we'll never know
Thank you - You are so right too. Had they have been able to get out from all of that they would have stuck together.
I'm not a huge Pantera fan, Cowboys from Hell rocks, but Dime and Vinnie seemed like such cool people. True Rock and Roll diehards that left way too soon.
Love this video! Brings back the good'ol days
Right on man!! It brought back the good old days to cover Dime. Damn he was incredible!
I got to see them on the “Far beyond driven “ tour with Sepultura and Prong . At State palace theater in NOLA!
Right on that's awesome!
I was like 16 when he died, had been playing guitar for a few years at that point in large part because of his influence. Rest in peace Abbott Brothers
Thank you for this video...and the tears!!
Thank you brother.... This one was the most difficult to do of the bunch. Such a tragic loss man
I smoked out with Darrell at the Ozzy/Exodus show in Dallas, I think 88. Saw them a couple of times at the Basement during their Power Metal album. Phil had long hair and wore lots of rings.
Pretty damn cool!
This was awesome man thx, lot of details.
Thank you so much I'm really glad you enjoyed it! 🤘🤘
I'd always say to myself and my friends then since when I heard them for the first time that Pantera was the Black Sabbath of the 90's with heavier sound, modern Metal and fresh attitude for their period of time🖤💯
I saw live that ''94 summer tour with Biohazard and Sepultura'' opening for them it was a blast, life changing for real!
And I got into whiskey(black tooth grin) because of Dimebag Darrel primarily🥃🥃🤘
I truly miss you guys Dime and Vince and thank you both forever for timelessness music and awesome memories... R.I.P🙏
🤘🤘🤘🖖🖖🤘🤘🤘 💫💥 🙌🙌🤝🤟🤟🤟
@@AndreLuis-oo6bf The Sabbath of the '90s - pretty spot on analogy. They really kept the torch lit for metal. Thanks for your comment man that's a great one!
The groove was real with later Pantera. Talk about metal, but there was a little blues/soul in there as well. You FELT the music, it was funky, and could pull a stank face like no other.
Absolutely spot on!!! Pantera could bring the stank face all the way.... That's funny because I always get it when I listen to there later albums. I'm definitely not the only one 🤘🤘
you forgot small detail when as a teen he won a Dean ML and his dad bought him one he sold one but got it back it became known as the Dean from hell blue and black one he's most famous for
@@Seven7Pain1 very cool - doing these is involved for sure.... Can occasionally miss something. Thanks for filling that fact in 🤘🤘

Thanks brother man rock on 🤘😎🤘

You nailed it on the head perfectly
Dime was unapologetically based. Truly a legend.
Greatest. Of. All. Time. Period.
My all time favorite guitar picker Dimebag. RIP
Nice job bro. Great doc.
Thank you so much bro I'm really glad you dug it! 🤘🤘
I saw Pantera at the 2000 Ozzfest in St.Louis...They were on the Main Stage.
Pantera just kept getting heavier and heavier.... Anti sellouts all the way 🤘🤘
A true master, groovy and powerful, unique…. A guitar hero fantastic
Dime is and always will be one of my main guitar heroes! I put him right up there with Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen.....in that order 😜🤘🤘
