The Mighty Dells were the best! That's back in the day when we use to slow dance! These guys go all the way back to the 50's! Love everything they recorded.
They're from Harvey, Illinois, a southern suburb of Chicago. They started singing in the 7th grade and preformed together for 60 years until the members started to pass away. Please take a deep dive into their discography.

The Dells have been making sweet music since the 50's. One of their 1st hits was Oh What A Night back in 59. There are many more like...The Love We Had and Always Together.
... it was '56, but who's counting. And then they topped themselves by doing an updated version (much different) in '69. If you don't check out both versions, you're sellin yourself short.
Why haven't I heard of these masters of vocal performers before today??? WOW just WOW!!! I thank you Jamal for opening my ears and expanding my mind and a BIG THANKS to whomever recommended this 👌!!! I'm off to Google to find out more!!!
"The love we had"was a huge hit for them when I was in high school. They don't make them like this anymore Jamel. The strong vocals and the harmonies by R&B groups is not heard much anymore. Thanks Willie G you have good taste in music.🎶🌴
This music is for grown folks only, now this is what you call old school. The Dells were the 70s group that were absolutely superb. Those were the days where you had parties in the basement with the red light bulb. "The love we had " is another goodie from their catalog. 💕
Jamal, if you're not used to that type of falsetto, you need to hear some Blue Magic (Sideshow, Stop to Start, I just Don't Want to Be Lonely)!!! SO GOOD!!!!
Oh yes! bring on the Old School! Love it! There's so much to choose from, it could be a channel it's self! What about Gene Chandler Rainbow '65, The ole Duke of Earl himself. And my second favorite Groovy situation 1970 Gene Chandler.. wore the record out! Çan ya dig it can you dig it? LOL
That note as you call it is real "sanging" those notes are pulled from the depths of his soul and it connects with your soul and you can't help but to take notice.
John E Carter sang falsetto, what range heaven only knows. Russell Thompkins from The Stylistics also had a high tenor/falsetto. Throw in some El Debarge too. 😆
Such marvelous harmonies and when the lead hols that note I get chill bumps on my chill bumps! Thanks for bringing back a wonderful memory. Keep on keeping on.
Thank you for reminding me why Soul and R&B are so important. This was a beautiful, fantastic song! And watching you react was fun! I was feeling those high notes along with ya!

Well you got your lesson this day & I do LOVE music too!!! Take a listen to some more Dells! “Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation,” “The Love We Had Stays On My Mind.” Oh & by the way, there’s a version by “Dru Hill.” And if you get a chance, listen to some, Luther Van Dross, “A House Is Not A Home.” Well that’s it!!! Yeah, man--the Dells! I heard them when I was a kid, early 70's--but they were around when my folks were in high school in the 50's--the Mighty Dells. No matter what era they are up-to-the-minute in the now. Another classic American group that always deliver !
Oh how I remember this song- such beautiful vocals! And the message is LOYALTY and LOVE and Vulnerability. Three alien concepts in our world today. Let's bring them back!!
The Mighty Dells, pride and joy of Harvey Illinois! They don't make 'em like that anymore. If you can believe it, they were founded in 1953 (I was 3 years old) and kept performing until 2012! This song was their biggest hit and it was 1968. I really regret that I never got to see them perform.
There was a movie out about the Dells called "The Five Heart Beats". The Dells had a big hit off of "Stay in my Corner", twice! They started in 1952, their first hit was in 1956, " Oh What a Night". The mighty, mighty Dells!!!
When I was in high school I listened to a soul radio station and every night they featured their "Royal Order Of Losers" and the last song each night was The Dells' "Stay In My Corner" at 10 pm so I couldn't go to sleep until it was done. LOVED that song!
Hi Jamel,, Please listen to Lou Christie. He has an awesome falsetto even today at 78 years old. He got his start in music in 1963 and was a teen idol. Please take a listen to some of his songs and start with The Gypsy Cried, then Two Faces Have I, then Lightning Strikes. Thank you. I love your channel and I love seeing all of your reactions. Thank you so much for providing us all with a lot of entertainment.
YES!! You finally did a reaction to the Mighty Mighty Dells....They have a Few GREAT songs to check out. I saw them perform live 20 years ago and they were STILL hitting those notes. One of the greatest vocal groups if all time . The Robert Townsend The Five Heartbeats is about The Dells
Great video and reaction!! It brings me back to one of my favorite concerts: I'm SO glad to have had the pleasure of seeing The (Mighty, Mighty) Dells (and I believe that all the original members were present, along with Blue Magic and The Chi-Lites), at a Mother's Day show at The Newark, NJ Symphony Hall back in the late 1980s. I grew up with their music thanks to what used to be called, "Soul Radio" stations back in the late 1960s and my mom and her mini 8 track "Greatest Hits" tape of theirs. The movie, "The Five Heartbeats" was inspired by their career and The Dells sung on the film's soundtrack as well.
I don't know what they call it today, but in my day, that high note was called "descant", which is higher than a tenor or soprano. Thanks Jamel, for this reaction! I knew who the Dells were but I had never heard this song before, and I'm 64!
I don’t know if I am strong enough to listen to this one today; was one of my Father’s favorites. God I miss him. I play this in the car when I want to connect with him…🦋
I got the chance to see them live twice. I’m from Berkeley, California. I saw them at.a small club in Berkeley, & at the Oakland Coliseum, which is now called the Oricole Arena. The brother you’ve heard is Johnny Carter. He was in another group for he came to the Dells. I think he came to The Dells about the early ‘60’s. Maybe 1963.
The sixties was a sugar pie. I loved the Dells and the Dellphonics back then. Falsetto voices in perfect harmony plying against deep male voices. Marvin Gay and Tammy Terrell were the cream of soul.
One soulful song..... When you get a chance listen to.... Oh what a night, by the dells. But they are amazing no matter what.... Ty for playing all your music
