I sold off my more higher end cameras and went back to this. It has most every function 99% of us will ever need. Great build, long battery life, top notch functions. Used it for over a decade without any issues
Cheers Richard, love my G10 and great to see a video on it in 2020. Have always loved the images out of this camera and like you, always kept it at 80 iso for cleaner images.
Thank you for this excellent review. I have just purchased one of these for approx 50 Pound (I'm in the antipodes). I grew up when cameras used film and had proper view finders and I'm to grumpy to be comfortable holding a camera at arms length. My wife and I have full frame Canons and a SX150 for dragging into ships nasty dirty places. Even though the SX150 does not have a proper view finder it does punch well above it's weight and I grudgingly acknowledge it as a fine machine. So I'm looking forward to playing with this G10, I anticipate carrying it in my pocket and not always having half a ton of full frame beast hanging around my neck.
I’ve owned this g12 16 15 g1x . The g1x had a huge sensor compared to this and was a really good experience to shoot with until it started to wit out and not work properly. The 16 15 just lacked the magic of that amazing small ccd sensor in the g10 . Top of the heap for me in terms of build quality and if you have good light this camera still rewards you with superb looking pics . It was made at time where film was still being used a lot by photographers. There was no Lightroom no Snapseed so it needed to good enough to get people to ditch the other film offerings from the time . Wow how did we get to the point where some digital cameras are now becoming sought after collectibles. However we are here now . I believe for a long time this was the highest megapixel PowerShot offered in the gseries . Really the older lower end a640 has a lot of its magic as well . It too has a great ccd sensor. Nowhere near the build of the g10 but with good light pure old school ccd juice
Yes, I do like my G10, but my private impression is that techical details of photocameras, their technical possiblities, lenses a.s.o. are NOT very important and in many cases we attach too much importance to these factors. A photocamera is an instrument only! Thats you, not your gadget takes a photo! In Poland we say that a good pilot can fly even on a barn's gate ;-) Lets take pictures, not "produce postcards" :-)
@@RichardBarleyphoto Hi! It's very nice of you! Thank you! We have a stormy weather here in Warsaw (not yet, but in an hour or two, three - it doesn' matter - it will be) and I'l try to take some pictures using ND filter in dark light condition ;-) Have you ever test ND especially taking pictures in not standard light..? :-)
I love my G10. I used it for years, and when it finally died (reason unknown), I went out and bought another one. Do you know of any external microphones that work with it? I'm thinking about trying it out to film some content in my smithy, but I wasn't sure if there were accessories that'd help with that since the camera design is so old. Ideally, I'd like a small shotgun mike and maybe an LED light for the hot shoe, though the last isn't really necessary since I can always fabricate some kind of light and mount in the blacksmith shop.
Great review I'm have the canon g11 is great camera can take anywhere, it's very handy camera also have the canon 7d. Your very positive about the camera I wouldn't sell it either
Thanks, I had the opportunity to bid on a G10 (with dedicated flash and the 1,4 Teleconverter) I had no idea the old G-series are such well built units with great reputation, and being a serious photograpgy tool. After seeing you review I won it and my winning bid for the whole package was 55 pounds ! I think I really was lucky this time ... cant wait to once again snapping high iso B/w grainy pics, wich I done a lot with my long gone Ricoh GR. In fact the G10 on screen menu reminds me 90% of the old Ricoh GR cameras.Quirky and not really intuitiv.
Hallo Richard, i use the Canon 5d Classic, Canon 1d MK III, Canon Powershot 6G and the Sony DSC R1.... I love the Cameras from this time, because the images out of these cameras are great. They are looking not so digital, are not to sharp...
I had a G12 and the one I had was absolutely awful in colour. I got it second hand so it could be that the alignment or mechanism had been broken or played with. I found in BW it was amazing. I also found that comparing the Auto White Balance with the Canon G3, the G3 was perfect every time, the G12 never really got it right. What is your experience with White balance with the G10?
The Auto white balance..? Auto Mode..? Forget it and In the "P" mode try to use fluorescent light! Great pictures both outside and indoor! G10 is a realy great camera especially in a "P" MODE!!!
@@chrish007h8 OK. I gave up on it and gave the camera away. One thing I notice with the Fuji is they seem to get the auto white balance right, which sure makes life easier and quicker. Same with the 5dmk1 in my experience, they work well. Cant waste my time with playing with pictures afterwards.. :) Might be a good idea if you post your experience as a top level comment for it to be pinned, I am sure people getting this camera should know what you have said... Cheers Alex.,
@@RichardBarleyphoto Hi, it IS another good solution! Why not.?! I believe that we should try all possible solutions and choose most comfortable, suited to themes, light, others...
@@RichardBarleyphoto I have no time or interest in editing in any way. (For commercial work of course have to) - Prefer getting it right in camera, comes from my film days. Each to their own. A.,
I use mine for product photography all the time. The camera is as good as the photographer, and back in the day was considered the gold standard by pro photogs who wanted something compact that they could take on vacations and such. If you set up the shot properly, I'm sure you'll be happy with what the G10 can turn out.
I have one Richard amongst my camera stuff .... I am going to dig it out now .. I used to lend it to my son when i was shooting the 5D .... as i recall was a very capable camera

Thanks for the video. Just picked one up for $100 aud in late 2021.
It’s a classic camera, keep the iso low, I take 3 images, dark, medium, light and combine manually in software, you can create an incredible image.

its an amazing camera - low iso
Really enjoyed the walk-through - if you included some images taken with it would have been cream on top to showcase its virtues.
I would like to have more time to make better videos

Would this be a good camera to shoot images of a model for an e-commerce clothing store in conjunction with a lighting set up?
