  • In today's video I talk about the newest camera that I have acquired, a 12 year old Canon G10. Why would someone use an old point and shoot from 2008 in 2020? That is what I hope to answer in this video!

Once you learn the personality of that camera you won't be able to put it down. Once she's dialed in correctly, it's like magic. I have lots of other cameras but this is one I really really like. And people aren't as afraid of it as a big DSLR

@@flowermaze___ It works nicely with an attached speedlight, you can bounce it, etc. and get some nice effects. You have to get used to failure if you are coming from a newer camera. It will make some very nice images at base ISO like 80. To me, it works best in good light outdoors. it does have stabilization, and it works, but, you have to experiment with how it works for you. Same for f-stops. I am not sure there is much to be gained after 5.6, but it has been a while since I looked into it. I am keeping mine.
      Best wishes!

I bought this camera around 2010 from a professional photographer who was upgrading all his gear. I absolutely love this thing. I still use it as my main camera. I had a few higher end DSLR cameras from Canon and Sony. I am not a professional, just a guy who likes a good camera. I got tired of switching lenses and trying to find room to pack or carry the larger camera. I sold off all others and kept this. This camera will handle most everything that 90 percent of us will ever need. Thanks for bringing it to light

I've had one since it was the new hotness. I bought it because of an article in National Geographic of a trip up the Amazon river that was mostly shot with a G10, and because it's small enough to fit in the pocket of my jeans (convenient to carry everywhere, all day long). It's still an amazing camera, and very nearly as good as any high-end medium format film camera. Good photos aren't always about capturing every single photon that enters a lens; it's always about capturing the soul of what's happening before the photographer's eyes.

I have a good feeling that there will be a resurgence in popularity for cameras like this soon. About five to seven years ago, there were a lot of videos like this about film cameras which then led into the current film trend. I think that will happen as people look for more affordable ways to get into photography and rediscover decent older digital cameras.

One big problem with CCD sensors is their lifespan. When they finally decide to bite the big one, it hurts. The low failure rate of cmos is precisely why its the standard now. But the IQ you get from a CCD is on another plane of existence... One, where Megapixels dont even matter anymore. My G9 and Lumix LX2 both rival my leica M9... It just so happens they both have CCD sensors and the Lumix has the same CCD sensor found in the Leica D-Lux line.... My leica wins because it is a Rangefinder and I prefer that shooting style over DSLR.

You were dead right my g, ff to now and digicam is the new film. Original G7’s, G9’s, and G10’s will probably get noticed by the x100v fans soon and then demand for this camera might increase.

Hey great video! It's inspired me to dig out mine. Two things I'd like to share are keeping the ISO low - nothing over 200 - will keep the noise down and produce very sharp images. I've had some great results with off camera flash at night and being reserved with the ISO settings. The other great thing about this camera is it will save RAW files if you're really into post processing. I've found the jpegs to be more than adequate for what I do, but the option is there. Keep up the great work! Subscribed.

Around 2011 I was looking into getting a DSLR and I asked a friend who is a professional photographer for recommendations. He talked me into getting the G12 instead and I still thank him for that. I'm not a professional, it was for personal and family use, and surely I would've tired quickly of carrying the DSLR around on top of diaper bags and strollers. I hadn't used my G12 in ages but recently decided to bring it on a trip to the Arctic Circle and I enjoyed it so much. It was insanely practical to use when wearing parkas, gloves and what not. And I loved being able to adjust it to snowy landscapes or very low light (northern lights). It's not the best at high ISO and very low light but I did manage to get a few decent pictures of the aurora borealis (much better than the ones our recent model phones managed to capture). My 9 year old daughter developed a real interest from watching me and asked me to show her how to use it. It's the perfect size for her and I'm amazed at how well she's been handling it. I will never get rid of this camera. Oh and I actually do have the lens adapter, telephoto and wide angle (though not Canon brand, but they are compatible). I hadn't really taken advantage of those until now.

OMG You know you are getting old when the cameras you bought new and still have become "classic" and get reviewed by some kid who is younger than some of the shoes you keep in your closet. ;) The G10 is a nice camera as long as you know how to use it and know its limitations, like the original 5D. You can get some nice landscape shots with the G10 and it works with human photos as well, when carefully done. Years ago there was an article on it in Luminous Landscape - maybe - where they compared some prints made from the G10 to some super high-end camera - maybe a Hasselblad? Well apparently nobody could tell the difference as I recall. The G10 was very much in design, especially of the viewfinder, like film cameras were designed. No information in the finder and framing not perfect, but basically that was the way all the film cameras with a zoom lens were. The G10 was indeed, and still is, a nice camera with a really nice range of reach which when used with thought and care and selective deletions of mistakes, a camera that can render an experience with the flavor of film shooting, the control of an slr and the delivery of nice resolution small sized files in Raw or jpeg. It was the highest resolution of the optical viewfinder G series, I believe. It think it ran something like $450 bucks new back in the day as I recall. They also had a nice "ever-ready" type case with it that was nice to have. I regret not buying the lens attachment to increase the telephoto, it was said to produce nice results as well. Who knows, one day it may be as valuable as a Leica, but likely that will be very far into the future, if ever.
    Best wishes!

    • @johnjon1823
      @johnjon1823 3 роки тому +4

@@firsthandaccount More than 30 years old and I plan on passing them down to the next generation. They are high quality leather made right here in town where I grew up by people in a local factory and as such represent a reminder of what once was and should provide thought for future generations as to the possibility not merely of jobs for those who work with their hands but also some idea of local connection to the necessity of life. Were such things in place today, one would find an N95 mask easily available for any who wanted it, and many many many items imported from factories owned by tyrannical governments would be made by free people locally. So I am keeping the shoes and will pass them on, it is a message. I shall do the same with other possessions, one can teach, even from the grave. I grew up in a different time when men were men and women were women and none but the mentally ill thought otherwise, let alone taught a college course teaching otherwise. So, in a world that has lost actual sanity and replaced it with the ideological messages and thinking making the thing in the mirror god, in that world, an old pair of shoes can says a lot. It speaks to lost ethics, lost talent, lost appreciation for those who labor with their hands, it speaks of effort made in the past for the gifts one has today. It speaks of the blood sweat and sacrifices made so YOU have running water and electricity, a hospital. An old pair of shoes can have a voice and will be heard by those with ears. Do you have ears?

I first bought the G10 way back in the day when it was only a year old. It was considered the gold standard by professional photographers who wanted something small that they could carry on vacation, but also had all the features a pro would want. Great camera all the way around. When mine finally died about two years ago (reason unknown), I bought another one. I love having the big dials rather than having to scroll through some silly screen. I like that it's big and beefy, not feeling like you'll break it at every turn. I only use it for product photos in my little smithing operation and it's great. It's good stuff, but not so hard that old fogey's like me can't get to grips with it.

@@kmoecub It really is a good camera, isn't it?! People keep telling me I need to upgrade, but I honestly can't think of what a new camera would do for me that the G10 isn't already doing. It's better at taking pictures than I am. I still don't understand half of what it can do, so imagine me fiddling with something even newer.
If I'm going to buy anything, it'll be one of those DJI action camera things for taking videos of the smithing and whatever else I get up to around the homestead. If there was one downside to the G10 it's that there's no ability to plug in auxiliary sound. The video quality might not be that great, but it's good enough for close-up work, I think. Not having decent sound, though, is a bummer, though.

I tried bunch of cheap low end compact cameras in a period between 2005 and 2015, while G10 I just bought recently and I would class it somewhere in a mid range going into the professional class with a great output. All those cameras which had CCD sensors even some random on the market, if sensor was well made they could produce some really nice and relatively good pictures which later on you could easily edit in any Image editing software getting incredible results in some cases. I can even give you examples that some of the pictures which I took with low budget under 100$ compact cameras without any strong Manual functions were accepted and sold on Stock websites great while I had multiple issues of my images getting accepted despite all of the editing and improvements done with cameras of that period which switched to CMOS sensors. Sure technology advanced incredibly, it is also due to me getting stock by using those old models but I can instantly see the differences between CCD and CMOS when switch happened. Why companies not continued developing CCD sensors is out of my mind because I guarantee that there are so many people who would still prefer to have it with of course upgraded functions.

great video. I got the canon G10 when it came out and for a newspaper job. I never really realized how great it was until I saw the "newer"age digital cameras look. I started relying on the G10 as a good counter to shooting film, sometimes has a Kodak Gold or Portra-ish look with no flash in low light. My G10 eventually broke and someone gave me their G11. I will say the G11 doesnt have the same weighted feel I loe and toggling around the "functions setting" area in a street photography setting on the fly is a drawback. The G10 allowed me to play with it much faster on the fly. Both great cameras, highly recommend. Ok bye

Its sad because it takes really good photos in auto mode . The 2nd thing is that if you look at the highest part of the lens you will see a scratch on the lens . This is because they made the plastic part the closes and opens over the lens when its retracting and opening to close to the lens and it comes in contact with the lens and scratch's the lens . This happens on all the g10's . I sent mine back right after I got mine and they gave me a hard time over replacing the lens but they did replace it for free and they told me next time they would charge me . They said they fixed the problem but a few open and closing of the camera lens and the it scratched the lens again in the exact same place . I took a photo and sent it to them and they refused to fix it for free again . I was very disappointed they wouldn't fix the default in the camera . To keep the lens from getting scratched I used a sharp blade a cut the plastic fin thinner on the bottom side to allow a space between the lens and the plastic piece . You can't see the scratch in photos but you can in videos . I'm sure they changed the design one year later with the G11 . Its easier for canon to just make a new camera than fix the lens cover that scratched every lens on the G10 series . They just dumped the G10 after 1 year .

What I know about CCD vs CMOS sensors is that CCD have better image quality and color reproduction, but it has terrible low light performance and high iso noise compared to CMOS.

Hi question. I can’t seem to find any answers to this but do you (or anyone) know if the battery can be charged in-camera with just the usb cable? I suspect not, but a confirmation one way or the other would be helpful. Asking because one is being offered to me without a charger and was curious whether it’s chargeable in-camera. Thanks

I tried using a USB cable to charge the G10...a little research told me it won't work. Ordered a charger that hooks up to a USB port, $15 on amazon.ca.

@@kirsten1082 Hi, I did bought the g12 and manage to get a g10 for free. I’ve used mostly the g12 and love it, pretty good results with that camera, the g10 quality is very similar, almost identical, but with a fixed back screen, the other important thing to say is that the g12 handles low light situations so much better, because g10’s high ISOs are noisier.
