Nice trail. I like that Kurt is bring-back-to-life old trails. Not only are they great, interesting & challenging. But it is like bring back a little piece of history too. Good stuff, Brian ! Thank you for getting video of this type of work from Kurt & friends.
Nice work Brian! So much history in the gold country and most of it is just left out there forgotten. I totally agree with Kurt when he says that Strava, trail forks ect has killed the adventurous spirit of MTB. Plenty of awesome trails off the beaten path, just takes some effort and grit. Oh and Weir is a fucking badass, awesome guy to hang with.
Trail Peek Ditto. Really enjoyed this video. If Brian could manage to meet up with people working in the industry to do more of these, that would be sweet!
always think how great it must be to know a trail so well that you know the trail's turns, trees and bushes.... much respect for those who maintain the trails and angry singlespeeder.
Great video! - and Kurt is right...getting social instead of getting online can do so much more... and the whole story about the area you rode was cool! Thanks for sharing and have a nice day :)
Fantastic rides with friends. Nice to see the older forgotten trails coming back to life. It's always fun to find new gems and past forgotten ones to boot.
These are the best videos when you ride with other bike advocates and influencers. Thanks for taking me along and introducing the BKXC community to some new riders.
That's very cool, great way to get in touch with nature and a little history along the way. The heart of what mountain biking is about in my opinion. Trails like these are all we really have around where I grew up. Very cool, thanks Brian.
Amazing trail. Kurt is doing the good work and it's awesome. Old trails have some nice flow and soul to them. Even back then, you could see the imagination and planning to make it efficient and fun. Great video.
Love the trail history and reclamation. The ore rail, footbridge that had been hidden before the landslide. Taking something that existed and bringing it back to life. Also liked your use of captioning for the harder to hear sections.
more videos like this please, its really something special to hear a deeper perspective on what we do and why we do it. I don't see many youtube vides like these anymore, what a refreshment :) Great vid man, kudos!
Caught this last night over on Patreon - Great trail. Was thinking, I know its not always possible and, only adds additional work for you come editing, but the addition of a helmet cam would be good for times that your taking in the scenery. There was a few times in this particular video that you were looking at stuff pointed out by Mr. Angry but, which we didnt get to see it for obvious reasons.. Would add another element to what is already cracking videos and help up really take in all that your seeing.
Those history tidbits made the video! I like that even though the trail seemed nice and loose, it didn't look like there was any sketchy off-camber parts to go sliding down the mountain on.
Another great video Brian, I listened to the podcast with Kurt concerning the Downieville trail rehabilitation. I used to do the same type of thing in NV on motos, the interview and your video is inspiring me to start again on MTBs! Thanks again for another great NorCal video!
Holy Smokes!!!! Dude that trail is sick and to be able to ride with one of the OGs of MTBing. Man you just made my week!!! What you able to do, trails to ride and people to ride with this pass year has been pretty RAD!! You are a defiant inspiration and someone who should have a lot more followers here. I truly appreciate all the content you have put out since I started following when you were at 3K (IBIS Ripley Video). Congrats on making it work, some day I'll catch you on a trail or plan something when I go back CA (My Real Home) and visit. Keep pushing and bring the awesome content to life!! And of course LIVE-LIFE-LOUD!!!!
I love that historical stuff and it's an MTB trail! As much as I love tracking my distance with Strava, there's something simplistic about going without it.
Dude... This was just straight up EPIC!! I've been thinking about talking to the city here about doing some MTB trails in a few fairly large sections of woods close to my house but haven't gotten a meeting with them yet.
Wow! What a ride. I think Mark Weir won a race in Downieville. He came in 15th at the top and blazed down the hill to take the win. That dude is BA! Thanks for the video. Keep it up.
Very cool video you gimbal dork!🤣 Back when I was riding Massachusetts in the late 80s we had a bunch of trails that were old horse paths, railroad grades and dried up streams that we rode, and took care of. The local towns all started spending tax dollars to build paved bike paths, but they were boring and controversial... we stuck to the old trails and had a great time. This video really brought back those days.
Hay, Brian I am on the northern most MTB team in America. Our school name is TrekNorth we have a race this weekend in Rochester it is our first year as a team.I got in to it after watching your videos. Thank you so much.
So awesome to see Mark Weir carrying what is essentially the size of a carry on luggage during a ride. And to see him dab after a creek crossing. He's human after all... Good stuff, man.
If I went to the trouble of building trails ! I'd expect every one to ride them and wouldn't think that I have exclusive rights to anything on public land . The adventure now starts with technology, then follows the discovery. My moto is the Trail is Hidden until Ridden !!! No one has to miss out on the best journey thanks to Strava Trail Forks !
Long time Brian! I love this video format with the text overlay and mixing in videolog style format with trail riding. Very interesting and entertaining beyond just your standard trail video. Besides that, it's so cool that Kurt has uncovered a lost trail in those hills. Downieville and the surrounding old gold hills must be crisscrossed with them. Have you ridden the Big Boulder trail yet in D'ville? That's one epic ride, including the long fire road climbs and epic views at the top before you descend! Keep up the great work Brian! 🤘
Another day, another BKXC video. 4:28 - Your idea of XC is the same as mine. I'm beginning to think that you and I are the same person, Brian. 😂 6:08 - Yeah, now THAT'S the way to finish off a climb! 11:50 - Now THAT'S a TREE! 11:58 - Yup, it's that time of year. The rain stops and the dirt dries up. No more hero dirt for you! I learned a new term, today. "Gimbal Dork". Looking forward to being one myself. I love the idea of going out to discover new trails. I really need to do that. I've been riding trails that have been well used. Time to go out and find some of my own. Thanks for this lesson, Brian! Stay upright and keep the rubber side down.
That was epic, real old school trail with no nice groomed corners, love that shit. A real adventure that reminded me of some of my first rides. And sharing with some cool dudes as well. 👍🏻👍🏻
Brian - Great video! Makes me want to get the heck out of Houston and find a mountain to find some new (old) trails. The dude on the steel hardtail was cool, old school mountain biking. I ride a hardtail, becuase thats all you need here, but to see that guy doing it there... skills have to be sharp. Props.
Great trail, love those raw techy trails! Love your work mate, has inspired me to get a Canyon Spectral and go do the Epic Trail at Mt Buller again (any excuse for a new bike will do...).
Protune is like RAW photo file for GoPro video. It leaves all the footage as shot and applies no filters or color correction, which you can do on the computer later. Makes for much higher quality footage in the end.
This is something I need to learn. I was a semi-pro photographer but never made the jump to video. Still love shooting races and sports but my son just got a camera that he is going to use for his rides and that got me looking into getting one myself. Can't we just ride?? Lol
While I haven't watched all of your videos, this is the best to date. I have to say I do not agree with Kurt's feelings on Trailforks, MTBproject, and Strava (it has made it easier to travel and check out cool new spots on your schedule with the apps) I do really really admire his work on bringing trails back. Great episode!
Thanks so much man! I think there is definitely a balance with the modern tools, I love them. But I think there's stuff out there just waiting to be discovered and you need to poke around to find it.
Oh wow, cool to see this trail posted. I was shown this trail back in May by Kurt. This really is an awesome trail. Also, glad to see I am not the not the only one who struggled on the fire road climb up Saddleback. That really is a brute of a climb: www.strava.com/segments/10951075
"At some point in my life I realized that this is my life now. I get up in the morning to ride my bike because that's what I do..." I reached that point at the age of 48... better late than never I guess
Finally hung it up. Literally crashed and fractuted my neck and was almost paralyzed. Air lifted, 10 days in the hospital and two major and risky surgeries. Successful surgeries and I'm walking. But want to grow old w/o being in a wheelchair. Currently not working and recovering.
The adventure rides are the best. Going somewhere you've never been, half fearful of what awaits down trail. I prefer earning those experience points in real life over the digital ones. 👍
BKXC, this is random, but what's the brand of the daily "planner" "note-taker" that you use? I remember you talking about it way way back, and have been recommended it multiple times. Thanks bud!
wow. so basically you rode to where the shuttle would have driven you? hardcore. I also noticed that you were there at the same time that another youtuber was there... Brad from TrailRecon. his was the gunmetal jeep parked at yuba expeditions. I met him there a couple of Friday's ago. I guess I missed you. I'll be there on the 15th again with some new friends. hooked on that place now!
"I get up in the morning and ride my bike because that's what I fucking do."
Put that on my resume.
Hahaha yes
Nice trail. I like that Kurt is bring-back-to-life old trails. Not only are they great, interesting & challenging. But it is like bring back a little piece of history too. Good stuff, Brian ! Thank you for getting video of this type of work from Kurt & friends.
Yeah man, he's doing some awesome work!

Trail Peek Ditto. Really enjoyed this video. If Brian could manage to meet up with people working in the industry to do more of these, that would be sweet!
The spirit is still alive!! Thanks guys.
Trail Peek yessss love those unexplored trails.
Unfortunately, Strava does not come until the job is done.
always think how great it must be to know a trail so well that you know the trail's turns, trees and bushes.... much respect for those who maintain the trails and angry singlespeeder.
Yeah man, once you ride something a few times you learn it!
Hat off to Kurt for bring more joy for us MTBers !!!! Thank him for me. And thank you for document this. You rock bro!!!
Yep, he's doing it!
Great video! - and Kurt is right...getting social instead of getting online can do so much more... and the whole story about the area you rode was cool! Thanks for sharing and have a nice day :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic rides with friends. Nice to see the older forgotten trails coming back to life. It's always fun to find new gems and past forgotten ones to boot.
There's so much out there waiting to be rediscovered!
What a great and friendly group of guys! This is what mountain biking is about man. Getting out and laughing with some friends. Love it!
So damn true!
Not sure if you'll see this far back but this style of content is great! Enjoying it from beginning to end, thank you!
Adventure/exploration all day trail rides like this are the best. Love it.
Yeah man, I don't do enough of them!
These are the best videos when you ride with other bike advocates and influencers. Thanks for taking me along and introducing the BKXC community to some new riders.
One more thing I hope your toilet and power are working.
Toilet and power are back up!! Thanks Peter
Riding with legends and discovering old forgotten trails PRICELESS!
It really was a day I'll never forget!
That's very cool, great way to get in touch with nature and a little history along the way. The heart of what mountain biking is about in my opinion. Trails like these are all we really have around where I grew up. Very cool, thanks Brian.
Yeah, Kurt knows tons about the area, it's so awesome.
great video man so cool exploring with ya!!!
Thanks Tony!
Amazing trail. Kurt is doing the good work and it's awesome. Old trails have some nice flow and soul to them. Even back then, you could see the imagination and planning to make it efficient and fun. Great video.
Yeah, it's pretty dang cool to bring something like that back to life!
Love Downieville! Looks like we were up there at the same time... that's my jeep at 1:40. Great video!
Haha yeah! Another commenter pointed that out!
Love the trail history and reclamation. The ore rail, footbridge that had been hidden before the landslide. Taking something that existed and bringing it back to life. Also liked your use of captioning for the harder to hear sections.
Thanks Jim! So glad I could salvage those bits of dialogue, they were too good.
big fan of kurt and mark, awesome that you got to ride with them
I was pretty stoked to ride with these guys!
more videos like this please, its really something special to hear a deeper perspective on what we do and why we do it. I don't see many youtube vides like these anymore, what a refreshment :) Great vid man, kudos!
Thanks man, I'll try to tell more stories like this!
Caught this last night over on Patreon - Great trail. I completely agree. I'd even prefer just helmet cam. It's mountain biking, it shouldn't feel smooth!
Yeah, I just gotta get the shots! Never going for the helmet cam, don't need a hunk of metal going through my head when I need it most.
Wow great video! You can taste the dust and smell the trees with this one!!
Nice!! Glad to hear that
Great video Brian and much respect for all the guys you ride with!!!
Thanks dude!
Those history tidbits made the video! I like that even though the trail seemed nice and loose, it didn't look like there was any sketchy off-camber parts to go sliding down the mountain on.
Very cool to have such a history buff/weather man along for the ride!
That looked absolutely amazing, great job to them and thanks for showing us.
Glad you liked it Paul!
This may be one of my favorite videos of yours. Epic riding and you are riding with some legends.
Awesome!! Love hearing that Sid
That old trail is so sweet. If they don't have biking in heaven I'm not going.
Thanks man!
Another great video Brian, I listened to the podcast with Kurt concerning the Downieville trail rehabilitation. I used to do the same type of thing in NV on motos, the interview and your video is inspiring me to start again on MTBs! Thanks again for another great NorCal video!
Oh wow, that's so cool Rob!!
That was fun to watch! I love the adventure and the explanations of the trail history throughout. Good job Brian!
Thanks Rob! I had a good time getting a little history lesson!
Holy Smokes!!!! Dude that trail is sick and to be able to ride with one of the OGs of MTBing. Man you just made my week!!! It's been a crazy year dude!! Glad you're still around
I love that historical stuff and it's an MTB trail! As much as I love tracking my distance with Strava, there's something simplistic about going without it.
Yeah, I don't get many rides anymore where I can JUST ride naked!
Mark Wier Took some veterans out for a ride at his ranch.I don't care what he says about himself he's cool
Yep, he's a great dude!
What an awesome place. Out in the sticks, perfect!
Yep, remote and awesome!
Wonderful ride and what a huge tree. Be blessed
GIANT tree! Thanks dude
Dude... This was just straight up EPIC!! I've been thinking about talking to the city here about doing some MTB trails in a few fairly large sections of woods close to my house but haven't gotten a meeting with them yet.
Thanks man! Good luck, I think more MTB trails are the answer to a lot of problems!
Wow! What a ride. I think Mark Weir won a race in Downieville. He came in 15th at the top and blazed down the hill to take the win. That dude is BA! Thanks for the video. Keep it up.
Yeah, he's won a lot of races!!
What a company!!! Great video man! Sorry to hear Mark Weir's son had knee infection, went through surgeries, but he is getting better. Glad it's OK.
I saw that too, glad he's OK!
Very cool video you gimbal dork!🤣

Haha dorkimus maximus! Nice, love hearing that!
Kirt is an awesome dude, full of new trail knowledge. Brian you you ain't lived life till your on the edge, and you were bro.

Tons and tons waiting to be discovered!
I had the pleasure of riding this trail, it's rippin'.
Nice!
Awesome that you got to ride with Mark Weir. He's such a legend!
Pretty awesome!
Its awesome the trail has historical value.
Yeah, so cool!
What a day! looks like our not to afraid of the "pain", what ever kind!
Big time pain this day!
Definitely a good point!
Wow such a cool ride..
Such a historical place for riding and mining...

Thanks bud!
Always excited to watch your videos! 🙌
Thanks!
Incredible scenery
Beautiful stuff!

This was the first time I did a ride outside of the normal "Downieville Downhill" ride. So much more to explore!
Grt work bro... Keep it going
My day starts with watching your video n I love it...good wishes from India
Awesome dude, love hearing that!
I really dug this Brian.... one of my all time favorites.
Awesome, love to hear that Coach!
Love it. So that was a forgotten trail. Awsome
Thanks Erik!
Awesome! The trails looked sweet. Hope you got your loo fixed!
Thanks man, I did!
Another day, another BKXC video.
4:28 - Your idea of XC is the same as mine. I'm beginning to think that you and I are the same person, Brian. 😂

Haha two sides of the same coin!!
That was epic, real old school trail with no nice groomed corners, love that shit. A real adventure that reminded me of some of my first rides. And sharing with some cool dudes as well. 👍🏻👍🏻
Big time adventure! Thanks Jon

I ride a hardtail, becuase thats all you need here, but to see that guy doing it there... skills have to be sharp. Props.
Thanks Jim! Hope you got out of the flooding safe and sound.
Nicee trails! That switzerland trip was probably my favourite series you did other than redemption!
Thanks man!
Really enjoyed, maybe my favourite. Cheers for the show
Awesome! Thanks Lee
Brian thanks so much for the less conventional trail. great to mix it up
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it!
Pretty cool being able to ride with Mark Weir. 🤘
SUPER cool!
Beautiful trail system
Really nice!
So much flow to the trails....Here in the Northeast, just giant Rocks & Roots :)
Great trail, love those raw techy trails! Love your work mate, has inspired me to get a Canyon Spectral and go do the Epic Trail at Mt Buller again (any excuse for a new bike will do...).
That's awesome!!
BKXC The real trick is getting her across the idea of n+1...
Great video. Enjoyed it from start to finish🤘🤘
Thanks dude!
Didnt know Dyna Plug was out of Chico. The more I get into biking the more I realize my hometown revolves around the bike culture.
Yeah, pretty crazy! I went to college there.
Thats awesome! You should come back for the Bidwell Bump. Anyway great video always wanted to ride Downieville.
Epic man. Is this, was this Cal Ida? Would love to meet Kurt one day.
Almost to 100k dude!!!! Awesome
Getting there!
another nice trail, keep up the great videos man!
Thanks Ryan!
Very interesting stuff! All you need is a map and a compass. Local knowledge is a bonus tho
Yep, I know that's your style too Pete!
Is that still -0.5 exposure compensation? It looks more like -1.5 or even less. Are you changing that during the riding dependant on how light it is?
I think he uses protune
Protune is like RAW photo file for GoPro video. It leaves all the footage as shot and applies no filters or color correction, which you can do on the computer later. Makes for much higher quality footage in the end.
Ah thanks I guess I misunderstood what protune was then. I might have to try using it now haha
-1 exposure compensation at the moment
This is something I need to learn. I was a semi-pro photographer but never made the jump to video. Still love shooting races and sports but my son just got a camera that he is going to use for his rides and that got me looking into getting one myself. Can't we just ride?? Lol
Big thanks Brian. 🍻🍻🍻👏👏👏👏👏
😁👍
Looks amazing!! Any strava link? Tried to find it on your strava but couldn't find it
Nevermind, no strava 😐
It's dark!
Mark Weir is such a great guy. Has done wonders for wounded warrior like myself. Semper Fi.
Oh wow, that's great to hear Scott!
I love those hilarious comments mark is making in certain situations😂😂 love it :)!
Yeah he is such a funny dude!
Haha I'm having flashbacks from looking at the Strava!
i'm getting an evo ss thanks to you
😁👍
Great video guys. looks interesting
😁👍
Riding those unsanitized trails force you to use your skills. You'll definitely get better riding trails like those.
that king of trail is lie my local trails here in Madrid, very "unsanitized",almost wild. If you can handle it, man build trails are like a highway.
DEFINITELY! I could feel myself getting a little better with the "controlled chaos"
Great great channel, I can't say it enough.
Thanks so much!
the life you live makes mine look like crap
awesome video(once again)
Set some goals and work towards them!
8:44 that tyre frame syncing is trippy, i thought my laptop was playing up
omg and again at 10;30
Yeah, pretty weird!
"At some point in my life I realized that this is my life now. I get up in the morning to ride my bike because that's what I do..."
I reached that point at the age of 48... better late than never I guess
love it Brian keep it up
Thanks dude!
Just wondering what does bkxc mean ?
RCLegends UK I'm guessing his name and cross-country. Brian Kennedy XC
RCLegends UK yeah it brain kennedy cross country but the cross country is abriviated xc
He has said before that was the original idea, but now it is more "across the country" than "cross-country".
Oh okay thx guys !
RCLegends UK Brian Kennedy cross country, but he kinda changed it to across the country
Hey man youre a huge inspiration love the vids... You should do more like little lifestyle vids i like to see youre friends n small gear reviews
I really should, thanks for the feedback Oliver!
BKXC keep going man n try to come out to texas sometime really really wanna ride with ya!! Thanks!!!
I always look forward to your videos, Great stuff. You should reach out to Larabar, seriously, that would be a great sponsor
Thanks bud! I think Larabar would be a fun one, but I like being able to eat whatever I want!
Oh I love going exploring. Can you do a night ride with singletrack sampler ???
😁👍 Night rides don't film well!
Ahhh, shit. So sorry to hear that, dude. Copper Harbor?
Hey I heard the gimbal, were you using hero 5 black this ride?
Nope
Love your channel! Hopefully I will meet you in person one day.
Thanks David!
The gratitude is on this side Brian.
Almost at that silver button woo
Close!
5:40 thats actually pretty crazy! look at his rear tyre!
Awesome. Enjoyed the vid
😁👍
The adventure rides are the best. Going somewhere you've never been, half fearful of what awaits down trail. I prefer earning those experience points in real life over the digital ones. 👍
Definitely!!
BKXC, this is random, but what's the brand of the daily "planner" "note-taker" that you use? I remember you talking about it way way back, and have been recommended it multiple times. Thanks bud!
I use the Bullet Journal for writing down stuff: store.bulletjournal.com/
It's pretty cool!
Can you review that steel bike for the vid it was amazing
That'd be fun!
"Everyone needs to put thier phones away and ride a little more" * turns on GoPro...................
lol another great vid!
Hahaha, don't tell anyone I was filming!
wow. so basically you rode to where the shuttle would have driven you?
A different part of the area from where the shuttle would drop us, but maybe the same amount of climbing! Oh wow, cool about TrailRecon!
SUPER GREAT ADVENTURE..
Big time!
