    Mr. Hazel stopped by the basement in '85 where I and some guys were practicing. I was about 25 then, and didn't know much. I knew some of Parliament's music, but didn't know the players well. Mr. Hazel jammed for a while with us. I still have the tape..I didn't really realize who this guy really was until I googled him years later, and found out that he is on the top 100 list of best guitarists in the world! This blew me away! What Talent!...

      There is this thing about hearing/experiencing playing of such eloquence and emotion where the line “brought me to tears” carries over to almost everyone of us upon first putting the needle down on Maggot Brain and not being ready to flat out cry listening to a Funkadelic record. Someone took a dare and wrote of "David Gilmore and Eddie Hazel" having similar abilities to not waste a note in being both tasteful and gut wrenching at the same time. Both have charmed tears from these green eyes. I will not further muddy the language of who what best emotional technician perfection and all. We can all say how long it took it took recover after any number moments in hearing of Eddie Hazel and cursing heroin for taking him away from us before the mothership was finished and in control.

    Couple of people giving it the cannot compare Eddie Hazel to Hendrix line I've seen people spout which irritates me no end. I see it like this. They are both great and I'm sure Eddie was hugely influenced by Hendrix. For me Hendrix's obsessive studio perfectionism meant he was technically untouchable at the time. But when Eddie Hazel starts playing its rougher round the edges but you feel every single note is screaming from his heart. So much flow to it. Eddie gives me goose bumps when I hear him. Have some respect. He's in the same league to my ears and always will be.

    • @LeSeanRa
      @LeSeanRa 10 років тому +10

      He constantly re-recorded everything again and again out of tune or not until it was exactly how he wanted it. No one else could tell the difference between virtually identical takes. Drove Chas Chandler up the wall...

    • @carmenalexander1354
      @carmenalexander1354 7 років тому +8

      One thing about Hendrix; he learned fast. Paul McCartney found that out when he went to one of Hendrix's concerts.
      It took us six weeks to learn Sergeant Pepper's lonely Heart's Club Band. Here Hendrix hears it on Friday and plays it on Monday.
      Eddie Hazel started out as a mediocre guitar player. The older he became, the better guitar player he became. The last time I saw him in concert. Hazel ranked up there with the great ones.

      Oh you know you just lied to your self.Your know Jimi Hendrix was a pure original
      he revolutionize the rock guitar.Jeff Beck,Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page
      could'nt touch Hendrix . And the these unknown rejects Tony Macalpine and whats his name Greg Howe should'nt even be mention here.Remember this Hendrix was a musical god and don't you forget it.

    • @ronaldwilliams3743
      @ronaldwilliams3743 8 років тому +23

      Nathan,Hendrix was indeed a real trail blazer and true innovator........but his playing was often very sloppy,he often played out of tune...and was just plain sloppy most times... and so he relied on theatrics and flashy wardrobe.....that being said,let me assure you...he could not in a million years do what Greg Howe, Tony Macalpine, or Tosin Abosi does on guitar.....he shouldn't be even mentioned in the same breath as these brothers..he did not possess the technical ability...nor the knowledge of the fretboard....but let it also be said,without Hendrix,they may never have picked up the guitar.......because Hendrix was an inspiration to most of todays great players for sure......btw... iv'e never been a big fan of beck,clapton,or page...especially page...so why did you even bring them up?..i never mentioned them...and yes hendrix probably would smoke clapton,beck,and page,because they're all cut from the same cloth.

    • @NathanThePrezPretlow
      @NathanThePrezPretlow 8 років тому +47

      Ronald you know nothing about music. You say Hendrix played sloppy who are you a expert on how to play a electric rock guitar...lol Hendrix had his own style of playing just like a lot of professional rock guitar players no on plays a like.Do Eric Clapton play like Jeff Beck ? Sloppy or not Hendrix created music that is still heard today.Real musical experts still don't understand how Hendrix got those feedbacks sounds.Your problem you can't accept or really don't understand Hendrix music and technique.How can you when it's his personal style...lol No Hendrix was not traditionally school in guitar playing. But didn't need it either.Because Hendrix was ordain with a gift from god to be the best rock guitar of his era.And he succeed in so many ways.That's why he was voted the best rock guitar player of all time.A pure original.Who cares but you that Hendrix had a unorthodox way of playing.That playing created master pieces like Machine Gun,Red House,The Star Spangled Banner and etc.etc.Who wants a school guitar player you restricted to notes and scales.Hendrix did'nt need all that he was musically set free from a music book.He was like Miles Davis,Charlie Parker ,Louis Armstrong they broke the rules musically and they created master pieces.And If Hendrix play sloppy as you say Ronald well let me play sloppy and create music that will influence rock guitar players for generations to come.Just like the great Jimi Hendrix.

Just look into real artists like Denzel Curry, polyphia, and chon who get half the recognition for being more talented and actually stepping outside of what their "genre" predetermines their music to sound like

We only feel the sound of their thought, but we''ll never be able to grasp where it came from within. This is what separate all musician, over and over time again!!!! Rory Gallagher, late guitar player of Chile Pepper's, Stevie Ray Vaughn, many more, and still you'll see the vanguard holding the opened door!!!! James Marshall Hendrix. The great thing about this kind of music is that you know the people playing it really made it for the people. If someone took their time to pick up a guitar (or any instrument) and create something with such soul and emotion, such as this song (great studio version and live version) you know they want to convey some sort of emotion or feeling to the listener. This song makes me realize that the universe gained another star, truly great musician. Such emotion. May his should rest in peace. Also, if nobody here has heard "pray my soul" that Hazel did the guitar for, listen to it. It's like this song made love with itself and had a sweet baby of funk
