Damn that hit me hard. I'm 22 and m yet to see anyone with this sort of talent. This is a one in a millenium kind of talent. Along with LZ, hearing they were my age when they achieved all this really makes me question my life choices. Lol
I said that too. I’m told I’m morbid but.. um.. thd reality is we all will die. Might as well live the best life you can . This is my preferred studio version. Kid funkadelic does a great job too but this… right after this song I want Pink Floyd “saucer full of secrets” to come on then end with TERRAPIN STATION. Just picture me smiling and peace ☮️ out.
It was a great idea of George Clinton to fade out the other instruments almost completely and let Eddie Hazel's guitar stand alone. That's the difference between a very good song and a breathtaking and overwhelming song.
ASMR at various moments throughout. Not one thumbs down...because no one can dispute this legendary track. I have tasted the maggots in the mind of the universe, I was not offended, for I knew I had to rise above it all or drown in my own shit...
Music historian Bob Gulla hailed it as an "iconoclastic funk-rock" record, featuring the best guitar playing of Eddie Hazel's career. Of course Maggot Brain album!
"Maggot Brain" is a song by the band Funkadelic. It appears as the lead track on their 1971 album of the same name. The original recording of the song, over ten minutes long, features little more than a spoken introduction and a much-praised extended guitar solo by Eddie Hazel. Music critic Greg Tate described the song as Funkadelic's A Love Supreme; the song is #60 on the Rolling Stone list of 100 Greatest Guitar Songs. Reportedly, "Maggot Brain" was Hazel's nickname. Other sources say the title is a reference to band leader George Clinton finding his brother's "decomposed dead body, skull cracked, in a Chicago apartment. Michael Hampton (Hazel's replacement as lead guitarist) recorded his own interpretation of the song in 1978, which was included in a bonus vinyl EP that was distributed with the album One Nation Under a Groove; the cut is also included in most CD editions of that album.
The title comes from from George Clinton finding his brother dead in his apartment, with maggots crawling throughout his head. The song is a scream. Eddie Hazel got the nickname Maggot Brain because he owned it, he defined and created the experience. This song reminds me of Pet Sounds, first time you hear it this ain't shit and you forget it. It's the sort of music that comes to life when you do too.
That's the thing about great music. It ALWAYS stands the test of time. ALWAYS. Same reason I can enjoy The Allman Brothers Band today just as much as my Dad did in 1969/70/71...and still does today. Albums like 'At Fillmore East' have withstood that test of time, as well. That why it's still considered one of, if not THE best live album ever recorded.
I actually really enjoy this too, and you have to remember even if the other instruments sound a little strange compared to the version of the song were used to, they had to have influenced how Hazel played when they recorded so its just as important as the solo he produced
Wish I could've experienced the 60s and 70s. That really seems like where I'd fit in. Maybe I was alive back then. Who knows. I could've died, gone to heaven, and been reincarnated as me now.
sometimes i have to go back to that dark place, it reminds me of what ive been through, how violent a man can become, shout out to my brothers until we meet up again, hey they were all bad guys
It is very interesting to hear his solo in the context of what he was hearing and without the additional processing of the original release. The percussion, congas, and (I'm guessing) celeste were distracting.

George himself has said that story is not true. In interviews and in his autobiography. You're not a punk when you dont answer a moron. Have a nice day.
the other funkadelic might not have liked it but I'm glad George faded them out Bernie sounds out of it Billy would complain about how George ripped them.off
I see why george faded out the band bernies doing some asian chit and it doesnt really fit and tiki sounds like hes going to drop dead any minute but not bad though
That's Bernie Worrell?!? I've only just learned about Bernie through my favorite living guitar player, Buckethead. Bucket consistently names Bernie as one of his greatest inspirations. He even played with Bernie in a couple of different bands. Praxis, with Bootsy Collins? And Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains. It was Bucket, Les Claypool, Bernie, and Brian "Brain" Mancia on drums. Bucket is very close to Bootsy and he and Bernie were real close too. Most people don't realize it but Buckethead carries the P-Funk torch today. I didn't realize that the folks he's so close with were/are all part of P-Funk. That explains a lot. Like I didn't know Bootsy was in the band. Bernie, either. Wow.
it's the same exact song, except this alternate has the backing drums. clinton turned everything down, except for bass, backup guitar, and hazel's lead in the original. this is definitely not michael hampton. listen to it compared to the original. this is just an alternate mixdown.
Yes it is. Michael Hampton didn't join till later. It is the exact same as the original, minus the vocals and some delay effects. Michael Hampton has nothing on hazel
I never liked Hendrix much. Great player, but his music is junkie music. I never listen to Hendrix. Hazel is so much better to listen to. Now I also listen to Tash Sultana . If you like Hazel you'll like Tash. They come from the same place musically
YO, WHAT?!?!?! Man, seriously, it's cool if you're not a fan of Hendrix, but how is his music "junkie music"? You mean junk as in smack or junk as in garbage? Either way, you're crazy for saying this. I love Eddie Hazel too. I don't prefer either over the other, just depends on my mood, but fact is without Jimi there would probably never have been a Maggot Brain. You might want to go check out Machine Gun by Band Of Gypsys if you're not familiar. If you can listen to that and still have the opinion that Hendrix is junkie, than you must be on junk!
"Junkie music"? You are a moron. Especially since you don't realize that Hazel had a drug addiction too. Not to mention Hazel's playing was influenced by Jimi.
He was only 21 when he played this ... 21 OMG Talent ...
Play on player ,we miss you.
He was 18 Clinton had to ask his Mother to let him join the band!
Holy hell what a guy!!!
Rare genius, only five exists in the world at any one time, must make their mark before age 23
Yessir the first time I heard this I was hooked. Them youngsters don't know good music
Back here........again.
I don't really know how many times I have listened to this.
This touches my heart.
I'll be back again.
Everytime listening, every rendition, I find something new to relish.
Eddie HAZEL one of the greatest guitar of all time
21 years old !!!! À GENIUS
Damn that hit me hard. I'm 22 and m yet to see anyone with this sort of talent. This is a one in a millenium kind of talent. Along with LZ, hearing they were my age when they achieved all this really makes me question my life choices. Lol
Just wondering what it would sound like if Mark L .Adams bass player with Slave was playing with Eddie on any given track
Chills down my spine! This will be played at my funeral
Me too
I would say at mine too, but I doubt I’ll be having one. There’s no one to come.
It was played at Eddie Hazel's funeral.
This better than this shit

I still have the original album from 1971 and still listening to it now✌🏴💀💯👍🎵👁👺👹✊
😢
I think this may the most soulful guitar solo I've ever heard, but without a doubt in the top 5; personally speaking.
It always shocks me nobody mentions this dude up there w Jimi Hendrix
@@A1terpsauce Black folks have always been marginalized in "rock". Remember Jimi had to go to England.

Everyone was high and after it was done the only part he liked was Eddies hence the final mix...
You are so right much better without the background
We'd turn on the black light...and smoke joint and drink wine. And listen to Funkadelic. Just hanging out with friends on Fri or Sat night.

That's also the difference between the album version and this one.
Greatest blues solo record of life EVER 🖤
This is better than the album version

Simply.... legendary guitar BRILLIANCE!
Screams of pain. Trying to regain my sanity. Can't tell if this is helping or hurting. Either way, thanks Eddie.
I hope all is well with you after all. Keep your head up ☀️

This is completely mesmerizing, utterly brilliant, and if there is such a thing as an 'eargasm' i have one everytime this plays.
I don't know whether to hold my breath or bow my head.
AMEN.
This is epitaph without words.
Eddie was a grate man and awesome guitarist R.I.P brotha 🎸
Remarkable Eddie Hazel...
Great song ,in a perfect world I wish prince could have performed this as a tribute !!
I was thinking the same thing. I would've loved seeing, hearing Prince play this and putting his stamp on it
Beautiful and sweet !! ❤
Listen to this in a dark room with a glass of Jack Daniels x

the story about Clinton's brother has been debunked. The title was just Eddie's nickname.

lol why do the drums all sound like they were recorded in 1986
What's that supposed to mean? The entire song was recorded in 1971.

6:07-6:25 sounds so good, the groove between bass and keyboard is so good
This is NOT the original Maggot Brain! This sounds more like Mike Hampton than it does Eddie Hazel.
