Eddie Hazel sure can pick ‘em up and lay ‘em down. This is most definitely more of a rock/blues tune which gave him some time to show what he possessed in that genre. Just straight ahead jam!!!! I jam with a bunch of my friends and we always play this song until our fingers bleed. You don’t have to be a good player, just have the balls to hop the train when it comes ‘round to you. 😎🤘
Mann Carter: Imagine if he'd ended his already-epic Super Bowl performance of Purple Rain by covering Maggot Brain, with the smoothest and seamless of segues between and unannounced ahead of time, and made everyone (the teams, the League execs., the fans in the stands, the corporate sponsors eager to get their commercials aired before second half play commenced, and the viewers watching the game on TV or via streaming service) wait thru the entire duration of this 10-min. + song to play-out -- who would dare say no to Prince ad-libbing on-the-fly like that?!?!

And for those of you all who are unfamiliar with Ronnie Earl - please give a listen. His style is as soulful as Mr. Santana's. A genuinely superb blues player. Great rendition of this song, too
Both are great guitarist, yes indeed. There are others, for instance the guitarist who wrote that particular music solo, Eddie Hazel. Listen to the studio cut of "Maggot Brain" next time. A masterpiece! RIP, Eddie...
Even Eddie Hazel played it with variations over time. That’s part of what makes it funky... the rhythm leaves lots of room for an to express themselves individually while sticking to the foundations that identify the piece. This is not like classical music where the player is confined to play notes by note.
I was in elementary school in the late 60’s early 70’s and in the auditorium at some function that is blurry in my mind, someone had the Maggot Brain album. The distinctive album cover always stuck with me BUT, even though I later became a big fan of Parliament/Funkadelic of the mid to late 70’s of my high school life I never delved into what became before the releases of those years. Fast forward to the present and the past few days have brought me back to Maggot Brain, this being my first time hearing it and being completely blown away. The depth of emotion in this composition touches me deep in my soul with my mother having passed in August and now my Dad also a little more than 3 months later.
THE REASON IT SOUNDS SO SAD, AND THIS IS A FACT, IS THAT GEORGE ASKED EDDIE TO PLAY RE-CALL THE SADDEST MOMENT HE EVER HAD IN HIS LIFE AND EDDIE REFLECTED ON HIS FEELINGS THE DAY HIS MOTHER DIED. NOW THAT'S POWER--A SON'S LOVE FOR HIS MAMMA.! May Mrs. Hazel forever rest in peace!
Maggot Brain is the guitarist holy grail.Everyone tries it at least once. and what are the songs made famous and played by one man has as many spins on it as this one does
@1Delta I myself never heard this before, but thanks to Carlos, now I have. Eddie Hazel is not only a great guitarist but he's also an originator. Too bad it took me 41 years before I got to know who he was.
Idk man.. I get the feeling of surrealism when I hear this. I could be cruising the streets and with this song on for some reason I grab more of the “now moment.” Feels like those nostalgic moments you look back on from the future. Eddie’s sound is great, but Ronnie and Carlos have something just as beautiful here.

Actually that quote (also used in the recording of "Hong Kong Blues" on Viva Santana!) is from Carlos and Greg Rolie's "Treat" from the first Santana album. Like a jazzman, Carlos often embroiders and interpolates melody lines and phrases from other compositions-- including his own. Cheers!
Here are two of my favourite guitar players. I love the way Ronnie Earl still manages to make sense of his Blues phrasing on this tune. Who cares who is better! Music, when at it's best is beyond qualification other than soulful one....and this is soulful. Now if only they could both play on Song Of The Wind! Let's get Santana, Ronnie Earl and Robben Ford on that one!
I love Carlos, but I just dont get the feel here. When Hazel played the tune, he was told to play it like his momma just died, and he captured that with amazing feeling. But sorry Carlos, I just dont feel that here. Carlos is great, but I dont know if anyone could ever capture that amazing feeling that Eddie Hazel ever did.
+Junii Waves Not comparing the talent of both, as yes I agree, they both kick some major ass, but I just find it hard for anyone to bring to the table the emotion Eddie did in this song. Its kind of like Hollywood and the garbage they are doing today with all the remakes. Certain movies, and songs, just should never be remade.
+mybourbon george clinton told eddie to play like he had been *told* his mother had just died, *but then learned it wasn't true*. this captures the feeling pretty well to me.
Done with style and more true to the original version and opposed to the more modern reading that most do based off of Mike Hampton's 1978 SLAYING of the song. Well done.
Both talented guitarists, and I've been a Santana fan since Oye como va & Jingo back in the 70's. But it just isn't sad enough. Blues in the minor mode and he and Earl still make you want to just have a Coke and a smile.
Love Santana. Love Eddie Hazel. Flawless as his style is. It doesn't really move me until about 6:30 then he starts to make it his own, but as soon as it ends. It ends.Leaving little to no lasting impression. I just watched a video of Eddie perform in concert on Last.fm it also left me without the feeling or lingering impression that the 1971 single take recording still elicits after 47 years. There's something unique about it that has people entranced from the beginning till long after its over. Clinton fiddled with it in the studio in a way that no other performance can recreate. The entire track was recorded in one take. The solo is played in a pentatonic minor scale in the key of E over another guitar track of a simple arpeggio. Hazel's solo was played through a fuzzbox and a wah pedal; some sections of the song utilize a delay effect. The only things I can figure that give it its unique qualities are maybe the physical dimensions of the recording area and /or the state of mind of the artists and techs making the 1971 recording. uh oh I may have spoken to soon. The mantel has been passed IMO to Michael Weber. Hear him own this piece. I don't believe Eddie Hazel is offended, cuz Michael has risen above it all!
