I've been doing martial arts for over 40 years. I understand it's not the art but the person. That being said I don't see any of this working in real life!

These are the delusions of that one weird teenage boy we all knew back in school. There is no possible way any of this works.... the incredible inaccuracy thrusting any weapon brings, crumbles his plan from the moment it begins. I am a cane user and carry a concealed pistol, there is zero chance I rely on my cane over my pistol to protect myself or others.

I guess it is not supposed to work like THIS in real life. Its about using the weapon of choice in a sort of chi training. You can connect and get used to the weapon while exercising slow, clean movements, that will get fester in the process. I guess the best way to train martial arts is by practice with another fighter. For example swinging a sword around doesn't make you a good fencer, but swinging it around in the right way can be a constructive practice if you don't have an opponent.

This comes off more as choreography. Which is unfortunate because after I left the army Im using a cane and I feel vulnerable. Combatives only works if you can get them on the ground in the first place. Guess ill keep looking.

EXACTLY! I tried one of the swinging strikes with a cane once and I ended up hitting my own self in the head. Even though it was pretty close to where I was gripping it and as such did not have as much velocity as towards the end, it stunned me for a couple of seconds. I would not want to be on the receiving end of a strike from more towards the end of the cane. I figure the head and the side of the knees would be pretty good targets for striking blows. But, this only is something I'm concerned about when I have the misfortune of being overseas. If I'm here in the US, I'm probably carrying one of my handguns. I figure 15 rounds of .45ACP will stop most situations.

This man has never been in a real fight. I clicked hoping for some technique, and instead got some movie nonsense.
First lesson of being a real cripple who carries a real cane and has been in a real fight: don't expose that you can fight until the enemy has underestimated you and turned their back. Bowing is for honorable opponents in sports settings, sneak attacks are for guys who'd like to go home.

    • @Andrea1542
      @Andrea1542 4 роки тому +4

I didnt quite take it that he meant to bow before an attack, more like bow when practicing the form. Bowing is for respect, streetlights dont do respect. Now, while I do train and have for decades, I'm familiar with a staff, but never with a cane. I think that like with most forms, the moves arent to be used in an actual throwdown, but more to train your speed, reflexes and power. I love the forms we do, but I know they arent going to be utilized exactly or even similarly in an actual fight. I do know that I am fast and strong though, my reflexes help me block quickly. I attribute a good bit of that to form training.

Plenty of us who use canes mostly for extra balance and support while walking have learned that rotating the cane to a "backwards" grip improves balance. This video is interesting, but I'll never again be able to perform these kinds of athletic moves. I enjoy seeing the traditional stuff because I like to learn. Maybe I'll even use something that I learn someday. I just wouldn't assume that the backwards grip always means that someone has any skill or background in traditional Kung Fu.

Sir, have you been in many fights?
I applaud your effort, but such choreographing is seldom how a confrontation unfolds.
There are numerous objections to your instruction, however, the most obvious is that you are underestimasting your enemy.
At the very least, having a sparring partner would be advantageous towards simulating an encounter more realistically.

Like half of those moves require hitting a person in the face with a 2" diameter end, 10" from you, and blind. Oh yeah...totally legit.
Cheap canes are often sold in Truck Stops across the US - many truckers (myself included) would walk with one in the more dangerous areas of the US or internationally, since we cannot legally carry a weapon on our vehicle. Besides being valuable to keep your footing in icy parking lots - the aluminum shaft and head makes a quick smacking stick.
If you want to be prepared in a shitty area and cannot carry a real weapon, just get a metal cane and use it in the obvious way. moreso, it would be in your best interest to get a Tactical Defensive Flashlight - they're LED flashlights that strobe - one flash of it in the face of somebody and they'll be immediately disoriented, which is time for you to make your moves. They're high-quality aluminum and have a serious heft for their size so they could be held in your fist to punch with, and smash someone with the heel.
If you're ever in a bad situation, carry the flashlight, a fully charged phone with signal, and scream "fire" - carry the cane if it also happens to be icy, or if you need to smash this shit-head's dvds.

Potentially a cane is an excellent weapon. However, I'm studying cane technique and this stuff could get you killed. I would not take this guy seriously. What he is showing is unrealistic and dangerous to the user. There are better sources around. Varady's book on stick fighting is a good place to start.

  • @BelleDividends

This is some DANGEROUS advice you give out there. The person who does this is likely to get whacked. (1) Never present your back to an opponent, you can't defend that way. The blind stab backwards is likely to be ineffective . (2) Don't parry with your arm & weapon hurled behind your back. You don't have the strength to block a strike that pushes through, and you need unnecessary extra time to bring your cane back in striking position. I'm also uncertain if an average joe you could bring his cane high enough to parry a blow to the head. (3) In the streets you likely won't have time to bow first. If you always bow before your exercise, you're muscle-memory training that. You just might begin your street situation with a reflexive bow, instead of getting in a fighting position instantly.
I didn't watch the rest of the video.

Love the enthusiasm. I guess this is more for practicing movement rather than real combat techniques, as there are some moves that don't make sense.
For example, he hit left guy using half the reach of the cane then without creating more distance thrusted with the full length (and my feeling is that getting correct alignment in a thrust with that grip is risky at best). Logically the guy is more likely to be closing distance than increasing.
And static blocking two opponents, one after the other, looks like bad technique as guy one will deliver a second blow as you do a second block.
Couple of other nit-picks, but I would have enjoyed watching more and considered trying it out if the movements looks more realistic.

I'd really like to see videos geared more to the older or less firm (like me... hehe) so those really in need of the cane can have some guidance to fighting back when assaulted on the street. No forms, just "real world" (most over used term of the times) defense techniques. Thanks!!!

You should purchase a Ten Shin walking cane designed by Steven Seagal. It is modeled after a bokken/katana with a war hammer designed for the handle. It is made from polypropylene so it is extremely durable. I dislocated my left knee in 2008 so I unfortunately need a cane for support. I just received my Ten Shin today and I love it! You could probably do some amazing moves with one. I got mine for a total of $57.00 through Walmart.

those techniques are fine for those who do not use the cane as a mobility aid, I do, however, must use my cane as an aid to walk and do not have the movement or dexterity you demonstrate. You should first and foremost train around the paradigm that most who use a walking cane are doing so because they have to for mobility and confidence in movement.
While I bought a defence walking cane, it is first and foremost a walking aid.

    To any naysayers and haters.
Kung Fu is about self perfection, combat training is for self protection. But we all know that any "weapon" is only a false sense of security.
Combat training will teach you form, Kung Fu will give you the discipline and mentality to apply that form. The mindset is what is important, to avoid a negative confrontation is best.
    Just have fun.

Everybody complaining here, that "this is not how it works". Of course it isn't. But Kata is a great way to get acquainted to the stick, of training alone if you lack a sparring partner or a dummy that day, of getting or staying mobile - and of memoizing what could be done with your body and a cane. Kata is most certainly NOT a choreography for a real fight, never pretended to be, but it absolutely has its values.
But I do hope this kata is not the only one existing - or made up by the author -because valuable techniques and movements are missing.

People who are saying its nonsense are not getting it, this is a performance, martial ART, focus on the ART part, if you want to really fight with a cane just swing it in someones head

If I used my crutch as a weapon I'd fall down . Obviously he's cane strikes weren't effective because he had to strike
his attackers more than once to subdue them .

Yeah, I'm not sure this would work for anyone really, especially for an older guy like me. I have no martial arts training and live in an area that's becoming more and more dangerous. I have to use a cane to get around and I was hoping that this video would give me a few pointers if I need to defend myself.

A cane can be a very devastating weapon. Many of the techniques can be taught to seniors and people with various mobility issues. Pokes , jabs and many strikes can be quite effective, even by old geezers. For those who want to learn more, visit eiotaichi.com.

Im sure this man is highly skilled and knowledgeable, BUT!!! Id like to see " Pratical " applications instead of banter that appeals to juveniles. and long elegant moves meant for laboratory environments. Please consider using a partner and recreating self defense for people who actually have canes to walk. and comman items like hair brush handles purse items that be great!!!
