I have seen a few things about fighting with a staff and a couple of things caught my attention. if you are an old geezer like me who uses a foresting / or hiking pole as a walking stick , some of these shown defence techniques can be used effectively against street muggers with knives etc. Another thing I learnt was a sling could be fitted to a quarter staff and that would hurl a stone quite a distance with some velocity ( do not try that one in your local shopping centre).
As an old geezer myself I can relate. I've had a hiking pole for 30 years and it never crossed my mind of using it for self defense since I had other means for that. (It's a Kentucky thing).
This is an absolutely epic self defence video!
Puns and all.
Hi jo o i
its very pointy
Thank you, great lesson, loved the Mushroom humor. Recently did a DNA test and found out my great grandfather was from Aberdeenshire.
I refused to do a DNA test, who wants to end up in a DNA bank where they can do whatever with your DNA
Great video! I laughed so much when he said fun-gi 😂.
I hope you lads have a great weekend, you have inspired me to learn more about the staff and I go to a nearby forest every Saturday and Sunday to practice with it.
Cheers from Scania!
if the stick didnt get you, the pun will.
Better fight coreography than most movies.
Can't say the same for the script 😂
Actually , it's better than most modern Hollywood scripts.
I don’t think the fight choreography was planned. Seems as though they’re all just really well skilled with the respective weapons
@@KJ7Tillymann You're right: A good demonstration with 2 well trained fighters is always better than any choreography.
@@Flashahol Yessir! It was so good as well 😋
The fun guy quote at the end was worth the cringingly slow fight scene imho Earned a subscription
edit: watched to the end. this instructor is giving a master class in stick offense and defense for free. i had to pay thousands and wait years for the same info back in the day
It's amazing how graceful sword and staff fighting really is!
Great instructional video!
You might cover this in another video, but maneuver to get one bad guy between you and the second bad guy and keep it that way. You never want to be in the middle. Take out the nearest guy and then finish off the other. This maneuvering goes for any fight, weapons or not. Of course, escape when when there's an opening
Maybe a noob question, but is it smart to walk out of line to create a triangle with the other two attackers?
It was quite interesting to see how in the 2 vs 1 encircled scenario, spinning and whirling, which is so scoffed upon in HEMA, became quite effective.
Because HEMA assumes 1v1, if you have multiple attackers...your back is always going to be towards them, so making getting near you as much as a hazard as possible is your best bet
@@punishedwhispers1218facts. I almost got swarmed by 4 guys when I was 16. Good thing they were too scared to throw down after I went hard at the closest one to me before they had a chance to flank me and catch me off guard. This guy wanted to jump me because he was dating my ex and there was bad blood there. He decided to bring 3 of his friends to jump me that day. I saw him pull up and confront me, and out of the corner of my eye I see his friends creeping up beside me, so I went full action mode (I didn’t even realize I was capable of it at the time). So his friends got a good example of how getting too close wasn’t in their best interest. In my opinion if you need to take on multiple attackers, you should try to put as many “out of the fight” as quickly as possible if given a chance. Using reasonable force is also recommended otherwise you may be more likely to face repercussions.
@@punishedwhispers1218 to add to that, ideally you also want to be moving around trying to line up your enemies (so to speak) in a way that makes them get in each other's way instead of just allowing them to surround you. Always trying to turn, let's say a 3v1, into several 1v1's
YES, I WAS JUST WONDERING ABOUT THE NEXT TIME WE'D HERE FROM YOU
Great advice. Love the highland dress too 🙂 I attend a great deal of Scottish Games & Festivals here in America and I carry a heavy cane. One of the Clan leaders asked/ said "I didn't realize you needed a cane." I replied "It's more of a war club than a cane." 🙂 Too, I hike a lot in the mountains and carry a hiking stick and practice while I'm hiking...
Such a pleasure to live by your era and be able, thanks to technology, to see your content. Just keep going, it's awesome. Juicy intro btw.
EXCELLENT!!!! I have seen way worse choreography for fights in big budget Hollywood movies. This was fantastic, funny, and showed very real moves (not something you often get even with good choreography).
0:41 Oh, that pun! I loved that! And the one at 1:27 was brilliant, too.
The puns! Love 'em! OH, and the actual content is, as always, solid - well done!
You can also harden and strengthen your staff by putting it in an oil bath for a few days, then using a combo of resin, fire and burnishing to seal it up. Commercial self defense cane companies use petrochemicals and polymers for their oil and resin options, but you can use natural vegetable oils and tree resins to the same effect if you want to keep in natural. The processing can make it durable enough to do a lot more damage without taking any, especially if you find a nice hardwood.
Hello from Detroit Michigan USA thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise and for taking us on your adventure
🍄 for the fungi 😉
LOVE the lessons!
Genius to figure out how to make individual virtual defense.
WOW - BRAVO GENTLEMEN!!! WELL-DONE! THANK YOU.
Brilliant. Great information and delivery. The humor is fantastic! Keep it up.
Finally got recommended a channel that actually gives useful advice on walking sticks
Love it! your making our ancestors proud!
I rewatched the fight scene a few times. Really helps to see all the lessons and such flow together to be applied.
I also just enjoy some good fight scene choreography
That was excellent, thank you:)
Training with staff is so fun! I use staff for flow training and once you're grooving with it you can really sense the devastating force it can deliver. Miss one hand movement, bang your knee and you will gain a whole new respect for this weapon. ;)
Hey Tom, it would be interesting to see a video about self defense against wild animals like wolves and coyotes or bears, as it is more likely to get attacked by those than by people while walking in nature (at least wear I live). Cheers.
I think where you live you are likely fortunate enough to be able to carry firearms 😂
@@desdicadoric Sadly I'm not, I live in Canada.
@@matthieuvilleneuve9101Seriously? I watch Greg Ovens all the time, he has a shotgun and rifle in bear country, he’s Canadian
@@matthieuvilleneuve9101Canadians can have guns silly
@@alasdairmackintosh Of course we can have guns, we just can't carry them easily.
Really impressed with this, great to finish a video with some practical techniques that can be applied easily.
much love and respect from a fellow humam in washimgton state....blessed be to you andyours
Wow, even thought it's rehearsed, this is terrific.
I am hooked right at the "I'm a fun guy" *WOW!* That is how I look at it. Rather talk than fight, but if needs be to fight, no predictions whatsoever. If some person aims to harm me or a friend or loved one, I aim to stop them. And what that may entail God only knows at that particular moment. But, I am a 'fun guy'.
best intro ever... hands down loved it very creative short sweet and great humor
Very nicely done
Awesome fightscene at the start there, kudos to all! And the humor was delivered just right. 👍
What a bunch of fun guys! Greetings from Canuckia!
I very much like your presentation style. Straightforward and matter-of-fact.
Excellent quick tutorial. The course sounds great.
Nate
Thank you, keep up the good work.
dude that was a sick fight sequence at the beginning! top stuff 😆👌
lovely bolette! I love walking with a shepards crook for hiking walking or for defense and i use it as well when im clearing a path or brush.
Frickin AWESOME, subscribed!
Will join your Patreon next week payday.
Knowing this would be a great entree to using a samurai sword! Excellent posts, gents!
Slavic stick fighting is epic. Good videos here.
LOL! That comedic opening was brilliant
you had me at "fun guy"...subscribed , liked and hit the bell : )
Really engaging instructor; enjoyed that.
One can really see the tactics behind Savate in these strategies.
Nice demonstration of the practical skill ladder.
Imagine walking somewhere in the scottish wilderness and you come a cross Tom, Saorsa and friends doing this.
Very informative video, I learned a lot that is applicable to a bo staff.
Thanks guys, I've always wanted to get into this.
the way that knife stuck on the ground after it got hit 🔥
Very informative, thoroughly enjoyable
Love the content. Cheers from Estonia
Love using a staff. Wonderful weapon.
My 5 yo is in love with the Mushroom skit! More Fungi shorts please!
Thanks for the great advice, lad.
Awesome intro! Love the storytelling. Any the meat of the video is pretty good too 😂 wish I could afford the patreon, but thankful you continue to put out content here as well.
The play on words was lovely haha
Good pointers, seeing as the world and Britain are soon to be engulfed in civil unrest then these video's could be priceless for defense.
Great video & helpful techniques!
Good stuff, gentlemen. Thank you.
Tom, Ben, as a Scot and KIlts lover French , and french stick practionner and teacher, i love it. you are both fun gi 🤣
I love your "good stick" t-shirt too. Can i have one ?
I'm wondering if a somekind of irl meeting could be possible between "good stick suckers" in France or Scotland.🤔
The look in his eye when bagging that mushroom! 🤣 🍄 Fun-gi!
Excellent video, thanks for posting.
That maneuver you did to knock down the non-shortsword attacker is very similar to the kimura grip used in grappling!
Awesome instructional content.
The mushroom puns alone ok I'll sub 😊great video bro!
I love this. Good stuff.
Love it! I have to come to Scotland! 😀
Seriously thinking of joining that patreon...
Great video guys.
Best intro ever.
10/5 stars I love this guy,
Well done, guys 👍🏼
love your videos man :)
This hobit episode is lit!
This is a great channel
How very helpful sir !!
You know you're in trouble when your attacker says, "Don't be such a difficult guy!"
Thank you very much. Wonderful video😊
Boys in the Woods, love it.
@fandabidozi. What did i win?
Loved the intro fight, but just kept 💬 ng about Indiana Jones pulling out his pistol. It's the American in me. However, I am definitely becoming a Patreon member. After enduring a very creepy harassing neighbor man lately on my Woodland rambles (me in my mid sixties and he in his 70s for God's sake...when do old billy goats stop trying to climb mountains), and considering a firearm, I decided as a fencer, a staff/stick would be my most comfortable protection. That, and took a little hint from the baby skunk that sprayed my dog recently, so a small pepper spray. I love these stick videos and have learned a lot from them. So me, a Calleiach, out in the woods with my stick having some fun playing with it.
Fantastic video, concise and effective instruction! But, you’ve probably also just made “sticks” the next thing the UK bans! 😂
Just found you and watched all your shorts.
My ADHD a*s certainly doesn't need another hobby, but I already own a good walking stick, so f**k it 😂
Great content man! Will support you on Patreon soon.
Love it! Sad ending, after all that he lost his ‘shroom. Lol
Sick intro man!!
Love the videos mate
amazing, i think that all the civilization in the past used a stick to defende themself.
i suggest you also to check the italian stick fighting: bastone da passeggio, different schools, sicilian, pugliese, ecc
YES! Just me self a staff for walking and wild camping, now i can slay others 😅
FANTASTIC job ! LoL
The knowledge of European stick fighting is so hard to find !
Great content!
Omg you demolished a leprechaun family home! 😉 (love the video)
Good job. Awesome 👍
I was there. I remember it. The controversies. The Bartman. The Butterfinger commercials. It happened. All of it, and so much more. I was in high-school during the golden age, and we had to make rules for ourselves so that we *didn't* just spend hours reciting lines from the show. It's why Simpsons fans of a certain age can *still* find each other in a crowd by shouting "Dental plan"
I'll have you know Am a fun guy...
Made me giggle.
I noticed some similarities between the fun-gi's wide movements and two-handed sword techniques. I assume that there was a lot of crossover between the disciplines.
Depending on the length of the stick, a lot of the movements and techniques can cross over between stick/staff and things like spear, 2 handed sword, or 1 handed sword. That's why typically people used to learn to wield a stick/staff as a weapon before ever touching a "real weapon" lol
Awesome vid. Powerful lessons. Making myself a Musclewood staff currently.
Staff vs spear would be interesting!!!
great hiking defence
Great stuff.
What in the Jamie Fraser from Highlander on Netflix. That's some good acting.
Brilliant.
Great content
