    The Bo Staff is found in most the traditional Martial Arts from China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Philippines like Karate, Kali, and Kung Fu! Bo Staff is a term we use for this weapon in USA where the term Bo is more appropriate when referring to a Bo Staff in a Karate class. 棒 or Bàng is more appropriate when referring to a Bo Staff in a Chinese Kung Fu or Wushu class! No matter what you call the Bo Staff this Martial Arts weapon is used for self defense and attack in a spinning, thrusting, smacking, blocking, and re-directing manner. The oldest and the mother of all martial arts is 'kalaripayattu' for 3000 years from which all martial arts have been originated.
    In 477AD the buddhas from india went to china to spread their techniques of martial arts and Yogic Sadhana (yoga)throughout the world and built the shaolin temple there.

    "Spinning can also be an attack, spinning can also be a defense, spinning can also be getting to know your weapon..."
    Nope. Not those spins, anyways. Those are flag spins. If they were strikes or defense, your body would reinforce the spins at the repeat of every strike point in the spin, or else the 'combat application' you're training for is built upon pure coincidence. If it was 'getting to know your weapon', well... you cannot claim to be learning it, as a weapon, with speed spins - those are not the techniques that ever legitimately defined the staff as a weapon.
    What you have shown are NOT the fundamentals of the staff. You showed spins and kicks, and then a number of situationally-complex staff moves that could not possibly be considered 'fundamentals'. The bow stance stabbing strike is about the only thing I saw that was certainly in the realm of 'fundamental'. There are a bunch of simple, fundamental, kung fu staff strikes - I know them, and it really is no feat in knowing them. Staff spins are built upon fundamental strikes, but doing them as spins is not fundamental at all. It's damaging to one's training to just spin instead of breaking down and focusing the actual strike.
    Your kicks and spins look nice. You should consider putting those aside for a while, in your staff training, because the focus on them is probably what's interfering with the quality of your other moves. At 15:35, for example, a basic downward swipe came out super sloppy and uncontrolled, and that's just the clearest example. Outside of your spins and kicks, you maintain good control in the other moves when you are doing them slowly. When you go at a normal speed, you either lack in power or lack in control. It's subtle, but it is noticeable.

    • @MS-vj6zt
      @MS-vj6zt 5 років тому +3

      When you say staff spins are built upon fundamental strikes, do you mean spins being built into strikes? I'm no expert, but from my own training, I've kinda discovered that spins are basically used to build momentum into a strike or to keep an opponent at bay/from closing in for some situational moments and that spins are not full attacks or defenses as movies might make them seem. I really like how you broke down the video just wanted to hear some more.

    • @Heimdal001
      @Heimdal001 5 років тому +2

      @@MS-vj6zt Nah, I mean that there are downward and upward strikes, that are fundamental strikes in traditional kung fu staff, and that practicing them in repetition is what makes them look like spins. They are powerful single strikes, strung together.
      This isn't to say that spins can't be used specifically for their spins... but even then, the strength and power of the spins matters far more than the actual speed of it. If something is hit with a spin, the spin needs to be solid more than it needs to be fast.
      This dude sort of just spins cuz spinning really fast looks good. I mean, good spinning isn't valueless... it just isn't that valuable. It's closer to 1% of what being good with the staff, as a martial weapon, involves. ...But 80% of what Jake focuses.

    • @MS-vj6zt
      @MS-vj6zt 5 років тому +3

      @@Heimdal001 Ok this I get thanks. I guess people don't get that if you're going to use a spin to attack, its not going to hit multiple times like a movie might make it seem, its only going to hit once on the first point of contact, so like you said, its about strength and power and not how fast you spin or how many spins you can string together.

    My favorite weapon of self-defense, ever! Knives suck, as... Well, of my personal experience. I got attacked by a drunkster or a stoner, no idea. As I was with a gal (and with beer inside of me too), I wanted to be all cool and all, so I turned him around and put the knife to his throat like they do it in those movies (expecting one to run off), and... no effect as he didn't realize the threat lol (though the others did so some even started filming this)! Now (as a public murder was not amidst my evening plans) I ended up in a left-hand boxing and some crippled one-hand judo (thanks the opponent was drunk so that idiocy of a combat style was somewhat functional and successful) - and after three(!) knockdowns and alike grabs (yes, pointless - but how else would I get some spare time?!) he finally realizes I got him at knifepoint and runs. Yes, looked cool and all - but guess who's pants were dirty after that ;) Now staves are a whole different thing. You even don't really need a staff, a random broom or something is ok. Everyone is like "what an idiot, he grabs a broom WTF", right until you knock someone out with it (which takes a blink for most). After safely disabling an armed guy like this (and I had just a couple of days of training!) I can just say this thing is absolutely perfect! And also allows for a perfect control, so you don't have to injure anyone unless you need to.

    Could a blind or legally blind person use a cain in place of an actual bow staff in a real world self defense situation? Why are why not? Are these stubs waited with the waiting of a cane be too clumsy to build proper momentum? Do they sell both painted light canes for the blind to retain recognizability, while achieving desired weighted effects? Are there collapsible bow staff wire? Why not? Thank you for this video.

    How to spin that....

  • @jessehobart6871
    @jessehobart6871 3 роки тому

    Jake, I’m having trouble with the number three spin or I think it’s that one. It’s the one that starts out under your arm and you bring it down and across. I’ve been working at it for months now and have tried just about every variation to my movement that is possible but no matter what, it never feels right. It never feels smooth. My instinct is thrust down as I bring it across my body to help keep/build the bo’s spin momentum and every hundred times or so it will feel correct. I mean the bo will lose no momentum and will complete each spin and transition to the next with a smooth fluid motion. The other ninety-nine times it gets caught up somehow as I bring it down and across my body from the under arm position. I can not seem to get the bo to continue its spinning motion smoothly as I transition from one side of my body to the other. I use a 5 foot rattan with 1 inch diameter and a six foot hardwood toothpick. The longer one seems to work smoother but they both just feel like they get hung up or something.
    What can I do to help me learn the correct motion of the number three spin so I perform it smoothly without losing any of the bo’s momentum?
    Would a heavier six foot without tapered ends help with that or no? I am 5’6” by the way and six foot is pushing it but I still prefer it.
    Sorry for such a long comment.
    I’m not sure if you can reply through these comments or my email is Jesse.hobart@yahoo.com.
    Thank you for your time and videos, you have already taught me quite a bit. I am extremely grateful and am in your debt.

      I don't train with karambits but I do use Daggers, Knives, Swords, and Throwing Weapons like morning stars, chopsticks, and needles

  • @joshitheineffable6798
    @joshitheineffable6798 2 роки тому

    Looks cool and is great for building coordination with the weapon but these are not useful techniques in an actual fight, you're leaving yourself wide open to attacks doing these stylish moves and telegraphing a lot of your moves. In an actual fight you want to be using minimal movement and keeping your guard up at all times.
