      hello sensei Matt
      If it’s not too intrusive and you don’t mind me asking how much was that Kane Masters or Kane that you demonstrated in this video I know they’re more expensive than your usual every run of the mill Kane and I was interested in perhaps ordering one of their products just curious to know

    I've been practicing martial arts for many years. What Matt demonstrates looks ground level and basic but VERRRY EFECTIVE. Starting with just practicing 10 minutes every day and in a couple of weeks... I wouldn't want to attack you. Work up to 15-20 minutes each day, you'll have a great workout... even for us elderly (I'll be 70 years of age this year 😴). Thanks, Matt, for sharing all of that with us...

    I have a background in Aikido but as I age, I have gotten fearful because some of my disabilities connected to my military experience have gotten worse and I worry about being vulnerable to a growing crime problem. Here, in East Tennessee, I’m not greatly concerned because I’m usually armed with a firearm. But what about visiting my granddaughter in NY? Now with this seminar series I’m beginning to feel more empowered and confident! Thank you so much! This former Infantry Captain feels dangerous again….

    I studied JuJitsu for 25 years and part of the training required that we choose a weapon to develop proficiency. Most of my buddies picked exotic weapons that couldn't be carried outside the Dojo (tonfu, katana, nunchucks). I chose the simple--and legal--wooden cane. And I still train with one.
    Now, at 75, I'm glad I made the right choice.
    I think of the cane as mainly a blocking tool: holding the cane in the middle with my two hands about two feet apart, I know I can block punches and kicks with bone shattering effect. Secondly, I look at the cane as a choking tool. Thirdly, as a striking tool.
    And one day soon, I guess, it will be a walking-tool. (:-)

    👌After 40+ years in the martial arts and achieving 3 black belts in karate, kobudo and cane I have to say this is the best presentation of the cane I have ever seen. Simple, straightforward and very effective. At 72 I don't teach much these days but now I have seen something I can happily recommend to enquirers about cane fighting. Well done Mr Pasquinilli.

    Good video.
    Lifelong martial artist. When I was hobbled by an ankle sprain I used a walking stick in NYC. Very effective defensive weapon.
    After you step in with your right foot around minute 8, if you turn your body counterclockwise and swing your left foot back, you will probably put your adversary on the deck.

    A vulnerable point you did not mention is the nerve plexus at the top of the shoulder by the neck. A hard blow there is likely to paralyze the arm on that side. As a retired surgical technologist with 45 years in operating rooms, I know what hurts, I know what breaks, I know what kills. Your presentation is excellent.

    Matt love your videos ! Most raging thugs usually attack with left and right hooks, I stopped a thug from attacking me with a metal bar from a fire triangle when I was in the army, circa 1965, I was in a small room with. A Dutch door ( medical records room) the thug threatened me and open the lower half of the door, l hit him in the forward tibia with the metal bar and gopher screamed and fell down the stairwell , he told the sarge I was trying to kill him, after that he avoided me for the rest of his tour, I am now 75 yo and carry a oak cane for mobility and self defense, even though I have martial arts training, I love a good stick , most thugs see it and give me a wide berth!

    Hi Matt! I'm a Pittsburgher, retired teacher, living here in Thailand for 20+ years. I'm 66, and not as active as I used to be. I have made several walking canes from a wood used here as pick/hoe handles, the Thai name escapes me at the moment. It is VERY dense and strong...a bit heavy but I'll accept weight for strength any day. Honestly, I'd like to lighten it a bit, just to increase the swing-speed, but without a lathe I don't want to do hours of planing/scraping/sanding. I just wanted to say hi, just found your channel and subbed today; maybe next time, if possible, I'll post a link to some photos. ☮

    In the UK I would be concerned about using a cane that has obvious angular edges designed to maximise injury. If an attacker is injured or killed, then it might be difficult to convince a court jury that the cane wasn't being carried as a defensive weapon, or worse an offensive weapon. Personally, I think that a completely unmodified crook handle cane (basic walking stick in the UK) would be the only type to carry to stand a chance of not being charged with carrying or using an offensive weapon. I think carrying a cane is a great idea though (as long as an attacker doesn't grab the cane off you and give a worst beating than if there were no cane).

    The thrust is a good technique but it has one fallacy it can be seen and defended against. My best technique due to my height is the ball buster which immediately drops any person that wants to attack me. Thrusting is great if your attacker is the same height as you are but for us shorter guys we just don't have the reach for attacks above the chest.

    As a senior, riddled with arthritis, my reaction time is slower. Facing a younger, quicker & aggressive attacker, would it be better to strike center mass first? I am thinking that because the head is a smaller target, the attacker might be able to get his head out of the way quicker than the torso. The objective would be to stop the attacker with a thrust and then bring the shaft down from my shoulder level to his head in a slashing motion.

    • @pasquinilli
      @pasquinilli  3 роки тому +8

      yes. I think that is correct. Going to the center with a two handed thrust from the hip, is my favorite and one I teach to my in person students. We do it a lot and stress test it. Make sure it works. It's fast and requires less strength and speed than other techniques because there is less travel of the arms and hands and cane. Thank you!

      If he bends over quick enough, snap it upward from the completed thrust position into his descending face.

    • @MarkedInBlack
      @MarkedInBlack 2 роки тому +6

      if you don’t react fast enough, they can shut down a center mass strike. I like lower leg strikes. They are harder to see and defend against once the aggressor is in striking range. You can be stepping back and swinging at the knee/chins as they move forward. The biggest guys can’t take a solid knee strike because no matter how muscular the legs, the knee is always vulnerable. Knee/chin strikes are my go to first strike in most cases. You lift your cane and people automatically raise their hands and then you crack their knee 😊

      I'm a senior (70) with arthritis. What works for me is to keep those joints moving all the time. I always bent my joints for a few minutes as a warmup, then workout easy gradually increasing the intensity. I do this before going out.
      Keep practicing, all you have to do is to land one good one and the rest will be easy.

    I've been playing with an idea. If I can figure out how to record, I'll try to show it to you.
    Thursday was a rough day, but I walked and did the swinging clubs on Wednesday. I had a little problem with my swinging clubs and tried to modify something. I think it worked well enough so far. Your videos have gotten me started with swinging club and bo workouts. I never thought I could do anything worthwhile with anything like that because I could never get fancy. Learning that just a few simple spins can give me a bit of muscle tone is good for me. I get soreness in my left wrist from lack of strength and flexibility, but I recover. I think both the strength and flexibility there are improving. I'm not pushing the right shoulder, but I'm hoping to slowly reduce a bit of the arthritis in the right shoulder.

Трость помогает и при ходьбе по пересеченной местности. Будьте в безопасности.

I really like the realistic techniques you show...keeping it simple. For older , lesser trained people the two handed pushing technique is a bad choice. It brings the defender in too close , leaves them exposed to strikes and grabs , as well as a disarm. The utility of the cane is to maintain distance and deliver two handed strikes

    • @pasquinilli

      The distance is closed almost instantly in many cases and so it is important to also learn how to fight as close as possible. For beginner through advanced.

    I'm 72 y/o. I know 30 people who use canes, they don't use wooden canes. If you're on a cane you don't have the lower body strength the go toe to toe with a younger, quicker adversary. Almost every senior has a large rubber foot on the end of their cane for stability. If you're strong enough to do these parrying maneuvers, you don't need a cane.

    I don't know your name but as I'm also artist, I don't understand what's trying to teach., From a mental standpoint for the last 11 years I take karate I practice karate. And I've never heard anyone as far as I know. That talks about self-defense and the way you do. Martial arts or karate there are few forms. There's the sport form where you train for sports, the Olympics events are for trophies and then there's the combat hand-to-hand combat self defense. And I've never heard anyone talk about how easily gruesome it is to just hurt someone. Now there is a rule that I've applied to my life and martial arts and it was after years after the movie karate kid I got news for you brother the defense only. Not our gouging not tearing muscle not going out of your way to hurt someone. Before I took karate. I had plenty of experience fighting in every fight that I've ever been in just punching or grounding and pounding. I've never once brutalized anyone I learned how to dominate in a fight when a fight, or even stand up for myself and I've had some I've lost. I've even fought people to the point that I have sent them on run and make them run from me. So I've never heard anyone freely talk about the violence that you talk about and there's no need for that where I come from and how I've learned martial arts and learn how to fight you're supposed to preserve life not destroy it. I don't know what you think is martial arts or self-defense but they're supposed to be one in the same. And you're not supposed to destroy life the only time you should ever ever kill anyone is unless you're absolutely sure you're about to die. Some man I'm going to pray that you can learn how to change the way you're thinking. Your tactics are wrong. You need to rethink your self-defense. People should preserve life. The only time you should kill anyone as if your life and you are absolutely sure shot of a doubt your life is about to be taken. This is a this is a thought comply with the one holding you up, wanting to steal from you and as he's holding you up start believing in Jesus and start praying you can pray solidly for God to preserve your life you never know God might show up yeah you might get shot but you might actually survive horrible thing to think right there's so many you people really don't believe in God and only Sunday believers. Wednesday believers, but only believe on Sundays and Wednesdays never the other five days of the week. Never when it really counts so this is a thought one can comply, two I do believe if you think you're about to die fight but fight to the point that even though you might lose you might survive it because he might have more skill it's better for you to look like a bloody pulp and survive. Cuz you might not get your point across but maybe if you fought hard enough you can and you will. Never can if you have a chance not to don't confront anyone words are not worth it get in your car and drive even if they got a gun on you be brave be courage give me your car lock the door turn the key they still have to shoot the glass to hit you. For one second tell the kids to duck turn on the ignition and drive as fast as you can away from there. Don't worry about the seat belts just drive. The parking lot somewhere where there's a lot of people and then call the law or go to the sheriff's department immediately or go home, call the law. PS rethink the way you're training, think about it, think about it?

    • @pasquinilli
      @pasquinilli  2 роки тому +2

      I agree to disagree. Self defense is not martial arts. Martial arts is not self defense. That is the most common problem with martial artists teaching self defense. Martial arts was never really for self defense. It was hand to hand combat. Some martial arts became more focused on being for self defense only. But even those miss the point of violence in self defense. When a really bad person or angry person is trying to take your life, you must not fall into the trap of believing that the martial arts you learned in the dojo is real self defense. It may be good for a street fight or bar fight or school yard fight. That’s not what I’m talking about though. None of that is really self defense. That’s all fighting and almost always can be avoided. I’m talking about a killer trying to take your life. That’s not a fight. That’s violence and must be addressed by the principles of self defense, not martial arts.

    • @TheAdvaitin
      @TheAdvaitin 2 роки тому +3

      While I have my own doubts watching this video, your premise of self defense is so wrong. It is not better to beaten to a pulp and survive, because you may not survive, especially as you age.
      If you are attacked on the street, your training should have provided you with the skills to stop your opponent--by whatever means you have to hand. Real life is not a ritual or a set of formalistic moves. It's fast and violent. You don't have time to explain the rules of conduct.
      You have to stop your attacker's aggression and strike him or throw him in a way that will give you an advantage. That means you will have to hurt him. In the case of someone under the influence of drugs, hurting may not be enough. There may come a time when you have to be prepared to incapacitate an opponent or kill him.
      And understand this. Your writing is disjointed and difficult to follow, it leads one to wonder if you are who you say you are and whether you have done what you say you have done. In my long life, I have lost one schoolyard brawl, held my own in a few other confrontations and caused a few people to distance themselves from me. I have never run from a fight nor have I seen anyone run from a fight in my youth. Now that I am old, running is not an option, willingly taking a punch is not an option, allowing some one to get an advantage over me is not an option. A cane is now, and has been for some time, my first line of defense.
      And you must have heard at one of your training sessions that the best defense is a strong offense, so a cane can be used very effectively in offense. In my case I'm usually ready with more than one line of defense, each more lethal as necessary. I also train to use various weapons. Virtually any object can be used as a weapon.
      But what do I find doubtful in this and other videos, the lack of an opponent, padded and protected, to simulate what moves could be made to stop the cane user's response or attack. What if the attacker is armed with a knife or gun. What if the attacker is a trained fighter who just doesn't have a moral core? Is he willing to take some injury while being determined to do you more injury?
      The answer, of course is training for dangerous scenarios with your cane and other weapons. Your brain and your preparation is your most valuable tool.

    you are a strong non- elderly . male with no disability. I would like to see a small woman in her 80s with an injured hip and a back with arthritis and disk degeneration showing these techniques. How much force can she generate, how balanced can she be while stepping forward? I was in law enforcement in the 70s, and was well trained in using a baton. I am now a 5' 82-year-old elderly woman with a hip replacement due to a fracture and an unstable back due to age. I use a cane or a hiking staff and practice self defense moves, but don't generate a lot of force. Both assistive sticks have a pointed feral on both the handle and the bottom. I often walk alone.

      Thanks. I was supposed to have one hip replaced this week, it got pushed back til March. The other will be in May. I have end stage arthritis in my hips and have a hard time moving most days. Many of my clients are closer to your age with different levels of disability. Some have very little mobility left. We all do what we can do. There is always something that can be done. I learn from my clients that progress is always possible but the path is never the same. I learn from my pain and lost strength, flexibility, and mobility, that I have to let go of comparison. Aging is a humbling and often humiliating journey, but it is unavoidable and universal. I thank you for your feedback and your perspective. I also value it very much. Stay safe!

      Yes, but in your case your videos explaining the features of the cane and demonstrating your skills with it would show a degree of understanding, and therefore potentially intent, to do far greater harm than would be considered necessary. Blocking an attack with a regular cane would be a different situation from purposely using that special ‘knife edge’ that might result in serious injury. According to my wife (and I do take what she says as ‘not necessarily fully accurate’ killing someone that broke into your house ,neven if they were attacking you, is not automatically justified.
      The ‘Well, it’s just a cane and I was defending myself’ won’t necessarily fly.

      After further reflection I can see why you might not show all of the possibilities to everyone.
      Some effective responses can cause serious injury & serious consequences.
      Often the most effective responses are too effective for the circumstances.
      And it takes a lot of training to get to where you can instinctively respond in a way that prevents harm without causing excessive or permanent damage.
      After we have studied for a while we tend to lose touch with the mindset of all but the most awkward of beginners.
      And without a lot of training most people cannot bring themselves to deliver a really heinous response to attack, even if life is in danger.
      I began studying at 12. In retirement now. One of the best things about martial arts is it provides an avenue for physical, mental and spiritual growth.
      Didn’t plan to think that deeply about this but it has led me to a deeper understanding of types of effective techniques vs. just watching yet another hand to hand attack-response videos.
      Thanks.
