  • 🌌 Welcome to TrekWorld! In today's video, we dive deep into the fascinating career of Janos Prohaska, the man behind some of the most iconic creature costumes in Star Trek and beyond. From his humble beginnings in the 1959 TV series Riverboat to his unforgettable appearances in Star Trek and other popular shows, Janos's work has left a lasting legacy.
    🦍 Did you know Janos had eight different gorilla suits, each with its own name? His ingenuity and dedication made him a sought-after creature actor in the 1960s. We'll explore his work in "The Outer Limits" and how those creations transitioned into Star Trek.
    📺 Discover the backstory of the Mugato from "A Private Little War," a costume adapted from Janos's previous designs. Learn about the curious renaming to Mugato due to DeForest Kelley's pronunciation challenges, and how this name evolved over decades, even making a comeback in "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
    🐾 Janos's versatility extended to creating unique creatures like the Horta in "The Devil in the Dark." This role showcased his talent for bringing inanimate costumes to life in ways that mesmerized both audiences and creators alike.
    🚀 We'll also touch on the various other creatures he portrayed, including those in "Lost in Space," "It's About Time," "Gilligan's Islansd" and "Bewitched." Each role added a new layer to his impressive portfolio and showcased his ability to adapt and innovate in the world of TV and film.

    In my profession, occasionally a nurse or a research assistant will stumble upon a topic no one has even thought of investigating and then all of a sudden, it blossoms into a full-blown worldwide study with global implications. Sadly, those are the only ones that get attention. Other research of equal importance but less bombastic implications go unrecognized if not completely unnoticed and therefore unheralded.
    What YOU do here is not dissimilar in nature. Thank you for your ongoing attention to detail in researching a time gone by that contrastingly would be left to the annuls of lost knowledge.
    I seriously uphold your undaunting research into the otherwise unknown.
    Thank you again!!

      Thanks! Also, there are about 8-10 videos that only members can see at the moment. I schedule them to post no more than three a week - but members see them as soon as I place them in the que.

    I think a Horta appeared in an episode of The Animated Series. The one where, again, the humans are put into a zoo by advanced, snail-like aliens..

      A Horta crew member was also available in a text only computer game The Kobayashi Alternative.

    I had thought the ape-like creature in the Cage had come from the Outer Limits episode "Fun and Games." (The first adaptation of Frederic Brown's story "Arena," which of course Star Trek did much better).

      Actually, Fun And Games featured stunt actor Bill Hart as the creature. Obviously looks very much like Janos's creatures; but wasn't Janos.

    The second, more beast-like creature from "The Cage" has a mask composed from TWO different Outer Limits creatures, the one showed in this video, which was from the Outer Limits episode "Second Chance", which used the crested head piece, and the face mask portion of one of the creatures from the episode "Fun and Games", minus the eyes. BTW, the rumor that the Horta is also from an Outer Limits creature is probably not true as, if you look close, they don't move or flex alike at all.

      It was a rework of the protoplasm creature in the alien probe the liferaft survivors got accidentally scooped into. I'm pretty sure it was simply redressed with the round spots, painted orange and the fringe added

    • @varanid9
      @varanid9 Місяць тому

      @@STho205 That's the rumor, but, if you watch the episode and compare it to the Horta, the Outer Limits blob seems to be made from a stiffer material and the movements are nothing like the Horta. If the Horta actually was made from it, then the blob simply supplied material (which is possible; Ray Harryhausen sometimes stripped the latex off of a creature to use the frame to build another creature) and it was much more than a simple redress. But I've never found a reliable source that claimed to actually know that the Horta was made from said creature.

    • @STho205
      @STho205 Місяць тому

      @@varanid9 it is obvious that the operators movements are similar, so learning to control that blob was probably done on OL. The latex casting looked very much like the casting for the rock life form in the Lincoln episode...but the shape is different.
      The birdman changed drastically from 1964 to 1970 in its various appearances. Officially the same costume with changes...it barely had the same dimensions in Bewitched as it did in OL and The Cage.

      @@STho205 I'll have to watch it again, it's been years since I saw the Outer Limits. I remember watching The Probe specifically to see the similarities between the protoplasm and the Horta and I recall not finding any at all, other than both being blobs. I could be wrong, though. I've been kinda wanting to watch some of my favorite episodes again, and that was one of the better ones, if I remember correctly. That was one show that hardly had any lame episodes, unlike most other shows of that era.
