WTF Happened to Sneakers?

  • Let’s get this out of the way right off the top: Phil Alden Robinson’s “Sneakers” is one of the most criminally under-seen movies from the 90s - maybe of all time. Sporting an airtight plot, a phenomenal cast and splendid direction, it’s been relegated to cult classic status as opposed to just plain old “classic” status. And while there’s nothing wrong with being a cult classic, it’s just when a movie is this good, it’s always surprising to find there are so many people who’ve never seen it. Well, we’re here to change that the best way we know how, by cracking the code of what makes a great movie so special. So boot up your super-computers and draw down the shades - cuz you never know who might be watching you - and let’s find out What Happened to “Sneakers”.

This movie is the reason why every year when my wife asks me what I want for Christmas I tell her " Peace on Earth and Good Will toward men." She has yet to tell me " We're the CIA. We don't do that."

Little bit of Sneakers' trivia: Lee Garlington, the actress who plays the assistant to Dr. Janyk, Dr. Elena Rhyzkov, she went on to appear in the movie "The Sum of All Fears" as Jack Ryan's supervisor at CIA. She and Affleck (who played Ryan) along with some others have a fun little back-and-forth in the office about the mistress of one of the Russians they've been tasked with studying up on. The mistress' name was Elena Rhyzkov.

Phil Alden Robinson did an online Q&A for AFI, mine was the last question allowed. After all the usual questions about filmmaking, directing, screenwriting, cinematography… I asked if he knew who Dr Elena Rhyzkov was currently spending time with 😂 there was a pause (and I’m sure a few nervous shuffles) and he didn’t miss a beat- his typed answer was “I think Cherpitsky?” Talk about a class act!!

One of my absolute favorite movies of all time. I remember seeing it on video store shelves throughout the 90's, one day I decided it looked good and I rented it. I've loved it ever since and have owned it in every form of media since then: VHS, DVD, and now Blu Ray. I even have the soundtrack. The movie is definitely ahead of it's time in so many ways. And it's message is universal. It's an endlessly rewatchable movie that not only has thrills, but comedy and emotion. Part of me has always wanted to see a follow up of some sort. But it's doubtful that this magic can be captured again.

It's a light-hearted, fun caper movie, with lovable characters portrayed flawlessly, brilliant writing, one of the most beautifully shot films that I have ever seen, and a score that stands as a true masterpiece. I love the serious exploration of themes like technology in the hands of the powerful and their ability to manipulate the rest of us by controlling information. In 1992, that idea was was ahead of its time. Cosmo: ""The world isn't run by weapons anymore, or energy, or money. It's run by little ones and zeroes, little bits of data. It's all just electrons. There's a war out there, old friend, a world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information: What we see and hear, how we work, what we think. It's all about the information"! I really appreciated you mentioning the more serious tones to the movie, which get overlooked so often.

I still have the novel based on the movie. Even though I haven't read the book or seen the movie in a long time, I regard it as a classic. After watching this, if I ever come across a DVD/Blu-ray of it I will make sure that I get it.

I absolutely love Sneakers!!! My Dad and I are serious movie buffs and Everytime my Mom would call home, he would hold up the phone, say, "it's your Mother", and then we would fall apart laughing!! I think she called just to give my dad the excuse!!!!

I was probably one of the younger fans of this when it came out. Nothings changed.

I agree, it's excellent, worth watching. Sad to learn it is not more popular

I really enjoyed this film, didn't see it when it first came out. I finally rented on VHS in the mid 90s. I think the reason it wasn't a bit hit was because it lacked action.

I really hate when y’all say stuff like “cult classic” and “criminally underviewed” to describe a movie that was a box office success - debuted at No. 1 - and massively popular on cable and video.

The characters, the characterizations, the settle nuances, the noticeable nuances, a script that was a little ahead of its time, perfect casting, an awesome way of juggling all these actors without being bloated, friends become enemies, an intriguing and relevant concept, a tight script, great misdirection, a settle and poignant score and.......a magic trick!! SNEAKERS has it ALL! - James D. Watkins, artistic director of PHOENIX PRODUCTIONS.
