- 🚀 June Update: Star Trek's Lost Model Discovery!
Hey TrekWorld fans, it's Jim here with the latest update on the incredible three-foot Star Trek model that was rediscovered last year. 🌟 Here's a comprehensive update on what's been happening since our last video:
🔍 *Background Recap:*
Last October, two men in Burbank found a storage locker treasure - a wooden Star Trek model! After some research, they realized it was crafted by Richard Dayton. They listed it on eBay, sparking a frenzy as fans identified it as the long-lost three-foot model stolen 40 years ago from Gene Roddenberry.
💸 *Auction and Authentication:*
Heritage Auctions valued it at $800,000. After intense scrutiny and authentication, the model was returned to Roddenberry Enterprises in exchange for a finder's fee. Legal battles ensued as the original finders claimed they hadn't received their due payment.
🔍 *Recent Developments:*
Daren Dochterman, from the Inglorius Trexperch podcast, revealed new information, about photos of the model in a storage unit before it was officially discovered. This revelation has raised questions about the model's journey and the timing of its discovery.
👷 *Restoration Efforts:*
The model's saucer, surprisingly hollow, and other parts will undergo conservation to prevent further deterioration. While everyone hopes it will end up in a museum like the Smithsonian, logistical challenges remain.

You don't need to tear a model apart to take measurements. They probably tore it apart to make moulds.
Yes, exactly.
Not sure to what end. With the Klingon model it made some sense since the D7s were largely unchanged for Phase II, but the Enterprise had undergone a major refit, and was sufficiently different that molds wouldn't help much.
Correct, that was the reason for taking the D7 apart when they had it. I'm guilty of sometimes shortening a thought when I'm talking. So "measurements for the molds" becomes "measurements".
Poor Greg Jein, if it wasn't for his amazing collection we wouldn't be able to see all those wonderful models, costumes and props, more than likely they would have all been destroyed.
It was amazing how much stuff was in that auction. Even Shatner's toupee!
@@michaelbruno1666 his toupee, 🤣
The reason for the D7 disassembly isn't necessarily to get measurements, but to make molds of the parts and this was done so that not only could they have a brand new hero model for the battlecruiser, but also make cheap, easy to put together models that could then be blown up as needed.
In some of the photos of the D7 model you can clearly see the original Howard Anderson Studios paint job has been damaged by the process of taking molds off the model.
7:55 It would make sense if something happened to the unit’s owner (lost the ability to speak, sustained memory loss or even died) shortly after the photo was taken. It’s similar to the scenario described about Greg later in the video: that the owner’s family might not have know about the unit.
Jim, as always, another amazing video with vital historical Trek info! Yesterday, I saw a Trek video by another YT creator which I think you will greatly enjoy. From nearly the first moment, I spent the whole time watching it thinking, "I wish I could watch this with Jim". Creator name is Fusion Kidd, video title is Classic Cars of Star Trek. Have a great Trek day!
Thanks for the tip! I’ll go out and check his channel. I’ve got a few channels that I check periodically on Trek. It’s nice to see the other communities we have here on UA-cam.
Who owned the storage unit? Wouldn't that also be public record?
I have a thought that may help your research. What kind of glue is now on the model? Did Dayton typically or ever use hide glue to assemble his models? It can be released with moist heat. Any model maker would know that. If Dayton used hide glue and someone disassembled the model to make molds who didn’t know about hide glue, that could explain the damage seen.
So perhaps the person who had it wasn’t a model maker or at least someone who doesn’t work with wood at all, and was someone who wanted to profit off of making replicas.
Thank you that was interesting. The plot thickens.
Yep! Apparently finding the unit is the least interesting part of the story. =😀
The Greg connection is interesting, obviously not in his possession but maybe someone associated with him.
Pictures coming to light in April doesn't mean they were taken in April.
Correct! The assumption that most have been making up to this point is that the April photo and the October auction were suspiciously too close together in time. Knowing what we do now; clearly shows that the April photo couldn't have been taken in April. And that means that while a 2023 photo could indicate something amiss with the auction. But a years old photo is even bigger news since there have been no known photos of the model since 1976.
13:35 Robert Abel SAID they didn't have it. Considering that his company was essentially guilty of FRAUD (being paid to do visual effects work yet completing very little) on The Motion Picture, it would be reasonable to take anything he says with a healthy dose of skepticism.
It's equally possible that Brick Price Miniatures had it and they also were guilty of quite a few things back in the day. It's going to be hard tracing back who had what, since apparently there was little that either company did to document their work.
It would have been so funny if it popped up on Pawn Stars.
So I guess this is the real 'Enterprise Incident'.
The model was in a garbage bag covered in dust untouched for years...the storage was piled with junk blocking the door covered in layers of dust with no foot prints or finger prints... Trust me I know... I also have the original auction photos
Hi Dustin, so nice to meet you! Ok… so this actually makes the storage unit mystery even stranger. I believe you 100%, obviously you know better than I. I would love to chat with you, even if it is “off the record” considering the circumstances. The $64K question I’ve been trying to track down is if they told you whose name was on the unit before it was put up for auction?
It wasn't stolen. Gene Rodenbery simply forgot the last location or individual who he lent it to. He did say it was considered it stolen, but who actually stole it.
4:51 not a hater of modern trek, in fact i love SNW, LD and disco post season 2. but this Marvel studios style into bugs me. one for existing, second for leaving the theme at "dun da dUUUN"
the butler did it
