I love indoor houseplants, they really brighten up a space and make it feel so much more natural. That being said, indoor plants can be a bit finicky when it comes to light, water etc. So, I thought why not bring in a houseplant expert?! In this video, we brought in Darryl from House Plant Journal to answer all of our burning questions when it comes to how to care for indoor houseplants.

COMMENT QUESTION: What are your plant care questions?
How can I safely eliminate gnats (a half dozen or so) from my plants. They came in with my Coleus, when I brought them indoors for the Winter. Each time I water. they fly up from the soil, then hunker back down. They aren't anywhere else, just on the Coleus. Or do I just wait for Spring to kick them outdoors again?
small plastic container with a lid, punch about 6 smallish holes in the lid. add about 1 inch of apple cider vinegar and just 1 drop of dish washing liquid. place covered acv container next to plant. gnats should enter covered container and drown, remove or replace when needed.
Thank you. I'll give that a try.
I just moved and the person that we bought the house from left her Plants and I am doing well at taking care of them but one. they are Orchids. How do I take care of them and what about my Philadendron (sp?) It's huge and not much room for it. would it survive outside?
I would love to know when to pull plants in from outside? I had bought some perennials and planted them in boxes outside. Then it froze over the weekend, and they are NOT doing well. I'm unsure of when to bring plants in due to temperature, and when to let them stay outside. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! @cleanmyspace
This is great. I'd love for Darryl to come back in Spring, in time for outdoor plant planting!
Haha, but I'm an indoor plant guy :P
Chopstick hack = best ever!
Please recommend a few kitchen herbs that can be grown quite successfully at home.
So excited to see this collab! My kids and I love watching his time lapse videos.
So excited to see House Plant Journal on here!! Great video!
This comes at a perfect time! I just bought my first house plants a few weeks ago *and* I'm growing an Avocado seed (it's doing so well!) so I found all these tips so helpful!
Melissa’s! I loved this! Daryl is so knowledgeable! Thank you for this!,,
Awesome. Thanks for the plant care tips. I love my house plants.
Just wanted to say that I follow Daryl on IG and have for a while now. His way of sharing information is SO logical and helpful, I can’t say thanks enough ♥️
You're very welcome! :D
Great info here, thanks for sharing. So many things to consider when caring for different plants.
Love this video. I have had really good success with the snake plant and pothos. I have had my peace lily the longest though (3 years) and it’s super easy to care for and as a bonus it also flowers 😊
I love indoor plants. But also having some problems taking care of it. So, that was Very enlightening!!! Thanks!!
Love it! More like this please!
Great idea for a segment! I love plants and always interested in learning more 😊. Thanks!
You're very welcome Tomilyn, we thought it might be a nice change :)
Melissa, I can’t believe how much I love your microfiber cloths!!!!! They are amazing! I ordered some right when you got them back in stock, and I started using them as soon as they came in. I fell in love! So I ordered a bunch more!!!! Thank you for all your awesome advice and I look forward to maybe one day buying essential oils from you as well 😃😃😃😃😃😃
Also my daughter’s bday is Feb 18th so maybe your daughter will come around then as well 😍 wishing much happiness to you and Chad and your growing family
Great advice and nature of grow time and plan
Thanx for this video.I love plants n always interested to learning about it😊
Awesome advice. During the spring and summer months I would like to add some plants around my apartment. I might actually do it now since I kind of have a base to start with.
Thank you, Darryl!!!!! This was awesome! 🌿🌱 Any pruning tips for houseplants?
Thank you so much for everything you do!!! Love your You tube advises!!!! ❤️😘🌹💙
This helped a lot! Great video!
Libre it. This video will be so usefull. I have problems taking care of my house plants. Thanks.
Wowww Thank you for inviting him!!! 👍👍👍
Thanks! I was so wanting this video
Thanks so much for this helpful video! 🌱💚☀️😊
I watered my plants and discovered I have that palm that is toxic!! 😵 it’s kind of dying but I’ve been trying to bring it back from the dead. (My hubby put it in our sunroom during Christmas to make room and forgot to put it back, it’s pretty chilly in there!) I didn’t notice for over a week!!
I also started cleaning with my brand spanking new Makers Microfiber Cloths today and I got the large space pack and I’m SO HAPPY with them!! SO SO SO much better than any I’ve ever bought, well...just one has measured up. The other 14 are going to the garage as rags!
P.S. I used to not watch your videos because the “dings” terrify my Shih Tzu. He’s 14-yrs-old and I don’t need him having a heart attack. But I’ve since gotten AirPods and now can listen while cleaning and he doesn’t hear a thing!!
Thanks for the tips.
Thank you for this!
Thanks for this!
This is so timely! I love plants in the house and i hate it when they die😭.
On another note, I love your personality 👍
Yes, it does suck when they die but such is the reality of life...
I really wish he had a UA-cam channel
meluvself that's what I was thinking
He does
This was great!
The pony tail palm. I’ve been moving it around the house as it doesn’t seem healthy. I had it in a room that has heating, but it looked as if it was going crisp. I have watered it. I’m really keen to keep it alive. X
Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge! Because of how our windows are placed, we only have one window that gets about one hour of sunlight at 4 PM. What are your thoughts on full spectrum light bulbs, especially for kitchen herbs?
Great video, Melissa and Darryl. Thank you for the tips. I'm a novice and have a question for you regarding money plant. Should the money plant be planted in water or soil? I've heard many folks plant it in water and wanted to find out the best way. Also how should one take care of the money plant in terms of watering/ sunlight?thanks in advance
Have been waiting for this!!!
Thanks for watching Firoza!
The chopsticks to poke holes in the soil is genius. I will definitely do that from now on!
Nice video.... Thanks ... I got a lot of info....
This was very helpful, thank you! I was given a small Pothos plant by a friend who moved away. It's in an 8# diameter ceramic decorative container but has no drainage holes. It does have gravel or small rocks in the bottom though. I've had it for almost a year and it looks green and healthy but it has grown little if at all. I'm wondering how long it can stay in a container like this.I'm going go try the chopsticks and feed it and see it that helps it to start growing.
love it
thanks Clean my space
I just started growing my own herbs indoors because I have 3 large dogs outside that would destroy them. I placed them in a very sunny window in my daughters room because she gets the best light. They seem to be doing great there versus my kitchen counter which only receives indirect light.
Thank you!! Erald and me really liked this ^^
Thank you for answering the question about basement plants! Also, is it necessary to feed Plant food to our plants? Thanks!
Thank you for your videos. You taught me how to clean out my Kerrug Coffee Maker and it is working great.
I have questions for you and Darryl.
I bought LG stainless steal kitchen appliances last year. The are thd vain of my existence. They get water stains that you can clean off, but they are still there. What is the best way to clean and condition them? THANK YOU!
Darryl, you said that plants are like olympic athletes in the greenhouses, but when we bring them home, they might not look the same. Your's look like pictures out of a plant book. How do you do that?
Thank you both for educational and enjoyable videos.
Love this ❤️
This is so useful! My indoor plants are dying all the time I have them. 😂
Great vlog. I have a bamboo plant at my cubicle but the leaves are turning yellow. Should I re-plant it?
Awesome video! I am pretty good at caring for houseplants and have about 20 right now....my weakness is my Christmas cactus...it looks terrible and didn't bloom this year. Ideas?
Nice tips! Thanks for sharing, I would love to have indoor plants soon! New subbie here as well 😄 w/ love from the Philippines!
2 questions: Any tips for fertilizing plants? How to nourish a cutting from another plant to have it grow? thanks :)
Great video!
I was wondering about my orchids. I brought them home when they were in full bloom maybe 2 - 3 years ago. Since then I've kept them alive, watered them when needed (I usually soak the soil for 5min and them let it dry out before moving the pot - which has holes in it - back to the decorative pot), but they have never bloomed again. I've used fertilizer bought at a nursery, and nothing. The leaves are gorgeous and lushiously green but no blooms what so ever. Any tips?
That ASPCA website is so helpful, but I wish there was one single resource that had all the plant details including pet safety, drought tolerance, sun requirements, etc. I need to re-landscape my backyard, which has many different shade and sun zones, and the research process is tedious.
I've been following @houseplantjournal on IG for a couple years now. Love it!
Subscribed to his channel, thanks! 👍
Also use room temperature water.
Great video! Any thoughts on how to best care for air plants, watering them, light etc? Thanks!!
Now that's one video I actually made: ua-cam.com/video/sjNVLgEbvOY/v-deo.html
He is so cute
I am going to make some intro in my channel abt plants. This helped me in tips. Good watch thanks a lot
Which one is d best all season growing indoor plant with flowers and air purifier for Calgary weather ?
What is the best plant food there is for indoor plants? And best soil? Thanks
Hi Melissa! I am moving in my my boyfriend and I'm finding that my wardrobe is overwhelming his closet. I'm wondering if you could do a tip video on which clothes to fold, and which to hang. I tent to hang all shirts that are not workout or pajama items (including all of my tank tops and skirts). I am wondering if some of these items would be better stored in drawers for more space optimizing in the closet. Thank you so much!
Questions: Do I need to feed my house plants with plant food? If so, which one to buy for general all types of house plants? The numbers on the box is confusing 20-20-20???
Who are the a-holes who hit the dislike button for this video? Are they people who run other UA-cam channels who are jealous, or are there people out there who hate on house plants?
I have two windows in the living room and a smaller one in the kitchen. Is it ok to put the herbs like Rosemary, Basil and lavender in the living room to make the room fragrant? What kind of plants go together? Thank you.
Should you wipe or wash the leaves of plants? Should you change the soil or add soil and change the original pot to a bigger pot in order for the plant to grow bigger?
I also wanted to ask about the soil. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Ditto!
Yes
yes, wash and wipe leaves when they're dirty! warm water on a paper towel.
Reduce current soil from around the roots, leave a small bundle, put new soil at the bottom, add the plant root ball/oil soil, fill in around the edges and on top with new soil.
A bigger pot doesn't always mean a bigger plant, some prefer to be tightly rootbound so do some research on the plant beforehand :)
to grow, the need the right combo of soil, nutrients, light and water!
Best tip: figure out the plant's scientific name and then go from there!
You watched too much Leon le proffesional
Very informative post. I love to have indoor plants, i especially like those plants that easily grow in water. So is there any booster( fertilizer) we can add to water to keep them green and prosperous?
The path to thriving plants is the right light. Nothing else can replace good light.
I bought a Plumaria start when I was in Maui and brought it home and it has struggeled lately (I've had it potted about 3 years)... Its in a window with a lot of sun, and I water it weekly. The leafs are browning and growing shriveled. Any suggestions?
Thank u for all the plant info! Question, for a house plant, if i start seeing knats in my plants, does that mean its getting over watered? Or not enough sunlight? I had a pothos on my fridge which got low light, and i started seeing knats flying around.. i then noticed it stopped growing as well.. i love photos and just purchased a new one, my apt gets low light...please help!
Fungus gnats are attracted to wet COMPOST. If your soil has compost in it (degrading organic material), then it will attract fungus gnats. If you use pure peat moss and perlite, there will be a lower chance of fungus gnat infestation. The question of "overwatering" is really more about whether you are under-lighting the plant because when a plant doesn't get enough light (not necessarily direct sun), then the soil will stay moist for an extended period of time (longer than a few weeks). Put your plant where it can see the sky and repot the plant into indoor potting mix.
I love plants. Could you have a show on cleaning hair brush.
What do you do about gnats on and around your plants?🙂
SOOO GLAD YOU POSTED THIS VIDEO...I DON'T HAVE A GREEN 👍...LEARNED ALOT..THANK U SOOOOOO MUCH...I WANT LOW LOW MAINTENANCE PLANT....IVE HEARD SNAKE PLANTS ARE GOOD...IS THAT TRUE? HELLLLLP ME🙄
My Christmas cactus or Thanksgiving cactus ( not sure which) grows beautifully but won't bloom. I got it from a cutting. I've tried leaving it in a closet for a few weeks but that didn't help. What can I try? Fertilizer?
hey what about tulsi (Indian plant) as indoor plant ? and do indoor plants require fertilizers?
Hi Daryl, my palnt question is why does the plant grows fungus?
Hi, really appreciated your advice. Thank you. My question is, can I bring my herb plants indoors in the winter I.e. sage, rosemary, thyme, chives etc. I live in Canada with brutally cold winters - especially this year.
You can bring them indoors but they'll likely struggle to live unless you have a bright and sunny windowsill.
I have a ribbon plant. Its lower leaves are turning brown and dying. Am I over watering? Is it not getting enough light? Should I give it house plant food?
What are the best plants to have that help with allergies? The kind that helps reduce pollutants in the air? I heard that there are some.
Wow, thanks to Darryl for some great info and thank you for inviting him on your channel. I LOVE that he cited the ASPCA website for toxicity info for pets - they are the best and they have a pet poison control phone number every pet owner should have handy - (it's 1-888-426-4435). As an emergency vet I see a lot of toxicities... definitely stay away from Sago Palm as Darryl mentioned and another one to look out for is lilies (for cats). Lilies including cut flowers are very toxic to cats so never bring them in your home if you have a cat. Thanks again for the plant info - I'm trying a snake plant in my bedroom which is a very low light area so fingers crossed! :)
How do you keep flying bugs from the plants? I noticed they like moist soil..
Can you comment about using lamps for artificial light for plants, specially succulents?
I really want to start an herb garden for personal use, but don't have the best sunlight in my kitchen. Should I invest in a kit that comes with a grow light or keep it simple with just a planter and place them so they can "see the sky"?
Herbs tend to need bright light so yes, a grow light would be better than a north-facing window that gets no sun. The grow light can also be left on longer than a winter's day length.
When to seed rose hips in the spring, and how.
I love this. I didnt know all of this. My question is about bamboo. How can i get it to grow bigger? Should i take it out of the jar it came in with rocks? And should i be using purfied water to water my plants or is water left in the watering can for awhile ok
The first step for growth to occur is the right light. Watering is second. If your water is safe to drink, then it is safe to use on plants (at room temperature).
best to use distilled
Hi i have a zz plant how often should i water it?
I have a Bonsai,

Do banana peels really feed plants? If so, how often would it be good to do this?
@HeatherLifeStyles just had to think of your video from yesterday

Do succulent plants thrive in certain seasons?
Hello, I have a question. I work in library - very small in a village - and I go there just once a week. We have only one window looking on the north so there is not much light. The room is little bit wet (not too much, it´s a library but in an old building). Temperatures can vary because the heater is on only when it´s working day (there is office and kindergarten in the same building). And now my question - I´d love to have there at least two or three flowers but don´t want them to starve. I´d love to have one on the window and two others on bookshelves (it´s pretty dark there because of the sunblinds - we don´t want anyone to look inside when we´re not there... there is a PC so...). Do you have any recommendation? Thanks in advance.
KucharovaMarie I don't think there's any flowers would prefer that environment naturally. Flowering plants almost always require a lot of sunlight. It takes a lot of energy for the plant to produce flowers. So if your location has almost to none the plant can't properly produce flowers.
You can try to get one and a grow lamp to shine on the plant in a mini desktop greenhouse. The grow lamp can supplement for the lack of real sunlight. The most effective ones I've tried are the one that shines pink/purple though. The white LED works but they need to be real close. I also haven't seen LED helping my plants thrive only the pink/purple ones (LED too).
Honestly your best bet are leafy greens. They also real good for cleaning the air and easy to maintain.
I'm not good with plants. I purchased 3 beautiful Hibicus bush and they had beautiful blooms. First thing that happened were caterpillars all over them. I used dish washing liquid and sprayed them until they couldn't hang on and they dropped off. Next thing I noticed were these tiny white bugs all over the flower. I couldn't get rid of them and they slowly ate my flowers. How do I prevent this from happening this season to my hibicus. This is a outside plant.
Love this! I have a question. My spider plant started growing babies about 3 years ago. Then my cat massacred them and all the babies detached. Since then, I haven't gotten any new baby sprouts at all. What could be causing this? I have the plant at my office now, near a big window, but not direct sun. I use a Miracle Grow fertilizer once a week and water about once a week. Any ideas? Thanks!
it doesn't need to be fertilized that often! More like quarterly or monthly. Stop fertilizing entirely for a month or two and see what happens
Thanks for the reply! I'll give it a shot. I just recently started fertilizing it at all, so maybe it went from not enough to way too much.
The sprouting of spider plant babies isn't a constant feature but something of a "life stage" feature. As new growth happens in the main plant, those new growths will eventually produce the babies. Don't fertilize blindly - only do it when you see new growth. Growth is triggered by nothing else but light (the right amount).
I just adopted what I think is a Chinese evergreen. It was in my husband's office building as a rental plant and didn't have much access to sunlight. I put it in a slightly larger pot, pruned it a bit and after watching this video I will be putting it in some indirect sunlight. Is there anything else I can do to help it flourish?
That sounds like a good plan. Remember to aerate the soil occasionally so the water can more evenly penetrate :)
Oh yes! Thank you for the reminder. I can't believe I had already forgotten about aerating the soil. 😊
Darrell, why did you not talk about how important good drainage is to almost every house plant out there? And to always use a good potting soil.
I wish he would come back to UA-cam!!
This is more of an outdoor gardening question but here's what I know: first, you need to determine your USDA zone, which gives you a classification of how cold your winters get. Then, you need to find the hardiness of your outdoor plants - so if a plant tag says "USDA hardiness zone 10" and you are Zone 7, then it means the plant will not survive outdoors in your zone year-round.
My question is , can we grow pothos plant from seeds or just cuttings
I live here in qatar.can I keep money plant in air-conditioned room where windows r never opened due to harsh climate n dust.. please reply
