- 30 Favorite Low-Maintenance LOW LIGHT INDOOR PLANTS (plus Styling Tips!)
You may think that you need a ton of sun and a green thumb to keep houseplants alive, but that's not always the case. Almost all the indoor plants shown in this video can grown in indirect light and some even in windowless rooms. If you are looking for indoor plants that are low maintenance and require little light, this video is for you.

Thank you for addressing which plants are toxic to pets or not!
Having a curious puppy who can and will get her little mouth onto everything I bring into the house, regardless what I do to keep it away from her, makes plant shopping hard. I have been searching for indoor plants which might be good to try, and every video I've had to keep pausing at each suggestion to google "is this pet safe" before I get attached, but you did the hard work for me! Thanks!
Hope you found some beauties to add to your space 🪴💚
I like the way you not only give good advice but also tell us what plants are toxic to pets.
I have a cat who's into everything. Thanks!
My dad has a staghorn that he bought 40years ago it now measures over 1.8 metres or 6ft wide and at least 90cm high. It is outdoors and is truly the most amazing specimen I've ever seen.
Wow. I’ve never seen (even in photos) one that large (not even close). That’s impressive.
@@jjpp2216 I know, I haven't seen one that size at botanical gardens that I have visited. It is awesome and I get to see it each time I go to my Dad's, such a joy.
Wow splendid 😍
@@JulieKhuu wonderful how things improve with age.
Which state your Dad is in? I bet in the south or California.
I l❤ve this video and your tips and now I feel confident and going to purchase more indoor plants.
Thank you for sharing Julie!! I have most of these!! My experience.... Ive lost several plants due to harder Winters and scale, so I had to get two mini indoor greenhouses and so I've placed all of my plants in them except, for my Spider plant, Pothos and Bromeliads which are high up on bathroom shelves in my bathroom so my cat can't reach them, and they've all been thriving especially, under growlights!! Even my Maidenhair fern which I love, and I've killed several, is thriving in the greenhouse!!
NO Julie! Becareful with the English Ivy they are total SPIDER MITE TRAPS!!! My beautiful Ivy was devoured by spider mites. They apparently appear out of nowhere; air ducts ect. You have to give an Ivy constant showers to prevent them. That's too much. Ivy's def belong outside. Silver leaf pathos however are heavenly. Fabulous list tho- i'll use this as a reference guide. Thanks!
Thanks. Because bugs... 😵🏃💨
I won't even consider real indoor plants for various reasons, like I don't have a green thumb & having just moved to the Phoenix area, there are lots of little bugs here!
Omg I didn’t know that!! Thank you for watching and providing your insight Oceans 🙏🏻
Spider mites magnet
@@janereinhardt4715 lol I felt the same & have loved many plants right to death 😣
There are plenty of plants you can grow indoors w/out having to worry about bugs. + There are all sorts of sprays, powders & Mosquito bits you can put on your plants for extra security.
Plants thrive on neglect.
Indoor plants bring so much joy, I would hate for anyone to miss out on that.
You're so gorgeous like your beautiful plants! Amazing collections and just how you could
maintain them by yourself. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you so much! I still consider myself a plant novice- learning more from my fav UA-camrs! 🪴
Thank you for this video. I have about 215 plants in my apartment (small and medium size) and I love them. They make me feel good! Thanks for this video Julie!
Whoa 🪴 here’s one more🌞
Sounds fabulous Elena! 😍
Sounds great, I would love to see a pic Elena😁
I have about 50ish and I can't imagine having more!! But I know that I def will be getting more haha
You sound like me, i have roughly 200 and 65 props ....i love my succulents, cactus and plants
Thank you for mentioning important information like which of the plants are toxic for pets ! These tips were great.
Lots to think about, but there’s something for everyone Saewara 👍🏻
Thank you for this great video!
I appreciate you also mentioning watering schedules and making sure you understand each plants own needs. One of the best things I've done after starting a plant collection, is checking each plant daily, having a moisture meter and not doing a scheduled water day! So many factors can contribute to those needs and can change week to week. My sunny window plants will not need as much water after a week of gloomy weather, etc.
Also I got a cutting of a spider plant that is just green, not variegated. I find this type to be a more vigorous grower, the babies are big! And they don't get brown tips.. Also, when I put the variegated and non variegated varieties together in a pit, the variegated for some reason do so much better!
Such a great reass reassuring video for both visual inspiration, Feng Shui tips and plant guidance! Yes please, I would love more like this! 💕
Thank you for watching JG 🙏🏻☺️
I live in an basement apartment and you gave me hope for having some plants in my space
Some thrive more with a light source of course, but there’s so many that grow beautifully in low light 🪴
I love this video like her style i love lots of plants in my home too my experience with umbrella plants they are not really slow growing mine grow really fast but yes don't really need much light or water it will droop and let you know poor soil okay as long as you have a little peat moss in the mix
Thanks for sharing! I’ve never worked with peat moss so will look into it 😊🙏
Thank you.💕. Ferns can get root bound but you have to check them every six months or so and then remove them from their pot and remove excess roots to keep your ferns healthy. I put mine outside in the rain too. Their is something about rain water that helps keep them healthy.
Awesome tips CC! I have hope with new ferns now ☺️🪴
Omg ... I requested the plant topic on your IG post recently! Thank you so much!!
Woohoo I heard you Ebony 🙌🏻
This is so awesome. I’m planning on decorating my space with some well placed plants🪴 and I love how you said where each plant would look best. Thank you 😊
Awesome! Hope the plants brighten up each corner Krystal 🙌🏻☺️
Hi Julie
I bought a prayer plant because I saw your video. I had a Dieffenbachia for 21 years that finally died. I almost bought another one until I saw your video. Thanks for your help. Keep sharing your knowledge with us.
Wow 21 years is a major lifespan 🪴 Good luck with the newbies Gina!
Thank you Julie!! Your videos are always detailed but not complicated. I so appreciate your honesty!! Your feng shui videos are so helpful. Have a great day.
Thank you for watching Laurie! I appreciate you stopping by with feedback 🙏🏻☺️
Great selections.
Thank you Julie❤
Thank you for watching 🙏😊
I have 3 kids, and if the lord blesses us with more, we'll be thankful, also have 2 cats, and a dog, idk about any of these toxic plants, id rather not take the risk, like a leaf falls off in my baby girls play pen and she eats it, idk, for me I just don't want to take the risk, id never stop beating myself up Cause I put it in the house and I knew it was toxic, just a recommendation for bigger families with alot of pets, I didn't even mention the Turtle, might be better to just not take the risk
Also thank you so much for the information so excited to start my plant journey, and the healing that nature gives us
I love all of the plants you described and have many of them. You gave me even more ideas with this video, so thank you! Even though I live in the Northern Bay area and could grow many of these outside I still like the looks of indoor plants as they make a house look so homey. Plus, I have a boho vibe going so they work perfectly.
Plants just warm up any environment 😍
@@JulieKhuu I love you
U r so sweet and beautiful
I really love you
I hate plants inside the office./home. When colleagues ask me to water them, I used round up
@@mediacenterman8583 wow, terribly disrespectful to a living thing!!
Great video for information and styling low light, easy maintenance plants. I’ve researched this topic for awhile before I delved into plant-parenting. I have around 50 house plants (mostly low light tolerant plants), and have killed a bunch including orchids, before finally figuring out what works best for my place. My plants are happy and so am I. Thanks for sharing 🪴
I’ve killed so many orchids in my lifetime too! They all have different needs, best if we understand them and care accordingly 👍🏻☺️🪴
Orchids, really?! Wow. I lost 2 mums recently, $28 out the window. I also lost one of my hybrid violets, although my previous violet plant that it replaced, lasted me over 10 years. Can't recall how long.
Omg how can you be even more great? Plants are my soft spot. Love the video. Thanks Queen 👑
Me and you both 🙌🏻🪴
Thank you very much! All your plants so lovely. You are so gracious.
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Very nice.
I have lucky bamboo, peace lily, pothos, and peacock plants. Love them!
Love them all! Nice, low maintenance collection you’ve got 🤗🪴💚
I always fond of your ideas and concepts since I love home, plants, feng shui and anything about home decorating and styling. More power! Warmest greetings from Denmark🇩🇰.
Thank you for watching and the support Pinas 🙏🏻☺️
This video was great!! I love how you showed all of the different places you could put the plant.
Styling is key Lisa! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Yes, please more videos on styling low maintenance indoor plants and I would LOVE to see and learn about outdoor patio plants and styling too! Thank you, Julie!
Ooh that gives me an idea to share my before/after courtyard Susan! I restyled it with over 30 propagated succulents and now it’s so lush and vibrant! Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu YES, I would love to see how you styled your before and after courtyard, and learn about propagating succulent plants! You are so good with plants 🪴 and would love to see more plant videos too as I start my plant parenting journey ❣️
@@JulieKhuu yes, do one on your succulents, looking forward to it!!
You’re so helpful in every way❤
I once lived in an apartment with an interior bathroom; meaning all four walls had no windows (a stairwell at the rear, a livingroom to the left, a kitchen to the right, and a door opening to a hallway and facing the bedroom).
I had a pothos living in the bathroom. The only time there was light in that room was when I was taking a shower, which wasn't every day and wasn't for very long. But the pothos THRIVED in that room. It may not have grown fast, but it did grow and it remained healthy and green.
I always advise people wanting plants but thinking they'd kill them: buy a pothos. Keep them out of direct sunlight, but other than that they will be fine. You can't underlight them, you can't overwater them, and you pretty much can't underwater them. If the leaves curl, that's your sign to water them. curve back the vines and pin them to soil to root, and the plant will look very lush and leafy. Pothos plants are terrific!
I love that! What a testament to the beauty and resilience of pothos! Thank you so much for sharing 🪴💚
This was a great video! FYI to Floridians: in many counties the snake plant is a class II invasive plant because the root system triples underground. Use indoors in your bathrooms in pots instead to absorb toxins. I water every 2 weeks and it does really good.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for your shiny spirit. You are really inspired by plants 🪴. Love it
Thank you for watching Crystal! My home feels cold without them 🪴
I love indoor plants. Thank you for this lovely video.❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for watching ☺️🙏🏻
Greatly appreciated. So informative, thorough, n harmonized, organized n inspiring.
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching Jeannie ☺️🙏🏻
I love everything about this video, especially the photos! You do a great job showing us how to decorate with plants!! Like you, I have difficulty with ferns. The only ones I can grow are bird's nest ferns. I currently have 18 low light thriving plants with only two East facing windows. Three plants grow in the kitchen with only under cabinet lighting. My peace lily especially grows well in the kitchen.
The peace lily loves dark corners Lori. Your setup sounds perfect 👍🏻
🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗✅💯
My peace lily hasn’t flowered in months.
Thank you for this plant list and guide. I used this list to start my indoor plant collection two years ago when you published this video.
Posting this on my birthday was a great gift for me! I love houseplants! Thanks!
Thank you for watching Patricia and happy birthday!! 🥳
Great video in every way! Thank you, Julie!🌴🧡
Thank you for watching Golden 🙏🏻☺️
thanks for doing the video, wow! it has broaden my selections!!!! love it Julie!
Awesome, now to narrow them down Cindy! 👍🏻☺️
Im really amaze how lovely and beautiful plants inside our home.
Thank you for watching Mae An! 🙏🏻☺️
Thank you again, Julie!! We own pathos and Monstera plants among others, I found this video to be SUPER helpful on how to care for them. I had NO idea they were toxic for pets, thankfully our cat is super good about not bothering them. She likely instinctively knows, I hope. But after watching this video and learning of all the low maintenance and low-light plants out there, it makes me want to acquire more and have them all over the house. Thank you so much for all your knowledge!!
Some thrive in low light and die in bright indirect sun Geri! Took a lot of trial and error for me to figure this out! 😅
@@JulieKhuu Yes, that seems to make the difference completely, plus how you water them. So informative, this video. :)
Consider yourself lucky! My cats will eat any houseplant they can get their teeth at, including my spiky cactuses!!! I have lots of clever shelving and cages to confine my plants so I can have both my plants and my cats safely lol.
Great tips ❤🙏🙏🙏
Many thanks to you
Love plants! I would love more videos like this one👏🏼❤️
Thank you for watching Nancy! I’ll work on more 🪴

Like you, I have killed all the ferns I have bought and I love them. Sigh... My money tree on the other hand, has grown form a little thing I got at the grocery store to almost 4' tall in the span of four years. Someone gave me a great tip for vases: if you don't want water marks on favourite glass vases, put the plant or flowers in a plastic bag and put the whole thing inside the vase. Happy flowers, happy vase, happy you!
Omg what an excellent tip!! I have to wash my vases with vinegar because of all the hard water
Thank you veryyyyyyy much Julie, I'm from Malaysia, I'm a newbie with plants, watching your video has made me to understand them and how to place then in my house, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, you don't know how much you have helped me in my new adventure for 2022 ~ PLANTS 🙏

Thanks for this video Julie, here in the Netherlands we have (usually) windows just at the ends of the house and now that autumn has started the light is waning and my orchids will hibernate until spring I needed more plant ideas.
Thank you for watching Lenaa! Let me know which of these work out for you 👍🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu I've already bought two plants on the list and I want to buy more but first I'm doing the project of dividing a room (small) into two spaces (living room/office) without making the room look/feel small.
I'm thinking about making a floor-to-roof tubular bookcase that's not too wide and making a shelf at the top simulating the top of a portal (archway) head jamb thing
Very informative video. Thank you 🙏 😊
