Is Tropical Storm Grace in Jamaica as bad as it is portrayed in the media?
I was driving all day across the island on the 17th of August when the storm was happening and decided to share the footage of the road. Most parts of the island are doing fine, but there are a few roads that got flooded, especially in some parts of Kingston.
One post fell down, some branches were blocking the roads, but because there was no strong wind, no serious damage done. The storm is gone now. Some places still lack power, but it's coming back now step by step.
IMPORTANT: If you see a small road that has turned into river, do NOT drive into it.. Instead, turn around and find a different road or come back in a few hours when the water is gone. You might think it's obvious, but not according to some footage on youtube, where people decided it was a great idea to drive right into the flood.
    PS.
▶ TVJ (Jamaican Television Channel) have made an attempt to remove my video where I was criticizing some of their work. The video was here (should show as unavailable at the moment)
    ua-cam.com/video/w1vEEzSFZfU/v-deo.html
I'm rebuttal this case with UA-cam now as we speak and will publish a new video about it this weekend. Stay tuned!

@@bladebrown4341 most roads have drainage in Jamaica, but there are two problems:
      1. Kingston was built by the British from 1700s and they didn't think about tropical rains when they structured downtown the way they did with narrow streets and roads being at the bottom of Blue Mountains - a potential for flood.
      2. The current drainage system is still heavily using the European type of drainage due to the inherited British colonial style, which is not good enough for tropical weather. Such drainage doesn't cope with tropical rain. That's why a lot of places in Jamaica have additional drainage options - like large gullies and ways to direct the water into them. They work quite well, otherwise all towns would have been completely flooded in no time, but there is a need for centralized agency to figure out what to do with Kingston downtown. To solve the problem there - everything has to be removed and rebuilt from scratch, which is not an option, that's why the problem remains.

@@Igniting-Moments Thanks for that; I'm so happy to see how Jamaicans (home and abroad), in general, have embraced her. I got to meet her a few weeks ago when I was visiting back home. She is so much more AMAZING in person Because of her VLOGS, I got to check out some places I've never been (one, even very close to where I grew up in Saint Ann).
But she made me just want to "drive around Jamaica" just to absorb "mi likkle island" in all its variety; and I'm glad I got to do that a few weeks ago: From Saint Ann (a little Village called Higgin Town, not far from Ochi), to Ochi (Blue Hole Falls), to Port Antonio (Frenchman's Cove), to Kingston (New Kingston, Half Way Tree, Cross Roads, Beverly Hills, Downtown, Red Hills, Calabar (where I was attending High School at time I left for the USA), back to Saint Ann, then down to Negril, and back to Montego Bay before flying out. And there are so many more places on the Bucket List to visit. Many trips to Jamaica on my list in the future (next one in December).
Her Fans are just as amazing, in my book. Thank you and the 40K+ others for that.

Irina, I love how you taken on the media, especially the Jamaican media (!!!) but driving to and from Montego Bay during a tropical storm was not wise. I had to drive through Grace for a while yesterday, and the roads were a mess as it related to flooding and visibilty. And it turned bad VERY quickly. One minute it was fine, the next minute it was not. I can't say anything about the media coverage of the storm, because I haven't watched any of it. But I would encourage you to be more careful next time.

You're absolutely right 👍 driving in the storm is never wise. In my case - I've spent half of my life driving through snow storms ❄️, so compared to that - rain is not really a challenge. However, yes, there is always danger when driving, even in good weather and I would advise people not to drive in storms or any bad weather, unless absolutely necessary. 🙏

@@ashantijordane1862 Unfortunately, these things happen from time to time if roads aren't properly maintained or built in the wrong places. This storm wasn't even close to being as bad as some rain we do have in Jamaica from time to time. I remember a large land slide last year that damaged the road in Blue Mountains and it still hasn't been fixed - not sure it can be fixed, since there is simply no land to build on. However, I'm not sure I trust the footage from 9 Mile you're talking about - I've been to 9 mile and drove around St.Thomas and I can tell you for sure - there are quite some bad roads or no roads to create dramatic videos without any storm or flood.

@@paulwarren8832 i believe people should not think about the consequences of storms when they have already happened (unless real urgent help is needed), but rather focus on finding the solutions to prevent these things from happening in the first place. Some comedy during a "disaster"...LOL..."You need a boat"...DWL....I love how you made the reference to your previous video about how people are drawing to "bad news", relative to this one...EXCELLENT...
Joking aside, I'm just writing because your "drive route" reminds me of my recent trip to Jamaica and driving in Kingston (traffic and drivers are "something else"...LOL); then back to St. Ann via the North / South Highway (LOVE LOVE LOVE that road)....no rain for me though; was a beautiful sunny day

We were in Port Antonio! It was our day to get Covid tests to go back home, but the power was turned off downtown and the clinic could not print our results until this morning. We ate our early Knutsford tickets to Kingston and paid a little more for a red plate taxi, but made a friend!! Thank you for reminding me that I need to tell my mom we are okay!

I felt so bad for enjoying the storm yesterday but this made me feel do much better. I like "bad weather". Only factor I don't is how cold the rain water is but tropical storms are nice. Hurricanes though 😬

Thank you, exactly! 🙏 I always enjoy the storms.. not snow storms though 🥶... but rain - love it, just need to make sure people are safe and don't do silly things like reckless driving in the rain or parking a car below the hill when they know the storm is coming and the area would be flooded..

Thank you so much! I really didn't view it as something special and surprised to read comments about driving in the rain. I love driving and on the contrary to what people might think - I was so rested at the end of the trip that even had the energy to edit this video! 😳I think it's because I spent a lot of time in my life driving in winter on slippery bad roads.. so a good highway with rain is not a big deal at all. Maybe the video makes it look more scary than it really was 😆

@@JAMAICAWITHIRIE I also wanted to comment that you are used to driving in snow and icy conditions back home, especially on reading some comments about you not being responsible by driving in rain. Some fans forgot the icy conditions in Europe, and how women can traverse those "adverse conditions" 🤣🤣🤣, women can conquer anything.

So, after reading through the comments, I have to add another. This video, some comments, and the News Reports (which I admit, I haven't seen, but can imagine what they were like, given past experiences with them), shows how much PERSPECTIVE plays a role in how we all view the SAME THING. I have been through the type of "storm" shown in this video, and even worse, when I was growing up in Jamaica. Yes, I realize this is nothing like a Hurricane, but Tropical Storms are common; and yes, infrastructure can be severely impacted (as noted in some of the comments, but not necessarily seen in the video).
Take this storm, and comparing to what we had in Michigan (USA) last week. Thunder so loud, it sounds like bombs were going off in your backyard. Trees falling onto houses (one house had roof completely caved in by fallen tree); severe flooding; and of course hundreds of thousands of people losing power (we had no damage, but lost power in our house). In reading some of the comments about how quickly power was back in some cases in Jamaica, I wish I could say the same here in Michigan. We lost power for about 24-Hours; but were the lucky ones. Some people (over 200,000) didn't get theirs back for up to FIVE (5) DAYS.
My point being: Storms can be "vicious", and they occur all over the Globe; so as Irina noted, they SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTLY. However, I do find that the Media can indeed blow things out of proportion, most of the time.
