What do you think about living in Kingston vs living in Montego Bay? It's been a while since last time I had an unscripted VLOG on my channel, so here it comes! I'm sharing my personal experience of living in Montego Bay vs living in Kingston. PS. THANK YOU for watching! This video ends abruptly on purpose, because very few people watch my conclusions, so I've decided to remove them entirely and see if this works better.
I stayed in Montego Bay for the summer back in 2016 and the main difference I noticed is that you always seem to have to drive everywhere in Mobay even though it's not that big of a city. Basic amenities are quite a distance away from where people actually live compared to Kingston. I live in Liguanea and most places where I need to be are walking distance away from me.
Irie! Another great video!!! I don’t very much care for the abruptness I’m one of few that liked the sign off but now that you’ve made us aware of the change I won’t look for it or think something went wrong. Thanks for this comparative between Kingston and Montego Bay! 👏🏾
There are no green spaces around those new high rise apartments in Kingston. Maybe they might put up greenery but right now I'm not liking what I see with those high rises. That's by Waterloo Road. Fort Clarence is the proper beach. Hillshire has dangerous zones.
You are a real treasure. I was born in Jamaica but you have taught me more about Jamaica than almost anyone else. I love your balanced factual viewpoint, the research you do and also how you compare with the outside world. That is the frame of reference and anchoring point for many. Thank you
I lived in Kingston for a year, and decided it wasn't for me. What I prefer about Montego Bay, is exactly what you described- homes being somewhat up in the hills and away from the business centers of Montego Bay. I need that bit of country life where I can go into my backyard and climb trees and see and hear birds, and have my neighbors give me a hand of plantain from across the fence that they grew in their own backyard.
The type of living you enjoy in Montego Bay is also available in Kingston and St. Andrew. However, you need to visit the northern parts of St. Andrew. All the hilly areas (Red Hills, Stony Hill, Jacks Hill, Gordon Town, Mavis Bank, etc.) have the country live.
What you described is EXACTLY what I experienced as a boy in Kingston, except the part about the hills. In our backyard we had an apple tree, East Indian and Blackie mango trees, ackee tree, a few banana trees, gungu tree, grapefruit tree, cherry tree, sweetsop tree, and maybe a few others I can't remember. And it was VERY common on my street for the neighbors to give away baskets of fruits and vegetables to each other over the fence. I was taught growing up to ALWAYS give and give and give, that's what I saw my parents do with our neighbors. And no matter how much you gave, you still had too much left over. As an adult, I've finally figured out why...because if everyone is giving to each other, then you get back what you gave to others, twofold, fivefold, tenfold. It's the giving that makes your storehouse overflow.

@@NATURALMYSTICMK Maybe so at times but you don’t really have a beach at hellshire anymore. As a child growing up in Independence City in the 1970’s Hellshire had wide open areas of white sand beach but it essentially destroyed by one of the storms that hit the area and then got neglected and wasn’t rebuilt which could have been done with Matalon dredging equipment which they used to create Passage Fort, Portsmouth, Portmore Plaza etc. So what was left of Hellshire beach became “captured land” and people built their shacks there on sand which they lived into and made some into shops. Hi Irene re the Sewage Charges. There is large sewage plant at Soapberry (near Portmore) that serves residents in Kingston and Portmore. Once your home is approximately 100 Yards from the Main Sewage Line, you are charged a Sewage Charge which is approximately the same rate as your Water Bill. That is why the water is so high in Kingston. But I would suggest you check out that NWC bill as it seems a lot to me.

Similarly, the country is hard to describe in a small book. Just take the flora and fauna variety, for example. Really diverse.
Yup, I'm a Jamaican but an American citizen and I'm treated as a tourist when ever or where ever I go. Locals make assumptions regardless of skin color and it can be very annoying. Great vlog, I'm going to subscribe.
Are there solar panels attached to your home? May account for the reason the electric bill is less than when you were in Montego bay. Im learning about Jamaica through channels such as yours , though I was born there... but hasnt lived there in many decades.
Same maintenance on water bill as in the North America water in sewage out and it requires constant maintenance with regards to the different pump stations
I think that the water bill is high in Kingston is because most of the Jamaican population live in Kingston and I think NWC is trying to reduce the amount of water people use in Kingston to preserve water.
As a Montegonian living in Kingston I agree with everything you say. I still prefer Montego Bay though because most homes have a backyard and depending on where in the city you live, dew in the morning. I'm Kingston, that is most times not the case. There is Digicel in some parts of Montego Bay, so when I am there, it is a backup to Flow as well. I am not sure how your light bill was so high in MoBay because mine is the same. As for water, you are very correct.
Yes, I want to know when cruise ships will come to Kingston. That's where I'd prefer to go because my friends live there. They have to drive far when I come in at Falmouth or Mo Bay.
Irina, the reason Jamaicans frequent Hellshire vs Fort Clarence, is that back in the day, Hellshire was far superior to Fort Clarence. Hellshire had much better beach with more sand and no sharp stones in the water. By contrast, Fort Clarence was neglected because there were a lot of jagged stones in the water and the beach. Water there was way inferior to Hellshire because it was filled with seaweed and jagged stones, while there was none at Hellshire. Hence the popularity of Hellshire and the vendors gravitating there! Subsequently, over the years, the coastline and beach started receding at Hellshire and nothing was done to reclaim the beach. At the same time. the UDC took charge of Fort Clarence and cleaned it up and developed it to what it is now!
JPS is another topic to discuss. They don't really read your meters depending on where you are. You can get an estimated bill for years if you don't querry with them and demand a reading.
Kingston has a central sewer system. Every property can join the system if it passes your property. We have to pay whether you join it or not . Sewer and water is about the same.
If you've got an NWC bill of 18-20k/month, you likely have a hidden leak. That's WAY higher than it should be. Get a thorough property check, see if there are any unexplained damp spots, might also be under foundation.
Irina. I brace myself to be called names. Truly, I have been wondering if a person or two, are being paid to vlog negatively about Jamaica. I do not really expect Ja. to be always rated "most beautiful & No1 in the caribbean, as was the usual during my youth in the early fifties & sixties. With the beauty assets in our island, I keep wondering why Ja. often gets ranked down in the teens when reports are done on the most beautiful of maybe 20 caribbean islands. I note, Wodemaya .s wife, Trudy, did say, she was told not to say Ja. was the loveliest of those that she had visited, because people will be "vexed". It is probable that some are thinking: "This little third world island cannot be getting too much sttention." On tv, in NY, we are too often being shown the ghetto areas of the island. Trust me, you speaking so positively about Jamaica, is annoying to a lot of foreigners. I salute & I do thank you.
Many Jamaicans live in the "good part" of Jamaica; and they are NOT "super rich" either. The "problem" is that people think there are MORE "bad parts" than good, because that is what they focus on. This is coming from someone who has lived in many "good parts" of Kingston, and travel to Kingston on my visits back home (most recently in April). Yes, there are "bad parts" in Kingston, but they do NOT "override" the "good parts".
@@JAMAICAWITHIRIE sewage is always double your water usage, yeah, annoying, but it's Kingston, we have a centralized sewage system that goes to Soapberry for processing, as a result, all apartments and Townhouses automatically get attached to it, and private homes will have soakaways dug in their yards and can choose to attach to the sewage system or not to. But Townhouses don't have that choice.
Free is good. Ohio Turnpike has cleaner "free" showers than the big name truck stops. Bcse those tolls pay for rest area upkeep. So we normally get more by paying
I could not live with all those outages. I moved to NYC in 2016 and I have internet outage for 1 to 3 minutes maybe 3 times in total since, and I was mad with the company. I was on the phone, but in all cases, as I make the call, the internet returned. I was NEVER without electricity in all this time, even when we had storms.
And my mom is paying £20,000 in Alman Town. Because people are bridging light. An elderly person with only a fan fridge and a little telly they rarely used
7:27 Less than 10 years ago Helshire had over 10,000 feet of beach….. Over the years the beach has been destroying by over fishing practices and the destruction of coral reefs….. Even the nearby mangroves and crocodile habitats were destroyed by housing development. A lot of ponds, lakes, rivers and mangroves have been destroyed by the NHT and other housing developers….. The swamps in Helshire were dumped to built houses…. These wetlands were home for thousands of crocodiles, birds and many exotic plants. Helshire used to be a beautiful forrest with limestone… Only the older generation would know the beauty of Helshire hills and its breathtaking white sand beaches that spread hundred of miles along the southern coast of St Catherine. Helshire was destroyed by the riches man in Jamaica, who owns the Matalon Housing Development projects.

There are many Jamaicans who love and want to see continued improvements for their country. BUT, even if she doesn’t realize it, Irena still has the benefit being able to go about life in Jamaica wearing a natural protective cloak of privilege, called whiteness, that will never be available to most native Jamaicans. So, experiences and perspectives will be different.

Love Hope Gardens. So beautiful there. Next time the restaurants have an event there be sure to go. Kingston has a better mix of people reflecting how the entire island was many, many years ago. Younger Jamaicans have no clue. Forgot to mention that Apple Maps works better there but only on iPhone.
You make me feel quite nostalgic about my hometown---Kingston. Yes, THE MAJESTIC HOPE GARDENS, EVENTS, THE BLUE MOUNTAINS nearby, and the famous hike I took there. Thank you for always doing such balanced presentations.
Your sewage cost is basically a mark up on your water bill, I believe 100%. You are paying for sewage because you do not have a pit on property, you are connected to NWC sewage system. Most buildings in Kgn, especially buildings built after a certain year are not allowed to have a pit, they must connect to NWC sewage system. I didn't know this was not for the entire country, I lived in Kgn, so I thought this was std across the country. But I own property in spn twn, and its the same there, just like kgn.
@bcharleshenry, Good Point. Here in the States our Water Bill also has a "Sewage" fee, because of the reason you stated. The "sewage" water is routed to a Water Sewage Treatment Facility, and "cleaned" up before dumping into a River or Lake (at least around where I live).
The water situation is probably as you said. Sewage cost. That house you had in MoBay probably had its own soak-away pit where the sewage just soaks into the earth and it’s not managed by NWC. Newer housing schemes, apartments and townhouses usually need NWC’s sewage system

Same maintenance on water bill as in the North America water in sewage out and it requires constant maintenance with regards to the different pump stations
I love what you do.
Irie, can you do a video about your favorite neighborhoods in Kingston , especially where non-Jamaicans would feel most comfortable?
I think that the water bill is high in Kingston is because most of the Jamaican population live in Kingston and I think NWC is trying to reduce the amount of water people use in Kingston to preserve water.
YES for the Hope Garden Video! 😃😃😃
Good morning, You should visit Portmore in the neighbouring parish St.Catherine. It is very similar to Kingston.
👍🏽 Irien this is why I love you so much
Yes, I want to know when cruise ships will come to Kingston. That's where I'd prefer to go because my friends live there. They have to drive far when I come in at Falmouth or Mo Bay.
Hey you are featuring in my side of town Kingston 6.
Hi! Irie can you do a vlog about hope garden i remember has a little girl my mom take me there we learn so much from you❤❤🇨🇦
Thank you!
How’s your husband and son getting on in Jamaica?
Also Bob Marley beach is now a good option for you try it out!
I enjoyed this video
If you've got an NWC bill of 18-20k/month, you likely have a hidden leak. That's WAY higher than it should be. Get a thorough property check, see if there are any unexplained damp spots, might also be under foundation.
my thoughts exactly ..
I'm glad you can live in the good part you are lucky
Many Jamaicans live in the "good part" of Jamaica; and they are NOT "super rich" either. The "problem" is that people think there are MORE "bad parts" than good, because that is what they focus on. This is coming from someone who has lived in many "good parts" of Kingston, and travel to Kingston on my visits back home (most recently in April). Yes, there are "bad parts" in Kingston, but they do NOT "override" the "good parts".
Have NWC come and check your meter, I suspect you have an older installed meter, and you are receiving an estimated water bill.
Yeah, i was worried about that, but no - actual readings, they just double the price because of added sewage charges, which we never had in Mobay.
If its $10,000 for water bill ,sewage is also $10,000 which bring it $20,000
Yes, 7$ US equivalent is reasonable for beach access. To pay for the facilities there
Still too much for beach access, it should be free.
@@hotstepper8420free then who cleans the bathroom and stuff?
Free is good. Ohio Turnpike has cleaner "free" showers than the big name truck stops. Bcse those tolls pay for rest area upkeep. So we normally get more by paying
I could not live with all those outages. I moved to NYC in 2016 and I have internet outage for 1 to 3 minutes maybe 3 times in total since, and I was mad with the company. I was on the phone, but in all cases, as I make the call, the internet returned. I was NEVER without electricity in all this time, even when we had storms.
Hellshier beach is deteriorating. Do a video on that. I tried to some bloggers to do it but no luck.
It's possible the water meter in MoBay has not been changed to the digital meter
Irina Ft Clarence is a nice beach.
It's the same for private residents. My parents pays the same
Thank you, nice comparison.
And my mom is paying £20,000 in Alman Town. Because people are bridging light. An elderly person with only a fan fridge and a little telly they rarely used
Can’t be true.
Yup 💯 %
Just crazy how these incompetent agencies works in this beautiful Island.
Shh Shh no talking about the JPS bill😅😊😂
same in May pen
We are all Ukrainians, thanks for what you do.
When u coming to barbados
.JPS love you 😂😂😂
Have they been reading or hav they been estimating your water bills? I suppose the same question can be asked of the electric too.
Good point, but both actual bills, not estimated.
What is the minimum wages in Jamaica at this moment?. It was about $600 - $1000 a day when I left in 2004
its, 15,000 a week
Hi How much is 18000 dollars to USA?
Present.
14:28 😂😂
There’s always something to do in Kingston🫶🏽🫶🏽 that’s everywhere else coming like country 😂😂
Don't talk too loudly about the electricity bill, JPS will be coming for you.😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Yeah Irina, “Shhhhhh”… 😅😅😅
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is one of the reasons i live your vlogs , because you show the beauty and history of beautiful Jamaica.. I’m sick of the bloggers that just want to go yo trench town and show the so called dangerous neighborhoods.Every country had ghettos.🇯🇲🇨🇦
Lee Williams, you are so right: I was very surprised when a group of us visited the US for the first time and saw that the houses that were not very far from the capital all had Burglar Bars. Also, we were told not to go out after a certain time.
Thanks irie for showing Jamaica in a positive way. I was in Jamaica last month and was pleasantly surprised how the country has developed since my last visit in 2010. I am back in the UK and I surly😮 miss it. Thanks for your ongoing highlight of Jamaica. I love your podcasts ❤.
But these people don't wanna talk bout tht.Thank God fi Irena
I really wish Jamaican would view Jamaica the way you see it. From Kingston JA and I am living abroad and yes miss home.
Am Jamaican and o Jamaica in the same light. We keep forgetting about the other Jamaicans like my self
That will never happen the poor always looking for a way out of Jamaica 🤔
@@justtime2670 why ,
There are many Jamaicans who love and want to see continued improvements for their country. BUT, even if she doesn’t realize it, Irena still has the benefit being able to go about life in Jamaica wearing a natural protective cloak of privilege, called whiteness, that will never be available to most native Jamaicans. So, experiences and perspectives will be different.
@@faithm2535 Oh please , go away with that mess.We will always have our natural advantages and disadvantages in life. Its like the gene pool .Just as she has advantages she also has many disadvantages .Don't allow your secret resentments to undo you....🤔
Love Hope Gardens. So beautiful there. Next time the restaurants have an event there be sure to go. Kingston has a better mix of people reflecting how the entire island was many, many years ago. Younger Jamaicans have no clue. Forgot to mention that Apple Maps works better there but only on iPhone.
I really appreciate the time stamps in your videos, so easy to seek and watch the section I want to see.
You make me feel quite nostalgic about my hometown---Kingston. Yes, THE MAJESTIC HOPE GARDENS, EVENTS, THE BLUE MOUNTAINS nearby, and the famous hike I took there. Thank you for always doing such balanced presentations.
Kingston have everything you can think of it's just the money you need to live the life you want
The most positive commentary on Kingston I have ever seen. Thank you❤
The water situation is probably as you said. Sewage cost. That house you had in MoBay probably had its own soak-away pit where the sewage just soaks into the earth and it’s not managed by NWC. Newer housing schemes, apartments and townhouses usually need NWC’s sewage system
