I have found that water culture is a great way to revive 'rescue' orchids but eventually I like to place them in moss or bark once they bounce back but like you said, each plant is different and some continue to thrive in wc so I leave those alone. Great video as usual, thank you!
Hi Anna! Yes, I agree with you totally! It's always good to hear from other growers that they've come to the same conclusion you have. Hi. I have a Couple Orchids that I Bought from Lowe’s that have been Struggling Since. They were packed in Solid Moss which Dried Up like Concrete Killing their Roots. Anyhow, I Am Going to Try Your Moss Media Technique Soon with Them. I have a Good Feeling that They Will Thrive. Great Video. Love that Southern Charm. Boy Do I Live in the Wrong Area. California.
Hi dear sweet amy wow yes we do want those results 😉 and good tips. I do like to say that the colour of the roots are important... you dont want to water green roots only silvery/gray ones. Hi Rose! Always wonderful hearing from you my friend! I check my orchids growing in moss everyday and make sure it's evenly moist...not soggy. If it's getting too wet, the moisture will collect at the bottom of a vase, and you keep draining until there's no excess water dripping out of the container. Also, if your orchids like more dry time, growing them in orchid pots with drainage holes helps. I grow my larger phals in orchid pots with holes so they will drain better because there's more moss in the pot. That's another reason I put the styrofoam peanuts on the bottom of the larger pot. I hope you have a fantastic day and happy growing sweet Rose!
Hi Lisa! Thanks so much for your sweet comment! It made my day! I wish you much orchid growing success and if you have questions, feel free to ask. Happy growing! :)
Orchid Whisperer I just pulled mine out of its store bought pot. I took a good look at and realized how water logged the roots where. And rotten. I still need to get new orchids moss but for now I've cut it at the 4th notch from the bottom and put it in a small round glass bowl and now it's hanging in a macrema hanger I made infront of the filtered morning light window. I keep my house at 22 degrees Celsius. I don't know if that might be too cold. We don't like it much warmer than that.
It sounds like you're doing great, Lisa! You can use water culture as a temporary growing method until you are able to get some premium grade orchid moss. I use either Better Gro orchid sphagnum moss (you have to make sure you get the right one, they have 2 different kinds) or New Zealand sphagnum moss, and you can find them on Amazon. Filtered morning light is great for Phalenopsis orchids, and 22 degrees C is not too cold, actually that's a good temp for this time of the year. Keep me posted and have a great day! :)
thank you. you've eased my mind a bit. I have order it off amazon. could go to Walmart...for way more than twice the price! Ouch!! anyways. Will hopefully have it by Feb 5th. Hi Yolanda and thank you so much for your sweet comment! I appreciate your positive feedback more than you know! :) Have a great day and happy growing!
I dear friend, thanks a lot for share all you know and learn. I told you that I have an Oncidium Ollie Palmer in full water. Seems to be fine, has two new leaves and a new root is growing. I have it indoor, in a windowsill. But this leaves seems to be small or maybe, growing slowly. We are entering Spring here and i wonder if should I wait warmer days in order to see more size and quickness to grow or change to moss media. At this point, I do not have the chance to buy the same moss you have. I´m looking forward your advice.
Hi and thanks so much for your questions and kind words my friend! :) If you're entering Spring, I would leave it in water culture. Springtime is when most orchid roots really start growing. If it's doing this well coming out of winter, I think your orchid is fine. Have a great day and happy growing! :)
Have you thought about using a small tiny airstone on low in those larger containers. I have seen hydroponic growers where they continuously oxygenate their nutrients?
I've also changed most of my phals to moss...I used the NZ moss as suggested by u...and they are doing so well...most of them are having spikes..thank you :))
Hi. I’m new to this orchid thing. My daughter came home with one for my birthday the other day and to my surprise. This is not a plant you put in dirt. Haha. Well ever since I got her I’ve been on here learning about them and guess what I ended up doing. Buying 2 more. I think I like these plants. But in my learning here. I read that white mole is NOT good for the orchid. Or any mild at that. But yours seem to be fine. I’m confused on that part. And also when I went to Depot these I noticed a lot of the roots turned white but they are crisp not mushy. What do I do about that. Some I’ve had to trim because they were hanging there and ready to fall. But what is the cause of the root becoming white in some areas and some are actually green on that same root. Thank you for all you do. Hope to hear from me or anyone who can help me. Much appreciated
Hi Lyn and thanks so much for watching! I have many beginner's videos that will help you. I have several from Oct 2017, and this one highlights leaves and roots...here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/woeo3rSMin8/v-deo.html I don't recommend trimming the air roots that grow out of the pot, those are aerial roots and the orchid needs them. I explain in the video. Healthy orchid roots are either green or white. If there's a lot of mold growing in your orchid pot, you can repot the orchid. I have several repotting videos from April and May 2018 that will help you. Happy growing and have a great day!
Hi and thanks so much for watching! I use a green kitchen cutting board on this table so that you can see the orchids better. Have a great day and happy growing! :)
Is the nz moss same as they would have at a pet store I've looked for where to buy it and they have it at a local pets mart but I'm not sure if it would have any thing that would harm the orchid?
Hi Mayra! I use the NZ sphagnum moss...you can always try just one orchid in the moss you found and see how it does. If it's safe for animals, it would be safe for orchids. But you just need to get the best grade moss you can. Happy growing!
Hello, I have seen some of your videos and loved them. Great information. Thank you. I do have a question, you mentioned algae in the glass container and white fluffy mold. I had a glass container that was turning greenish as well. I just want to ask, is that a good condition for the plant to live in? Thank you.
Hi Susan! I did a video, "What I've learned in more than a year of growing my orchids in water culture", publish date Aug 17, 2017, where I discuss this. I don't allow the algae to take over, but I don't mind some algae growing in my containers. The orchids actually do better with some algae, in my experience. Thanks so much for watching and for your sweet comment! Have a great day! :)
Hi! I have a video that shows how I water these, here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/ApLN6_bhIOs/v-deo.html If for some reason the link doesn't work, it's my video dated May 9, 2018. I fertilize them the same way I water them...soak for a few seconds and then discard the water and/or fertilizer. Have a great day and thanks for watching!
Hi Amy, I need to ask you a question. I grow only by water culture and have been concerned about what is the best fertiliser to use. Because I'm topping up the water it is difficult to be sure I'm getting it right as some orchids need topping up more frequently than others! Oncidiums seem to be my thirstiest! Okay so you shouldn't make up a batch of fertiliser and keep it if you don't use it all. I fertilise every 2 weeks according to a PH of 6.1 and then 5.5 ph in order for my orchids to take up their required nutrients, (including the water from each Orchid.) Whew! I have recently bought and imported from the states Quantum Probiotics for Orchids. It's a natural product, and an orchid supplement made with beneficial microbes, and says you don't need to use other fertiliser. My question is this, using this product every 2 weeks is it ok to put one drop of this product in the small amount of water for the main orchids, and 2 drops in the larger amount for oncidiums. This seems right to me but I'm asking my guru for her valuable advice!
Hi Chris! I don't use this fertilizer, so I can't really advise you how to use it correctly. You're going to have to experiment with it...meaning, use it on one orchid as a tester. (Not your favorite orchid and one that you can easily replace.) I wouldn't use 2 drops on the oncidiums until you're sure that 1 drop is okay first. Use the smallest amount first, and see what happens. I hope it gives you splendid results! Have a great day and happy growing! :)
Very silly question... I have an orchid that has lost its leaves after blooming. I think it's due to temperature. Some say to throw it our while others say to keep it and see what happens. Instinctively I feel I should expose the roots to light to give it photosynthesis then seen your post about water culture method. Do you think it's worth a try? Roots and center column healthy. Just lost leaves due to too cold. Thanks. Let me know.
If you've lost all the leaves, then the orchid won't survive. But if you still have leaves, the orchid has a chance of survival. It will take time, though...cold damage is hard on orchids. Have a great day and thanks for watching! :)
Orchid Whisperer I took the step and put all older orchids in a water culture. Beautiful leaves (well all but the one) and discovered a lot of rotten roots once I exposed them. Willing to try it and see what happens. Can / should I add a bit of orchid fertilizer to the water? None have ever rebloomed but I'm assuming it was due to the cramped moss packed roots. Also funny how they don't like to sit in water when in media but enjoy a water culture...
I have a video from Oct 27, 2017 where I show how I fertilize my water culture orchids. I do allow them to have a dry day every 3 or 4 days, the roots need wet/dry cycles for them to grow. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask, and happy growing! :)
Ok. I have changed my mind about converting my Phal to water culture because she is doing fine with the median she is in and shw is blooming for the second time. But the roots look terrible and I see a lot of rotting nastiness around the top of the orchid. It's getting cold now. Should I go ahead while its blooming to change the median or should I wait until it finishes blooming?
Robinette Pitts Hi Robinette! It's fine to repot your orchid while it's in bloom. I have repotted several in bloom and it doesn't seem to disturb them. Thanks for watching and have a great day! :)
Orchid Whisperer Always, Orchids are my ultimate favorite flower and you have taught me everything there is to know about this orchid. I killed one before but because of your videos this Phal is alive and thriving. Thank you so much.
How long should I leave my orchid in its media before I decide to switch? I got my first orchid, a phal, yesterday and it's very dehydrated with a lot of dead roots. I'm trying water culture now. From what I've seen and researched, it seems like it could take a few weeks for the plant to even perk up. When should I assess it for potential conversion to moss? Thanks!
Hi and thanks so much for watching! I would go ahead and convert it to moss. Moss will hydrate the roots surprisingly well, sometimes better than water culture. I have a video, "Watch me water my phalenopsis orchids in moss and bark" publish date Oct 12, 2017 that will show you how to water moss correctly. I wish you much success with your phal...keep me posted and if you have questions, feel free to ask. Happy growing! :)
Sometimes when I put a new orchid that I have bought, that has come in peat moss, into a pot with more peat moss, they end up dying. The roots seem to rot. It’s so upsetting. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I don’t overwater them. I wait until the moss seems a bit dry and then water it again. What am I doing wrong? Help please? 😭
Hi! I have a repotting playlist on my channel that will help you. I have several videos about how I repot in moss. Have a great day and happy growing! 🌹⚘🌺
how do u do water culture? I want to buy a lovely phals orchid (I believe it is), which is in our grocery store, in a glass bowl type container, with bark below & moss on top! it seems a bit compact! it is £15! is it worth getting like this? also, M&S have one, in a huge glass jar, so the orchid is actually covered in the jar, including the flower! looks gorgeous, but is it worth getting it like this, wonder how easy to water, etc.? CAN U LET ME KNOW, TKS, MONA
Hi Mona and thanks so much for watching! I have several current videos about how to do water culture, from April 17, 2018, and Feb 4 and 25 2018 that I would highly recommend you watch before you convert them. The orchid you're describing in the huge glass jar is probably a Vanda, and it needs to come out of the jar or it won't do well. I have a video about how I displayed my Vanda in a glass vase from Oct 2017. Keep me posted and I wish you much growing success! Have a great day!
MUCH Tks, don’t know yr name, O.W. The fist one I mentioned, is it worth buying, do u think, & I assume this one can stay in the glass bowl? It obviously has no holes in it, though! Mona
Hi Mona! I live in the US, so I don't know exactly how much this would be in US currency. But orchids, especially in displayed in glass bowls, are expensive so it depends on whether you want to spend that much. If there's bark and moss in this glass bowl, I would definitely recommend repotting it in an orchid container with holes. I don't know how you would water this. I have heard of people drilling holes in the bottom of vases, but you might lose the vase and you'd have to take the orchid out of the vase anyway. Have a great day! Amy
I have started my collection (11) this spring '21, and i am very confused at why your containers do not have airation holes. I use layers of bark/sphagnum moss I soak my orchids about 15 mins when they feel they need water by the weight of the pot about a week...to be honest the roots i do see at the crown, do not look healthy, so i'm doing something wrong :( I'm considering water culture, so i can see the roots...
Hello, which country are you located in? I live in Canada and I’ve really been wondering about where to buy cheap, healthy orchids with good varieties? ☺️
Hi Ewa! It's pretty easy...I fill the cup with water, wait about 30 seconds, and drain it. I have more information on how I care for them in my tutorial dated July 1, 2017. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
Hi Andrew! This is Better Gro premium orchid grade sphagnum moss. New Zealand sphagnum moss is also a good choice. Orchids won't grow in peat moss. Thanks so much for watching and have a great day!
Hi April! Some of my mini phals are in 3 inch plastic pots with no holes...any pots I have larger than that have holes. I have a video from March 18, 2018 where I show my favorite pots, fertilizers, etc. that explains in more detail. Have a great day and happy growing! Amy
Hi there, i love watching your videos. I just wanna ask if instead of moss, could i use LECA for my orchids? I live in Philippines and it is usually hot in here so i wanna try semihydro for my.orchids. thanks
Hi Julie Anne! Thanks so much for watching and for your sweet comment! :) Yes, you can use LECA for your orchids. I don't grow in this media because it's not the easiest for my environment, but I know growers who do well with it. Keep me posted and have a great day! Happy growing!
Hi! Hydroculture is challenging. If you decide to try growing in hydroculture, I suggest you start with 1 orchid. See if your orchid grows well and decide if you like it. It is not an easy growing method. Thank you for watching and have a wonderful day!
Try fertilizer to promote blooms, and also reduce night time temperatures for a few weeks. Blooms should come late winter /early spring. And make sure it gets good light, but no direct sunlight.
Hi Sheila! The fluffy white mold is beneficial to the orchid, so don't clean it off. I have a video that will explain this entitled, "What I've learned in more than a year of growing my orchids in water culture", dated Aug. 17, 2017. Have a great day and thanks so much for watching! :)
Hi Mya and thanks for watching! Once I see a phal struggling in water culture, I convert it over to moss. Whether it's a week or a year, I don't wait until it starts going downhill to convert to moss. Have a great day and happy growing!
Thanks so much for responding so quickly. I have to two phals that bloomed beautifully this year, that I decide to covert over to WC. Of course, I lost the majority of its roots. Now one has a root and the other just a stump. I do semi WC on them, two-three days down in water, and the rest dry. I don't see any growth in them at all. But my question is, should it be growing roots right now? Im in the bay area Ca. Is there a dormancy period in phals after they bloom? Im not sure where to go from here. If its worth a try to move it into sphagnum moss or keep at semi WC. There is no growth at all.
I have a video that you will find helpful, "Choosing containers for orchids growing in moss. Can you place a rootless orchid in water culture?" publish date Sept 17, 2017. At this point, you'll need to place them in moss to get the roots going. I did an entire series this past summer on growing orchids in moss, and you can see the growth weekly. If phals don't take to water culture, they really need to be placed in media. Some phals like it fine, others don't like it at all. Please keep me posted...wishing you the best for these orchids! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. :)
The Oncidium Ollie Palmer I putted in water culture was fine but, leaves and roots are too small. In fact they are smaller than the ones they had. So I decided to move to moss culture. Since then a blackened spot appeared in the biggest leaf and it is growing. What do you think?
Hi and thanks so much for your question! I don't grow oncidiums, but the American Orchid Society has a really good website, aos.org. You might look under their "Diseases" section and see what you can find. Thanks again for watching and have a great day! :)
Hi and thanks so much for watching! If the plant looks good and it's growing, then the roots are most likely healthy, too. If it's a young plant, then it will take time for your to see root growth. But they will grow! Have a great day and happy growing!
GRICELDA RESTREPO I mist mine daily or when it's hot I mist much more throughout the day when I can. I also leave bowls of water next to them for humidity while Im gone, which works for me! I mean them!!! Lol
Hi Jazzy! Yes, you can add bark or lava rock in with the moss, and it will dry out faster. In humid environments, that is helpful. Thanks so much for watching and have a great day! :)
Thank you for your introduction, Different orchid has unique character,🤗🤗🤗.

I have several from Oct 2017, and this one highlights leaves and roots...here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/woeo3rSMin8/v-deo.html
I don't recommend trimming the air roots that grow out of the pot, those are aerial roots and the orchid needs them. I explain in the video. Healthy orchid roots are either green or white.
If there's a lot of mold growing in your orchid pot, you can repot the orchid. I have several repotting videos from April and May 2018 that will help you. Happy growing and have a great day!
Hi, orchid Whisperer, can I ask what kind of matt did you get for your table....tks
Hi and thanks so much for watching! I use a green kitchen cutting board on this table so that you can see the orchids better. Have a great day and happy growing! :)
I'm confused about how you are keeping your moss drained without drainage holes in the container.
How would you fertilize these orchids? Soak in water with fertilizer and discard or leave it?
Hi! I have a video that shows how I water these, here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/ApLN6_bhIOs/v-deo.html
If for some reason the link doesn't work, it's my video dated May 9, 2018.
Robinette Pitts Your comment made my day...thank you so much.
Orchid Whisperer My pleasure.
Hi can you tell me where you got your lovely indoor water feature ,hope it’s of the internet as I live in the uk 🇬🇧
Hi Ann and thanks so much for watching! I bought this water fountain at WalMart. :) Happy growing!
Wonderful video!!!
Terry Klemesrud Thanks so much Terry! Always nice hearing from you! :) Have a great day!
Amy do you many in media and if so can you demonstrate your watering regime please
Hi Chris! I'm planning on doing a video on this soon...thanks so much for watching! Have a great day! :)
How often do you change the moss?
Where did you get this clear plastic container
how do u do water culture?
Amy
tks Amy, that's helpful, I was hoping to get away with keepg it in the glass bowl vase, nevermind!
Hi Jessie! I live in Tennessee, and I buy most of my orchids from Kroger and Lowe's. Have a great day and happy growing! :)
Thank you for your answer, I really love your videos!!
Thank you so much! :)
I would love to know how you water these orchids so you do not over water.
Hi Ewa! It's pretty easy...I fill the cup with water, wait about 30 seconds, and drain it. I have more information on how I care for them in my tutorial dated July 1, 2017. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
Hii what kind of moss is that ? what about with peat moss ? the one that for soil mix ?
thx
andrew
Hi Andrew! This is Better Gro premium orchid grade sphagnum moss. New Zealand sphagnum moss is also a good choice. Orchids won't grow in peat moss. Thanks so much for watching and have a great day!
No air holes in your plastic pots or ceramic pots?
Hi my water culture orchid is not blooming for two years .can you suggest anything please.they keep giving new roots and leaf but no flower.
Try fertilizer to promote blooms, and also reduce night time temperatures for a few weeks. Blooms should come late winter /early spring. And make sure it gets good light, but no direct sunlight.
My orchids that are in fwc are starting to get white fluffy mold like on them should I take them out and clean them.
Hi Sheila! The fluffy white mold is beneficial to the orchid, so don't clean it off. I have a video that will explain this entitled, "What I've learned in more than a year of growing my orchids in water culture", dated Aug. 17, 2017. Have a great day and thanks so much for watching! :)
thanks amy for the video
Thanks for watching Chris! :)
How long did you wait to covert the phals over to moss after seeing the affects of WC?
I have never see any new roots in my orchids. Why? The plant looks good, I see new leaf. And the roots from outside an always wet dry.
Hi and thanks so much for watching! If the plant looks good and it's growing, then the roots are most likely healthy, too. If it's a young plant, then it will take time for your to see root growth. But they will grow! Have a great day and happy growing!
Why aerial roots get dry. Thank you for your fast response
GRICELDA RESTREPO You can mist your aerial roots with water when they get dry.
GRICELDA RESTREPO
I mist mine daily or when it's hot I mist much more throughout the day when I can. I also leave bowls of water next to them for humidity while Im gone, which works for me! I mean them!!! Lol
Thank you for ur advice
😍😍
what about adding bark, and sponge rock, with the moss?
Hi Jazzy! Yes, you can add bark or lava rock in with the moss, and it will dry out faster. In humid environments, that is helpful. Thanks so much for watching and have a great day! :)
July 1 tutorial. Must see it
