Amy, your orchids videos continue to get better and better! You are providing more detail in your explanations of caring for our orchids who want to provide the best care that we can. You are so inspiring! Thank you! Delightful listening to your daughters voice! 😊
Hi Barb and thanks so much for your awesome comment! I think having my daughter as my camera person is a good thing, and she enjoyed filming this episode! I've had several requests for this video, and I'm trying to give as many details as I can. Thank you again for watching, and especially for your encouragement and support. It means more to me than you know. Happy growing my friend! :)
Omg I've watch lots of video on orchids lately. Just started collecting them. I had rotted all the previous ones. Your videos show where u put the in your house which I can see how to grow them. Thank you so much
Hi Amy! Wonderful video, with heaps of useful tips. After the video ended, I ran to the other end of the house and grabbed a plastic cup, and propped up a droopy leaf that has been annoying me for days, so thank you! 👩🌾 I also wanted to share my tip for watering days:💡After removing the water, I place a cooling rack (for cakes) on top of a white square bowl, which is used as a permanent saucer, and let the excess water drain through, leaving the plastic orchid container elevated and dry. I find it a challenge balancing top heavy Phals on pebbles, when even the slightest shift tips it over, but this gives me peace of mind!🤗 P.S. Kudos to your new camerawoman! 👏
Hi Liselle and I'm so glad the video gave you some ideas!:) And thank you for sharing how you water, that sounds so easy! (I like ideas that save me time and keep things lighter! I can't grow on pebbles either...they're too heavy!) I had my cattleya on some pebbles in a bowl, and the pebbles shifted and broke the bowl! So I won't do that again. Thanks always for watching and for your kind comments, it's always wonderful hearing from you. Happy growing my friend!:)
Hi Liselle! The bowl wasn't an heirloom, thank goodness! But the bowl was supposed to be "unbreakable"! lol! That was the funny thing...haha I love that comment about timesaving techniques! You're so right!:) Happy growing my friend!
I use a "hybrid" version of watering mine....I went to the paint department of the store...( Walmart, Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.) picked out a 2 and 1/2 quart size mixing bucket....It is just the right size for my standard phals in bark to fit in and be able to fill to the top of their pots and get a good soak.....My wife suggested that, to prevent HUGE mess I was making trying to water the conventional way.....works for mini's too....just not using as much water.....Soak em then drain em, and back to their growing spot they go....I also use NEAR as much water....and it works when fertilizing....just use the water and top it off as needed....( This is a hybridized method between yours and what Rick L. does) Everyone has their own methods, just an idea to pass along....... Thanks so much for your help, and videos.... I get so many ideas from you... Joe
Thanks so much for sharing your watering method! It's always good to get new ideas from other growers...it can make your life much easier! :) Thank you again for watching and for your kindness, Joe. Happy growing! :)
Plants are loving it and it shows...same method I use on my orchids....I have other methods that I use on others...I have so many orchids and different pot sizes so I use different methods....your plants looks nice and healthy looking...tfs
Always great hearing from you, my friend! I grow many different ways, as well...I let the plants choose how they grow best, and I just listen. :) Thanks always for your support and encouragement, it means a lot to me. Have a great day!
Hi Rick! Thanks so much for your feedback, I really appreciate it! Our fall here in Tennessee has been quite warm, it's like an extended summer with colorful leaves! It's really quite pretty and I'm a warm weather person, so it's perfect...plus, the orchids think they're in the jungle! lol! Hope you're doing well and have a great day!
I watch your videos over and over and continue to learn from you picking up tips until it sticks. You could have placed the cream pot on the plate to catch the spillage 😊
TU I basically do that, however a week later it is still wet. Water pools at the bottom. The whether is 50 at night & 75 during day. Maybe that is why you use the peanuts on bottom.
Hello! Quick question here... I took your tip on reporting orchids in moss back into moss... and orchids that came in bark into bark because it make sense that that's what they were used to. However the only one I have that came in bark... I repotted into orchiata bark (while still in bloom) And while some blooms lasted for another 3 weeks and have fallen off now, quite a few roots are not doing so good (since the repotting) and 2 leafs have also fallen off. My conditions are somewhat dry (at the moment with all the heating) even though I use a humidifier. Should I give it another repotting and maybe into moss this time? Or mix in some moss into the bark? Any tips? Please and thank you
Hi Asa! I've been watering my orchids that are growing in bark more often because my heating system is cutting on so much. I would water more and see if that helps. But if you're more comfortable growing in moss, you can always change it over. I've changed them from bark to moss and they do really well. Happy growing!
Hi Amy! I am very new to orchid and I have watched a lot of your videos recently and learned a lot. Thank you! I have a question: if my orchid is in bark and moss mixture, how should I water it to make sure there's enough but not too much water? Thank you!
Hi Anna and thanks so much for watching! I don't mix bark and moss for this very reason...it's too hard to tell when to water it. My orchids grow in either bark or moss, but not both. Happy growing!
Hi! I actually allow the water to drain straight through my bark orchids...I don't allow it to soak for an hour. I water my bark orchids every 5 to 7 days, depending on what type and what size bark they're growing in. Thanks for watching and happy growing!
I remember this now...I had some chunky bark that didn't retain water very well. (I don't use it anymore.) Now, I use Orchiata bark and it does retain water and nutrients. I have an updated video about how I water my bark orchids...here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/e7_mH-5JhEE/v-deo.html
Fertilizer plant. How do you fertilize them? Do you drain the extra water off after you fertilize them.? I may have asked before but I should have written it down. God bless you. Thanks for all the info you give us
Hi Jane! Yes, I drain the extra water off after I fertilize them. I water them first, drain, then use the fertilizer, and drain. Thanks so much for watching and for your sweet comment! :) Have a great day!
How often do you fertilize orchids in moss? I tried transferring mine in hydroton but seems they're not liking the new medium and I'm getting a lot of dying roots.
Hi! I fertilize them every other week. You can look back at my channel last week...I did several updated fertilizing videos. And I'll probably do one again sometime this week! Thanks for watching!
So very helpful....thanks for this! I see, no compaction...Amy, will you be discussing reduced feeding as we go into colder months? I have been thinking it might be time to reduce...but we are already cold here in the Pacific Northwest....and I have never taken orchids through a winter, just got my first 2 as a valentine gift earlier this year. Count is now 29...what happened?🙆♀️ Their care is so fun and seemingly addictive..and I agree with you, love to see others enjoying this hobby, and a shout out to your daughter...my little kiddos all loved hearing her in your collaborative video! They all think she sounds exactly like you...I think we all enjoy your accents😊
Hi Cara! Thanks so much for your comment! :) Yes, I will be discussing about reducing fertilizer as we go into colder months. Just keep in mind, as the weather gets colder, the orchids won't be able to break down the nitrogen in the fertilizer as well. I learned this the hard way, and burned roots due to this. Also, when the days get shorter in the fall, the plants' growth will slow down as well, so no need for a lot of fertilizer. Very small dilutions on sunny days only will be best. My vandas will get a moderate fertilizer dose, but I'll have them either in my sunroom or in the warmest, sunniest window in my house. So light, temps, and growth all dictate your fertilizer schedule. Thanks always for watching, my daughter and I thank you for your kind words! :) Happy growing my friend! :)
I'm a orchid killer....bark bark bark... I'm Chicago AND my house is dry....dry.... It dawned on me....bark didn't work....I was at bible study ..my gf had dry looking orchid.... I gasped ....bc I just overloaded information about phals..... I did surgery on 2 of mine ..in bad shape....and her orchid.... Straight water culture for hers. Looks really happy.... My two ...1 is basically root...so it's laying on wet bark and moss.... I did fwc on other....it's not happy but clay balls r coming any day... I need help. Lol.
Lol! I hope your orchids do really well, Monica! It took me a while to learn how to take care of them, and then when one of my orchids rebloomed, it changed everything! :) Experience is a really good teacher, give yourself some time! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. Have a great day and happy growing!
Orchid Whisperer thank you!! I actually rescued 2 from lowes yesterday...they looked really bad...so I asked for discount.. 5 dollars... I am excited.... thanks for your videos....you have a sweet voice to listen too....and beautiful flowers....
I just bought a yellow phal at Kroger. All the leaves were green. The temperature outside was in the 90+. The plant was in the truck for no longer than 30min w/o ac. (The truck was not that hot and the windows were down) A few days later, 4 leaves turned yellow... The blooms are doing ok and they are still opening. Could the difference in store temperature and our house temperature be the cause? Any idea want happened and that should I do?
Hi Melinda! I hate to be the bearer of bad news, and I hope this phal turns around anyway, but the differences in temps from the store to the truck and then into your house probably put this plant into shock. If it's hot or cold outside compared to the indoor store temp, I don't buy an orchid. On the days I do buy orchids, I place them in a box in the car and drive straight home. You can lose a plant on a 90 degree day if it's budding and blooming, and has been in a cold grocery store. I hope it's doing better as I write this. Have a great day! Amy
Dear Friend i like to share a bad news of my onsodium shery baby which had a soike 27 " tall . I purchased with spike from our licak nursery in march 19. The media was nust coco cheeps charchol and nothing else . i noticed the plant wwre not giving any growth neither spike made any developments whats so ever!! Suddenly on 20 jun i noticed a psudobulb got fully rot and another was half rot ! I removed rotten one and cut the half portion and used cenamon powder . after 5 days to day i found half cut psudobulb got fully rot and her 2 leafs got yellow! i unpotted and found the the half cut one totally rotten and other one which was holding spike was also got lossely held and it was no way keeping spike and that psudobulb ! so finally 4 bulb was removed and now two bulb with no leaf ! Interestingly roots were healthy !! what couls happen ? 1. Over watering ( The media was not like moss can retain water and make pot soggy ) 2. Bacterial infection . 3. calcium deficiancy Note plz I saw a video of Thailand they stop watering when spike get matured and likey to open bud . And they do keep in dry rest till full blooming !! I do not know what to know from you what you think ? What advice you leave for me for care of onsidium shery baby ? i am scared as i have more 4 onsodium shary baby a d they are newly purchased after they finished bloom , sorry for making a long post here !! You may skip to reply !
Hi Susie! It's normal for one of the old leaves to die back when the newer leaves are growing. It's important to let the leaf die back naturally and don't remove it. The nutrients from that leaf will be re-absorbed into the plant and you'll get a better bloom cycle. Thanks for your question...and happy growing my friend! :)
Hello Orchid Whisper, my question is how do I water a mini phal that does not have any roots. Right now I have it in water. But the leaves are dropping and a little wrinkly. Please help me keep it alive. Thank you and have a blessed day!
Hi Blanca and thanks so much for watching! I have a video that will help you...here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/gDQAFrRxs8M/v-deo.html Happy growing and have a great day! Amy
Hi Melinda! It's perfectly normal for phal roots to grow outside the media. I would wait to repot it until Springtime, when the new roots will establish easily into new media. Thanks for your question and happy growing!:)
Hi Cynthia! When I fertilize my orchids in bark media, I just water it straight through. I don't let mine soak in bark anymore, it was causing some problems. Happy growing! :)
This was very helpful, thank you. Isn't it funny how some phals love moss while others thrive in WC? 😊 And some do well in bark! 😊 One quick question...If you were going to fertilize (instead of just watering with plain water) would the watering process be different?
Hi Caroline! I'm so glad this was helpful to you! I've decided that whatever media my phals thrive in, that's their home. (It's too hard to try to "fit" them into a media of my choice!)lol! And you asked a good question. I do like to water them before I fertilize them, but other than that, the process is the same. I water them with the same amount of water, and then I fertilize them... but with less of the fertilizer solution, because the media is already wet. Thanks for asking me, it makes me really think about the specifics of what I do, and then I can share that on my channel. (I really appreciate your questions!) Have a wonderful day my friend, and happy growing!:)
Hi and it's nice hearing from you! :) I'm not giving up the water culture method. Most of my dendrobiums are doing really well in SWC and so are my vandas. I still have a few phals in water culture, but the ones that were stalling or declining in water culture, I changed over to moss. Funny thing is, the phals that are thriving in water culture are growing really well. So I'm letting my orchids choose which media they want to be grown in. (It's easier on them and on me this way! lol!) Thanks for your question and have a great day! :)
Orchid Whisperer isn't semi eater culture hard to do? I'm still unsure about that and I've seen many videos about the pellets, clay. I wish I knew more. It seems a bit iffy so far in my brain.
janefromtennessee Water culture isn't an easy method for beginners. If you don't have experience with orchids, I recommend you grow in moss or bark. I don't grow in clay pellets... moss, bark, and water culture are the methods I prefer for my environment. Thanks so much for watching and have a great day!
Hi Shirley! I have a video that will help you, "Beginner's orchid tips: flower spikes, brown leaves and sunburned leaves" publish date Oct 19, 2017. Thanks so much for watching and have a great day!
Hi Chris, if they're outside, I wouldn't put saucers that can fill up with a lot of water under the orchids growing in moss. It can over-saturate the media. I would use flat saucers in this case. Have a great day! :)
Hi and thanks for your questions and your comment! :) (She really enjoyed recording this!:) I water my bark orchids when the roots start turning silvery gray. This time of the year I have to keep a check on them, because it's unusually warm and humid for October. So their watering requirements differ from season to season. But for my environment, I usually water them every 4 or 5 days. Looking at the roots is the best indicator of when to water in bark or in moss. Always nice hearing from you...have a great day! :)
Hi! I just downloaded a video today about how I'm fertilizing for spring. Also, about the watering, this is one of my older videos and I've changed the type of bark I use. So that's also changed the way I water. I'm using Orchiata bark, and I don't allow it to soak in water longer than a few minutes. It retains moisture really well. I don't recommend watering with ice cubes at all. It damages the roots. Happy growing!

How often do you recommend to water an orchid that’s planted in bark and moss?
when you see that the roots start/turning silvery grey it's time to water it
Amy, thank you very much for the video. You water the orchids in bark by soaking it for one hour. Do you do that every 5 days?
Hi! I actually allow the water to drain straight through my bark orchids...I don't allow it to soak for an hour. I water my bark orchids every 5 to 7 days, depending on what type and what size bark they're growing in. Thanks for watching and happy growing!
At around 5:33 you water an orchid and let it sit for an hour. What kind of media is that? I might miss why you are doing this?
I remember this now...I had some chunky bark that didn't retain water very well. (I don't use it anymore.) Now, I use Orchiata bark and it does retain water and nutrients. I have an updated video about how I water my bark orchids...here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/e7_mH-5JhEE/v-deo.html

Hi Melinda! It's perfectly normal for phal roots to grow outside the media. I would wait to repot it until Springtime, when the new roots will establish easily into new media. Thanks for your question and happy growing!:)
is that watering the better gro bark in the last pot?
Yes, this orchid is in Better Gro bark.
with the better gro bark how do you know weather to soak it like you do in this video or just run water threw it in a home environment?
I'm new to orchids. How should aerial roots be watered?
You can mist aerial roots with water. If any water gets in the crown of the plant, just dry it with a piece of paper towel.
How do I fertilize my phals that are in bark media? Is it the same as watering them?
Do you reuse your fertilizer water?
Hi dear ☺️ are you giving up the water culture method?
Thanks so much for watching and have a great day!
why is my bottom leaves turning brown
Hi Shirley! I have a video that will help you, "Beginner's orchid tips: flower spikes, brown leaves and sunburned leaves" publish date Oct 19, 2017. Thanks so much for watching and have a great day!
i am not sure how to water 80 orchids yet ... i dont have saucers under them they are on racks outside???
Hi Chris, if they're outside, I wouldn't put saucers that can fill up with a lot of water under the orchids growing in moss. It can over-saturate the media. I would use flat saucers in this case. Have a great day! :)
How often do you water the ones in bark? Twice a week? Or once a week? Great to hear from your daughter! Thank you!
+allfruit Thanks a bunch my friend!
also, what fertilizer is best when it still has blooms on it
