Majora's Mask - Wrong Warp to Test Map

- While this wrong warp isn't hard to perform (it only has a few frame perfect inputs which can all be buffered; I show the frames for all of these with pauses in the video), it is incredibly precise in the sense that if your position at all differs from mine by the end, you will either crash or end up somewhere else. If the steps preceding the positioning are performed incorrectly, it simply will not work, as it depends on actors being loaded into memory in a specific way.
Setup for the glitch:
0. Be playing on the Japanese version.
1. Enter Deku Palace either from the swamp or from getting caught.
2. Enter the room that's on the right side (relative to the Palace entrance), leave and reload it once.
3. Collect the rupee shown in the video.
4. Hover onto the barrier and boomerang the rupee shown into roughly the same position. The rupee's location is not precise; all that matters is that it's on the left fin's path.
5. Go the the door frame as shown, target it to get a straight angle, and make sure you are firmly in the corner. For those of you with access to ram watch, Link's angle should be 0x8000 and his X and Z coordinate should be an even 334 and 1752, respectively.
6. Holding target, press B to slash three times, then jumpslash.
7. Turn straight left, put away sword.
8. Dry roll, release target and press B to do a horizontal slash.
9. Target again to straighten the camera.
10. Put on Zora Mask and hold B to go info first-person mode.
11. Hold straight down (in my commentary I forgot about inverted controls and said to hold up) on the control stick for one frame.
12. Release fins. On the first frame that they are detached from Link's arms, take off Zora Mask and hold straight down on the control stick.
13. As Link runs, look for the frame shown in the video. On that frame, pause, switch to straight up on the control stick, and buffer a target out of unpause.
14. Link should stutter and then run straight into the next room. Once you've caught the fins the precise part is complete and you can wait for an opportunity to get caught by the guard on the left.
If you'd like to know more about the glitch used here, its discoverer GlitchesAndStuff has an in-depth video on using it to manipulate chest contents ( • Explanation: Editing C... ).
These instructions reminds me of one of those rumored fake glitches from the 90s.
Blast from the past, there. There used to be soooo many fake glitch rumors! XD
The difference is the steps in rumors have some normal logic in them. These steps clearly are trying to bypass checks in games.
yeah, it sounded like a playground rumor!
"Oh man I totally wanna try this in Wii VC now"
- Map was removed in the English version
"oh..."
blows my mind how people find things like this
This in particular is a specific application of a more general glitch that was worked out carefully by inspecting memory in an emulator to develop a precise setup. The glitch itself was discovered when someone picked up an item with the boomerang in OoT, walked through a door, and found a duplicate door floating in the air, then decided to investigate further.
Awesome find! Neat that lots of games have ways to manipulate values to allow players to visit testing areas without cheats (i.e. Donkey Kong 64, Sonic Adventure 2).
The debug room is the same one from OOT, in that one the crawlspaces and ladders are glitched as well and can't be used by link. (Kid or adult) Really cool that they just reused the room! How the hell was this found? Lol
Most likely reverse engineering.
sucks that it isnt in the english version, I really hope the 3ds one has the testing map....after all there has to be SOME way to access it, I DO NOT want to mod my 3ds due to the possibility of being bricked, plus i have tons of games ive bought from the eshop and i do not want to lose them :(
I'm so happy to see that its finally been discovered how to wrong warp in MM. MM's runs have often been overshadowed by OOT's because OOT is more interesting to watch. Not anymore, though.
Dude it was found in majoras mask first what do you mean
I'm sorry, this is too similar to those fake cheats you'd find on supercheats back in the day. "Swing your sword 50 times, cut the sign into 3 pieces, enter and re-enter your house 50 times, and you'll beat the game."
this has been the joke since OoT wrong warps and now with SRM lol
Omg dude you Are realy god
How was this discovered...?!
Reverse engineering
good job!
Absolutely incredible! Just curious, I wonder if this test room/glitch is something that could benefit speed runners? Or perhaps not since this is simply a test room that wouldn't remotely help progress through the game faster? Anyways, great find!
Unfortuantely there's not really a benefit to visiting the test area. OoT's debug rom includes a test room that's filled with chests containing equipment, which probably would be useful if it could be quickly accessed in a speedrun, but as far as I know there's not really any possibility of getting to it in the normal game. Probably the most useful development leftover is the inventory editor, which actually can be accessed in MM with a technique called Text Overflow.
@@SeedBorn interesting! Thanks for the input and shedding more information about this. Since you mentioned that the inventory editor can be accessed, I truly wonder if someone will one day find a possibly way to implement it into the actual game for speedrun. It still amazes me that 18-20 years later, gamers are still finding things in OoT & Majora's Mask. I wonder how many gamers are messing around with the test map/room this week thanks to your discovery.
@IIvgmII We can do it on N64 versions with ACE now (but not on wii sadly), its really useful for stuff like RTA 100% NSR
BRUH HOW DO PEOPLE FIND THESE THINGS!?
how do you get back
Does this work on JP Wii VC?
EDIT: Forgot to add that this is beyond incredible
It should work fine on VC. The heap allocation setup applies to both the 1.0 and 1.1 versions.
bro nice discovery
that's amazing
So on the English version does this take you to another level or not work at all?
Trying to warp to the same entrance will crash on English. To be more specific, it was removed from the entrance table, but as far as I'm aware is still actually in the rom.
@Blade hey sorry maybe I didn't phrase my question correctly. In the video he said this setup to get to the test map will only work on the Japanese version so I'm wondering. If you follow that setup what happens/where do you end up if you're on the US version. I imagine it's probably a crash but I'm curious.
@@SeedBorn yeah I thought it would probably be a crash but just wanted to check. Thanks and awesome work btw.
@@brendanmorgenstern3176 well the setup wouldnt work on english since the rupees arent even there, and the memory would be laid out all differently
@@nathanisbored They're not? Wow I honestly thought they were. Oh well thanks for correcting me.
I honestly wonder how people discover these things. And, more importantly, know the steps to achieve these things. Some people have too much time on their hand.

Hey is this possible in the 3ds version?
This will only work on the Japanese N64 versions.
If Rube Goldberg Made a Wrong Warp
holy moly
Interesting
Duuuddeeeee
🤯
I was here before it was cool. lol
