The beauty of System of a Down as a band is the ability to use comical riff sounds or singing approach to address serious topics that makes you question your point of view on those matters when you hear their lyrics.
System was always pushing the limits, notably the part about the media, which is still true to this very day. As Jim Morrison once said, "Whoever controls the media, controls the mind". It's amazing how easily people can still be influenced, even with the internet and the plethora of research one can do to form their own opinion.
When my son was 5 and my twin girls were 4, I remember them in the back seat repeating, "Sugar!" when we would listen to this song.....proud dad moment. Lol
This song is such a call out for the Media. Remember, this song came out in like 2003, and Serj was/is a dissident who is against war in general. The sugar he refers to is the drug that is modern media.
This band taught a whole generation to not feel strange for thinking that not everything shown by the media to be the absolute truth. I am not a consipracy nut, but it is a good lesson to know that everything you are being told by your favourite news spaces is colored. And to be aware of entering an echo chamber when you do. Everyone is weak to this, including myself. But I do take the time, sometimes, to question if what I am reading is colored. To get an objective report of what is happening at any given moment these days is so hard to get. It is almost impossible for any person today to not be in an echo chamber. You can only reach that clarity by actually doing manual effort to break out of that.
peak SOTD was lightning in a bottle with the chaoticness of their musical chemistry, but isn't just noise diarrhea . they were one of the most unique bands ever imho.
Hey, just a suggestion; you should check out metallica's the day that never comes. It's a beautiful song and a very good one for a therapist to react to! Love your content!
Great post. What came to mind for me was the dichotomy of aspartame vs sugar and the fact both can be bad for one's health. Then I wondered about the differences of vicarious and authentic living. The sweeteners and the bitterness of life if you will. Interesting stuff.
Please look into the band Citizen Soldier. All of their songs are based around mental health. I love the majority of their songs but here are a couple suggestions: Therapy, ICU, Tattoos, Face to Face, Say Nothing, Heavy, Wanted, Pretend my Pain Away, Strong for Somebody Else, I Hate Myself, Everybody Hates You, Broken Like Me, Waiting on the Sun, Always December, I’m Not Okay, Would Anyone Care
Interesting that you’re listening to SoaD whilst, simultaneously, wearing a Fleetwood Mac sweatshirt. Just making an observation. As for your take of this song, it’s one of the better interpretations I’ve heard. Serj Tankian goes pretty deep when it comes to his lyrics. There’s always a lot of subcontext compared to what’s on the surface. Great analysis.
I’d love to see some Blue October songs covered! His personal journey over the past two decades is inspiring. Definitely have to start near the beginning, though!
Another song by them "Mercury Rising" is more of a spoken word and speaks to me personally as a diagnosed bipolar type 1 when at my worst, its only 50seconds so it could be a good addition to the end of the "Alive or Just Breathing" video :)
Please either react to Painkiller or Never Too Late both by Three Days Grace These songs helped me get through my time in school and I still like listening to them occasionaly
I feel like the hole videoclip is a psychological thriller . The first scene with the tv host is mind blowing. The first seconds make you feel like a verry typical old school news and then boom its like a badtrip psychosis. The psychological dread just hit you with a brick, jesus slap you in the face, you rethink your whole live in just 3 seconds. The whole acting , cinematography, just wow. Verry mindful. Not demure.love it.
I feel like your analysis is right per say. Just think bigger SOAD is usually talking about larger global issues rather than say a band members personal issues.
6:20 "it's just something that we humans do, we put sugar on things" reminds me of a legendary title "pour some sugar on me" by Def Leppard; it also features a prominent and cryptic sugar metaphor in an otherwise very forward context.
I don't know if you'd entertain the idea of analayzing some rap/hip-hop, but I would love to hear your opinion on some Aesop Rock tracks. I think the songs "Shrunk", "Rings", and "Kirby" are three decent fits for mental health discussion.
Hey, I'm not sure if you read all of your comments, but you've very quickly become one of my favorite channels, because ypou and I feel very similar about a lot of these songs. You love my favorite parts of the songs and react how i react to the lyrics how i do. Thank you for having a channel, you are a bomb therapist.
day 1 of recomending Viagra Boys - Just Like You. ofc i know they are pretty goofy band and all but their songs are heavily focused on moving against society and also at the same time trying to fit in. these songs helped me so much in the past years to understand how important is to sometimes just stand on your own and accept yourself as you are even if you are maybe a "little out". now they are my all time favourite band. i might say that 20% of my personality now is from them :d just dont let the name of the band fool you
I always interpreted the "mushroom people" lyric as the metaphor of how mushrooms grow. Kept in the dark and fed shit. That's the masses. We are mushrooms
The only thing different today from the opening monolgue is the key factor is 'engagement' and 'sensationalism' is secondatry. Traditional media is sinister enough now internet and social media even more dystopian. They're either gonna tell you what they want you to know to make you happy or tell you something to make you mad. They've got you running in circles from 9 to 5 and 5 to 9....YOUR MINE
This song takes on a while did meaning in RU, where during the "b0mbings" which solidified poo teen's rule and provided pretext to the second Chechen war, bags of x-plosives placed by FSB were found by vigilant people of several apartment buildings in Ryazan city, and were explained away by the authorities as "bags of sugar" placed there for "training".
You should do DOWN IN A HOLE or ROOSTER by ALICE IN CHAINS. It’s a very strong song. I struggled a lot like Layne Staley did and I relate with all of his lyrics. I love what you do and I listen to you daily. Side note im in my 8th year of my sobriety and I’ve never struggled more then I am now and I have more then I ever thought I’d have. Makes no sense. Feel like I’m in a hole.
Lol Sugar is a drug. One of the most addictive. That's why they get us hooked when we are young. They've always used addictive substances to control people, and sugar is addictive enough and doesn't have any psychotropic effects so is perfect for keeping a workforce under control and still capable.
I never really thought about that one line. "In the end it all goes away", what if it's meant like the ends justifies the mean. That once you get the results, amnesia sets in on the means of how you got there.
Aspartame is now illegal in most countries but is in so much in the UK and I really try to avoid it...and I researched it after seeing this song...in 1998....so far ahead of its time

Soil is one of their best songs by a mile. Underrated.

You need to do Serj Tankian's Empty Walls
And "The Sky is Over"

I love your reaction, your masterful facial expressions prove that, even 30 years later, SOAD blows minds! They hit the nail on the head!
