- This is how I got into the Nurse Practitioner Program in Ontario. This information is for Canadian RN students (I am not sure what the application requirements are for international students). Keep in mind that not every application is the same and not every university is the same. Every school is looking for something different. Everyone's experience as a nurse is valuable and one type of nursing doesn't favour one person getting into the program compared to another one. Following what I say won't necessarily admit you to the program, these are just some tips that I found helpful for me and I wanted to share with you. I took all the information from the universities website. For more information you can go to the general site: np-education.ca/ If you have any other questions please comment and I will answer. Good luck with the application 😊

WHO AM I
I'm Tania, a nurse practitioner student living and going to school in Ontario Canada. I've been a registered nurse for 7 years. I made this channel because I found that there was a lack of content relating to Canadian NP students on UA-cam so I decided to create this channel not only to document my journey through school but also to provide some helpful information to aspiring NP students 😊
Get to know me • Get to know me 😀 Nurse...
Thanks so much for the information
My pleasure 🤗
Hii, this is very much informative but can you please share more details about recommendation letter. Such as how long it should be or what details it should includes and etc.
thank you 😊
Great content. Thank you
Thank you so much 😊. Happy to provide this information as I wish I would have known before I applied 🩺
Thank you for the info. So helpful. For the schools you did not get into did they let you know?
Yes they let me know. Thank you for watching 😊
How many courses need for np
(Now working as rn)
Their is so many NP programs in the states. You can now do it all online.
Hi thanks for the informative video! Just wanted to ask what schools did you apply to? And when did the schools let you know about their decision?
Hi 👋🏻 I applied to Laurentian, York, Ryerson and Ottawa. They all let me know around May/June... York was the last one to let me know.
Hi. I just applied to PHCNP yesterday. Fingers crossed 🤞
Congrats!! It's definitely a crazy journey. Good luck ☺
Did you get in??
Thank you so much for the info. I am currently in school for my BScN, and I am planning for possibly going for NP in the future. I know you mentioned that all the programs are for primary health care except for pedes in Toronto. I am wondering, are there any options in Ontario (or Canada) for being an acute care NP?
Hi! There is a certificate from the University of Toronto for Hospital & Acute Care for NPs. You can take this course once you graduate as an NP (even as a PHC-NP). This is the only course I am aware of for acute care at this time. This could change later on though. That's the link if you're interested 🙂
bloomberg.nursing.utoronto.ca/pd/courses/np-acute-care-certificate/
You can still work in Acute Care with a PHC-NP. Many of the NPs I know who work in acute care have PCH-NP. I personally chose NP-Adult through Uoft because I didn't want to learn paeds--not necessary because I don't want to work in primary care.
What is a different between BScN and NP?
Prerequisites first the above mentioned course
Currently registered as a Nurse Practitioner or a student in a nurse practitioner program
Hi there! I just had a question regarding determining your GPA. I have my official transcript, do they typically calculate all courses taken during your BScN degree? I have some electives that are non-nursing or healthcare related, do they also consider this? Or do they only consider your last 2 years of schooling? Thanks!:)
They generally consider all the courses taken in your undergrad. Even though they say they look at the last 2 years, they will still take a look at your first 2 years since you're sending in your entire transcript. Electives are definitely included 😊. Good luck with your application!
Thanks for the info. Please, I am a nurse in the middle east and I am finishing the process of immigration and about to come to Canada soon. I got Master's degree. Please, Is their any relation between the NP program and the Master's degree?
The NP program is a Master's degree with the addition of an NP diploma. If you already have a master's degree you can do the NP diploma separately. However, you would have to contact the university directly for international students. I only know the process for Canadian students. Good luck 🤞🏻
Hi Tania, thank you so much for making this informative video!! I was wondering, about the references, do you know if they can be clinical instructors? Or strictly course professors? Thank you for letting me know!
Hi Noemy! Yes it has to be "academic" references meaning professors who can speak to your academic ability (writing papers, presentations, grades etc.). I believe the only time that they will accept a non academic reference is if you've been out of school for 10+ years. Hope this helps! ☺️
@@npstudentchronicles3652 Yes this did help, thank you!
Hey! Thank you for the insightful video. I am completing an accelerated nursing degree with 3 courses being graded and the rest being P/F (2 years instead of 4), do you think that will make a huge impact on my application? Thank you again.
Hi! Thank you for watching 😊. Where are you located ? My experience is from Ontario so I'm not sure if you're planning on applying in universities within Ontario. At the end of the day, they will be looking at your grades, any continuing education you've done after graduation, references and statement of intent/essay application. Hope this helps!
@@npstudentchronicles3652 thank you for your response!! I appreciate it. I am in ontario as well. I am currently in the nipissing scholar practitioner program.
I have amazing first and second year grades, but due to crazy life circumstances my grades are not super stellar for my last two years. Would you recommend for someone like myself (ontario nurse bscn) to attempt to fix those grades by going back and re-doing courses, or just roll the dice on the personal essay?
I would roll the dice and send in your application. I've actually heard that if you explain WHY your grades took a dip in the last 2 years (i.e family issues) they will understand. This isn't a guarantee but it's worth a shot. Don't be discouraged if you get rejected the first time. If you do, then I would try to improve your grades for the next time. But if you're asking me personally I would try to apply first. Grades aren't the only thing that matter in the application. Leadership, being involved in your unit, references, ongoing education also count. So if you have those then I would try. Hope this helps 😊
@@npstudentchronicles3652 that really helps!! Thank you so much for the insight, I truly appreciate it 💗
Hi tanya,
There are two options for canadian np board exam. One is the American one and the other is canadian one. Which one did you write? Which one is better for canadian np ?
I am very interested in canadian np programs .
Hi I wrote the American one! Cheaper than the Canadian one, more options of dates (I think Canadian one is only offered twice a year) and valid in Ontario! Hope this helps
Can a rn give MCAT or do we need to take bachelor's in bio science before applying for MCAT or to any medical school
I'm not sure about the MCAT since I didn't apply or do it
Impertinent question.
Hey Tania, I am an aspiring NP student. I want to ask, did you reuse any of the nursing school books in NP school.
Also, do you recommend keeping any of the books used during nursing school? (I have been out of Nursing school for three years now) Thank you for your input.
Hi! I didn't use any of my nursing books. I still have my nursing books from undergrad just because I forgot to sell them when I graduated but have never used them since then. The books used for the NP program are very different to the nursing books just because the scope of practice is different. The NP is diagnosing, ordering labs, and prescribing medications, something that an RN can't do. We use resources/books that family physicians would use just because of the diagnosing and prescribing part. Hope that answers your question 🙂
Which school do you currently attend? Do you get to do your own research?
Hi 🙂 I'm currently going to OttawaU. We don't do research. We do research "proposals". The Master's Nursing students are the ones that do a thesis as part of their program. We do a "clinical project" during the last semester (I'm doing it now) but it's only a small part of the research process. I will make a video reviewing my classes at the end of this semester, by December. Hope that answers your question :)
Is RN a pre requisite? What if you are an RPN? Can you apply for the NP program? I am looking forward to your utmost response. Thank you very much.
Hi! Yes you need to be an RN to apply to the NP program because an RN is a bachelor's degree. Thank you for watching 😊
@@npstudentchronicles3652 thank you very much. I am an IEN just recently passed my nclex and officially an RN of College of Nurses of Ontario. I am very much interested to become an NP. Your video is very helpful in guiding us to the NP program.
@@elyucanodenciogomez1739 Congrats!! Good luck on your nursing journey 😊
Hi Tania, I am working in a rehab and palliative area. Do we really need acute care experience to get accepted in NP program. Please reply if you can❤
Definitely not! You just need to show good nursing qualities overall. How do you go above and beyond not only for patients but for your colleagues and yourself...yourself as in continuing to further your own education etc. How do you show leadership ? What are some initiatives/projects your involved in or initiated ? So much of the NP role is about leadership, mentorship, quality improvement etc. I find that these are the things universities are looking for. Hope this helps!
@@npstudentchronicles3652thank you so much..❤
Tania, how you divide your abdomen into sections?
I got 1 C grade in my BsC. Will I get accepted?GPA 3.46
Hi I'm not sure tbh. It depends who's looking at your application and other criteria you meet.
Hi thanks for the video 😊 what type of RN experience did you have?
Hi! I worked in general medicine for 7 years :)
@@npstudentchronicles3652 cool thank you so much!
Hi Tania, do they count international experience or just Canadian
Hi! I'm not sure. My training was all done in Canada. I would suggest calling the admissions office to get a clear answer
Are there any people in your program specifically with just 2 years of experience as an RN? or Do schools generally tend to accept students with more experience? Also what was your gpa?
Hi! Most of the students have 5+ years of experience. I personally have not met anyone with only 2 years of working experience. I had an A- average when I applied. Thank you for watching 😄
@@npstudentchronicles3652 thank you! Was that gpa for the entire 4 years at nursing school or the average of the last 2 years?
@@Jshowtime02 It was for all 4 years. The last 2 years helped me a lot...this was 7 years ago since I graduated with my BsN 😅
@@npstudentchronicles3652 do you think your gpa helped you? Do marks matter a lot?
@@Jshowtime02 Grades are definitely important but not all of it. It's hard to say because I got rejected from 3 universities but accepted into 1 with the same application (different essays though). But wherever you can, try to do your best!
What is salary of nurse practitioner for freshers??
Hi! It depends on the employer. From what I've seen it ranges from $90-120,000 per year or more of you go to remote places where there's not a lot of healthcare (like up north Canada). But it really depends on the employer. Hope this helps!
Hey are there any NP programs that doesn’t require 2 years of work experience? Any np programs in Canada that transitions straight into the program after ur bachelor?
Hi! Not in Ontario. To apply to the NP program in Ontario you need 3640 hours. In the application process, you need HR to fill a form to verify that you have worked those hours at that organization. I am not sure about other provinces in Canada since I only applied within Ontario. Hope this answers you question :)
Hi, miss. I am an International educated nurse and just passed my NCLEX RN and still needs to work as an RN. How would be my requirements to become an NP?
Hi! I'm not sure about international students and don't know any in my program. I suggest reaching out to the university you're interested in and asking them what are the requirements for international students. Good luck 😊
How did you maintain a high GPA during your BScN?
A lot of praying and Red Bull 😅. But seriously, I use to have a study group with some other students and would study at home independently as well. Just a lot of hard work. Can't remember the exact details since it was long ago 🙂
Hi
i got 65% in bsc nursing can i get admission in nurse practioner course
Hi. You need a B overall (GPA) but it's best if it's B+...so 70-75% overall GPA
@@npstudentchronicles3652 means with 65% i can’t get admission in nurse practitioner course
Yes, you can
If you compare GPA, its 55% of Indian College study.
@@ramanpreetsingh6727 I did my application yesterday only
Hi Raman
Did you get into NP course? I am also applying and has 65% in. Bsc nsg.
Hi I am an international nurse from India, with five years of experience. I did my bachelors of science in nursing. I recently passed my Nclex . So am I also eligible to apply for np!?
Please guide me.
Hi! Thank you for watching😊. I'm not familiar with the process for international students. I would contact the university you're interested in and ask them directly about internationally trained nurses. Hope this helps!
