Lovely guy. When I saw him after he'd retired I said to him how gutted I was and that I'd put £20 on him to win the title that same season. He just said sorry and joked about me wanting a refund. Top bloke.
No disrespect to today's riders, Shakey et al...but these were the glory golden days of Super Bike racing. World Supers with Foggy too! Simply fantastic!
Paul Bird has said he won't be running him next year, and he's landed a pretty cushty job on the Eurosport team. Shane has nothing left to prove, and I don't think he will be back. But saying that, with Leon and Jake moving on, perhaps he thinks he could win another one!

Walker should have been Champion that year. He was absolutely distrought after his engine blew up at the last round at Donnington. I always thought he made a mistake going to GP's on the uncompetative Shell Honda. He should have stayed with Suzuki and gone to WSB in the factory team alongside Frankie Chili when he had the chance. Its a shame but I think that crap season on the Shell Honda coupled with the massive dissapointment of losing the BSB title in such a cruel way destroyed his confidence/desire & he never really came back the same rider after that.
The 016 like Foggy is a story of against all odds. My deepest respect to Carl. You note his looks to his bike in the garage , so connected. Carl understood the 916 and what they did wrong with the later bikes.
The Ducati 916 is the greatest bike of the last century. Ducati had no money , just a fanatical team. Against all the odds they found a rider who wanted to win.
There was a race about this time where Hodgson was a wildcard in World super bike, at Brands Hatch and he totally walked away from the whole field and I have never seen a replay. Anybody else remember this?
Terry Rymer did the same in 96 at Thruxton Race 1 on the Old Spice Ducati. He's missed Saturday due to a endurance racing commitment. He was on course to repeat the feat in Race 2 but the bike shat itself.
He could absolutely rip. Saw him at VIR in 09, AMA round, I was wrenching for Jeff Wood, Neil was on the back nine career wise but blazing fast. This race is all twins, was that a specific class in the BSB series?
When a jockey in horse racing has a sizeable led or had rode well the majoity of the race you will hear the fans yell.... DONT FALL OFF for its the only way to lose now. Same goes for this guy. After he caught the entire field all i could hear in my head was DONT FALL OFF! lol
Neil Hodgson: Stalls on the grid. Also Neil Hodgson: You daft twunt, after the race I'm having a word with you! Neil Hodgson: Rides like the wind to get away from an angry Neil Hodgson.
crazy how dodgy the track safety is even 20 years ago... haybales on the outside of druids, no barriers at the layout cut throughs, so easy to lose the bike and have it flip onto the other side of the track. Mental lol
Great performance from Hodgson! Given how bikes are ridden today, it looks (to me at least) so strange to see them ride now: it looks like they're sat upright on the bike going around the corners. Their bum is almost completely on the seat! The commentator says "look at that lean angle!" at one point -- to be fair, Marc Marquez was only ~7yrs old when this race happened, so I doubt that many people knew about him or that he could ride quite like he can now! =P
What a load of old toff the only reason he was able to do that was that ducati he was on had way more power he even talked about that years later in a interview with Walker
