So true my great Aunt is dying of a stroke. I have enrolled to be a speech pathologist. I am ok but the nurses were so upset as the swallowing test did not pick up major swallowing issues. As soon as I said I was a prospective speech pathology student. They saw me as a source of comfort. I told them that they were doing a good job but she misses her husband and never recovered. Nurses really love speech pathologists because when we do swallowing tests we have the patient’s life in our hands. So we get how scary it is to have someone’s life in your hands. I felt so happy that I was able to be a source of comfort to them. Such a great profession.
I’m going into my first semester of my undergrad Speech Pathology major this fall and I am so excited. I’ve talked about doing this for almost a decade and finally getting this off the ground is unreal! I look to these videos for inspiration! Thank you!
And I’m an introverted person and very shy with anxiety but I’m also a people person too I love people helping and am very caring I hope this will work for me the SLPA because I want to be independent and have a career
This is the current mental dilemma i am having while considering a possible career for my future,i am extremely introverted, shy and have massive amoints of anxiety, but at the same time,i love helping people become better and healthier versions of themselves,it fills me with such happiness sharing compassion and bettering the lives of others, but i am quite conflicted as this is a very social Job
Hi, thank you for speaking about your experience as a introverted person. I am also very shy and awkward at social skills, and I have ASD. But I’m still very interested in helping people and wanting to study SLP. Would you like to update or share your progress or current feelings about SLP?
Your passion for this field is very obvious. Keep doing a great job of introducing this field to young minds who might consider SLP as a career one day.
I'm currently a primary school teacher in Australia. I'll be starting my Masters in speech next year and I can't wait! So over with how teachers are treated.
You are pure gold thank you so much for your speech pathology videos. It is because of you that I am now sure that I want to be a speech therapist. Thank you so much for what you are doing for the UA-cam community.
In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of choosing SLP as a career as opposed to going into something like psychology or medicine? The reason I’m comparing them is that I consider all 3 to be “helping professions” in the sense of having that direct impact, so I was wondering if you could touch on why SLP stood out to you as the field that you ultimately decided to go into (if you ever considered anything else like those other careers I mention)? I’m also wondering about this career in terms of licensing procedures and how difficult/easy it would be to move from one country to another as an SLP professional compared to the other careers I mentioned. Thanks!
I’m studying SLP in Czech Republic and I had some doubts if its right for me but I have to say that this video made me think more about it and I think i've made the right choice ☺️
I recently decided to leave nursing school during my last year to pursue speech language pathology. Part of the reason was the insane stress nurses go through everyday and having people’s lives in our hands..I was wondering if stress is a big part of a speech language pathologists life?? Obviously some stress is good but not the amount I was experiencing as a nurse..This video was super helpful btw! You have a very soothing voice so it was easy to listen to and very informative!! 😅
Blank I would say the amount of stress shouldn’t be as much as a nurse! The only time an SLP may experience that stress is if they’re working in a medical setting since they do technically have someone’s life in their hands when doing swallowing therapy. But as as SlP there are so many different options and settings so you don’t have to focus on swallowing therapy if that’s not what you want to do! 😌
I’m still deciding my major and I just feel iffy towards nursing... but I’m looking at other medical careers and everyone’s saying nursing is better bc it’s better pay and more job opportunities. Idk what to do lol
I think I really wanna to be a speech pathologist! But I need to pray and ask god if this is the right path and I can relate to the kids because I have a IEP and had to take speech. But I worry because of having that if I may struggle with pronunciation of certain words lol.
Yogiagurl I think a lot of people get speech as a child! I know a lot of people that got speech therapy when they were younger and are flourishing now as adults :) but it really depends on the person and the situation of course, but do not let the fact that you had speech as a kid stop you! You can do anything you set your mind to I think :)
Great video! I'm starting my first semester of post-bach classes for SLP. I already have a bachelors in bio and recently learned about the field. Could you possibly do more videos on how to get into SLP programs and more on what your program is like?
I spent most of my life trying to find trades careers not finding anything that I felt passionate about. It wasn't until I spent time volunteering and promoting a children charity I realized my passion and skillset is talking to people and any time that I do something for someone even something small that helps someone or gives them a positive experience they wont forget I absolutely love that. School seems like a daunting thing since im a 36 year old with just a G.E.D and the pre-requisites seem high and it could be such a competitive program to get into. Do you have any advice or anecdotes for a mature student such as myself?
I’ll be a sophomore (undergrad) in my program and I’ll be starting my real coursework this coming semester! It’s online due to the pandemic which is a bummer.
I searched a lot about this major and I liked it so much, it made me desired to study it. Although next month or so, I will finish my bachelor's degree from the English language department.
Hey, I’m an English major as well and I was wondering if you were able to get into a slp masters program with an English major? I know a lot of people come from psychology or teaching so I’m wondering if I can even do this with an English degree
Actually, I didn't found a scholarship to support me taking a master degree. As for your concern, I've searched about that too and I've found a lot of universities accepted an English degree because it's somehow related to the field, and also there are universities offer prerequisite courses before you start studying Speech-language pathology as well.
hi, thankyou so much for making this video! i’ve been debating on switching my major for elem. education to slp but i’ve been a little nervous because i’ve always been familiar w education but was just recently introduced to slp! you’ve definitely helped me to understand what becoming an slp entails! 🥰
I am planning on going to school for speech pathology in 2022 I’m only going to be a freshman in college 2020 but I’ve wanted to be a speech pathologist ever since is was 10 and this video helped a lot and I subscribed
HI Jessica, I am so inspired by your video. I am French Brazilian live in Paris and looking forward to change career from Economic/Management science to a career that is exactly how you describe Speech Pathology : ). I would love to exange and learn more about. it, I hope to have the change to integrate to it. I should probably do some volunteering in the field to find out more about it. Thank you so much for all you shared.
Hi! May I ask the reason why you decided to change your major? I mean I was hoping to pursue a economics degree as well and still cannot decide whether it's the one.
Hello! I have a question. Do speech pathologist wirth with people who have trouble with nonveebal communication as well as understanding social ques/body language?
-Ive been looking a lot into slp but I'm 24 right now if I were to do a bachelors and master i probably wouldnt graduate till I'm like 30 idk if it's worth it
Hi! Thanks so much for this vid! My major is communication sciences and disorders currently and I have been questioning changing it but your vids have been helping me! I’m wondering if you plan to be apart of ASHA?
The college I live near has a masters in SLP, but not a bachelors. I’m not able to move. What would be the best bachelor degree substitutes to prepare for a masters in SLP? Thanks!
I want to go into this field but I was never a science person and I am just so bad at science... This is holding me back because I am afraid I will fail all of the required classes and just fall behind... any advice for me?
Hi! I just got my degree in Speech Pathology and I wouldn’t consider myself to be very good at science but I made it through!! I think what’s so great about the science aspect of this major is that it’s all applicable and based on real life concepts. It’s not all about memorizing science formulas or incorporating math. You do need a mandatory science course (either physics or chem) to be ASHA certified. But overall the major courses in Speech are not so scary! What I like is that there is so many study guides available online for the speech science classes, quizlets really saved my life :)
Question! Can you get a different undergrad degree and then get into the masters program? I’m in social work right now, but I’m thinking of going in SLP. Am I already at a huge disadvantage?
you dont have to do speech pathology as an undergrad to get into SLP graduate school, but you may need to take a post baccalaureate program or take pre requisites in your graduate program as far as i know!
I have a question I am currently at a community college in my 2nd semester and I am required to take a foreign language all 4 semesters, was this true for you ?
Hi i have a question my name is Nicole I’m 24 I want to become a SLPA but how hard is it or difficult to become a SLPA and then SLP I will try my best but I’ve been having anxieties what if I never finish and what if I never get a job or what if I get a job and get fired thank you for sharing your videos I really appreciate it😊♥️
Hi ! So I’m going to college in the fall and I think I want to change my major from nursing to this. I was wondering in the 4 years of undergrad what did you get your bachelors in? & are the classes very stressful and hard ?
I’m a freshman next fall. I changed major from nursing to SLP I’m excited to explore more about this!! The university I will transfer too has a bachelor for audiology and speech
Be an ELL teacher. You wont have a life with all the paperwork and they overload you with students. Many are leaving everyday. Pay is low for all that you do and hours you put in.
@@Friendly_Black_Hottie I would not leave your ELL job. The workload us bad. You will be swarmed with IEP meetings , evaluation meetings , paperwork, and heavy documentation. If you get higher salary it doesn't matter because you will be working hours of unpaid time at home after working an hour day.

@@char6081 yes especially in the hospital. In the community you are able to avoid them a bit more.
