I'm currently studying to become an SLP, so watching this process of collaboration within the hospital setting was so exciting! Swallowing is a complex process but it happens so seamlessly for so many of us that we often take it for granted. Thanks for this, you're such an inspiration!
I love how educational your videos are but fun at the same time. As a doctor, it was interesting to see what is actually done when we order these investigations.
I'm an occupational therapist and was very excited to see this video! Fingers crossed you'll be interacting with the rest of the rehab department at some point!
Your video actually introduced me to speech pathology. I am a 1st year grad student now! :) Thanks for all the great information you give on this channel!!
I'm a nurse that is addicted to your channel! Seriously, I've only discovered your channel probably like 2 weeks ago and I cannot stop watching your videos. I wish we would be able to work together but I live in the UK, lol. You use little to no makeup but you are so pretty, your soul is beautiful and you have such a bubbly personality, despite being tired or worn out! Your videos always cheer me up. They are so educational and interesting, I really love to see the differences between the two countries and I am simply amazed at how open minded and comfortable people are in front of the camera, it's awesome :D ... In here you are not allowed to film in the hospital, let alone vlog and show someone's face on social media while at work, lol. But I am very happy that you can do that so please, don't stop uploading videos!!! xoxoxo
Amazing video Siobhan! So insightful! My mum is a speech pathologist in the school system -it’s interesting to see how different the job can be in a hospital setting.
I was 40 in March. I had a cryptogenic stoke on March 11th, 2019. I was in the ICU in Barrows Desert in Phoenix for 7 days. I, luckily, had a thrombectomy that saved my life. I’m now back to work part time and only my speech is impaired now. (Most won’t notice my speech impediment). I couldn’t swallow at first. I had suppositories for medication. My swallowing and physical deficits can back fast, but it was the thrombectomy. I understand how crippling this life could be. I pray for your patient and love your videos! I’ve now had 5 surgeries. Loop recorder implant, PFO closure, endometrial ablation, and cardiac ablation within 4 months. It was sad and chaotic. I’m so glad to be back to my normal life (mostly).
This is amazing! I am a brazilian registered dietitian, currently on a two-year multi-professional residency program in Cardiopneumology and I absolutely LOVE this kind of interaction. In my context, sometimes it is still hard to break the barriers between doctors and other health professionals, since we still have a cultural unspoken hierarchy "system" between the different professions, but little by little this is changing. Interdisciplinary work is absolutely crucial for the patient and amazing for our learning process. Always enriching. Love this, love this!
As an RT i cannot tell you how incredibly helpful these vlogs have been! It really wraps everything up into one coherent bundle that i can digest. Thanks so much and keep it up!
as someone who aspires work in dietetics and has seen many speech language pathologists during my treatment (cleft lip and palate), this title really caught my attention! I loved seeing the test! unfortunate but very interesting...
I’m currently a first year SLP completing my CF, and I miss the hospital setting so much. During my internship prior to graduation, I worked in a rehab hospital with a great deal of patients with dysphagia. I completely agree with the shakes and “ice cream” desserts tasting great, but a lot of my patients were simply discouraged about not being able to eat regular foods and drink thin liquids at the moment/anymore. It was tough for them to come to terms with their new normal and the only way they could drink their morning coffee was with two packets of thickener in it. At that point, it just doesn’t feel the same in their mouth especially if they already have sensory deficits. Not to mention, puréed macaroni and cheese or turkey and gravy doesn’t look appetizing. I found that just acknowledging their struggles really helped their buy-in to trying the thickened liquids and our swallowing exercises and strategies.
I always appreciate when you do videos with other disciplines. It helps me understand what my students who want to go into those fields are going towards. :)
Hi Siobhan, I am a pharmacy student studying in the US. I just got done with the GI/nutrition module at school and it is so awesome to see the process (including things to monitor: such as refeeding syndrome, etc. ) in clinical practice. Thank you for the education! - Ivan
The biggest mistake any professional can make, is to disregard or look down on other disciplines such as us speech therapists.. Thanks for the video! ♥️
I don't know what province you are practicing in, but I wanted to thank you. I had to go to the hospital in my Province yesterday, and the care I received was nothing short of angelic. Thank you, Dr. Siobhan. Thank you so much for caring for all of us on the worst days of our lives. And thank you to every person in the medical field.
I’m a decently new RN on a med-surg floor, and I honestly had no idea that this is what dieticians and SLP’s do! So interesting and informative, I’m loving these types of videos. Keep it up!
Thank you for showcasing an aspect of the path of SLP 😍😍 . Speaking from my own experience as someone who is pursuing the path of becoming an SLP, everyone always asks me what the field is and what SLPs do and so this is truly a great depiction of one of the many things SLPs do ❤️
If drinking the feeds by mouth pour them over ice! I’ve found my patients tolerate them SO much more if they are super cold. Great video! I’ve always been fascinated by SLP as I worked with babies and small children post cardiac surgery with lots of swallowing struggles and their assessments seemed like magic haha.
I saw your video a few years ago and made me want to become a speech pathologist. Now I’m in my second year of college pursing speech pathology. Thank you! 😂
I'm late to the show! I have been binge watching your videos for the past twenty four hours! May I offer a patient's view of the SLP? Twelve years ago after a right side CVA, my SLP during our sessions together discovered that although I could read a written very well, I was demonstrating an inability to comprehend what I was reading. SLP's help stroke patients to relearn to think clearly, follow instructions. Re- use our mouths correctly. Tongue exercises to help swallowing .They do too much for one video. Love your videos!
This video was so GREAT! As a dietitian and new professor I will definitely being sharing this with my students and colleagues because most RD's (including me when I first started clinical >15 yrs ago) thought SLP's only gave speech therapy not swallowing too. Luckily I am blessed to have several good friends also SLP's who I shared this video with them too. IT takes a village and thanks for creating this video to share this reality in clinical setting.
This is so cool! I'm glad I found this video. This gives an awesome insider perspective into how these professions function together in a healthcare setting and what each professionals role is. I want to be an SLP so I really appreciate this :)

I'm an SLP undergrad and I'm so glad you did this video! So insightful!
So inspired by seeing the respect you have for various disciplines needed in the hospital. I am currently in school and my overall goal is to become a registered dietitian. It was amazing to see and I would love to see more with RD's!
I'm currently studying to become an SLP, so watching this process of collaboration within the hospital setting was so exciting! Swallowing is a complex process but it happens so seamlessly for so many of us that we often take it for granted. Thanks for this, you're such an inspiration!
Seeing the food going down was awesome! You’re literally the best doctor on UA-cam you’re always learning and showing us new things
I love how educational your videos are but fun at the same time.
As a doctor, it was interesting to see what is actually done when we order these investigations.
I love that you stay a student! There is always something new to learn, and I love that you truly enjoy the process. I wish you all the best! 🥰
I love how you experience the things your patients have to go through. Makes you empathetic and credible when you talk to them. Keep it up, Doctor!
I'm an SLP. Thanks for this. The hardest part is getting patients to drink thickened liquids when they're appropriate and safest. Love Magic Cups!
I'm an occupational therapist and was very excited to see this video! Fingers crossed you'll be interacting with the rest of the rehab department at some point!
Your video actually introduced me to speech pathology. I am a 1st year grad student now! :) Thanks for all the great information you give on this channel!!
You're sooo well spoken! 🙌🏽 Pls. continue to inspire us! ☺️
My mum is a speech pathologist in the school system -it’s interesting to see how different the job can be in a hospital setting.
i love how you are trying everything. Many doctors do not. It may seem like something small but when a patient knows you have tried it; it helps.
If I ever go to the hospital in Canada, I hope you're my doctor :)
As an SLP student this was awesome to witness and the scope of practice of an SLP in a hospital setting. Awesome work!
I can’t wait until I’m a doctor too:)
Same
Me too!💃
College is hard but you have to give it your best. Don't give up.
Wow i am also.
Me too!!
This is awesome! As an RD, I truly love working alongside my SLP colleagues - they bring so much value to the team.
😂
This is amazing! I am a brazilian registered dietitian, currently on a two-year multi-professional residency program in Cardiopneumology and I absolutely LOVE this kind of interaction. In my context, sometimes it is still hard to break the barriers between doctors and other health professionals, since we still have a cultural unspoken hierarchy "system" between the different professions, but little by little this is changing. Interdisciplinary work is absolutely crucial for the patient and amazing for our learning process. Always enriching. Love this, love this!
Amazing! I love seeing the interaction between different health care professionals! Medicine really is a team sport!
Hi Siobhan,
I am a pharmacy student studying in the US. I just got done with the GI/nutrition module at school and it is so awesome to see the process (including things to monitor: such as refeeding syndrome, etc. ) in clinical practice.
Thank you for the education!

The biggest mistake any professional can make, is to disregard or look down on other disciplines such as us speech therapists.. Thanks for the video! ♥️
Not with nurses we would be lost without speechies.
I don't know what province you are practicing in, but I wanted to thank you. I had to go to the hospital in my Province yesterday, and the care I received was nothing short of angelic. Thank you, Dr. Siobhan. Thank you so much for caring for all of us on the worst days of our lives. And thank you to every person in the medical field.
shadow an OT next if you get a chance!! 🥰 (I’m a second year Mac OT student)
Great advice
I’m a nursing student and I love your videos! You are truly an inspiration 💕🙏🏽
Good luck with your studies and look after yourself.
I am in nursing school but I love seeing these vlogs from a doctors perspective!!
This doctor is amazing in so many ways. Wonderful personality, taking the time to educate people on the different angles in hospital, staying calm during multi disciplinary procedures & assessments, plays a violin...list goes on. What can't she do?
I really wish I had a doctor like you! I went to a overcrowded emergency room for bad drug withdrawals. The entire process was just miserable. You seem so personable and kind.
THANK YOU for highlighting the difference between a Dietitian and a nutritionist. Definitely not the same! My favorite video so far!

Thank you for highlighting the work of an SLP! As an SLP, I often hear “I didn’t know a speech therapist does that, I thought you only teach kids how to say /r/!” I appreciate your willingness to learn and even observe/participate in the SLPs assessment in order to expand your knowledge about our scope of practice! I enjoyed this video! It’s always nice to work with MDs like you!! :)
