As a native New Yorker it breaks my heart to see how they’ve chopped up these once awesome apartments. $1300 a month and you have to share a bathroom.
I'm not a native NYer & you can see the remnants of what used to be there & it is awful what they're doing piling people on top of each other like this. It's nothing but acclimating people more & more to cubicle living really. 15 minute cities where you're controlled by remote signal. Awful.
Yeah.. Freshly painted flophouse.. Nothing more repellant to me than sharing a bathroom...
Change is inevitable. But don't forget, people were once stacked and packed packed all up on each other like rats in a pile in the tenaments of NY. It's all about perspective and costs. If you have immagination and ability to design (see apartment therapy) you can create a funky space for yourself. It's cozy in the Winter and you should be out doing all Summer. Communal work spaces are a write off and a way to get out. Also this beats living on the street, a shelter or out of a car. And I can gaurantee you a refugee would take this over a camp anyday! Until you've been a natural disaster survivor, domestic violence survivor, or experienced another displacement tragedy, you can't know how grateful a lot of people would be for a space like this. Out of the elements, running water, and a commode, that's more than millions of people get.

And you get a dining room where you get free meals. On the downside, there is no menu to choose what you like.
True. Take Supermax in Colorado for example. Inmates there have everything they need in their cell, including a shower and their own toilet.
I said the exact same thing! I couldn't imagine having to go upstairs to use the bathroom. What if someone is in there and you can't wait long? I wouldn't pay that much to deal with that. Also,I can't live without a couch and at least some living room space.
All of these are horrible and I feel sorry for anyone that chooses to live in any of these.
And this is why my daughter still lives at home.
I really don't like sharing bathrooms with strangers especially post-covid. Also, I like that they glossed over the fact that the $2895 1-bedroom basically has no living room/living area. No space for a couch at all. It almost looks like it was a studio where they just threw up a wall to create the bedroom area. Maybe that's why the defunct fireplace is all the way in the corner and that weird support column in the kitchen is there. I lived in a place similar to that and I found out later that it used to be the living room of the apartment next door. They just walled it off and made a "studio". Also for the 3rd one, why do you need a full size dishwasher when you barely have anywhere to cook? No oven and just a 2 burner hotplate for $3,500? NYC is getting crazy.
Exactly man. I don't understand the logic of having a dishwasher when most of their kitchens are basically in a hallway. And most don't provide washer and dryer which is way more useful than a dishwasher.
Ita. Having a dishwasher w/o an oven makes no sense to me. The first two apartments are not really apartments but oversized closets. The deal breaker for me, besides all of those stairs, would be having to share a bathroom with complete strangers. Sorry, I can't do this!
No the crazy part is that there isn’t any governments that makes it illegal for rents and amenities this expensive.
It’s also crazy that people aren’t fined MORE for doing this price hike.

UA-cam or google "Rents too damn high", an African-American Pastor was speaking about the high cost of living and rent prices about 10 to 15 years ago. People back then laughed at him because he was speaking on behalf of the middle class and poor African-American community. The thinking of everyone who watched him was the people complaining either need to get better jobs or move. 10-15 years later and now the high cost of living and rent is affecting everyone. I left San Francisco 30yrs ago because I saw the writing on the wall about the high cost of living there and knew I was never going to make enough to live on my own. Its also when developers went into the poor and middle class neighborhoods kicking people who lived there out. Everyone was like yeah, they're cleaning up the bad neighborhoods. I'm like trust they're coming for yours next and they did, remember this "what you allow to be done one can and will be done to you". The wealthy will continue to live off of and better than the middle class and poor.

I'm honestly surprised Murphy beds haven't made a big comeback in NYC. I once stayed in an apartment in Oakland CA which had one. Amazingly, it had never been removed--they were once common but I'd never seen one before. It was gorgeous too, golden art deco legs and beautiful detailwork so it was very stealth when up--just looked like more nice architectural molding since it was such a decorative late Victorian building. Anyway, it made living in a small flat so easy! Take note, landlords!

It's not like they're outdated pieces of furniture. We bought a stupidly expensive solid oak Murphy Bed for our office room (for when we have more than two other bedrooms worth of visitors in our 4BR house), custom made in Utah. It is great, and entirely modern - built in 2021. It has a heavy closed-cell foam (think TempurPedic) queen mattress on it, comfy as can be.

The first apartment isn't really an apartment. It's a dormitory. Who in their right mind would live in a place where you go up some stairs to use the bathroom 🚻? I guess for those emergency situations with the bathroom, you could have a commode, or compost toilet?...This is sort of tongue in cheek, as I could never not have my own bathroom. Sharing with other tenants is a definite deal breaker. I would also have a toaster oven or air fryer, since there's no oven. You could cook some decent meals with that.
Love watching your videos. I could never live in NY but enjoy seeing all the neighborhoods you tour. Rents are crazy there! That first apartments rent is more than my 5 bedroom 3 bath house mortgage!!

I'm sorry. I just couldn't share a bathroom. And there's no kitchen either. Since there's no bathroom, why couldn't they at least have put in a bigger sink? As far as that Murphy bed goes, I think I'd get a good mattress and lots of pillows and have it double as a couch and a bed. A small drop-leaf table on the wall next to the fridge might work as a place to eat and serve as a desk as well. The built-in shelving would have to used for clothes storage, with one shelf for a pantry. However, no bathroom is a deal breaker for me. Not to mention the cost!

I have seen videos about what it's like to live in that 1st building with the teeny rooms. Folks get pretty creative making it work for them.
I think you have a lot of people who live outside of New York. That don't understand why someone would live like that. But it must be, like the thing to do. I would like to see a video of why people would want to do this.
People move to NYC to seek their fortune; more opportunities than anywhere else in the country if you're willing to work for it.
It is back to student life. Not for me, it is a reason to not move to NY or to move out of if you already live there like that.
Sharing a bathroom would be a non-starter for me. Of course, I suppose I could always have a chamber pot for night-time usages, like my grandparents had back in the day. I think that the odd little space behind the column in the first one bedroom could be a great little home office. Put a chair behind the column facing sideways and a small desk back to the side wall. There might even be room for a small bookshelf or filing cabinet beside the desk. A small expensive apartment like this would make more sense if you worked online and wanted to be in a neighbourhood where a lot was going on. Then part of the space would be decuctable. But the no bathroom - can't see that happening for me at least.
Yup. No individual bathroom is a no go. Imagine getting the Martian death flu, both ends, no waiting. I've been sick on just a couple of occasions barfing every 30 min for several hours. Living in one of these would be a nightmare for me and anyone else sharing the bathroom..ugh !

I stayed in a 4story one family house (in a renovated basement studio) in Park Slope anytime I’d go visit my youngest. Same place 6 times. I was invited up for dinner one night, and the house blew me away!! Huge!!!

I've seen tiny houses that at least had a bathroom honestly I would rather have a tiny bathroom than no bathroom skip the clothes closet I have a tiny bathroom now ,it's surprising how you can have a good tiny bathroom

Unit 1 looks more like dorm rooms for students than something I would want to live in. Unit 2 is a definite improvement over the first one. Still way to tiny for my taste, but doable for a grad student on a budget. Unit 3 has all sorts of good features. Like the in unit laundry and dishwasher. Decent for a married grad student.
The small one with the Murphy bed is okay, but only if you could afford it.
The last one is okay, but I think an oven is more valuable than a dishwasher.
Instead of a hot plate, you can get an electric frypan. You can make anything in them.
Agreed, a dishwasher is not a priority for me. I could survive without an oven, but I need 2' of counter space for prep.
The Murphy bed is a good idea, at least it gives you daytime space to do yoga.
But the deal breaker for me is not having a toilet. 🙁

I was thinking put a sofa with a fold out bed in there instead of the murphy bed. Yeah not all sofa beds have to suck, but you get what you pay for. Stayed in a condo in Florida years ago that had a surprisingly comfy sofa bed. Or you could do like our family did growing up, put a rolled up foam "mattress" over the sofa bed to make it bearable lol.

The 98-square-foot place is doable for a minimalist, though I'd go for a single bed. Three toilets and two showers for ten people can work if they keep them clean. The second tiny one is just too small. $2,900 for a basic one-bedroom isn't cheap. For $600 more you get in-unit laundry, a dishwasher, a tiny balcony, and everything is more updated, but it's pricey for a one-bedroom!
If I had to live in NYC, I would take either of the tiny apartments over having a roommate. Since they both have running water, I would get a flushable camping toilet, rig up a portable shower (that could be taken down and stored when not in use), and have a portable washer/spinner for clothes (drying them on a clothes rack), making the unit self contained. @@dudeeronomy3805 There are a couple of ways to do this.
1. You screw, or glue, a hook on the lowest part of the ceiling, where you can stand. (The tiny apartments they showed both had lofts and that would've been the perfect place for a portable shower) If there is no low ceiling, you could get a large "L" bracket, (or a large plant hanger) attaching the short side to the wall, with the long side at the top and jutting out about 2 feet. Then get four, 1 inch circumference, 2 feet long, pvc pipes, along with four 1" pvc elbows, so it makes a square. Get 4 pieces of light chain (determine what length you need) and five "S" hooks (big enough to hold the 4 pvc elbows, at each corner, and one for the ceiling hook). Hang it up, attach the shower curtain, with shower curtain hooks, to the PVC pipes (you can cut the width of the shower curtains, so get 2 curtains) and make sure where they meet, you overlap by two holes, so the water is contained. You get a three ring kiddie inflatable swimming pool , and make sure the bottom of the curtain is inside pool (you can empty the pool with a pan, or a plastic, manual (they also have battery operated ones) kerosene syphon pump, into the sink, when you're done) For the shower head, you can go a couple of ways: You could get a regular hand held shower head, and an adapter to attach to the sink (if you're close enough and the faucet is adaptable) or, buy a portable usb hand held shower head, where you put the pump in a 5 gallon bucket, filled with hot water. The entire shower, after it's dry, can be broken down and everything fits into the 5 gallon bucket.
2. Buy a water proof portable pop up camping shower tent (they fold up flat), still using the 5 gallon bucket, usb shower head, 3 ring kiddie pool at the bottom, and emptying it would be the same.

I was thinking as long as you have some kind of hot and cold water supply and somewhere to drain it, there's a lot of possibilities. I mean, when I was a kid, my family traveled in a little camper. It was just a 3 of us, but we had a way to cook, sleep, shower and all that in a space about the size of a van.
So basically you have to leave the small space you call an apartment to #1#2 in the middle of the night and also to shower. No real kitchen either. That's what you do at a camp sleep away 😴. Wow! While paying $1295.00 monthly. Naaaw!! but to each his own.
The rails are not for coat racks, but I believe are picture rails. You hang pictures from it and not putting nails in the wall.
What a cute little snack area in that fourth unit! Ya know... these really weren't bad offerings given their location and pricing. St. Marks is a very hot area and if you don't want roommates any of these would make great starter apartments and still affordable to save money for the next move. The sharing of bathrooms in the initial two units ($1300/month and $1200/month) is not the best optimum but if I were grad student, young professional just starting out, or a new transplant to NYC, I could work with them. While I did not like the third unit ($2900/month) I could even work with that! The non-working brick fireplace grabbed me. But it's the fourth unit (with the cute snack bar masquerading as a kitchen) at $3500/month and in-house laundry would be my choice pick. Fantastic job, Skye!

We've seen other rooms in this SRO previously. The building, bathrooms & showers always seem to be well maintained. I agree with you about urs perfect for a grad student or even an undergrad. The cost of a single room at Cooper Union is actually close to $16K which does not include a meal plan so these are really comparable if a person doesn't want to live in the dorms. This is the 1st time we've seen a Murphy bed in any of the units & it's not a bad idea. I'm sure one a mattress is added it won't pop up off the floor. I just can't believe that the corner of St Mark's & 3rd Avenue still doesn't have any construction going on. I think the last place was the best, even with only the snack zone (I knew I could count on you for that remark). What I found strange was that they'd actually used a full size refrigerator. But there was a SINK SPRAYER!! The only 1 2day lol. It did look like it was a chop job where they added a wall to make a bedroom tho.

In the olden days, the first building would have been called an SRO and been populated by men 50+ whose main occupation was drinking their lives away. Unfortunately, those poor souls have relocated to a bench in the nearby park.

The price to share a bathroom in New York with a permanent mailbox in a building in the nice part of town is $40 a day. That's 2/3 the daily earnings of a minimum wage worker working two jobs. Absolutely wild
Actually, the $2895 1br had the best kitchen. There was a full stove and a full fridge. That place with the pedestal is perfect for sticking an upright freezer. While none of those places really wowed me, I'm glad you showed one person places that were actually affordable, even if you do have to share bathroom and shower facilities.

As someone who's never been to new york, or even The United States in general I've only ever seen new york apartments in movies and tv shows and never knew how expensive or how tiny the apartments really were. The apartments look nice and cozy in the movies these just look like expensive dives. I always wanted to move to new york and live in an apartment but seeing these has really changed my mind. unless i become a millionaire that can afford the nicer apartments ive seen in movies.
The Murphy bed is balanced to take the weight of a mattress, that’s why it seems to want to return to an upright position when it’s “unloaded.” Once the mattress is on the bed, it’ll stay secure to the floor. And YES, put the bed up during the day-gives space for a nice sitting room/living room. It’s no trouble to take the bed down / put it up.
No place to put the mattress when you store the bed.

Apt. #3 with the column? Put a couple of floor to ceiling Ikea bookcases in there. You now have a walk-through personal library area and it will look great. Plus, with all of them you have the cred of an East Village address and people will picture you living in a huge loft.
I was thinking exactly the same thing, plus modern art.
Also that apt with the giant island, I would keep that, just pull it out from the wall, put stools behind it & then you have prep space , storage etc .

I like the hardwood floors, great view. I know rent is high in NY. Owning a nice apartment is pretty high. Stay well and safe 👍
3rd apt - Place tension rods between the column and the wall for pantry items or a thin bookshelf face the kitchen for pantry or face the side wall and put a small desk and chair for an 'office'.

That place with the weird column, if you built book shelves between it and the wall or even built a little bar into that are with some overhead cabinet it could work wonders for the place.

I could only rent the first unit as a "pied-a-terre" for those days that one needs to stay in the city, away from his real house somewhere else....I lived in a similar-size maid's room of a larger apartment when I was very young and, only for less than a year, but at least that room had a tiny bathroom and a private entrance, did I mentioned I was very young?
I would absolutely live in the closet apartment! EsPECially with the little loft that would allow me to put a bed in. I know that there is a Murphy bed but I have grandkids who love running around big cities with their granny and they are too old to sleep with her.

For 3495 thats 1600sqft apartment in tx and near an expensive college. Its just mind blowing how messed up inflation and luxury new york screws people out of good living. Id be dying
My ultimate nightmare is sharing a bathroom with strangers. British unis you get your own room and bathroom at least off campus accommodation. I paid extra for ensuite. I just about kept my sanity about the kitchen, however my bathroom should be respected. Even my friends hold it in until they can get to mine because they know my bathroom is clean. Rarely in times of desperation use public bathrooms. eww

Those tiny apartments on St. Marks have helped a few young UA-camrs get their video careers started. They have all said staff cleans the bathrooms/showers more than a few times a day. They have to supply their own toilet tissue and soap. Me? I just miss St. Marks Comics. That was a great little store. It is now in Brooklyn, but that's not the same!

I remember when i lived in San Diego CA about 25 years ago I lived in a 1 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment for $650.00 a month. Now it's probably $1800 - $2100 a month. How times have changed.
I wouldn't want to share a bathroom. However, this looks better than some of the other micro apartments that they have shown where you had to sleep on the loft and also didn't have bathrooms inside the apartment.

The first one I would probably just go with a fold down futon sofa. The drawback to the shared. Shower and toilet is you would be constantly hauling your supplies to and from your apartment. Also waiting on a shower and is there enough hot water for the day

As for the last place… if all you need is a hot plate (since you don’t cook much) why do you need them dishwasher? If you’re just reheating takeout you won’t need to wash many dishes either.

So when U point out the tiled post in the EAST VILLAGE...I have to point out that you should know this legendary mosaic artist in NYC whom ìs/was a Vietnam Vet whom came back after serving to live in the East Village and go on to tile up posts etc....in the neighbourhood!! There are documentaries on him and he's/was still living there less than ten years ago. Someone had made a website for him and he was selling mosaic belt buckles!!
In California, you can rent a 2bd, 2 bath with a patio and backyard, 20 min from the beach for $1825. I would never move to NYC to rent a literal closet for double the price.
When the Murphy bed has a mattress on it, it’ll stay down by itself. They’re balanced for a certain amount of weight on them.
