I'm visiting Osaka in 2 weeks. I am just super impressed how Japan maximizes the amount of living space (for the most part). Like with helpful small gadgets and separating the toilet from the shower. In America they will rent you less than 300 square feet studio apartments will full size ovens, 4 burners and everything.
People complaining about the size are forgetting that the price of this apartment is $400. You’re not getting a large house with a yard in any major city in a developed country for $400.
THAT My kiddo in Omaha pays over 650 for a tiny studio plus all utilities and wifi etc on a very low income despite being a Honors graduate! So yes most of Europe and America is not supportive of their young people who choose to be independent and work hard. Also we have too many coming in allowed or now via a very porous unsecure border with false identities, social security cards, false college graduations employed and able to live with 20 others in nicer apartments ( 2 on signed lease) again letting our young people down. At some point we will not have actual workers actually paying taxes so just saying its a sad big mess for future generations we have allowed

In a lot of places in the US, you’d be hard pressed to rent a single room in someone’s house for $400. An entire fully-functional apartment (no matter how small) for that price is a steal. lol.
use your tea pot to heat water and add to the washing machine and a pot on the stove too. Only when you feel like somethings need to be done. Also, you can soak something in the bathtub. Say, a blanket, soak in hot water over night in the tub and in the morning put it to wash in the machine.
@@kimberdesu140 Why did you say .."the shower"? It looked indeed as a bathtub...or are showers in Japan looking like bathtubs, but you can't really sit in it?
You know, I guess I just didn’t think too much about it when making the video, but I think the reasoning is because I more often shower than I do bathe. So I called the space a shower because I usually use it for showering.
@@kimberdesu140 Thanks for the clearing-up. Still, it's a really cosy place. I saw often in Paris places that were not that good as yours. Althow they often use the space also up...like a elevated bed. Just was thinking about that when i saw your place. And then i realised ...you have the clothing area ...and the door to your balcony ...so that was a short thought 😶
I was wondering if the machine is installed on cold water but heats up to a degree of your choose when in use? Mine works like that but I live in Europe 😊Algorithms yea the same reason I saw this video too but I tend to watch Japanese apartments they mesmerize me 😅
Great apartment! Much bigger than many in Japan. i giggled when you talked about the floor being cold. I live in NS, Canada. In winter I always wear thick socks and warm slippers because unless you have in floor heating or carpet, its a given your floors will be cold. It's June 15th today and im wearing socks with house slides same as you:)
I laughed when I saw your comment 😂 my friend here in Japan is from Canada and I am from Arizona. The climates we come from are so different. Arizona is really hot so I never really wore socks or slippers indoors because it’s not necessary 😂 I bet my friend could definitely relate to you 😂thanks for watching :)
Yes. And maybe from the mindset as well. I think, as an American, you grow up thinking you need a lot of space even if it is unnecessary. Small living can be very satisfying 😊
Yes. It’s funny because when I show my family they all think about how small it is but I wish they knew how big it actually is in comparison to other places. Separating doors was such a nice nice nice bonus :)
Im very proud of Japan, that it allowed young people to have their own small, but cheap apartments, affordable for studenrs, or just anyone, who wants to start independent life. ❤❤❤❤
Well that was super interesting! The algorithm suggested this video, and I admit I probably otherwise would have never seen it. I also admit that now that I’m in my 50’s and entrenched in a certain way of living that I’d find getting accustomed to this very difficult. But you appear young and adventurous, so good onya! You may not use your balcony, but what wonderful natural light it brings to your space. These will be fantastic memories for when you’re older~
Such a sweet message. I didn’t even know it, but it’s what I needed today ❤️ I’m happy the algorithm brought you my way 😂 Even I was unsure if I would be able to live in such a small space, but like you said, I am young and adventurous and it has helped me quite a bit 😃 It has been a very great experience. One I will treasure for the rest of my life :) thanks for watching and commenting!
Your apartment is homely and cosy. I like the layout of it as well also having them double doors make it less claustrophobic when the weather is nice and having them open.
Thank you. I was going for cozy so I’m glad it appears that way. The double doors are nice but I’m so scared of bugs I have rarely left them open. Those big Japanese spiders are always lurking 😳😖😂
@@shiralleehaggart72 The quip was that she is and I was an English teacher and in America homely means ugly and I assumed you meant homey. But after looking it up I see that apparently in other places homely doesn't means ugly. My mistake. Sorry about that.
You have used the space well! Lots of clever extras there. Love the idea of adding duvets to your side wall. Also think I would break down and by a table instead of whatever the blanket is covering and a chair to lounge in because it would probably fit. Great that your bathroom can be a drying room!
If i was in that apartment longer i think i would eventually break down and buy a table and chair too. It get tiring sitting on the floor after awhile 😂 thanks for watching 😃
I love your apartment. It shows how creative the Japanese are in optimizing space. I love the wash/shower room and yes separate toilet area is wonderful. Thank you for showing us your beautiful apartment.
I love that your living space is properly utilised and that you actually own many things which we usual viewers have at home; there are many UA-cam small apartment tour videos having too few items (maybe for the pinterest minimalist aesthetic purpose) which isn't practical in my opinion. Great video by the way.
To some extent my room is staged, of course I cleaned it extensively before video taping 😅, but I also considered hiding stuff 😂 and then I thought it would look “too much like Pinterest” 😂 so I tried to leave it as normal as possible. I’m happy it looks practical to viewers. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment !
I really like it. It's really cosy. I think i would enjoy living there. I really love plants and flowers so i could see myself filling the patio area with them. Maybe a bird feeder too. Thank you. I really enjoyed watching.
Beautifully arranged. The only thing that would drive me crazy would be the thin walls and hearing my neighbors or them hearing me. But for $400/month you can't go wrong!
I live in an old house. Leaking roof but, covered til owner stops being cheap. However my own one bedroom suite for $548, no hydro bill. Front yard, ocean in the not very distant view from front bedroom window and living room. Just no stove, cupboards or fridge. Because I pay what I do. I got a RCA blue retro smaller size, use a griddle, microwave. Baskets and open shelving. No tub so I have to wash all by hand in my kitchen sink. 63 and pray some day to have a machine apartment size machine. I have Fibromyalgia but try my best.😊🇨🇦🙋🏻♀️
Hi, maybe someone already wrote this, but just in case, the buttons you didn't knew about in the toilet are for pressure and movement, the two closest to where you seat are mae and ushiro ( front and back ) to move the nozzle to where to want it, and the other two buttons up are for the water pressure yowai and tsuyoi ( weak n strong ) hope it helps, for me I find that the position is always quite back, so in my toilets we had set them a bit to the front, it's quite useful 😊
Very cute apartment, and it's great that it's so functional. It reminds me of my first apartment when I lived in San Francisco years ago. Hope you have a great time in Japan!
I don’t know if you use natural air to help cool your home in high temps, but that the doors slide both ways means that you can have them open on either end to allow for in/out air flow. It will flow more effectively than having one door all the way open.
Wow! That’s so cool. His experience in Japan was probably so much more life altering and enriching than it is now for many people moving to Japan. Things are so easier for foreigners compared to how they probably once were. Im sure his stories about life in Japan are very interesting
It’s lovely for one person, not as tiny as some of the apartments on here. I still can’t get used to the idea that Japanese people living in cities don’t ever seem to have a living room but I understand that they go out to meet friends rather than entertaining at home.
Yes, the culture is so different. In many situations a large living space really isn't necessary, but I grew up with one so I do think it was something nice to have every once and awhile :)
Right, not many apartments have this. I was very fortunate. Thanks for watching. Stick around. I’m going to try and make a room tour if my current apartment 👍
Very cute place! Your use of space and storage is awesome, looks cosy and tidy! We had issues with limited kitchen counter space so bought a stove cover which is amazing for food prep/ dirty dishes when not cooking.
I think the basin above the toilet cistern is brilliant. When I lived in Scotland our water came from a spring in the hillside and in the summer it was scarce. Reusing water would have been ideal.
I like how you made it pretty with the greenery and flowers. I would move the bed to the opposite wall so I could access the storage without tripping on the bed though and would have a solid wall behind the bedhead.
This is fascinating and very cool! I live tiny, in 180 sq ft, so I really appreciate how every inch is functional. I love how appreciative you are for what you have. Your home is wonderful. Thanks for the tour.

I think it's a cute and well designed flat . I would have the bed on the opposite wall facing window. Having AC above you whilst sleeping would not sit well with me . Also better access to wardrobe. Thanks for the tour. 😊👍
I can't imagine living somewhere where locking doors is not a priority! The mindset alone is different and says a lot about Japan and its safety vs America.. The biggest con for me: I would not be comfortable being able to hear my neighbors all the time. As you noted it s a con but would be a deal breaker for me as it is here in America. Thanks for the video as it is very interesting to see the different cultures and lifestyles. And you did a great job sharing that. Thanks for the video!
I thought about what you said and I never thought about it in the US when I was living there, but I also think noisy neighbors would be a deal breaker for me as well if I ever went back. In general my neighbors in japan would talk at a normal level but the walls are thin so it really can’t be helped, whereas in the US I felt the walls in my apartments were much thicker. I think if my neighbors can be heard through those thick walls, something is definitely not right, and that’s when it becomes truly annoying 😂 Thank you for watching and leaving this comment. It is interesting to see the thoughts of people watching my videos :)
I’m in central Victoria, Australia, and we don’t lock our doors until bedtime. The sliding door and front door will be open with the screen doors unlocked. Very safe here.
That's a lovely apartment! Very clever layout and storage solutions, nice color scheme and I would put a lot of plants in that balcony. The kitchen is a little too small for my taste, but still pretty functional compared to some microapartment kitchens out there.
On Amazon there are some soundproof foam panels that you can piece together so that you can have better privacy. The only ones that looked at or blue and black squares but surely you could find them in other colors. Just a thought.
I’ve had many people talk about how watching my video makes them grateful and more appreciative for what they have and honestly , it’s not such a bad thing 👍 I was grateful to just be living 3 hours closer to my husband at the time, so the apartment was really great for me :)
I had that same realization. Even when I would go shopping I would want things but then think about whether i really needed it. Small living can be great for personal growth I think, and your wallet 😂 Thanks for watching
It's really cool to see your apartment. I know the thin walls would bother me a lot, but I really like the space that you have. It also looks really cozy, I like the decorations you've done.
I have limited knowledge about this since I’ve only ever lived in one apartment in Japan, and this apartment has only foreign tenants, but as far as my situation goes, yes there have been complaints about noise in my apartment. Usually the noise has to be pretty loud, reoccurring, and bothersome for someone to make a complaint though. I think as long as you are making noise at reasonable hours and days you shouldn’t have any problems. What I have seen so far is noise being made past 10pm on a work night so my advice to you would be to just play on the side of caution and keep music at a reasonable volume during reasonable hours (anything after 9am and before 10pm on a weekday. You should be safe :) great question. Thanks for asking. Hope my answer was slightly helpful !
I haven’t finished watching the video, and paused to THANK YOU for not making us watch through all the stuff in your pantry and cupboards!! Totally agree with you that those are the most annoying parts of apartment tours! I would fast forward through them or just quit watching!
Very cool to see your apartment in Osaka! I'm in Morioka (though looking at moving to Yokohama) and haven't had a chance to do an apartment tour yet, but I love how cozy you've made your space.
Upon moving to Japan it was my first time to have a space all to myself. I had always shared with a room mate and had to make mutual design choice. When I found out I’d be living in my own I was so excited I started planning out how I would decorate my room and I’m happy to say it fit exactly what I had imagined. I’m so happy many people like the set up of my room because I too am super pleased with it :) thanks for watching. I hope you can find a nice place in Yokohama that you can make your own !
I didn’t know that. Japan is the only place I’ve ever lived abroad. Since I grew up in the US we’ve only ever had houses with a disposal. It’s crazy to me seeing the difference. I think having the net is better than the disposal though. Growing up the disposal would break or things would accidental get stuck and it’s a whole mess. Having a net is much more simple I think. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I thought about getting one for the longest time and each time i decided I would buy it I would go all the way to the store and change my mind lol. I always thought, just simply sitting on the floor was cheaper and efficient for me. But it would be nice, no doubt about that :)
I don't know about other countries, but Japan is a really humidy, so if a bath dehumidifier is not included, it is better not to have a shelf in the shower room. otherwise around of the shelves will quickly become covered in mold.
It’s very true. The mold will grow quickly, but I’m not sure if going without the shelving would be a great idea. There is barely any storage as it is. Instead I would say clean regularly to stay on top of the mold instead :)
I expected a tiny lounge behind the closed-off door for entertaining guests and maybe a sofa that could be converted into a bed... But that was interesting to watch. Thanks for sharing...❤
Great video and what a cute apartment. I adopted the no shoes rule long ago. I love the beginning of this video. "Oh". I imagined, "Oh. That's where I left my camera. " lol
Thank you :) the no shoe rule is nice. I’be been doing it since I met my husband and I haven’t wanted to go back :) Omg that’s what I should have said lol
As a Gamer, a small cozy space is pretty ideal for me as Japan embodies that minimal design for a lot of the apartments & homes I see you & others stay in. So long as I can use a toilet, shower & bathe, have a fridge & pantry space for food, & somewhere to sleep & game, that's all my needs met. And you don't generally have the insane prices on housing like the US does, I don't think Japan has rent control, but to my knowledge it's not as much of a zero sum game with real estate & housing.
I agree. Perfect space for gamer types. It’s all the essentials and I really like that. I’m not sure about the rent control but so far pricing as been as good as I had expected. Thanks for stopping by!
@@kimberdesu140 No problem! You said the walls were pretty thin though didn't you? Would have to invest in panels to dampen sound though if you were going to live in a building like that to not drive your neighbors nuts even if you play with headphones on & the TV low haha
I hope the patio takes on a whole new meaning soon, because that would be my favorite spot and there's so much you could do to it, incl removing the bar, for starters
Did i say hate? I don’t think so. I haven’t watched this video in awhile, but i think I more so was wondering why it opens two ways. Or maybe i was talking about how the double doors make the room cold in winter and hot in summer since all the air seeps out. I’m not sure 😂 but hate is a strong word. I hope i didn’t say hate 😂 I actually like a room with a lot of light. Sunshine cures the depression I get living here sometimes 👍 Thanks for watching :)
I live in Germany and for almost three years I lived in a small apartment (room) of 12 square meters. The apartment had everything, a shower and a toilet, a small kitchen with a refrigerator, a wardrobe, a bed, a nightstand, a table and two chairs.
Wow a table and two chairs even. I felt chairs were not good for my small space but somehow you found a way to do it. Good for you. Small living doesn’t have to be bad living :)
Love this. Tthough, the doors could all be either accordian or sliding. These guys are famous for those. The practically invented sliding doors. Saves space
Yes. It’s called a kotatsu. There are many kinds. I got a basic one for just 500 yen at a recycle shop. One of the best purchases I’ve made since being here :) very comfortable if you don’t mind sitting on the floor and definitely keeps you warm. Thanks for watching :)
My sister in law has a modern apartment in Japan. And she has a bathroom dryer system like yours. I was completely stunned and floored. I don't quite understand it. I guess Japan gets humid so bathrooms can easily get moldy. So using the bathroom dryer system both dries the clothes and dehumidifies the bathroom. But it seems like overkill when you could just have a normal American washer dryer. But maybe it uses less electricity
I was also shocked by this feature, but it is true that the bathroom can get moldy easily so it is helpful with that. The air system in Japanese apartments and homes is different from US ones. We have an aircon and it is usually only in one part of the apartment. The air doesn’t reach in the bathroom so having good ventilation is difficult. Also, its not common to have a dryer because of space issues. So that is another reason why it is super helpful. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment :)
@@kimberdesu140 I live in Israel, and it's the same way here. I try to dry my clothes outdoors when it's warm, but I have to be really careful that they don't get sun bleached if I leave them out too long. I wish I had that dryer feature in the winter, when I hang my clothes to dry in the shower.

Those are all very great ideas. Thank your for sharing and thanks for watching! I’ll be sure to take your advice in the future
This is one of the nicest Japanese apartments I've seen😭😭 very lucky!
Thank you. I also couldn’t believe how lucky I was. I’m glad other people think so too :)
In terms of space savings, Americans can learn a lot from Japanese apartment design. Thank you for the cool tour! 😊
Yes. And maybe from the mindset as well. I think, as an American, you grow up thinking you need a lot of space even if it is unnecessary. Small living can be very satisfying 😊
@@kimberdesu140 are you still living in Japan
I am. I plan to for awhile :)
@@kimberdesu140 what's it like living in the most haunted country in all of Asia
I don’t like to walk alone at night 😂 it was the same in the US, but here I am more scared of ghosts
Comparatively, this place is bigger than the usual! I like the colour scheme too (tan tone). I definitely prefer doors separating spaces too.
It is truly so nice. I am happy I was able to make a life for myself, and so many others can too 😁
It’s cute but no living room that I would have to get used to. I love how you made it cozy with hooks it does not look cluttered at all.
At first it was weird, but eventually I did get used to it. Takes time :) Thanks for watching!
I didn’t even know it, but it’s what I needed today ❤️ I’m happy the algorithm brought you my way 😂
Even I was unsure if I would be able to live in such a small space, but like you said, I am young and adventurous and it has helped me quite a bit 😃 It has been a very great experience. One I will treasure for the rest of my life :) thanks for watching and commenting!
Your apartment is so nice. I've been watching some japanese apartment tours and yours is really nice.
Thank you. I’m also in awe of how nice my apartment is. Thanks for watching :)
@@kimberdesu140 Can you get those large net things with magnets on them to attach to the doors when they are open.
As a former JET I likely wouldn't have had your restraint in response to the comment that your apartment is homely.
@@elkojoe6209 Still makes it nice though regardless of how her home is. Or do you just like taking digs at other people's opinions.
Probably more storage under table area. I’d get a big sofa pillow to sit on. Also get a carpet pad and an area rug to go over it!
I love your apartment. It shows how creative the Japanese are in optimizing space. I love the wash/shower room and yes separate toilet area is wonderful. Thank you for showing us your beautiful apartment.
Thank you for watching and leaving such a lovely comment ❤️
I love it! I love small spaces, less to clean & less to pay for electric! Yay 👍✌️
See, there are some people who get it 😁 I agree wholeheartedly
I really like it. It's really cosy. I think i would enjoy living there. I really love plants and flowers so i could see myself filling the patio area with them. Maybe a bird feeder too.
Thank you. I really enjoyed watching.
Thank you. So glad you enjoyed it. I really loved this apartment :) And thank you for watching!
Beautifully arranged. The only thing that would drive me crazy would be the thin walls and hearing my neighbors or them hearing me. But for $400/month you can't go wrong!
Right, it really is hard to complain when the price is so amazing :)
Ps sorry so talky but use high blocking ear plugs. It helps. Misophonia a sufferer too.🥺
Hi, maybe someone already wrote this, but just in case, the buttons you didn't knew about in the toilet are for pressure and movement, the two closest to where you seat are mae and ushiro ( front and back ) to move the nozzle to where to want it, and the other two buttons up are for the water pressure yowai and tsuyoi ( weak n strong ) hope it helps, for me I find that the position is always quite back, so in my toilets we had set them a bit to the front, it's quite useful 😊
Thank you for your help with this 😄and thank you for watching 😊
Very cute apartment, and it's great that it's so functional. It reminds me of my first apartment when I lived in San Francisco years ago. Hope you have a great time in Japan!
I like that it’s functional too. I feel like when it is such a small apartment it has to be functional. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
I don’t know if you use natural air to help cool your home in high temps, but that the doors slide both ways means that you can have them open on either end to allow for in/out air flow. It will flow more effectively than having one door all the way open.
Oh wow I didn’t know that. Thanks for sharing
My older brother was on the Jet program in the mid 1990's. He still lives and works in Japan.
You must be a good teacher because you did a revision of the apartment tour towards the end.
LMAO 😂 Good observation. I hope that is true. I try where I can 💁♀️✨

It's amazing how smartly designed are the japanese apartments!
That is a good idea. It helps to have more counter space in the kitchen. Thank you for watching :)
I think the basin above the toilet cistern is brilliant. When I lived in Scotland our water came from a spring in the hillside and in the summer it was scarce. Reusing water would have been ideal.
I hope they become more common in that part of Scotland. It would be very useful. In general they could make a difference around the world I think :)
I like how you made it pretty with the greenery and flowers. I would move the bed to the opposite wall so I could access the storage without tripping on the bed though and would have a solid wall behind the bedhead.
Thank you, and that would also be a nice way to put the bed :)
This is fascinating and very cool! I live tiny, in 180 sq ft, so I really appreciate how every inch is functional. I love how appreciative you are for what you have. Your home is wonderful. Thanks for the tour.

There was so much storage. Very pleased with this space as well :) Thanks for watching
That little patio space can be use as a little garden area))))

That's a lovely apartment! Very clever layout and storage solutions, nice color scheme and I would put a lot of plants in that balcony. The kitchen is a little too small for my taste, but still pretty functional compared to some microapartment kitchens out there.
I agree, and i’m glad you mentioned the color scheme. I also really liked it. It felt bright and cozy :)
This is very nice and cozy, especially that your sleeping room is divided from the kitchen. I wish I had this too. 😅
Yes, I really like the separation from the kitchen too. Especially having a door is nice. It helps to keep all the kitchen and bathroom smells out 😂

Thank you for showing me your home. It's such a small space but makes me realise that I have far too much unnecessary stuff
I had that same realization. Even when I would go shopping I would want things but then think about whether i really needed it. Small living can be great for personal growth I think, and your wallet 😂 Thanks for watching
the patio door probably has the option to slide either way in case you put furniture on one side that might obstruct that opening :)
That is good reasoning. I could definitely see that 👍

@@kimberdesu140 Do neighbours ever complain about noise? I'm worried about whether playing music would be an issue

I Love that net contraption for the sink drain. Do we have those in the US!?!! We should. Way better than the little strainers we use.
I don’t think we do, but definitely should 😄
Most places don't have sink garbage disposals. They are actually really bad for your pipes, even though they are common in some parts of the US.
Invest in a back jack for sitting on your floor. They are wonderful. I use mine when I go camping and canoeing.
@@kimberdesu140 At cleaning time, clean with vinegar or spray vinegar after cleaning, and that mold will never grow.

The furniture was already in the apartment when I moved in.
The duel sliding door may be for a larger bed to open door at other end.
That would make a lot of sense. It could definitely be useful for that. Thanks for sharing.

Oh no! Stay safe out there 😳
My sister in law has a modern apartment in Japan.

Yes, I can do a video on this. For now I will say that the school did give us materials. Elementary followed those materials closely. In my situation at my school as a JHS teacher we had textbooks but everything we created was really up to the JTE most of the time. I’ll try and make more detailed video about this in the future. In sink, garbage disposal units have been illegal in the UK for a few years because they contaminate the water table .
Interesting, i didn’t know that. But it makes a lot of sense. I like the disposal in japan more than in the US :)
Hey sweetie, in Europe the sinks do not have a disposel system either! Although there may be mainly rich or foreign people who have had this installed. I would love such a disposal but my husband is against it, and it's expensive.
