      ear candles are great. they worked really well and it's a property of physices of heat rising and carrying "debree" with it. your fireplace gets hot, boils sap and heat rises carrying smoke up and out.
      it's the same principal of the ear candle, takes a minute or so to warm the inside of the ear and establish the venting property. the candle must be, MUST BE made properly and i'm not going to go into it as its been awhile and people should do their own research and make up their own mind.
      it feels wonderful...warm and cozy. the proper mix of fabric and wax burns the fabric to a fine almost no ash and just blows away. we never had a problem but

    hah, I remember ear candling... My cousin, who regularly visits psychics and is eager to hop on any new age trend, was touting the virtues of it and convinced my mom to hold an "ear candling party" My cousin didn't appreciate when I demonstrated that the same "gunk" appeared even when not inserted into an ear. She didn't speak to me for several years after that, which I was surprisingly ok with.

    • @maeve_a
      @maeve_a 3 роки тому +1

      I want to see that. It's exactly what I think of ear candling, that the gunk could be produced without actually putting it in an ear, but that didn't happen with my one attempt. So my sister used ear candles for just cleaning her ears periodically. You can buy a pack of 2 from Walmart...and you are supposed to cut off the flame every inch. I was very skeptical and afraid! But after getting a bunch of random ear aches, thought it might help. (It semi did, but I still get them sometimes so probably not related) I was certain that the wax was from the candle itself! And I think next time I buy them.... I'll experiment and see.
      She never claimed anything about it but cleaning ear wax out. So no butt future reading there!

      Well, yes...but also no. For example, there are a lot of plants with demonstrated medicinal effects which haven't made their way into "regular" medicine. To some extent, it's the "trying to drink from a firehose" effect. Doctors have so many pharmaceutical options available that there's small incentive to promote something for which the dose is hard to regulate and can't be bought at a local pharmacy. The flip side of that, of course, is that many people reject conventional medicine for something else "because it's natural" without understanding that "natural" isn't synonymous with "safe". The Toxic Reef Crab is so poisonous that natives historically used it for suicide. But, hey, it's all natural! Like...you know...cobra venom. If some extract of flora or fauna works as medicine, it's because it's doing what medicine does, ergo is potentially just as dangerous or worse. But there are nevertheless plants you can grow in your yard that have demonstrated efficacy as medicine. It's (in my opinion) always worth looking into things that are purported to be medicinal but you have to do it with a degree of skepticism and evaluate it by the scientific method.

    Well I seem to remember from uni that the worm experiment had some merit. Warning, long and boring explanation ahead. Firstly they were flatworms, not annelids (earthworms) which are very simple creatures with a bunch of biological quirks (such as being able to basically rearrange all their cells). They trained them to curl up when exposed to light (by exposing them to light then shocking them a bunch of times) then chopped the trained flatworms up and fed them to untrained worms. Those fed worms then would curl up significantly more often when exposed to light than non-cannibalistic worms. So they theorized there was some uptake of genetic material or an important molecule such as RNA that led to this across the digestive system. Of course flatworms have very simple digestive systems so large molecules could potentially cross the barrier. Not possible in humans at all so edible learning is still far off fantasy. Hope people enjoyed this and if anyone knows more than I do on this I'd love to hear it.

      Effective education comes through informative use of movies imho . Maybe we were to young to appreciate all of it but, we had an art teacher at 8th and 9th grade who "made us" watch "Mad max the road warrior", "Terminator" and for many reasons a large diversity of movies like "Pretty in pink", "Citizen Kane", "Rick Kirby",and "Do the right thing". Among many other movies that we as a class had to analyze at length and listen to the teachers long, and in depth monologue evaluations Etc, but those were popular classes indeed. "Hotel Rwanda" would probably had made her list, but this was before the Rwandan genocide.

    Have you ever looked at the core tenets of chiropractic?
    It's clear pseudoscience.
    That said unlike other pseudoscience it's not entirely ineffective. The difference is it's not more effective than other therapies and it poses more risk.
    For a doctor who takes the hippocratic oath, and is legally bound to do risk versus benefit assessments for any procedure, one should never recommend chiropractic medicine, in my opinion. There are better alternatives, such as deep tissue massage, stretching, rolfing, Phyaical therapy, etc. These may also be applied by a chiropractor, but they should just leave out the pseudoscience.

    • @maeve_a

      They may spend the rest of their time just making people's spines make impressive noises and selling ear candles, but whatever...as long as they're there when I need them, because MDs suck at dealing with hypermobile joints and it's insanely expensive to go to an ER just because I coughed hard and put a rib out.

    Oh man, I'd forgotten ear candling was a thing. A very gullible relative was briefly a "practitioner" and for some reason a bunch of us got together at a great-aunt's house for dinner and candling. The procedure was about as awkward and uncomfortable as you'd expect, but exponentially more awkward as a teenager lying on my great-aunt's bed with a candle in my ear and half my family standing around watching. So, uh, thanks for dredging up that memory?
    Based on a sample size of roughly 8 or 9 people, and compared to no control group whatsoever, I can report that ear candling did not even placebo-effect any of us to better health or hearing. And that bit of random anecdata is probably a better-designed clinical study than the proponents of ear candling ever performed.
