By the time I finished editing this I found myself feeling more sorry for Novak and do hope he can compete. He’s found himself used for political reasons. As Rafa said though, there is a very easy way he could've avoided all of this. Until then, won't someone please think about the water
This is nonsense. My husband and I are vaccinated. Our son has severe immunodeficiency, is unable to build inmunity to vaccines. Us and other people getting the vaccine does not protect him at all. It does not prevent of transmission. Why are we lauding a vaccine as if it protect others and shoving it down peoples throats? Why were we promised updated vaccines meanwhile the flu vaccine is updated better, more often and aggressively rolled out? I'm sick of hearing about it preventing severe disease while transmission is being ignored. I'm sick of people pretending their vaccination status protects the people I love. Lies like this are putting vulnerable people at risk. N95 and updated more effective vaccine now please.
Fun fact: The "positive ion" strain of quackery tends to include jewellery and bracelets containing uncomfortable amounts of dangerous radioactive materials, in particular one isotope of cobalt. You know, because the ions align your chakras and it counteracts the cancer or something.......
@@daviddavidson2357 Actually from what I've seen, both kinds exist. It's not like "positive ions" is a protected brand or anything. Some of them contain nothing at all. You're right, thorium was the common one, though.
@@mortenrl1946 It was always branded as negative ion. You're telling me that if I search for positive ion I can get a "massage pen" full of radioactive cobalt? I want one now. Already have the negative ion thorium one. It's usually a laugh handing it to friends and asking them what they think it's for. When you say it's full of radioactive thorium they usually freak the fuck out. The metal casing blocks most of the radiation and short term exposure is harmless. I still keep it in a labelled ziplock bag with both caution symbols printed off and tossed in with it and then inside a small labelled metal box at the opposite end of my house and the furthest away from any people for safety reasons, but having someone muse over what it is for a few minutes is always a laugh when you tell them it's full of thorium salts. The fact that it's sealed in metal and then inside a metal box means that the only real danger from it is gamma decay products and its gamma emissions are minimal, barely above background and an old radium dial (which you can get on plenty of antiques sites or even the most common online auction site (YT censor bit deletes all posts with the name of it in my posts so let's just call it "eshore"/"iBeach") would eclipse it in terms of gamma output. There is a large "do not open item" warning inside the ziplock as having a sealed source is one thing, having thoria everywhere is a mini Goiana cleanup effort. Unless I'm using it for a prank it's also marked with a sharpie (you can wipe that off with an alcohol swab) warning anyone to not open it as well as having the trefoil badly drawn on top. You'd need to be aiming for a Darwin award if you wanted to open it. If I have kids the box will be locked.
Love the work. My Serbian wife also confirms his wife is cray cray. The funny thing about athletes is that they aren't even in optimal health. Health isn't performance. They are good performers. Eating vast quantities of food, training intensely and pushing yourself to the limit isn't good for longevity or mobility later in life.
Yes, the argument against PED's on the basis that they are bad for the health of sportsmen is ludicrous. Sport is what's bad for the health of sportsmen.
@@KC9UDX They're saying that the practise in staying in top performance is bad for your health. Why is true, having a good amount of exercise keeps the muscles in working order, but straining the muscles too much actually weakens them in the long term. Also for things like football you have things like studs which while helping you grip the ground, also means that your foot doesn't turn with your body which wears on the cartilage in the knees.
As a former national-level athlete in my sport and a current scientist I happily admit to the concept of "superstition to 'control' stuff normally outside my control". Obviously I knew it was bogus, but the simple act of ritually eating garlic+oranges and drinking a herb-concoction (contained echinea puprurea extract so maybe not entirely useless at reducing symptoms of colds?) at least gave me the peace of mind to have done something to make me wake up OK next morning.
It's called "autoshaping" and it's one of the simplest operant conditioning models. Works on animals and in humans it's the basis of superstitious behavior and beliefs. In essence: 1) I do X 2) by chance, or simply, with no relation to event X, Y happens and it is pleasurable 3) after some trials (in humans, one is often enough), the subject will do X again, as if X caused Y (Unless you are aware of this happening or have learned a more logical way or Thinking, you'll asume X had something to do with Y).
I think I don't understand this concept. Garlic and orange are actually very healthy foods, obviously they don't cure cancer but they can definitely help be more healthy. Garlic has even proved effective against hypertension.
@@WOLIPOPGAMING for me the peace of mind he is talking about is mainly having done the best he could for his health, so it's useless being anxious. He said that he knew he was bogus, convincing yourself that you'll be ok to harness the power of placebo can be a great science driven behaviour. It's a paradox, if science tells you that if you believe something you'll be better, science is telling you that you should be unscientific when needed. And anyway supplements are effective, we don't have to go to the opposite extreme, there are evidence of effectiveness of certain supplements even against COVID.
7:24 This goes both ways, too. Far too many researchers at the university I used to work hard convinced themselves that, since they were educated medical doctors 30 years ago, even if they spent the last decades becoming experts in one niche field of medicine, they are now still experts in all other fields of medicine until proven otherwise, showing only slight remorse when being told off by the office whose job it is to know that stuff. It's so unbelievably common to think you're actually knowledgeable in something you've heard about once or twice, logical fallacies had to be defined to cover this unfortunate tendency. At least, I think scientists are slightly better at hiding their pride when being held responsible for the things they say, e.g. when talking to a journalist or making an official public statement.
Yeah I agree completely. I remember watching the news when there was a discussion about another lockdown and they interviewed a fucking GP. They took the ramblings of some random GP about COVID-19 strategy over an epidemiologist.
Hey Rohin, one topic that I would really love to see you cover is trust in doctors. In my home country Germany, a considerable number of doctors are also advertising homeopathy and other unproven (and in some cases obviously nonsensical) treatments. A few years ago, a group of lung doctors made headlines by wrongly claiming that air pollution wasn't actually a problem in German cities. Of course the overwhelming majority of doctors are advising everyone to get vaccinated against Covid, but there is a vocal minority of actual doctors helping to fuel the anti-vax crowd. How can I as a potential patient be certain that my doctor's advice is based on evidence, not quackery?
Unfortunately a medical degree does not inoculate people from stupidity. I don't think there's an easy answer to your last question, but it would be a good topic for a video, thanks
If doctors become complicit in mandatory vaccination without free and informed consent they are discrediting their reputation and the reputation of science. If they cannot uphold their own sacred principles, they don't deserve to be trusted or believed by anyone on anything. It is like a self harming disorder.
@@jamescaley9942 I'd like to know about these sacred principles. Is this something you get with your medical degree? Your license? Is it inherent: you could only get into medical school if you have them or only pass medical school or get licensed if you have these sacred principles? Who determines their existence? Perhaps the doctor could do a video about this.
@@jamescaley9942 And what principles would those be? And how would administering mandatory vaccination doses be in violation of them? The principle of not providing life-saving and changing medicines and treatments? Giving people proven and effective treatments? Fucking quack.
You can always ask your doctor to point you to the clinical trials or studies they base their advice on, or maybe look for studies on it yourself. Also, you can go to other doctors and get another opinion.
Rohin you are the coolest uncle I never had. You are my role model when it comes to thinking about almost everything in life. Honest, analytical and very insightful, let alone your sharp wit and how well you articulate yourself

Seeing my medical colleagues get incredibly superstitious on call is the most hilarious thing to me. Not eating certain foods, not taking certain lifts, bathing in certain scents, not commenting on how quiet the night has been... and the worst part, them getting genuinely upset when I try to mess with them. Just like athletes would do anything to get a competitive edge, it seems that my poor colleagues would do anything to have a quiet call lol
Well of course! A quiet shift means less potential suffering from all parties involved. It's ultimately just a psychological prank our brains play on us though. A tangent of our pattern seeking programming connecting dots that aren't actually connected. Walking under a ladder is genuinely an unsafe behavior, not actually "unlucky". And if you drop and break a mirror, you're probably predisposed to other clumsy behaviors and will find plenty of evidence convincing you of your "bad luck". A lot of superstitions seem to have been started for understandable reasons, but were ultimately wrongly attributed to unrelated events.
YEs, I love to loudly comment, "Gee it's really QUIET isn't it !!!". The reaction is priceless, as if I really have that much power over the Universe. Believe me, if I really did control the Universe in that way, I would use it to win the bloody Lotto, not rain shit upon my head.
I keep telling people! Wellness is the pseudoscience that actually infests the people who should medically know better! It gets around the loop hole by focusing on minor benefits that might appear in studies rather than just pretending they don't exist. As a disabled person it's extremely frustrating. When I'm told to "have yoga" for my TBI issues it feels like I'm being talked down to. Instead of listening to the drug injury I acquired from a prescription and trying to understand that drug better, I'm told to do shit like Yoga! Like that's going to help much!
Maybe they sniffed out the parabens, and artificial colours with documented dangerous interactions in the scents. Also not eating certain foods seems imminently logical considering a majority of food is only recently created, processed or made 20 times sweeter and available year round in the past hundreds of years. Heck if I trust any food when even cows eat corn, antibiotics and have higher omega6 to 3 ratio.
It's always a treat to see another video from you, Rohin. The way you articulate yourself and the dry humor is honestly a lot of fun to listen to. On top of that your insights into this wellness trend among celebs was interesting to think about!
As a yoga-loving vegan, I found your take of the connection between wellness and and vaccine hesitancy interesting. It seems to me like a big problem these days is that people are looking for evidence to back up what they’ve already decided to believe instead of forming an informed opinion based on evidence.
What if you decide against something and everyone keeps bugging you endlessly? Like your friend constantly insisting you watch a TV show that's "soooo good". Initially you have no reason to not watch it, but your own annoyance at being bothered about it leads to the construction and enforcing of reasons why you won't?
Its simply a fact that if the vaccine doesnt reduce transmission but merely severity of symptoms then it does not affect the vulnerable if someone fit and healthy doesnt have the vaccine. I've had covid three times and have never had any severe symptoms and have probably got a better immunity and antibodies than some people that have the vaccine. Now what is the point in me personally being vaccinated? Will it prevent me spreading it to someone vulnerable. NO. Will it affect how that vulnerable person is affected by the virus. NO. So they only people that need to get the vaccine are the vulnerable and thats a personal choice. It's like forcing someone else to wear armbands in a swimming pool just because someone else cant swim! Wear them yourself! Happy days!
@Donald Darko but the vaccines reduce the spread of the virus because you are less likely to get the virus in the first place. And you as a person who had covid 3 times are also not really a good representation of the average anti vax guy.

@Vlasko60 jumping out of an airplane without a parachute leads to death. The phrase could be interpreted in two ways, like a double entendre. That's the basis of many jokes. If someone only notices only one of the possible interpretations then they don't get the joke.
@Vlasko60 obviously it didn't explicitly state he jumped without a chute; that's why there are two ways to interpret the words and otherwise it wouldn't be a joke at all! Medical doctor from Serbia here with experience working with COVID patients. My two cents. It's important to note that Serbia has suffered catastrophically during this pandemic. Who hasn't though? But hear me out. Due to inept initial response of our government (which is, it should be added, quite authoritarian and nationalistic), which had brushed away this illness as "the funniest virus", a large percentage of people simply paid no heed to this from the start. Combined with illogical prevention measures, non-existent vaccination campaign, constant flip-flopping of our politicians and chief doctors (I hardly consider them as doctors anymore) on the public health issue and manipulation of statistics (officially, around 12,000 people died - but there is research by independent journalists which points out that the likely number is three times that), and you get a complete catastrophe where only half the population is vaccinated, health system (which was barely working even prior to this) has fallen apart and trust in science and medicine is at its all time low (to be fair though, those last two points are issues way older than this pandemic). And then you add Djokovic into the mix. His vocal skepticism and rejection of modern Western medicine has been incredibly harmful to our efforts in sustaining the spread of COVID, chiefly through rejection of the vaccine as something harmful, unnatural and unnecessary. You must understand that the support this man has among a large number of Serbs is incredible. The dude is almost a messianic figure. To be clear, Djokovic is just the cherry on top of a societal, medical, political and dare-I-say moral cataclysm which has befallen this country (as if we didn't have enough of those before). The chief blame is with our top political figures (some of which are, as Rohin mentioned, rubbing their shoulders with Novak) and various "doctors" and charlatans who are behind the efforts to battle this disease, while really being there only for their personal profit and political influence. Djokovic as such is certainly a symptom of a wider societal problem in Serbia, but also of the world's problems in general, and this video illustrates that quite well. But just remember that this is a man who has actively supported the harmful ideas which have led to death of more than tens of thousands of his countrymen, not to mention the horrible death toll worldwide. He deserves no sympathy.
What are you talking about? I've never met a person that told me that it didnt take vaccine bcs of Novak promoted this. Matter a fact I've never heard that Novak actively telling people not to vaccinate. He just didnt vaccinate and thats his right. Truth is that covid vaccines are not fully tested and from that standpoint I can understand people that skiped this vaccine.
Hey Doc, fellow Serbian here. After reading this, I felt something clicked inside big time. First of all, at the time of the Covid pandemic I was living in Asia, and had very close observation to how the governments and general public of various Asian countries dealt with the first wave. When talking to my friends, pointing to the potential severity of the situation (knowing what happened in Hong Kong back in 2008 with SARS) I kept getting this weird dismissive attitude, relativisation. I was in a kind of disbelief myself that it could go this far. So, with it came the unintentional medical and scientific angle of discussion. The more we all learned about it, the more we kinda naturally fell away from the scientific consensus. But to then discover that there were such extreme opinions based in what Rohin calls as quackery, pseudoscience and straight denial of proven medical science, just made me speechless. What you wrote here made me remember those recent times and that state of mind as well as that there must a clear stance on what you represent and which principals you follow. Now, I can't stand in defense of what Novak is preaching and represents no matter how much respect I have for the guy sport wise. I can't dissmis him either, he is doing some things right regarding nutrition and physical conditioning, but man I just can't tolerate this delusional bullshit him and his wife are blabbering about. It's so much harm done to the efforts of people that were fighting the real fight. There is so much nuance about the whole issue, but this made me clear things up a bit. Thank you for your hard work during the toughest times.
Read _Thinking, Fast and Slow_ by Daniel Kahneman for a fascinating explanation of why critical thinking doesn't come naturally and is a skill that must be developed and continually practiced. He also explains why the "rational person" of classical economic theory doesn't really exist.

I used to be a pro sportsman. I can tell you that sportsmen are incredibly superstitious.....lucky socks, lucky routines.....blah blah. This is part of the refusal to see success or failure as marginal outcomes determined by tiny margins, and often outside of the sportsman's control. This highly superstitious nature leads to believing any old guff.......as Djokovic demonstrates clearly. The other thing which characterises sporstmen is a very high level of self-confidence. Sport acts like natural selection on those who don't have it, and so the successful have it in spades. This leads to them never accepting they are wrong.........as Djokovic demonstrates clearly. You can show Djokovic the science until the cows come home, but the arrogance of sportsmen, and this one in particular, is never going to let him accept that he's wrong.
Djokovic actually IS following the science. He is young, extremely healthy, and in peak physical condition. Covid is not a threat to him. Indeed, he has already had Covid. So why exactly would he subject himself to the risks of the vaccine? There is simply no scientific argument which would compel him to do it. The ONLY argument is because Australia demands it, but injecting substances in to your body because politicians in a foreign country demand it is hardly sound science, now is it?

Thanks for making this video. It's an important issue to talk about and I'm glad you're able to simultaneously hold and express these two beliefs - first Government and medical responses may be (and sometimes are) imperfect and second that there are far more pernicious influences, people lying whether or not they are aware of it and crippling the public trust in one of our best tools to fight SARS-CoV-2. I live in Australia and there's plenty of issues with how the government (state and federal) has handled the pandemic and there are some very disappointing legal mechanisms they've used to punish Djokovic (you can agree with the outcome but dislike the last minute cancellation and inconsistency by the Government). But my sympathy for Djokovic ends at the point where he pushes or indirectly promotes vaccine scepticism. Many "health gurus" are suffering from ED too. Dieticians call them out often when they present their disordered views on food or diets to others as a natural (and only) way of healthy living. Buying rare food for your country and expensive supplements doesn't seem so natural to me.
Actually, they do in a way. It's the circadian rhythm. The human body has a sort of internal clock, and when we do travel across time zones, we get jetlagged, because the circadian rhythm needs to adjust. As for daylight savings, that also affects the circadian rhythm. It's why it's often reported that a lot of people fall ill whenever the clocks go forward - the body hates losing an hour of sleep. The concept that the various internal organs repair themselves at certain times of the day has a certain basis in truth. But that's about it. The thing with traditional Chinese medicine is that it has a bit of a basis in truth... It's actually why in Japan and China, traditional medicine is actually something medical doctors are trained in. You end up with a doctor who will prescribe medication... and traditional herbal teas and exercises. The logic being that the two are meant to work hand in hand. Yet... you don't get people saying that the medical system in East Asia is full of quacks.
@@vaska00762 There are people saying that and it is full of quacks. Asia gets passes all the time for stuff like xenophobia and other more immediate horrors, you know this. People just don't say it as often as they should either because of vapid cries of culture or otherwise being in certain Asian countries' pockets.
@@gausscone quacks are everywhere, yes. My point was more that at least in Asia, non quacks will make use of everything available to them. Someone recovering from major surgery may, for example, also receive acupuncture treatment which help speed up recovery and help with rehabilitation. The acupuncture ends up promoting blood flow and help alleviate pain. Aromatherapy is being used in things like palliative care, as the smells stimulate blood flow in the amygdala, reducing the need for strong painkillers or sedatives. Indeed, a lot of medical research has been conducted in Asia on mice and humans which do indicate that, not only do many traditional methods have genuine physiological effects on the body, but also that when combined with modern medicine, the patient outcomes are actually better. Plus, we're all forgetting that there's still the psychosomatic aspect to everything. It's why placebo control groups are always present in drug trials. If you think something is going to make you better, there's a possibility that the brain will make the individual feel better. Quacks differ from what I've described, because they reject modern medical science instead of integrating it into pre-existing knowledge. A quack would probably say that a macrobiotic diet will cure cancer. A properly trained East Asian oncologist will go through the procedures of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, but still also give the patient traditional medicine or treatments to help with the side effects of chemo or radiotherapy and assist with the healing and rehabilitation following surgery. If the patient gets the right treatment and feels better, and adverse effects are mitigated, then what's the matter?

While he does act as a sort of ambassador and promotor of Serbia, that alone is no reason to call him nationalistic. He is always friendly to people from neighbouring countries, congratulating and even supporting their national teams. Anybody mildly aware of Balkan history can only applaud his behaviour in that regard.
He spearheaded friendly relations even with regional neighbours with whom there was a civil war, he held a goodwill tournament in Croatia, his coach is Goran Ivanisevic (a Croatian); and he has huge support from Bosnia as well, just check out Novak visiting the Bosnian Pyramids in Visoko..
@J J Putting aside: "had a photo with ..." or "talked to ..." can you please quote him saying something questionable. To me it seems he truly believes in friendship and equality across nations.
7:26 "People who have dedicated their entire lives to being phenomenally good at hitting a ball don't necessarily have knowledge in areas outside of ... hitting a ball, and we probably shouldn't listen to them." Careful now, Socrates was forced to drink Hemlock for saying exactly that.
Yes .. it’s really amazing. Everything a professional athlete does is completely based on science. When to practice, how to practice, how much to practice, When to drink water, how much to drink, loaded with __., drugs to heal faster, heal with less pain, when to use heat for injury, when to use ice baths .. how long to do each, steroids or anabolics for this, others for that, (ask Lance Armstrong) …. But when it comes to COVID… we regress back to witch doctors and charlatans … It shows .. one can be supremely intelligent and gifted in one athletic talent .. and still be dumb as a stump …

You wouldn't ask a welder for advice on the best way to treat blackspot on roses so why would you trust the health advice of a tennis player over a medical professional? People make really weird leaps in logic at times.
The link between Wellness culture and anti vaxx sentiment is so fascinating. It's kind of incredible how little we can see distinct social phenomena emerging until it does, even if it was obvious the whole time.
As a Serbian I just want to point out that Novak never wanted to become a poster child for the anti-vaxers Austalian goverment told him he was good to go (otherwise he wouldn't have been able to even get on a plane) and when he showed up, the rules have suddenly changed. This affected other non-vaccinated players, but some of them were allowed to stay. Which his defense obviously pointed out. The issue became an actual issue only when Australian public gained notice, so they decided he is gonna be an example. They held out the decision until the last moment.. I also wanna point out that he donated a massive amount of money during the pandemic to Serbian hospitals and vaccine research&prevention
This is one of the slickest applications of argumentum ad absurdum, false equivalency, straw man, and reductio ad absurdum I've come across in some time. Well done.

I am sceptical about this whole saga. The dude probably has team of 10 doctors that are paid millions of dollars a year to keep him in optimal form. I am quite sure he did not make this decision based on some TikTok video or twitter post. His body is his tool and athletes are surrounded by the best experts in medicine, nutrition, PT, fitness etc... I find it hard to believe they had nothing to do with this decision.
Djokovic has literally come out and said himself that he believes an "expert" that gluten can harm you just by holding it against your stomach, or that dirty water can be purified using positive emotions. How can you be skeptical that Djokovic follows these quacks and pseudo science when the man himself has repeatedly said in public that this is what he believes? Mind boggling!

His tournament in 2020. was fully endorsed by medical experts in Serbia, where far from the height of pandemic it was time with two weeks in a row of zero or close to zero cases. There were fudbal, basketball matches at the same time, concerts etc. He is definitely into woo woo but that tournament was not as crazy as it looked from the outside. Or if it is crazy it's craziness that was supported by the state and by the experts in Serbia (such as there are). As for being nationalistic, he might say a "patriotic" thing here and there, which wouldn't even raise an eyebrow in say Britain, but Balkans being Balkans you might get an impression that he's particularly nationalistic, which he is not, and certainly not chauvinistic (his mother is Croatian, his father is Serbian he, never said anything even slightly bad against any group of people whatsoever)
@@VicvicW idk, I'm just a software engineer, all I'm saying Djokovic organized a tournament when health officials said it's was ok, and 100% of proceeds were for charity purposes so I think in that specific case the hate he got was misplaced and colored by the pandemic situation in the west not actual facts on the ground in Serbia

Why wouldn’t an unbiased and honorable professional doctor promote natural immunity over a vaccine when said person already has natural immunity? It seems that I am not much of a Djoković follower. But I think you are misinformed by your friend about Novak being a nationalist. For example, on one tournament judge told him he is Croat, and apologized later on but at some point Đoković told him no problem, that is similar. We Serbs had a long history of conflict with Croats. During floods in 2014 he helped financially and morally all the countries in Western Balkans. I don't know what he thinks in private, but in public he has shown no nationalism against neighboring countries as far as I know. I don't see why it is relevant or wrong that Novak is close to Orthodox Church ... Being close to the political regime is bad for us in Serbia, but still not relevant to your video. After all, he can't fight against everybody, like ATP. Beside that I like the tone of your videos, and this one also.
I know it's hard for most to understand but people who are on Novak's side do not necessarily share his opinions on the vaccine. People flock to his side for multiple different reasons.

I like and agree with all of the stuff in the video! But because I have a bit of a contrarian streak, here is a perhaps unpopular take: there is also a class of influencers and pundits who beat people over the head with science. Rohin, I feel like you’ve covered this in the past, even related to COVID. Some people, myself included, turn to a general version of “wellness” because of bad experiences with treatments that are backed by science. My experience taking antidepressants was abysmal, and there were not a lot of clinicians who cared. I rely much more reliably on yoga and meditation - which I definitely would NOT use to cure a viral illness, but do use to “cure” my anxiety and depression. Am I a QAnon nut? There are plenty of pundits that think so, and I don’t think those people are actually helpful. Less harmful overall than the actual antivax crowd, but they still remind me of the terror and indifference I felt when I was pretty much forced onto an antidepressant when no one wanted to actually help me in crisis. :(
One thing you didn't mention is that sometimes some of the wellness mumbo jumbo turns out to be correct. I started listening to your interview video, where medical marijuana was mentioned. I remember poopooing all the Facebook conspiracy theory posts about the wonders of medical marijuana and how it's being suppressed - only to find out a few years later that most of them were true. In fairness to people who believe all the new age / wellness stuff, it can be very hard to separate fact from fiction, without being an expert in every aspect of science and medicine.
Concise and accurate IMHO. I'm sure Rohin is a nice reasonable individual. Just as many nice reasonable individuals thought Tony Blair was a genuine good bloke back in the day and even some who thought Hilary was someone who would be safe and competent as POTUS.
there's a lot of pseudoscience medicine quackery here in Indonesia. and a lot of the believer is actually people desperate for medical treatment. because of high medical intervention cost compared to their income or chronically ill patient that desperate enough to be cured. heck even the government funded medical insurance deemed to high for them although relatively cheap compared to the other private insurance. The problem is most of them are in middle to low income household, I'm not blaming them for not opt in into the government funded med insurance, because they barely scraping the barrel for feeding themself. and also quackery practice that "popular" or have some wo wo magic to heal someone is more convincing rather than professional doctor advice and even create a disbelief for proper medical intervention. Some influencers even promote those wo wo wellness stuff as a complete alternative for medication. and most of them that follows end up paying more in those "alternate medicine" rather than spending those money on the insurance and receive little to no benefit other than placebo.
I giggle, but at least that's not really causing problems for other people. A generic "it feels good" or "I'm relaxed afterward" is fine. Not gunna gripe with someone's harmless self-care routine. Overblowing it with "BUT IT CURES MY MUSCLES" yeah that's ridiculous. Charging through the nose promising cures, also problematic. Charging for a relaxing service with that as the promise, sure.
@@questgivercyradis8462 The issue with something like cupping is the opportunity cost. For example a poorer individual may choose to spend their money on cupping because they've heard of it from their favourite celebrity/influencer rather than spending their money on a conventional medicine, which in some cases will give a significantly worse outcome. I agree it's not as bad as other things of course, but just wanted to mention that a downside does exist. I used to think the same.
@@arghnews I've heard this type of argument a lot regarding many (imo) harmless superstitions, and I can't help but wonder whether it comes from a dispassionate analysis of the situation or from deciding first that there must be some harm and then setting out to find one. After all, you can say the same about just about anything, because just about anything costs time, money, or both, and few people have an excess of both. "The issue" with reading a novel is that it takes time that could be used to prepare oneself to succeed in life. Time spent on youtube could be better spent doing the same, or perhaps playing some sports to better one's overall health. So really cupping leads to bad health outcome in poor people like you describe in a similar manner to how reading a novel set oneself up for future failure and watching youtube leads to heart problems. I'm of the opinion that all of these 3 causations are absurd.
The difference is that no one is watching a UA-cam video or reading a novel *in place of having proven medical therapy*, whereas they might do this with cupping, either delaying useful treatment or wasting their money. Important to differentiate between people treating it as a funky massage because it feels nice vs those who believe it has a deeper health benefit
@@arghnews Totally agree that there are downsides, especially on the economic side and the duped-into-believing-it-is-medicine side. It's fascinating, the reactions to Australia's pandemic response. I don't know anyone who doesn't agree that it is chaotic, but here in New Zealand, the general reaction is that it doesn't go far ENOUGH. They're basically doing nearly our level of response, with nearly the rest of the world's level of disaster. If they wanted something like we have (approx 10-15 cases per million of population a day, 10 deaths total per million of population since the start, and no omicron except at the border), along with plenty of personal freedom for the vaccinated (No cap on indoor gatherings, all hospo open, no curfews or travel restrictions within the borders of the country, just vaccine passes, scanning QR codes and masking on public transport and indoors), then they actually had to push a little harder, lock down sooner, and enforce harder borders, and maintain restrictions a little longer. Because they didn't, they didn't get the results they could have, and their response looks disproportionate and rediculous, because they get the worst of both worlds, long harsh lockdowns that recur, because they weren't quite harsh or long enough to squash it.
@@amillionlittledingdongs6768 Five million healthy, free, New Zealanders disagree with you. They can disagree with yout because they're not dead. From our perspective the rest of the world, overwhelming healthcare, burning out proffessionals, rolling lockdowns and restrictions, mounting varients, and more dead people worldwide than our entire population, appears bananas and criminally neglegent. We've had some of the most freedom, and least days with restrictions, because we reacted hard and early, and continue to do so when there are changes. You can think what you like of my head, but the numbers don't lie, our response has been one of the most effective, least economically damaging, in the world. Seems perfectly sane to me
The reason why Australia's response has been all over the place is that most of the states were in favor of preventing spread, while the federal government are a bunch of ghouls who have no care whatsoever for the lives of the people who would die, and kept pushing to open things up. The only state that toed the Morrison government's line on things was NSW and they're the state where covid ended up completely breaking containment and infecting the rest of the country. Here in SA we were living perfectly fine until they decided to open borders back up right before christmas as omicron was kicking off because the federal government told them to. The fact that there's absolute bloody morons trying to compare public health measures to the holocaust is absolutely baffling and completely destroys any faith in humanity we had left.
My business proposal: sell an idea that makes you think you're healthier/stronger. put it in a bottle with a harmless substance, sell it at a high enough price so they believe it and placebo will do the rest. But priced low enough to outcompete other quackeries that do actual damage.
I'm Australian, and living in Melbourne. We have had six "lockdowns" since the beginning of the pandemic in Melbourne for various lengths of time. I have to say, I'm a little sick of people from other countries taking issue with how Australia has handled Covid. Invariably, these people are living in countries that have lost hundreds of thousands to Covid, whereas Australia has lost a few thousand. Seems like our "extreme way of dealing with Covid" has been pretty successful in comparison to ANY country with an equivalent sized population or larger. You may have noticed I use quotation marks around the word lockdowns, that's because there was no lockdown. There were restrictions on how far you could travel from home, how many visitors you could have at your home, and a requirement to work from home, if possible. You were permitted to have up to 2 hours a day outside for exercise, you could leave the house for shopping, work, if you couldn't work from home, to attend a doctor or any medical appointment, to have a prescription filled. Hardly a lockdown, that word conjures up images of people confined to their home, which was not the case. And the reason we had so many lockdowns was because we didn't have enough vaccine because our brilliant federal government didn't secure enough to double vaccinate everybody. They initially only secured five million doses for a population of 25 million. The state governments imposed restrictions until we were able to secure enough vaccine and 80% of the adult population was vaccinated. Pretty prudent, I'd suggest.
It was extreme. Doesn't mean it wasn't a good call- that's probably a bit up for debate once you take into account the considerable human toll of all those millions of people restricted from accessing normal means of maintaining their psychosocial health etc. It's extreme to make it illegal to have a picnic. Might have been right, but still extreme.
@@OrWhatWeHave I think the whole psychological toll thing is being overplayed, too. As an example, much has been made of the increase in suicides, and it's been put down to Covid restrictions. That seems very strange to me. The reason being that the people making that claim often say that there are a lot of deaths being attributed to Covid that are not really Covid deaths, and that many of those people had pre-existing conditions. So not all deaths are Covid deaths, but the rise in suicides is because of Covid lockdowns. It's strange how people with an agenda manipulate the truth to justify their own argument. For all we know, some of those people may have been suicidal for years, and yet any rise is attributed to lockdowns, without any data to back it up. It's like the idiots who maintain that Covid and the restrictions is being done for government control. Absolute bullshit. Allow me to poke holes in that theory. First off, do these clowns really believe that ALL the governments of the world, be they American, Latin American, European, Russian, Asian, or Pacific Islander, at federal or state level, have all agreed to implement a plan to impose restrictions on their citizens so that they can "control" them. As you'd know, there is ZERO chance of that many governments agreeing on anything, especially when it's going to cost them money. And for what gain? I can't see any pros to that plan, but I can see lots of cons. For example, loss of tax revenue from travel, tourism, public transport, manufacturing, hospitality, the movie industry, music and entertainment industries, accommodation industry, fuel tax etc.etc. Add to that the extra social security costs, no government is going to agree to that, let alone all of them. All lies, propagated by idiots with no other agenda other than to try to project themselves as "one of the people in the know"
Multiple Choice Questions: 1) Humanity is losing its collective mind 2) Anti-social media has made us more aware that humanity is losing its collective mind 3) Both of the above 4) None of the above In keeping with the modern ethos of "every opinion counts", marks will not be deducted for incorrect answers.

ZDoggMD on UA-cam did a good response to McCullough. I don’t find his claims about therapies have any credible evidence at all, but he raises plenty of good points about the pandemic in general and policies that have been harmful. However, the majority of what he said on Joe Rogan was demonstrably false. Malone is a harder one. I’ve also watched his interview and found myself much less able to understand whether what he was saying was correct. Again, many sensible and good points.

Hey Rohin,
one topic that I would really love to see you cover is trust in doctors.

I, on the other hand, just love sprinkling in the quiet word into every conversation possible
Waiting for the cardiologist to do a series on myocarditis.
There’s plenty of cardiologists on UA-cam who explain what myocarditis is, have a search there’s some great information about how it all works
Trying to explain that sometimes their lived experience is not how the world works, or the world that used to exist is next to impossible

Thank you all for your comments, it’s really useful hearing from Serbs with more informed views on his actions and impact at home
And, Milo's, I'd be wary of heart issues especially as a pro athlete, seeing as the actual virus won't harm you & will give you better antibodies

I mostly agree, but when it comes to Novak Djokovic being nationalistic, I wanted to scream FALSE.
Agreed!!
Agreed. Just another vax-cult channel.
Since when does nationalism mean putting other countries down? That's merely one way that nationalism can be practiced.

Yes .. it’s really amazing. Everything a professional athlete does is completely based on science. One thing you didn't mention is that sometimes some of the wellness mumbo jumbo turns out to be correct. I started listening to your interview video, where medical marijuana was mentioned. I remember poopooing all the Facebook conspiracy theory posts about the wonders of medical marijuana and how it's being suppressed - only to find out a few years later that most of them were true. there's a lot of pseudoscience medicine quackery here in Indonesia. and a lot of the believer is actually people desperate for medical treatment. because of high medical intervention cost compared to their income or chronically ill patient that desperate enough to be cured. heck even the government funded medical insurance deemed to high for them although relatively cheap compared to the other private insurance.
I weep intensely whenever I see strength athletes riddled with marks from cupping therapy.
I giggle, but at least that's not really causing problems for other people. A generic "it feels good" or "I'm relaxed afterward" is fine. Not gunna gripe with someone's harmless self-care routine. @@questgivercyradis8462 The issue with something like cupping is the opportunity cost.
Doesn’t go far enough? Maybe get your head checked

“ I don’t really care about those organs”
Hahahahaha classic cardiologist..

It is so nice to have a competent physician provide a sane analysis of these insane celebrity trends.
Would you be so kind as to give us your take on the Robert Malone and Peter McCullough information that is coming out? I understand it is a minefield and you probably don't want to touch this with a 10 foot pole, but us non-medical civilians are just flabbergasted by the constant barrage of people claiming to represent science and we don't know what to believe anymore.
100% agree op. Definitely would appreciate someone actually addressing the information they’ve brought forward. I’ll be honest I’ve gone down the rabbit hole on google scholar and can only find things that support these sceptics. The only arguments I’ve seen against them are basic smear articles attacking them as a person. I’d really appreciate someone addressing the message rather than killing the messenger. Fully jabbed 24y/o here but definitely need convincing before I have any more
ZDoggMD on UA-cam did a good response to McCullough. The more research I’ve done, the more I’ve connected some dots that he’s clearly lied (ie not just had a difference of opinion, but actively lied ) about some aspects, which makes me suspicious of other things he’s said, even if I’m comparatively less knowledgeable than him. But I agree with you, in these two cases especially, it’s really hard to figure out the truth
@@MedlifeCrisis Thank you SO MUCH for your thoughtful reply and for trying to illuminate us. You have a subscriber for life!
@@bengoodwin83 I found it quite easy to find a debunking of McCullough's statements on JRE that contained absolutely no personal attacks. It was at the top of the search results on his name.
@@Markle2k I've also found it incredibly found it incredibly easy to debunk cloth masks, the vaccine being non-sterilizing, the under reporting factor in VAERS, no definitive safety stopping point for the vaccine, the fact that the control for 12-17 year olds safety and efficacy had no severe events, but you don't see anybody in positions of authority admitting at all how they got those wrong.
I don’t care about what he believes. What I care about is people being forced to take medication and propaganda against those who stand up for their human rights.
Not taking the vaccine or wearing mask because you don’t want to isn’t going to be protected by your human rights because it affects everyone else around you. If you made a court case on that you’d probably lose
It boggles my mind that even well educated people buy into some of these conspiracy theories.
When do we get a compilation book of all your med-savvy witticisms and sassing and punnery?
Fantastic analysis with compassion and empathy. Thanks.
The illumination of legitimate facts in this video are only matched by the sheer volume of shade. Bravo.
I really want to hear the John McEnroe impersonation 😀
