New subscriber as of today. Former wood stove sales and certified installer here. You did a great job researching codes, but you made a rookie mistake. The black connector pipe from the stove to the ceiling is installed upside down. As you work your way up from the stovetop, the crimped end of each stick of pipe should be inside the section below it, starting at the stove's flue collar. That way, any creosote that condenses (and it inevitably will) drains safely down the inside of the pipe. It can be a fire hazard, but it's primarily a mess prevention issue - you don't want streaks of creosote running down the outside of the pipe.
Also very curious to know if we have a mutual friend. I live in Colorado, one of my closest friends here is a TPS grad now retired out of the flight test world. He's a generation ahead of you, but has many many ties to the Academy. Would be interesting to chat privately sometime if you're interested...

I got a little curious when you pointed that out and I don’t know why I would do that because I’ve installed pipes before. I just went back to the store and took two sections of that double wall stove pipe and realized I did install it correctly. There is an outer crimped area and an inner crimped area. Because it’s double walled, the inner crimped area is in fact situated such that the creosote will drip down inside the pipe and into the stove. It’s hard to see that from the outside and, other brands of pipe don’t look like this from the outside.
You’re probably right about the common friend. Send him the video and see if he recognizes me.

Since posting, I have watched a few more of your videos. Sounds like you're in an area where you only burn hard woods in the stove. If so, and your wood is dry, creosote concerns are minimal. It's a far bigger problem when burning any kind of pine...

May I please ask if as an off grid family you still invest in things like 401(k)s are IRAs for retirement purposes? My husband and I have been debating if our money would be better served to make us more self sufficient.

It seems the term “off-grid” means many things to many people. For us, it simply means being less reliant on the “grid” system to sustain ourselves. It is very difficult nowadays, if not impossible, for a U.S. family to be 100% self sustaining, but it’s always a fun challenge to see how close you can get! Regarding investments, we ABSOLUTELY support them. Years ago, when Sean was still active duty, we invested monthly into IRA’s, 529 funds for our kids’ future education, and we had multiple other savings and investment accounts. That said, we have reached a point in our lives that we aren’t currently adding to the investments, and in fact, we are cashing in some of those now to help fund our oldest son’s college and help with our construction. Once construction is completed though, we hope to begin actively investing once again! Additionally, Wise investing early on freed us up after retirement, and Sean has not had to work outside the home Since. Start today, and don’t wait. Just be sure to do your research and invest wisely!

Perhaps I am not seeing correctly but it appears the stainless triple stovepipe that penetrates the living space transfers all weight of the chimney to the stovetop?
I Really enjoyed the stove intro video, am in the market for a modern efficient wood cookstove.

No, the majority of weight is not on the stove top. If you recall in the video, he installed two extra supports between the joist, just under the roofing. These are critical to ensuring a solid attachment of that black cube ceiling box. The ceiling box has a collar attached inside that the triple pipe is attached to, thereby putting the vast majority of weight on those joists, via the box supporting them. Only a bit of weight from the black chimney pipes in between the stove and silver piece actually rest on the stove top.

Male ends are always supposed to point towards the stove outlet or “oppose” the flow of flue gasses.
This is asking for creosote dripping.

The male ends do, in fact, point towards the stove outlet. It’s a double walled pipe. As I’m installing, it looks like I’m putting it backwards. However, on the inside of that double wall pipe, the male end points down and receives the female end of the lower pipe. in short, if the creosote drips, it stays inside the pipe.

Are you using Class A Flu sections??

Loads of information here But you need to turn everything right side up so there won’t be any fires 🔥 or creosote dripping down outside of the pipe . Too many people make this mistake and you can guess the rest 🔥

Thanks for the comment. You’re not the only one that commented on the positioning of the pipes. However, they are correctly installed such that the male end of the internal pipe is pointing down. They are double walled pipes so as they’re being installed, you only see the exterior portion not the internal pipe. The internal pipe is the important one so creosote drips down. However, I try to keep very hot fires and it has exceptional Draft. I’ve noticed a very clean pipe in the past year and a half, very little build up at all.

u didnt show how u air sealed it and insulated it in attic, probably all done wrong...

There is no attic. That’s why we used a vaulted ceiling box. Very quick, easy, and it seals, insulates and fireproofs all in one-while meeting all fire codes. 😁
