  • In this episode, I finish up installing the Marving Custom Exhaust on my 1988 Super Magna. A very rare exhaust system for a rare bike. It took the better part of a day to do this job. No instructions are provided and the service manual doesn't cover the exhaust removal step by step. Even took a break for Proper English Tea with my wife Melly. Enjoy!

Yes, the tea is excellent. I don't think the Moonpies lasted as long as the tea has! LOL Very much appreciated.

Thanks for watching! I appreciate it. My wife and I just do these for fun. I'm not a professional mechanic or anything. I actually get a lot of advice from members of the bikers.boards.net forum. A bunch of great bikers from the UK (and internationally now). I probably wish I would have asked advice before getting stuck a couple of times! LOL. Cheers!

Good job Mike. Those little revelations like "If I had known this before I would have done it this way" are a great way to involve your audience people can relate to them and they are helpful. Good stuff buddy keep it going. Oh yeah, loved the tea scene, that did make me chuckle :) Sorted!

Thanks!! When Melly helps out with the project we always have more fun. Things tend to get a bit silly but it's all in good fun and we keep on track.

I paid 2000. It has some custom parts. Red. I found two places that will fix it but for $1500. 16 man hrs

I think that a fully restored (to mint condition) Super goes for around $5000 give or take, if the miles are around 10K or so. If yours is in good condition, then it may be a worthwhile investment to do the repair. I would also shop around for a mechanic as the prices vary greatly on old bikes. Still you have to make the decision. I am pretty sure you have to crack open the case to replace the gear set. So you will be into a lot of work. 16hrs of labor sounds about right. Give Dave a call. Good luck man, hope it works out. The more Supers on the road the better. Wish Honda made a new version!

I have a couple questions on my 87 Super.... I just bought it without 2nd gear thinking I could access it with out spliting the case. I don't know what to do with it. Sell it (as is) when I'm done or junk it. I love the bike but spending 1500 to fix it I'm not to keen on.

I am sure you can find the parts on eBay to swap out the tranny gears. It may take you a while, but people are always parting out Supers. I don't know what you have into it $$$ wise, but it really depends on how much you like the Super if you should put the investment of time / money into the bike. Get a factory shop manual first. Then you will know what you will be in for should you decide to fix it yourself. Back in 2007 when I bought my 88, I paid $3400 USD. It only had about 8300miles on it then. I don't think with the economy that the price of Super Magna's has gone up much. BUT in the future I am sure they will appreciate as they are very popular. If the sum total of the parts exceed what you think the bikes worth you may want to sell it. On the other hand, I have seen complete motor / trans on Ebay for well under the $1500 you stated (probably less than half that). Honda made a lot more 87 Super Magna's, if you look hard enough you may be able to find another with a good gear set and combine the two, or you can buy a complete motor. I would join the Facebook Super Magna group, and the V4 Muscle Bike forum and ask around There is a Delphi Super Magna group but the activity is a little slow there.
I really enjoy my Super Magna. It's light and very fast. It handles great for a cruiser. And the looks are timeless. Many people put on a VTX headlight (a bolt on swap) and BOOM, it looks like a new model. Honda just doesn't make anything comparable today IMHO. So I would hate to see one scraped out. Get some opinions before you decide. If it were mine I would probably try to fix it. Google search Dave Dodge. He used to race the V4 bikes for the factory Honda team back in the 80s. He can help.

That's the best link I could find. He's on Facebook too. I bought the oil mod kit for my 88 Super from him to help mitigate cam wear. Works great. He should be able to give you advice on what it takes to fix the gear set. He's built race V4 Honda Motors.
      Hope this helps!

Maybe you could advice more sources for Super Magna spare parts apart from Ebay and wemoto?

Other than BikeBandit, Ebay and Wemoto was my main sources for parts. Spares aren't easy to find for the Supers and they get harder to locate each year.
