I never put anything but salt., pepper and butter. But i cook mine for a real long time until the taters release their starch and get a but mushy but do not fall all apart. Just like my granny did. It really makes my hubby happy when i stew potatoes.
I grew up in Virginia but lived in coastal North Carolina before moving back to Virginia. I am used to stewed potatoes like you fixed them. In Carolina their stewed potatoes were prepared like mashed potatoes but instead of using milk they just used the water they boiled them in to mash them and added butter. Needless to say I was confused when I first had them . I Guess regionally we all do things a little differently. I find the differences interesting
Some people think the way they do it is the only way because they have never tried things from other places. I have been told I was not country, not southern etc by people who think their way of doing things is the only way LOL!
I'm in Carolina and I've never had a 'mashed' stewed potato. I add onions, salt, pepper, butter while its boiling. The potato's thicken on their own no need for that corn starch mess. We called them Irish potatoes. Sometimes I add cheese on top.
A traditional meal I learned from my mom was Salmon Patties with Stewed Potatoes, Turnip Greens and Southern Cornbread which means no sugar. No self respecting southerner would every put sugar in cornbread that's cake my daddy always said!
It feels shameful to be 40 years old and not know how to cook something so incredibly simple from my childhood! I can't tell you how grateful I am for your channel, Tammy. You're like the best neighbor who invites me into her kitchen to chat and cook. *Big hug*
Yes just like momma and granny did! Have you made potato cakes out of leftover mashed potatoes? Another favorite childhood food! Thanks for sharing! ❤️
I grew up on stewed potatoes, my mama made then often. My granddaughter begs me to make them for her and I love that. It’s really good over rice. The mixture of the potato broth on the rice gives it a delicious marriage. Try it next time.
Thank you for that potato stew video. Just like my moms. Love love love it. My mom also made stewed tomatoes too. She would use whole tomatoes. Cut the top core put them mash the tomatoes with her clean hands. Start a good boil then add CORN MEAL not flour. Taste great over cornbread mashed potatoes. Try it sometime. You’ll be amazed.
I keep the taters whole or halved. Flour not cornstarch...Like my Grandmother from the mountains in East Tennessee. A hit every time I make them. Thanks for the video
SC bound and my grandma and great grandma would make these all the time with Chicken and Dumplings along with sweet peas and biscuits my favorite meal!!!!
You need luscious potatoes from Maine! We are a potato growing State. 1/2 of the state grows potatoes! Including Kennebec which are sought after by famous chefs and they are a delicious potato. What gets exported from Maine is lovely what stays in Maine not so much but they still taste better than any other Potato I have had and I've lived overseas. The UK has a couple that would give Maine a run for their money.
My late husband would make these potatoes with roasted chicken and green beans. That was my favorite meal from him. Thank you Tammy for bringing back this memory.
Ooooo the wig you’re wearing looks lovely 🥰 Aussie gal is in the kitchen kicking it with Tammy and Chris and I’m learning about stewed potatoes 🥔 Ive never heard of them before so I’m gonna try when I get back home ❤😂
I've been watching a lot of your videos and learning. Thank you for this video. My Grandma used to make these and I never knew how but always loved them!
I’m Irish and I never heard of stewed potatoes, I am going to try them. They look so yummy! My mother’s best potatoes were sliced and fried in hot Crisco, I have never been able to duplicate them.
Wow, that looks good. I’ve never heard of stewed potatoes. I’m from Philadelphia, and my family just ate plain boiled potatoes most of the time. Once on our plate, we added a little butter and salt. I’m definitely going to try this. It’s very simple.
I made this to go with pinto beans yesterday evening & my husband loved it.we never had them made this way when we were kids.thank you for making this.God bless u Tammy
Wow you and I have the exact Temptations cookware and my cooking pots is also Salad Master. My parents bought it when I was sixteen. I have been using it for 52 years. Does work for a lifetime. 😊
My grandma always made stewed tatters she did serve them as a main course sometimes with a little extra black pepper on top and some cornbread sounds so good i might have to make some tonight!
I moved to north AL 11 years ago and discovered the love affair with Russet potatoes. I like them for baking, but, for me, I way prefer the Kennebec potato. If you have never had some, please try them. I bet you'll love them. They are not as mealy, retain solid chunks in potato salad, and have a lower starch content. Love your channel.
I was raised on stewed potatoes, love them. Mama made them for my Uncle each Sunday when they visited, he was really fond of hers. Mama usually had them once during the week as well, and I NEVER grew tired of them. She actually fried fatback (sort of like bacon) and used a few of the drippings from that to season them instead of butter, and only added salt. A few that ate with us didn’t like pepper cooked in it, so we added it at the table. We’d eat the fried fatback along with our meal, which usually consisted of several other vegetables in season and cornbread. It was delicious. These looked delicious as well! Thanks Tammy.
omg. i have watched all the staples of my childhood being cooked today. biscuits, stewed potatoes, banana pudding, and roast with potatoes and carrots. can i come live with you ?
A Excellent Video.. Highly Recommended.. Thank You Very Much For Sharing .. You Might Like To Look At The German Cookware Fissler. Also The Swiss Cookware ZEPTER..I Have Both Fissler, And Zepter...
My grandma added a little butter and milk then used a tablespoon of cornmeal to thicken them. Salt and pepper. We love them cooked this way. We didn’t drain them if there was a little water in the bottom that’s ok.
I am so glad I found this recipe and this channel because I'd forgotten the cornstarch step and I kept trying to figure out what I was missing thank you can't wait to do stewed potatoes tomorrow
Tip for today and when ever you are cooking potatoes, carrots and other root vegetables never put hot water in to speed up the cooking process only use cold water reason is the heat will overcook the outside while the middle will be under cooked xo
I have been craving stew taters for a week. I’m diabetic so I am not supposed to eat them. Now I need some scrambled fried squash and some northern beans with ham hocks. I said it right, not great northern beans. If they were great, they would be from the south.
I cut mine a little smaller, cause i use it for clam chowder, oyster chowder, soups and things.. You cut them to small? They will vanish into thin air, All you will have is? MASH POTATOES.. he hee ask me how i know 🤣🤣
OMG Tammy. Don't you look cute with blonde hair! Your skin is so fair it looks perfectly natural. You have the nicest pots and pans. I just love that brand!! I have never heard of stewed potatoes......they look delicious though and I love potatoes. I do make stewed tomatoes. Have you ever made those? Some ppl at least in VA that are elderly, call it "Tomato pudding." My heavens how I love them! You use a large can of diced tomatoes, sugar, loaf bread slices cubed up, and a smidge of vanilla. It is so good!!
Do you ever use new potatoes? I kinda remember a recipe from my x mother in law ? Can't remember the exact recipe, but this looks similar and great btw. Ty
love watchibng U. I would have mixed the corn starch in a little of the potato juice that U poured out - so it would mix up the cornstarch well. Not sure I've put milk in mine - but I'm sure it's good either way. Now, how do U make your potato soup - do U have a video on it?
I never put anything but salt., pepper and butter. But i cook mine for a real long time until the taters release their starch and get a but mushy but do not fall all apart. Just like my granny did. It really makes my hubby happy when i stew potatoes.
You need to do what makes him happy!
I Ike mine that way and add garlic powder and and a little smoked paprika
My Grandma used to make this for me and I loved it. I never got the recipe from her and have been craving it so thank you for doing this.
I grew up in Virginia but lived in coastal North Carolina before moving back to Virginia. I am used to stewed potatoes like you fixed them. @@Imstressless me either will be making
My mama added chopped onion to the potatoes as they cooked, and used flour instead of cornstarch..☺️ yum, yum.
Magdalene Jenkins mine too
I’m sure both r very good tho
Me also, plus I liked having more liquid in mine, with some hot fresh biscuits
Maybe add some crispy bacon too.
Magdalene Jenkins yummy sounding.

"These are some tuff taters!" The southern accent is everything. ❤❤❤
😭😭😭 yes
I've never heard of Stewed Potatoes, but I'm a potato girl, so I WILL be making these! 😋 Thank you Tammy!!!
These are wonderful!
A traditional meal I learned from my mom was Salmon Patties with Stewed Potatoes, Turnip Greens and Southern Cornbread which means no sugar. No self respecting southerner would every put sugar in cornbread that's cake my daddy always said!
Oh yes baby!
Now I know how my aunt made these use to love when she did 💕💯 thanks for sharing💯
It feels shameful to be 40 years old and not know how to cook something so incredibly simple from my childhood! I can't tell you how grateful I am for your channel, Tammy. You're like the best neighbor who invites me into her kitchen to chat and cook. *Big hug*
Big hug back Rebecca!
I know what you mean. My mom would prepare stewed potatoes with fish.
My mama always chopped up some onion and cooked it with the potatoes. It’s real good to me. Thank you for your videos!
Yes just like momma and granny did! Have you made potato cakes out of leftover mashed potatoes? Another favorite childhood food! Thanks for sharing! ❤️
Thank you for this recipe. My mom passed away 8 years ago and I have not been able to find a stewed potatoes recipe that taste like hers until now
So glad to hear that Tonya!
Bread and butter was always on the table and was so good with this. My mom usually boiled a chicken first and then boiled the potatoes in the broth!
My dad always fixed these when he fried fish, it’s a staple here in NC and they’re awesome, I cook them the same way he did
The way I made mine was drain completely, and the just add a lot of butter and then salt and pepper and mix with a spoon.
My dad came from Scotland and this dish originated in Scotland. My grandmother made it with much more sauce than this recipe.
Cajuns put it on rice with the sauce to cut the starch. Lol we put sausage in it. Yum
You needed a piece of chicken fried steak and fresh green beans to go with that.
I grew up on stewed potatoes, my mama made then often. My granddaughter begs me to make them for her and I love that. It’s really good over rice. The mixture of the potato broth on the rice gives it a delicious marriage. Try it next time.

Sounds good!
I'm glad I found this. Planning on making some tonight. I've made them before, but this is simpler. Good job!
I always made this with meatloaf.
Yummy!
I keep the taters whole or halved. Flour not cornstarch...Like my Grandmother from the mountains in East Tennessee. A hit every time I make them. Thanks for the video
This is how my grandmother made them.
SC bound and my grandma and great grandma would make these all the time with Chicken and Dumplings along with sweet peas and biscuits my favorite meal!!!!
I grew up eating these in Tennessee.
I like them a little more soupy and over cornbread. Simple goodness.
Just like my grandma used to make ..she called them "iced" potatos 🤣
My brother and I would crumble our cornbread and then put the stewed potatoes on top and mash it all up. That was our little treat. Butter of course.

They sound great Elizabeth!

Making theses today for New Year’s lunch. Thanks for the video...
My original pots and pans. 47 years ago. Still have some left. Waterless cookware. Came with a set of China. Still have those too. 😊
They are the best!
I’m Irish and I never heard of stewed potatoes, I am going to try them. They look so yummy! My mother’s best potatoes were sliced and fried in hot Crisco, I have never been able to duplicate them.

My grandma used to make her stewed potatoes like this. I love them so much.
Mama would have them with kraut and wieners, pinto beans and corn bread. Yummy!
Yum!
My grandma always made stewed tatters she did serve them as a main course sometimes with a little extra black pepper on top and some cornbread sounds so good i might have to make some tonight!
Dark spots in the potatoes depend more on the time of year they are harvested than anything else.
Looks delicious! I will give this recipe a try. Thanks for Sharing.

We love these but I don't make them often!
From n.c. we added fat back too
My mother in law loves the juice from stewed potatoes on her cornbread! 😊
They are a real comfort food!
I remember eating this as a kid and it was absolutely delicious 😋 now I can make it myself Thanks for the recipe
omg. i have watched all the staples of my childhood being cooked today. biscuits, stewed potatoes, banana pudding, and roast with potatoes and carrots. can i come live with you ?
My grandmother used to make stewed potatoes, but I think she added cornmeal

Looks yummy. We use to,put a can of English peas in our stewed potatos .. brings back good memories.
I have always eaten stewed potatoes like a stew, in a bowl. I just eat mine with cornbread. Maybe a little bacon on top lol.
I watch you often and love your videos. The blonde hair looks great on you. 💞
I am so glad I found this recipe and this channel because I'd forgotten the cornstarch step and I kept trying to figure out what I was missing thank you can't wait to do stewed potatoes tomorrow
Good I am glad I could help! Welcome to CVC!
Stewed potatoes, cornbread and either bacon or pintos. Can't be beat.
I use cornmeal to thicken. Works real good. Love stewed tators! Yum.
Butter? Not that it matters, but the wrapper says Land O' Lakes Margarine (5:57).
Tip for today and when ever you are cooking potatoes, carrots and other root vegetables never put hot water in to speed up the cooking process only use cold water reason is the heat will overcook the outside while the middle will be under cooked xo
interesting, I put onions in mine.
Use a small bowl to mix using a little milk at a time.
I grew up in the south and somehow I haven’t seen this before
Throw some dumplings in there! My Mama made potato dumplings all the time. Yummy!
Never had it done this way. Mom used cream or whole milk so good 😊
I have been craving stew taters for a week. I’m diabetic so I am not supposed to eat them. Now I need some scrambled fried squash and some northern beans with ham hocks. I said it right, not great northern beans. If they were great, they would be from the south.
That's a good simple recipe. I love stewed potatoes and cornbread. Sometimes I cook some bacon until it is not quite done and add it to the potatoes.
My momma never cooked like you. Thanks Tammy
Just like my mama made them and taught me....mmm so good!
I add onions, salt, pepper, butter and a little milk 🙂
Looks good I think my kids would like this recipe.my boys are potato and meat eater's ..
I cut mine a little smaller, cause i use it for clam chowder, oyster chowder, soups and things.. You cut them to small? They will vanish into thin air, All you will have is? MASH POTATOES.. he hee ask me how i know 🤣🤣
You have the kitchen of my dreams!
In northern Appalachia we call these shook down potatoes.
Margarine is not butter. Anymore than Coca-Cola is Pepsi.
I like margarine and butter and coca cola and pepsi.
That's the way my momma cooked them, ate them with saltine crackers
Mom made it all the time I have done it a few times but he they are good
OMG Tammy. Don't you look cute with blonde hair! Your skin is so fair it looks perfectly natural. You have the nicest pots and pans. I just love that brand!! Just like mama makes! Thank you for sharing!
I wish I could peel my potatoes like that. I gotta use a tool lol.
This looks delicious but SO fattening
Just like my grandma did. I grew up in NW part of NC and you cook just like my grandma did! Love it! Keep the recipes coming Tammy!
Could I use water, if I don't have any milk to mix with the cornstarch?
You could Marsha!
That wig is the cutest one I've seen you wear. Adorable.
Thank you!
Delish!!😘😘😘
Do you ever use new potatoes? I kinda remember a recipe from my x mother in law ? Can't remember the exact recipe, but this looks similar and great btw. Ty

Why have I never had stewed potatoes.....and I was born in the south. They look delicious
Can I use cornmeal instead of corn starch?
No
love watchibng U. I would have mixed the corn starch in a little of the potato juice that U poured out - so it would mix up the cornstarch well. Not sure I've put milk in mine - but I'm sure it's good either way. Now, how do U make your potato soup - do U have a video on it?

I LOVE STEWED TATERS ❗❗
Thanks for sharing Tammy! Love potatoes !!!👍
I always add onions also
Could you use flour as a thickener with the milk?
Sure you can Mishael!
Collard Valley Cooks Thanks so much. My husband grew up eating potatoes this way and I wasn't sure how to make it. He loved them.
you look very pretty as a blond Tami! these potatoes look delicious! I’ve never heard of stewed potatoes!
I remember my granny stewing potatoes. I do this as well as my mom. My 18 year old son can eat the mess out of potatoes
They are so yummy Wendy! Thanks for watching my channel!
Mmmmmm with dill!
