- DOCTOR WHO RATINGS: THE TOM BAKER YEARS (1974-1981)
Tom Baker became the fourth actor to play the part of Doctor Who when took to the TARDIS in 1974. It would begin an unprecedented 7-year streak, one in which he would battle old foes like the Daleks, Cybermen and the Master, but would go on to face a whole host of brand new aliens and enemies!
But how did the ratings hold up? Would they continue to rise and go beyond the heights of the Jon Pertwee era? Or would they see a downward slide from which there was no recovery? Get yourself comfy, join me for the next four hours, and find out!

The tribute to Liz Sladen and here whole work on the show and her life was immense. very well done
Very well done. Tom Baker was my Doctor. I was 5 years old when Tom took over. My first memory of Doctor Who was The Time Warrior with Jon Pertwee. The next story I really remember was Planet of the Spiders where Jon became Tom. I immediately liked Tom and kept watching, and he became my favourite and still is. I do prefer the earlier seasons as I enjoy the horror style stories.
snap. exactly yhe same. i bet you remember seeing carry on screaming late evening mid 70's halloween dan dan the laverty man ...its a commen odd thing..that i hear occasionally about - some tv writers/stats cite that moment changed them. And then there is the bizaar image of..i think it was a drwho or tales episode..never found out what...but an old couple , fire, small littlel creatures, tripping down the stairs an old women. Back to WHO. Cried when Pertwee died and hated the new Dr and then LOVED the new Dr and then jungle planet story lost interest and went out to play before watching and loving WHO again. Last seasons were unwatchable mind you, and a real shame appears Baker was a total nightmare to work with.
I find it crazy that the Full Circle repeat, for a couple of episodes, got better ratings than the initial broadcast
What an incredible run down of the Baker years. Thank you so much. Tom will always be "my" Doctor and this is the finest critique I have ever seen of his era. Thank you.
To think, it all started out as a mild curiosity in Adam Martyns collection, now it's turned out to be quite a great spirit of adventure. Epic and inspiring storytelling across so much space and time - and the Baker years weren't bad, either;)
Nice quote adaptation! 😁 glad you've enjoyed it!
Just binged this entire series so far
I hope you've enjoyed the series thus far! 😁
To me, no one comes close to Baker, his doctor was truly something special !
Our local public television station would show the episodes consecutively, great memories.
I was half asleep and clicked on a picture of Tom Baker, then this came up. Not what I expected but now I'm totally hooked and subscribed. Thanks Adam, I'm looking forward to watching more of your stuff.
The faces of the 'morbius doctors' are actually all faces of people who worked on the show ie Robert Holmes and Christopher Barry
Best Doctor ever! I remember watching it as a little kid.
This is stunningly well researched and a pleasure to watch. Thanks Adam 😊
That's so kind! Thank YOU for watching 😊
Brilliant video Adam
Thanks pal!
@@AdamMartyn No problem
"Your first Doctor is your favorite..." seems to be the mantra of the show.
Tom Baker's wild eyes and massive grin can't be matched... ;-)
At 2:06:28, that's the late Diana Dors' husband, Alan Lake. Had to Google to check. Thought I recognised him!
To me, growing up in the 1970s and a DC and Marvel fan (and a girl) - Tom Baker was THE Doctor. Playful, witty, eccentric, maybe even slightly mad. He has a dazzling charisma and his voice is so distinctive (I'd imagine he does well doing audiobooks and voiceovers, even now).
Remember watching K-9 Adventures with my sister and even to our less discerning childs' minds, we thought it was pretty rubbish.
Tom Baker also achieved some internet fame if you read the Popbitch Board (RIP) and their email newsletter. So much so, I sent my friend an SMS via BT and got 'Tom Baker' to read out his Popbitch catchphrase. Wikipedia tells me it was 2006 - didn't realise it was so long ago.
With changes in date and times it's no wonder Dr Who figures are all over the place! This would seem to be like commercial Australian free to air TV where any SciFi was always shuffled about at a whim. As a friend of mine said if there was a repeat of International Snail Wrestling available they would put that a head of any SciFi series. Thankfully with streaming we can forget the whims of TV stations and just binge it later on!
Robot was my first classic Doctor Who story. Tom was my first Doctor, and he’s still one of My Doctors! :)
Fantastic and compelling series! I’m hooked…. Might be worth noting that the Dr Who and the Monsters repeat season didn’t air on BBC Cymru Wales; we had something scintillating in Welsh instead, as was the practice in those days……
UK had around 55 million in the 1970s so you had 16% of the population watch Tom Baker (I couldn't imagine waiting each week for the next episode) in Australia we saw it every afternoon before the 7pm news on the ABC and with the Goodies a great binge fest (as much as you could in those days).
Super interesting and well presented/researched. Great vid, keep up the good work!
Barry Letts stayed on just for 'Robot', so that Philip Hinchcliffe could shadow him before taking over. Letts and Dicks made an intentional decision for the season to begin with a 'familiar' Pertwee-style story.
As a teenager the most scary were Brain of Morbius (that was shown late at night originally in Australia), Seeds of Doom, Pyramids of Mars, Robots of Death but mostly was Morbius the rest were never so terrifying as that perhaps cause was broadcast so late in the evening but the rest Hand of Fear, Horror at Fang Rock were unsettling as a teenager they were cool enough to be unsettling but never any nightmares. I was a bit after Baker should have been in Peterson's time but he was like his bit of celery on his jacket limp compared to Baker or Pertwee! Baker is my favorite sadly Hinchcliffe and Holmes being lost - why didn't they just move it to bit later in the day - certainly didn't worry ABC in Australia in the 1980s (I guess the news had enough violence in the day to make one numb to Dr Who).
Dude....incredible work and this is my entry to your videos. Definitely a subscriber now...
4 and a half hours? This is so cool mate!, This could easily air on BBC Two instead of the daily morning simulcast of BBC News 24!
I'll get writing a petition to them! Thank you so much Roger! 😊
@@AdamMartyn YES!!!!!!!
These vids also make me want to watch Crossroads..
Yo this is so cool, amazing work, hope your channel blows up so more people can see this
Thats very kind Ryan thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it 😁
9:52 huh. The 11th box on the 11th numbered bigger box. What new meaning that now holds.
Great channel. Can anyone help me? I remember as a 5 year old watching at around 7 or 8 pm on I think - ITV, a sci fi show. It has bugged me to this day the name of it. All I remember was a (bearded) guy who worked in TV repair shop - he was always kissing a lady who I think was an alien. It was not Sapphire & Steel, but was around the same time 1978 - 1980. Anyone?
Better ask it on Reddit:)
Post here is you find out please.I actually don't remember it, but I was 8, so if I saw it I'll probably remember it if I see pictures
I'd love to have seen these on the collection blu-rays! Good job on all this. Your hard work pays off.
Oh man if only, that would be a dream come true!
JEEZ!!! 4 hours!
At least it can’t get much longer 😂
The 12 is my favourite doctor ❤ 😍
Imagine when I've finally finished the series and I make a MEGA compilation 👀
@@AdamMartyn do it please
@@AdamMartyn that would probably over 24 hours
Tom Baker=⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
What a great video! You however forgot to mention that the audio of Genesis of the Daleks was available on LP. I remember my brother having it as a child and being terrified by it.
This is very interesting, I'm hooked and this thing seems so nerdy on paper! 🤠
This is excellent.
Terror of the Zygons also released on Laserdisc.
Casting a Chinese actor as Li H’sen Chang could not possibly have worked in The Talons of Weng Chiang. The serial is a pastiche of the Fu Manchu films of the 1930s onwards, in which a western actor was always cast in the title role. Holmes clearly wished to pay tribute to those old films, their style and atmosphere, and that inevitably meant retaining their casting choices. You can argue that the whole project was misbegotten, and that Talons should just not have been made - although I think you would agree that that is an extreme position - but then, equally, the idea that it could all have been “fixed” with a different casting choice is in my view to misunderstand what Talons was conceived to be. I think the appropriate phrase is - “it is what it is”.
Tom baker is my sixth favourite doctor who and series 13 is my favourite series of his era and series 17 is my second favourite series of his era as doctor who and 16 is my third favourite series of his era as the fourth doctor and series 18 is my fifth favourite doctor who series and series 16 is my sixth favourite doctor who series of his era series 15 is my least favourite doctor who series of his era 12 is my four favourite series of his era I love every story of Tom bakers era as the fourth doctor and he was my dads doctor and still is
Love these videos! Fascinating and informative! Well done!!!
Another lovely video. So very impressed. I keep saying these should be on DVD's and sold professionally. Well done and thank you so much for these. You seemed to think Brain of Morbius was a better story than Android Invasion, and that's just bizarre and so wrong. It has to be the worst Tom Baker episode of all time. LOL!!!!!
Take a shot every time he mentions new faces
How come you didn’t mention the Max Headroom Incident, the thing that Doctor Who was sort of involved in
I've done a whole video on the Max Headroom incident elsewhere on the channel! 😊
I know but you could have also mentioned it here, since you also talked about the episode it hijacked in this video
So Romana went into e-space with K9 and was never heard from again? Or did her fate come up in some later episode?
She pooped back up in the expanded universe
Gosh, this is a lot to take in. Just finished watching this compilation in its entirety (over several sessions). It is strangely addictive!
I have been a Doctor Who fan for about 50 years and watched the classic series fairly consistently since season 11. I would have said Jon Pertwee was 'my' Doctor and had the best stories (up until I got to re-watch them on VHS in the cold light of day during the early 90s).
I would now say that Tom Baker in seasons 12-14 is 'my' Doctor and as such think you are being way too generous in your appraisal of story and production quality for seasons 15-18. I was one of the viewers watching during the late 70s decline in viewers - but it was like the loyalty of a football fan going to watch their team putting in a painfully dismal performance after supersonic former glories... (I can seriously say that if it wasn't for the Target novelisations and Doctor Who Weekly/Monthly, I think I would have bailed on my fandom).
Good work. Am an 'enthusiastic amateur' when it comes to Who compared with the knowledgeable hardcore fiends on here like yourself. I'm old enough just to remember the late Baker years, although most of the Davison era is what I only properly recall, but Baker is 'my' Who. Drifted away from the show during late Davison as I preferred reading 2000AD. It seems critical mass and public opinion merge as Gothic Who enjoyed both critical acclaim (rated highly in retrospect) and huge ratings. Must watch Deadly Assassin.
Wasn’t there a trailer for The Ark in Space?
has anyone in the present day ever wondered where that police box went?
This is awesome mate
If they'd cast a Chinese actor in a villainous role people would still be complaining.
Awesomeness
I'm in that camp that thinks Bakers First and Last Seasons are clunkers, I think really the new look from series 13 all the way to Shada are the golden period, really for me the only doctors with clear runs with at most 2 or 3 clunkers are Jon Pertwee and Matt Smith. I especially like seasons 13 and 14 with Face of Evil being my favourite Baker Story as it has the best twist in the story in the 3rd episode and the concept of people reverting to a primal state is something that has been explored since in alot of post apocalyptic fiction and the Mad Computer was cheekily reused by Doug Adams in the 3rd hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy book.
Black Guardian was better than white - Valentine Dyall did a superb job in that position!
Will you continue this series into modern Doctor Who (2005 onwards)
If you notice when Jon pertwee regenerated into tom Baker his clothes changed at the same time aswell something that's never happened again during a regeneration so that was the first and only time a newly regenerated doctor wasn't wearing his predecessors clothing.
I think it also happened with Hartnell into Troughton, granted it’s harder to tell there with the episodes missing & relying off of telesnaps
I'm confused. I just watched it again and Tom is wearing Jon's outfit. What do you mean?
The only times the clothes have changed at regeneration is from Hartnell to Troughton, and Whittaker to Tenant.
Violence or violins?
Epic
I do feel I should mention that the description is still JP’s era!
Just sorted it! Thanks for the heads up!
@@AdamMartyn You’re welcome!
This is so wonderfully geeky.
Marvellous
Ant p uk teacher retired
Marry Whitehouse the Umbridge of Whoniverse
Another excellent video. I guess I am nitpicking but the 'Planet of the Apes' tv series began in the Autumn of 1974 and therefore was not being broadcast against the original airing of series 12 of Doctor Who on BBC1.
4:12:13
While Revenge of the Cybermen is, in my opinion, the weakest story of Tom Baker’s first season, it does have it’s redeemable moments and a lot of meme potential.
JNT was the death of Who.
The Graham Williams years was mostly painful to watch
Your lecture on Talons is typical of your privileged generation. You've no idea about Britain back then.
Here we go... 🫠😂
I loved this when I was 6 but it's shite
It really isn't mate, the production quality might not have been great for certain seasons and overall doesn't compare to what we have today but the stories and show was still great and is held in high regards by millions
@@kennyt4849my son sees things at age 6 definitely more diverse and graphic than I saw. And yet when I show him an episode from the year when I was 6, he wants it off. But because it's shite, but because it's scary. It's psychologically unnerving, that's one of its great strengths. I'm only talking about 74 - 77 though. After that it's very different, which of course this documentary explains
