I've heard critiques that Hartnell was a bad or below average actor 'cause he was clearly having trouble with his lines and stumbled over them often, but I understood that most if not all these scenes were one-takes, and to me, the fact that he can stumble over his lines but still keep rolling, and play them off as just quirks of his character, proves what a great actor he is. Honestly, it took me a while to realize that was even what was happening at all, it just seemed like that was part of the Doctor's character. I also loved this period where the companions were there to do more than just ask the Doctor questions and marvel at his sheer brilliance. We do still get glimpses of competancy from companions in the modern era, but here it truly felt like each character was an equal member of the team with something to offer.

Six years ago, I would've _never_ expected to see part 1 remastered like this. You've no idea how much joy this series gives me, especially these days. Hats off.
This was perfectly timed considering I'm nearly finished with my full viewing of the Hartnell Era. After I get through The Smugglers and Tenth Planet, I'll watch this video.
A cross between The Wizard of Oz and Father Christmas. To me, that's the spirit that's been lost by more recent series. I think that perfectly encapsulates who I see as The Doctor.
This is the best Doctor Who content to come out May 11th! I've had your restrospectives on repeat as white noise for months, I'm only 10 mins into this and your passion hasn't faltered at all. Thanks as always, and I hope the gratitude you receive from all your hard work into these is felt!

Waiting one year for the 12th doctor video, after probably subbing you for 7,8 years gonna be honest this is still awesome, professional and soothing to listen to
Hey, man. I hope you won't stop making these, even if there's nothing else to talk about when it comes to Dr. Who, I hope you'll keep on making these for other types of media that you enjoy. I simply love these videos!
I didn’t expect upgraded versions of your series till they were done (or aligned with the current Doctor)looks amazing. Thankyou for your hardwork. But we beg of you get us to Doctor 13 n all the production stuff of 12/13 cannot wait for your Jodie Era episode. She was my introductory doctor, so I came in blank slate n then dabbled in eleven before starting modern who. I’ve used your retrospectives as placeholders for classic for now so when I feel like watching classic who I watched this instead thanks again cannot wait for 12 and 13.
This was just incredible remake ! Love all the new details on the origins on the show , bbc producers and actors ! I just adore the William Hartnell era , the pure historicals are just amazing and how he slowly develops into the hero we know , fighting against the evil of the universe ! 1st doctor has some of the best tardis teams , particularly Ian and Barbara , just love how she stands up to him in the edge of destruction
Love that you remade this video. I don't think you will understand how much comfort these videos give me when I'm having a sort of frantic day. I can just put these on over and over again. I never get tired of them. What's crazy about your statement about people knowing about the Daleks, is that I didn't know anything about Doctor Who just a couple years ago but somehow knew that dales were from Doctor Who. I watched the parody "Inspector Spacetime" on Community and immediately knew it was a parody of Doctor who. It was Troy and Abed's love for Inspector Spacetime, that first got me to check the show out. Now I'm hooked. I just wish I could remember how I knew about Doctor Who without ever watching it.
I actually rewatched the full series of this recently. There original was good, of course, but this version is a huge improvement on just about every front. Looking forward to the next one.
@@cleverdickfilms I have a very conflicted view on Peter Capaldi's era. I love Clara Oswald, Missy, Davros (who only had 2 episodes but by God did he deliver) and the overall story arcs, at least for the first 2 seasons. I even have a soft spot for Danny Pink and Ashildr could give one look from those tired eyes and I'd see a million years contained in an 18 year old body. However, I couldn't stand Peter Capaldi himself. I didn't stick around after River Song's story was wrapped up even though, on paper, he should have been my favourite Doctor. Ironically, I actually believed that Davros was more sincere about questioning his morality than Capaldi was. Put John Hurt in Capaldi's place and Series 8 and 9 would be my favourite seasons. Capaldi made me feel like I was watching the Valeyard on a redemption arc. And I would have been fine with that if not for one problem. The Valeyard wasn't in the scripts. Michael Jayston was still alive at the time so if the Valeyard's presence was intentional, they should have brought him back. When Clara was about to walk to her death, I half expected Capaldi to break into an evil smile and tell her that he planned it.
@@ennayanne bit harsh. Capaldi took a long while to grow on me. I think it was Heaven Sent that finally got me to like him. If someone stopped before then or the story just didn't grab them, I can see them not enjoying Capaldi. These days he's one of my favourites, but it took me a while to like him.
Well done my man, your efforts are impressive.I have watched this whole thing in 1 sitting and very satisfying i found it. With all the nonsense of the latest incarnation of the doctor I needed a healthy dose of REAL DOCTOR WHO and this was just the remedy.Fantastic and very well written and comprehensive in its coverage of William Hartnells era.Thank you.
Wow! You have really outdone yourself, your videos are always fantastic but this is NEXT LEVEL stuff! I am in awe. And your love for Doctor Who always shines through. Brilliant! And of course this is pretty great timing for me to watch this as a brand new season of Doctor Who begins tomorrow and I am very excited! Fantastic stuff!
Been waiting for the updated introspectives since the topic came up. Can’t wait to sit down and watch this more times than I’m willing to share 😂😂😂 Bravo, sir. Love your work and am always excited to see the next installment. Very excited for the Troughton-era remake. He swiftly became my favourite Doctor, partly because of your original video. Can’t wait to see what other fun insights and information you dish out next!
Funny how The Celestial Toymaker was initially meant to be the result of an unorthodox changing of the guard, and about 57 years later, he would do just that.
I recently managed to complete all of the Hartnell [and Troughton] era, filling in the missing gaps with audio after having only seen the complete stories on DVDs or repeated TV runs. So, this was also timely and not just because of the 2024 episodes. Nice redoing that was better than the original Hartnell retrospective than I expected.
I am grateful you redone William Hartnell’s era. I felt like he was not given the same treatment as the second and onwards doctors eras. Thanks Dick! (I may or may not have major respect for Hartnell’s contribution to Doctor Who. The man defined the Show. The last Relic of his era then passing on the torch to Patrick Hartnell, and the rest is history.)
I just benched 1h 47mins of a video that is a redux of a video I have watched like 5 times already !!! This is hands down the best doctor who channels out there.
Just when I thought the best series on UA-cam couldn't get any better. This is simply masterful, the entire expansion is the definitive article and is the bar that all other content in this vein must strive for. Thank you so much for all of your work!
In retrospect, I wonder if we can explain the First Doctor’s initial rough edges as resulting from his forced regeneration and memory loss as detailed in the Chibnall era. Obviously that wasn’t the original intention, and we all know how controversial the Timeless Child/Division plots are. But it weirdly can fit with a Doctor who, in recent incarnations, had far fewer scruples.
I was 6 when my father came home from work and said we should watch the 2nd episode (we'd missed the first) as colleagues had said it was great. Have very happy memories of watching the programmes, with the wonderful (imo) William Hartnell. Also adored the daleks- I had 2 quite large models. If I still HAD them I might be rich.. And loved the Quatermass films with my father, and still watch them on DVD sometimes. Like your mother I'm not a conventional SF nut, but I enjoyed and still enjoy a good story- or would if there still were any, And miss my father. Thanks for your film, it's very interesting.
I grew up watching the revival series, I always found the classic series to be this alluring hidden world as a child, I would read about it in magazines and watch (but not really understand) the odd episode that I found on daily motion or was given on dvd as a present. Though I've never truly lost interest in the show and have always watched and discussed every episode as it comes out, the announcement of Russel T Davies and David Tennant returning back in 2022 truly reignited my love and fascination with the show and led to me finally starting a watch-through of the original series. I was and am really surprised at how much I now love Hartnell's portrayal. The clips of him I had seen previously plus David Bradley's pretty naff portrayal didn't make me excited about him at all, and had always considered him in my bottom 3, I saw him as this obligatory incarnation that you had to get through before the show spread its wings properly and we got a much more familiar version of the character with Troughton. but now I do really love him, especially his more heroic characterisation alongside Vicky and Steven (Who I also really love as companions), and have found his era very exciting and experimental. I've just finished The Dalek's Masterplan which you didn't hold to high praise here but I found extremely exciting, although yes it does drop a bit once they first return to the Tardis, but I found it really landed in the end. It all felt very urgent and high stakes which kept me truly captivated - which I wasn't expecting to see at all until at least the 70s. Really great video, I've watched your original one a few times, I often find myself binge watching all of your era reviews when I am unwell or working on a project, but it's really interesting seeing this now after seeing most of the episodes you're referring to, and seeing how much my perception has changed on the era. Very much looking forward to the next one - whether it's another expansion, a Capaldi era review or something else entirely
Hi Richard. Firstly, I thank you for your dedication and superb work on this episode of the DW retrospective. I have to say two things. Firstly, while I appreciate that you remade the Hartnell episode with more details and new information that has surfaced since the 60th, but I felt that this episode felt too stuffed with detail. To its detriment. The original focused more on the core characters and people that were envolved on the production of Who, particularly Lambert and Hartnell. So, in a way, some of the expanded detail heavily leaned the episode towards the production rather than the concepts and ideas of the episodes that were analysed. Despite this, I have to say that is also the reason I ended up enjoying this episode more. When your original video came out, details and stories about the early years of Doctor Who were scattered on several multimedia sources (f.e. An Adventure in Space in Time and Paul Hayes' book). So in a way, and that is my understanding of your expanded video, you tried to compile all that information and expand on some more details. I also believe that ever since BBC Archive channel was created, more of the archive of the corporation has been made available to the public, allowing for bigger scrutiny in regards to what was said and done during the production of Doctor Who. So, to summarise, thank you Richard for this wonderful video and I hope to see and hear more from you soon.
You’re most welcome! It’s always tricky to strike the right balance, but I wanted to do the era justice and I felt I missed out a lot of important people last time. Best wishes!
I am so excited to watch this. Man, it's behind Smith's Era in Length!!! You are still my Favorite WhoTuber, you take your time reviewing each time and boy it's so worth it once done!!! Can't wait for Capaldi, because I finally meet someone in DW, and was a person in DW during my time, and I will go into more Details Later, or as The Doctor says, "I will explain Later!!!"
Wow! So glad I found this! Great upgrade and update on the original. Thanks so much for returning to your superlative documentary series, Richard. Can't wait for the next one!
So wonderful after seeing the great NuWho videos that we're revisiting the old favorites with feature-length retrospectives as well! With Capaldi and Troughton being next (I assume), we have amazing eras to look forward to.

I am always delighted when I receive a notification of new content by you and you never disappoint. This is another finely crafted in-depth analysis that was a delight to watch, totally engaging from beginning to end. As a committed long term Who fan (the last 2 iterations excluded) who has been watching the show from when it first started, I think it is wonderful that you are chronicling a detailed narrative history of the show which brings back lovely memories. I am always amazed at the quality of your work, it certainly would exceed anything the BBC could do in the area.
Another phenomenal production. I loved hearing the new information you had added to an already brilliant episode. Thank you for the very hard work you put in from some bloke in the US.
Have to say absolutely loving this, what great timing. Ncuti and millies first episodes were superb but i love old who just as much so loving this new vid from you....and really really really looking forward to your capaldi video, underappreciated era. Love who ❤, love your stuff richard ❤
Somehow UA-cam didn’t tell me this was out yet, but glad it showed up now. A nice reward after a full day working on my thesis 😅 Thanks for all the hard work you put into these documentaries! And hopefully the algorithm will pick it up soon because I know if any creator deserves the boost its you🙏
As expected, a brilliantly informative, highly entertaining, and expertly crafted video that's a must watch for any Whovian. A superb remaster if you will that’s even more encompassing than the original video. Truly an impressive labor of love. I can’t sing my praises for Richard higher. This is a masterclass of how to do a documentary-like video.
I just watched through William Hartnell not long ago! I love this era, it's so different compared to all the other Doctors'. To me, the stories of the 1st Doctor were much more about trying to escape situations they found themselves in rather than saving the day or being heros. They did help the people they came across, but it was as they came across them rather than going out of their way to do so. It wasn't until The War Machines that the Doctor took a more directly heroic role, one I'm not sure fit him. But this did lead to the development of how the show feels today. I love your work! I look forward to seeing more!
This is very good work. As indeed, the original version was, but the expansion was warranted and you added a lot of new information. I hope you can continue and update the other classic doctors as appropriate if you have more to add. Enjoyed your DW films for a long time and hope to see more.
This is (so far) your best produced yet and if this is the standard of quality for all future videos then frankly I wouldn’t mind waiting a decade for your Capaldi retrospective. The Star Wars special editions wish they could’ve been such an upgrade. Haha!
Wow, this was well worth the wait! Incredible research and presentation as always, the story of the production and analysis of the story always makes for an enlightening and entertaining watch.
Your love for this show is showing and I love it too! Thank you for these in depth looks at my favorite show of all time too! I can't wait to see your take on Capaldi!

I know you’re Clever Dick, but you’ve clearly worked your balls off on this. Thank you, it’s a triumph, a labour of love. I’ve recently had a tradition of listening to your videos on Sunday mornings and afternoons in the background while I make my family breakfast and Sunday lunch and today it was awesome prepping food for the bbq while enjoying this for the first time. Also - I love the research you put into covering everything that led up to creating the show. Awesome work
My version of the beginning portion would be set in 2005, my nan settling down on the sofa getting ready to watch the new series of Doctor who in April, unaware that her yet unborn grandkid would one day, not long from that day, would watch it alongside her in earnest.
I believe the pure historical stories offered some of Hartnell best performances as the Doctor, aside from that one moment in the War Machines where he steps forward and faces down the attacking machine as it crawls towards him.
Ive never seen the first 2 doctors at all but im fascinated to learn. Something about Dr Who and Quatermass always gave me a tingle of fear and excitment other scifi shows didnt quite hit.. the incredible music, the storylines, they were that bit darker and scarier, something i enjoy returning to as an adult with these great videos, thanks for your hard work!

This was perfectly timed considering I'm nearly finished with my full viewing of the Hartnell Era. After I get through The Smugglers and Tenth Planet, I'll watch this video.
The Smugglers is underrated imo
New series of Doctor Who has started and now we have a new Doctor Who video from Clever Dick?!?!? What a perfect weekend for Dr Who Fans!!!!
I take it that you haven’t seen those first two Gatwa episodes then? Oh. My. God.
Perfect weekend for doctor who fans? More like end of doctor who.
HOLY CRAP IT’S RIVERDUDE COVERS HI
Yeah the new episodes suck
I had high hopes for Ncuti Gatwa, but so far I'm not impressed. Clearly RTD is not the writer he once was
A cross between The Wizard of Oz and Father Christmas.
To me, that's the spirit that's been lost by more recent series. I think that perfectly encapsulates who I see as The Doctor.
I think I've said this before but your documentaries are so much better than any "official" offering.
This is the best Doctor Who content to come out May 11th!
I've had your restrospectives on repeat as white noise for months, I'm only 10 mins into this and your passion hasn't faltered at all.
Thanks as always, and I hope the gratitude you receive from all your hard work into these is felt!
The greatest Doctor Who UA-camr is back. And this time, he's bigger and more ambitious than before.
Congratulations Clever Dick Films, this is a masterpiece, the best video you've done so far. I've been a fan of you and your channel for many years, since the very early days, when I found the Pertwee era video. I've been following ever since, and I watch every new video you release. You're work is the most quality content I've ever seen on UA-cam, and it keeps on getting better and better over time
Waiting one year for the 12th doctor video, after probably subbing you for 7,8 years
gonna be honest this is still awesome, professional and soothing to listen to
Hey, man. I hope you won't stop making these, even if there's nothing else to talk about when it comes to Dr. Who, I hope you'll keep on making these for other types of media that you enjoy. I simply love these videos!
Absolutely fabulous a fantastic opening on the history of doctor who, you’ve outdone yourself yet again.
I just finished watching the Hartnell run, so great timing.
*What stills remains of the Hartnell run...
:(
This was just incredible remake !
My word you are a brilliant documentary maker Richard. I’m almost lost for words how excellent this is. Absolutely sublime 🙏🏻❤️
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed!
I still cannot wait for you to review the Capaldi Era
That's up next, have no fear!
@@cleverdickfilms im so excited for it! good luck!!
@@tomnorton4277wow you have the exact opposite of the correct opinion
Thanks so much for your kind words! Glad you enjoyed!
Been waiting for the updated introspectives since the topic came up. Can’t wait to sit down and watch this more times than I’m willing to share 😂😂😂
Bravo, sir.
Thank you for this. Your series is why I became a Whovian. You made me appreciate and admire doctor who so much more.
Really is one of, if not THE best documentary series of any media. Cant wait to watch again.
A REMASTER?
Im actually stunned, Cleverdick. Incredible swing. And I'm still alive to see it!
I'm about to rewatch my Hartnell DVDS so this is the perfect way to get me in the mood for episode one series one .
Hope you enjoy!
This has to be the best documentary series on Doctor Who currently availible. Thank you for this wonderful remake.
Best wishes!
i cant wait to watch all of these over the span of the next decade
I am so excited to watch this. Man, it's behind Smith's Era in Length!!! You are still my Favorite WhoTuber, you take your time reviewing each time and boy it's so worth it once done!!!
Can't wait for Capaldi, because I finally meet someone in DW, and was a person in DW during my time, and I will go into more Details Later, or as The Doctor says, "I will explain Later!!!"
Wow! So glad I found this!
Great upgrade and update on the original. Thanks so much for returning to your superlative documentary series, Richard.
Can't wait for the next one!
How do you improve on perfection? Well if it's you, you do it with great ease! Absolutely loved this Richard, thank you
You’re most welcome, Jack! Thanks for your lovely comments!
So wonderful after seeing the great NuWho videos that we're revisiting the old favorites with feature-length retrospectives as well!
With Capaldi and Troughton being next (I assume), we have amazing eras to look forward to.
throwback to me in senior year of high school procastinating on my winter break homework watching the original version of this ,
its been like 3 years since i graduated university
I appreciate the expanded first Doctor retrospective. Thanks for re-uploading this!
I loved your original video about this era, and this revised and expanded version is wonderful to see. Thank you, as always, for sharing!
Very nice, can’t wait for the Capaldi era
Thanks so much for your kind words!
Incredible! It's so much fun to compare this to the original and see how far this series has come!
Always dropping banger videos
Excellent updated version. Thank you. 👍🏻
You're most welcome!
This is (so far) your best produced yet and if this is the standard of quality for all future videos then frankly I wouldn’t mind waiting a decade for your Capaldi retrospective. The Star Wars special editions wish they could’ve been such an upgrade. Haha!
Impeccable timing, always look forward to your uploads
I love your reviews. I don't always agree with them, but I do enjoy them. I'm hoping to see a Capaldi review someday--he's my favorite Doctor
I always pop in now and then to see how your channel is doing, and this morning I got the double treat or not only new doctor who, but a remake of one of my favourite series on UA-cam. Thanks a lot for all your hard work mate, its always appreciated!
This new versions looks too good to watch on my phone - I'm going to have to stream this on the TV. Congratulations on another beautifully crafted doc.
Absolutely brilliant! Thank you so much for taking me back in time to my childhood with all sorts of details I didn't know at the time.
It’s a wonderful time to be a doctor who fan, the new season has just premiered, and Richard Carrier has uploaded
Another incredible, detailed and informative video on the history of Who. Must have been an Herculean task! From one who grew on videos of classic who thank you and I hope you feel up to continuing this series of extended videos.
My friend, let it be known that you have helped educate an American fan through your series of films about the creation history of perhaps my favorite show. Thank you for all of your work.
You’re most welcome!
1:33:53 - Fun fact: Zienia Merton would later become well known as Sandra Benes in Gerry Anderson’s Space 1999
I knew I knew that name! Yes!
Awesome work
Glad to see you redoing this one, I think you've gone so deep with the latter episodes I really wanted to see you go that deep with the older who.
One of the very best Doctor Who documentarys I've seen. Brilliant work.
My version of the beginning portion would be set in 2005, my nan settling down on the sofa getting ready to watch the new series of Doctor who in April, unaware that her yet unborn grandkid would one day, not long from that day, would watch it alongside her in earnest.
This is outstanding. Beautifully written, delivered and presented. All the best with the series.
Thank you so much!
beyond just a UA-cam video now. If this was released on television as a full fledge doc I would still be amazing. Bravo lad!
These essays are literally the best Doctor Who related videos I’ve seen
Thanks for remaking this. So Good!
