The more I watch Troughton, the more I realize just how awesome he was. Let's face it, he makes The Three Doctors. He steals every scene he's in, just proving how vital he was in the success of the show.
Troughton's Doctor appealed to me because, of all the Doctors, he is the most kind and avuncular. His gentle, child-like and approachable character was an anchor around which I felt safe watching the monsters. I think my family watched DW from the first episode, but my age means that my earliest memory of watching the show live is a Troughton story (The Invasion), before becoming a regular viewer starting with Pertwee in 1970. I then later returned to discover Troughton again as an adult, probably largely due to the showing of The Krotons as a repeat on TV, and the release of The Seeds of Death on edited VHS tape (the first DW story on home video, I think) which I thought was great. Even though a few of his stories were a little lacklustre, Troughton's performance was always spot on. That said, the vast majority of his stories are superb and very rewatchable. I also adored the 1960s Cybermen. To me they were far more scary than the Daleks. Although it must be said that the two Troughton Dalek stories are superb. David Whitaker really knew how to write the Daleks as devious, sinister creatures. :-)
A quick thing to mention about The Enemy of the World is that Troughton actually plays "three" characters, in effect: the Doctor, Salamander, and the Doctor pretending to be Salamander, the third of which took subtlety by Troughton to make it clear to the viewer exactly which he was, without making the other characters in the scene look foolish that they couldn't tell this wasn't Salamander. :-)
Patrick Troughton is one of my favourite Doctors and it’s tragic that so many episodes are missing. My favourite stories would be The Tomb of the Cybermen, The Faceless Ones, Evil of the Daleks, Invasion, The Web of Fear, The Abominable Snowmen, Seeds of Death and The War Games.
I love Patrick Troughton's Doctor and Jamie is easily my favorite classic companion. Its hard to imagine the 2nd Doctor without him. That's the main reason I wish I could see The Highlanders. And thanks to the animations, I have almost every 2nd Doctor story minus a few.
You're lucky, in the 80s (before VHS, DVD, streaming or recovery of lost episodes) the only way I could appreciate the Troughton era was through Target novelisations (when I could find them!). A lot of his character is lost when you don't see him on screen.
I absolutely love how hesitant you are to criticise an episode! I totally agree with your opinions actually. I feel like some who fans really dislike most episodes! There are some dull episodes of course, and a few bad ones and some wierd ideas that don't work, but surely the whole point of being a fan of something is that you mostly love it! Haha
So true. I swear some "fans" re-watch and obsess over the shows they love so much to the point where they develop this weird toxic relationship with the show. Gatekeeping it and hating the very thing they once "loved" ...
I actually love Pat Troughton the more I watch him, & now by this time there are only a few of his stories awaiting hopefully eventual animation I think it's time to rewatch the Troughton era now it's as complete as it currently possibly can be.
Makes me sad to see Patrick's 😪 last interview the day before he passed seemed a down to earth 🌎 type of chap for a TIME LORD RIP 🙏🕯️ PATRICK TROUGHTON 🙏🕯️ cheers Stephen 🍀✌️✌️👍
Despite my watching The Abominable Snowmen as telesnaps, it still stands out to me as such a distinct and brilliant serial. Sometimes I lose my attention when watching Classic Who(often due to pacing), but I was glued to the screen
I loved your review of the Troughton era. I'm going through my first watch through of Classic Who and I can't express how much I fell in love with the Second Doctor. He almost instantly became my favorite Doctor ever. When I started, I thought all of the recons would turn me off and make it harder to enjoy, but that wasn't the case at all. It does hurt my heart that so many of the serials are missing or incomplete from his run. I do hope that more turn up at some point. Thank you for the review and I can't wait to watch the rest as i go through my Who journey!
Troughton was the first Doctor i ever saw, back in the early 2000s before the revival. i found his(at the time) "complete" run on VHS alongside a few Hartnell tapes at a library sale. Asked my parents to buy them for me, and ended up watching Tomb Of The Cybermen first. i was a fan from then on, and while i greatly enjoyed Hartnell too, i watched those precious few Troughton tapes over and over after school. He was a childhood hero to me and defined my love of the show from then on. He will always be my favorite, MY Doctor and i will always pine for more of his episodes to come back. I agree with you on wanting to see the Highlanders return especially, i think its some of his finest work.
Great video again the Troughton era is one of my personal favourites, not only that but it holds my favourite doctor who story of all time the invasion, I can not wait to see the pertwee era as it is my favourite doctor and era of the entire show keep up the great work
I was listening to your opinions on the some of the issues with Tomb and just wanted to offer my two cents. I think fiction is at it's best when it's not compared to real life. Whenever I watch Doctor Who and certainly classic episodes I try to forget about our world and it's issues and treat certain topics as a completely separate realm. Toberman wasn't treat differently because of his skin colour he was treated the way he was because he was unlike anyone else in the story. I'm glad now we live in an age where racism and sexism can be addressed and there's diversity in casting but it's important to remember times have changed and Today may as well be another world compared to the 1960s and in that time they probably thought the same about the pre war eras of the world. It took great tragedies for people to start treating people better. That's truth about the world we'll always remember. For example the wild west was only a hundred years ago. It's difficult to grasp but people will always react negatively to things we don't understand. Not everyone but some and that's the great learning curve of life. So when I watch old Who and you meet these horrible beings like Daleks or Cybermen or the state of society in the vengeance of varros and all the horrid characters we meet in between. I just think it's a universal issue that happens everywhere and it's not a reflection of our real world issues just a similar kind of stryfe. The doctor brings positive changes wherever he goes and I know from talking to many other fans he's influenced many of us to be kind and diverse and care and help other living creatures in our real lives as well as the people he met in the show. I'm sorry if none of that made sense. It's a tough subject really but I guess my point is that there's good and bad everywhere and it's up to you which you want to put out into the world. I've known pain and trauma in my life and I'm glad I had good role models like The Doctor to help me cope with that because it's made me the good man I am today. If you can help or be a force good for our world you have the moral obligation to do so. You'll find if you put good out it will always come back. The same works for the opposite side of the coin
I count myself very lucky that although I have part memories of some of the Hartnell stories, my first proper Who fandom was kindled by the Troughton Monster era. Thanks for a great review.
Wow really cool, patrick troughton is my favourite doctor. Nice too see some love for the space pirates I give it a 9/10 also love your animation of it for a few seconds
Truly impressive presentation, thank you! Season 4 is one of THE best. Experimental in many ways and often successful. Troughton's manic additions were more lively than his stoic later self. Even then, he never skips a beat. Moonbase looks great, but dialogue choices were as bad as cybermen using sand bags to wall up an atmospheric hole for the base. Faceless Ones is a hidden gem. Episodes 1 and 3 have a great feel. The animation does justice for the remaining parts. David Whitaker can't be beat for Dalek stories. He edited the script for the very first one and it shows.
Fun fact:The second doctor was actual first doctor to like Jelly Babies,he even said the line,”would you like a Jelly Baby?”,first, all the way back in the Three Doctors
@@turbodolf The height of racial tensions in my opinion, the new Labour government under Harold Wilson was pushing for greater integration (see Race Relations Act) while a healthy number of those on the right were skeptical of new immigrants from the Commonwealth, sometimes going into outright racist rhetoric.
Even though a lot of his stories are lost, I'm pleased we've had most of the missing ones animated. That way we get to do (after a fashion) what we can do with Pertwee's Doctor onwards: sit down and watch the stories in order. :-)
I go with the Master was BSing the Doctor since he’s known for doing that stuff. If the TC was a real thing, then it’s probably an extra dimensional parasite that alters the host’s memories. And as for Ruth, I’ll lean towards either being part of the parasite, or she’s the incarnation between 2 and 3, but not before 1.

I just watched the Underwater Menace, I was sad because I loved Hartnell but with this story I am starting to love Troughton too. I am lucky because I started to watch the Classics after they did an animation of this story (only 4 months ago) so I didn't need to watch reconstructions. It instantly became one of my favorite classic story, after The Dalek Invasion Of Earth and The Rescue. The only flaw which is the only reason it's not first : Polly is useless. But except that I love everything in this story. Edit : Now I watched seasons 4 and 5. Evil of the Daleks is second, and Web Of Fear is third (the fight scene between the soldiers and the yeti on the streets is PERFECT), Invasion Of Earth is still the best, the rescue is fourth and Underwater Menace is fifth.
My top 10 Troughton: 1- The War Games 2- Fury From The Deep 3- The Faceless Ones 4- Evil of the Daleks 5- The Abominable Snowmen 6- The Invasion 7- Power of the Daleks 8- The Seeds of Death 9- The Highlanders 10- The Web of Fear

Patrick Troughton is my four favourite doctor who I have learnt to approachate his version of doctor who alot more than I used to and I think the reason I learnt to approachate his version of the doctor more is because I stared to watch more second doctor stories and the animated second doctor stories on dvd and enjoyed the second Doctor more than I used to and sit down and watch more second doctor stories on dvd and online and just enjoy Patrick Troughton alot more as the second Doctor and enjoy Jamie and Zoe and Victoria and Ben and Polly are the monster and the bridgerder and the cybermen and the yets and everything about the second Doctors era and awhile ago i borough more second doctor stories on dvd
The War Games would have been a great ending had the series not continued. As it is, it forms about as good an ending for 1960s-style DW as we could possibly have had. :-)

Doctor and co stayed late in "Fury of the Deep"? I wonder if people complained about "Enemy of the World", when the TARDIS crew skipped out so early they left a bunch of people to die. It's one of the main reasons I don't like the Second Doctor.
Part of the reason so many villains are shown as incompetent, such as the Dominators, is due to more analysis of the Second World War. The years of amping up the Nazis to make victory seem more hard fought, was replaced with the realization that they were actually very incompetent. Many of their leaders were egocentric perverts and madmen, and the rest were just thugs. Some of this retrospection was brought on by a lot of pro-communist thinking among academics and the educated in the UK. The Soviets were seen as being somewhat intellectual, while the Americans were seeming more and more like the Nazis (this was the civil rights era). This attitude bled through into a lot of tv programming, to counter the macho shoot-first attitude of US tv. It was also somewhat down to declining British power, since if you can’t be one of the big boys then maybe the big boys seem somewhat ridiculous and misguided. In short, trying to “Dominate” rather than aim for peace and equality is something only very stupid and corrupt people could want.
Barely comprehensible babbling. If the "Nazis" were incompetent, they wouldn't have been able to take on the entire world for 6 years, as well as bring France to its knees, with the British army making a hasty escape at the Battle of Dunkirk.
I find tomb overrated because for 20 years the only Victoria you watched was tomb. Then again, it'll be the same for enemy of the world. I have a theory that tomb is set in an alternate universe hence why the tombs have a different design in attack of the Cybermen and people are still discriminatory.
It is being worked on. No idea when it'll be finished. Could be finished in a month, could be next year! It's definitely coming though - I'm just very rarely happy with anything I ever make and only upload stuff when I am!
Here are my raking for series 4 of doctor who with Patrick Troughton as the second Doctor number one the hinglander number two the evil of the daleks number three the falces ones number four the underwater mennis
Sorry to say but the 1960s Dr who are still my favourites if you won't bad who well its got to be 1970s and some of the 1980 plus 2000s Sorry but I'm a classic fan
The Mind Robbers actually has a sequel episode, with Six, Jamie and Zoe, “The Legend of the Cybermen” which is also a whole lot of fun. The whole thing is super imaginative and meta, with several gags you could only get away with in Audio.
I think I remember some of them but I was ONLY BORN IN 64lseenafew EPISODES OF THE FIRST DOCTOR IT PROBLLYWAS ON ABC AROUND 2004/5/6 I THINK IT WAS PROBLEY ON FOX TELL THEY ALL WAY'S TAKE THING'S OF FREE TV IREMMBER PETER CUSHION MOVIES WITH THE DALEKS I LIKED EVERY DR WHO OUT THERE TO THIS DAY WE ONLY NEED GOOD WRITERS THATS ALL IT'S NOT THE ACTORS WARREN AND INGRID FROM MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺😎👽😳😺
The BBC should hire Pixar to go back and redo all the animated episodes. Disney is desperate for money, after all their recent blunders. And I still think the "Female Doctor" is really the Rani, who swapped places with the Doctor at the moment of regeneration.
With the budget they have for missing episode animations I doubt the BBC could even afford a phonecall to Pixar I'm afraid!!! Hopefully the recent rumours about Smugglers and Underwater Menace are true and that the animations are coming back. Why the Rani? 13 acts nothing like the Rani would.
35:48 Jesus Christ dude! We watch reviews to HEAR WHAT HAPPENS IN THE SHOW! Enough with this "Im not going to tell you go watch it" bullshit. If I was going to watch it I wouldnt be pissing away hours listening to you talk about it FFS!!!!!
I have little or no fun watching Underwater Menace. Soooooo awful! Probably the True Worst of Doctor Who Story of All Time. Twin Dilemma has nothing on this one!
I've been looking forward to this...
are you going to do Doctors 6 through 15?
Which episode is that music in 1:06:14 from the Space pirates

Doctor and co stayed late in "Fury of the Deep"? I wonder if people complained about "Enemy of the World", when the TARDIS crew skipped out so early they left a bunch of people to die.
It's one of the main reasons I don't like the Second Doctor.
Troughton Pertwee & Tom Baker we’re the best!!!!
Great 👍 video
I don’t think you sound overly negative like you said you feel. I think you’re probably the most positive about Who stories even the worst ones.
I find tomb overrated because for 20 years the only Victoria you watched was tomb. Then again, it'll be the same for enemy of the world. I have a theory that tomb is set in an alternate universe hence why the tombs have a different design in attack of the Cybermen and people are still discriminatory.
Chaos. Pure chaos
William Hart had a double
It's British Redcoats not English redcoats.
Regarding "sexism" in the Tomb of the Cybermen, why do you assume that people will share present attitudes about gender roles in the future?
Because leftists are so arrogant that they do not realise they are in direct conflict with human nature.
Is part 3 coming soon??
Am I the only one who had a took a while to get used to Micheal Troughton as Two in the 2DAs?
The Mind Robbers actually has a sequel episode, with Six, Jamie and Zoe, “The Legend of the Cybermen” which is also a whole lot of fun. The whole thing is super imaginative and meta, with several gags you could only get away with in Audio.
(Technically it’s part of a Main Range Trilogy with the previous two stories, but Legend is the standout.)
Have the space pirates and the celestial toy maker on cd audio.cant be helped bbc destroying the footage.

I've seen the Macra and can prov......😮 um nevermind 😐
