These videos are so well made! Love them!
Peter Davison was a good solid version of the Doctor and, was perfectly well suited for the early 1980’s.

It's great that you single out the Mara as a villain that could return in new Who, before she was name-checked in series 14. Loving these videos!

You have quite a skill for research. These are wonderful videos. You’ve taken a potentially dull subject of ratings and really jazzed it up. I’m keen to watch more videos. You have a new viewer for sure 🙂

Adam, these vids are fantastic. The Davison era was my first - and favourite. I know a lot of these ratings figures from pouring over articles in Doctor Who bulletin in the late 80s, but it’s great to revisit.

I was in my early teens when Peter Davidson took over, he was so different from Tom Baker, but I liked him (watched him in All Creatures Great and Small, so was already familiar with him) and I thought his portrayal of the Doctor was pretty good. As for the companions, I only really liked the original line up, I always found Turlough a bit confusing, as he is supposed to be a high school boy of about 16/17 (but from a different planet), but looked in his twenties, so I found his school uniform costume a bit silly, and I thought Peri was annoying. Warriors of the Deep is alway referred to as one of the worst, I’ve always had a soft spot for it, reasons, it’s got monsters and two Horror movie actors, Ingrid Pitt from The Vampire Lovers and The Wicker Man and Ian McCulloch from Zombie Flesh Eaters and Zombie Holocaust.

Great vid. Regarding Mawdryn Undead part 1. I lived in Milton Keynes and the Sandy Heath transmitter broke down and that meant we didn't get part one....apart from the final scene. That will have have some impact on the ratings

This is the only doctor I have met in person. It was at a convention here in Canada and I have to say he could not have been a nicer person

An idea for the next episode of The Ident Review.
ITV 2013 Idents (all of them) Maybe do them in separate parts, Adam.

This idea of the rescheduling to weekdays partly being because the BBC was testing the ground for a new soap (EastEnders) is not accurate. They already had a soap going out on weekday evenings at the time, Triangle, so could monitor viewing habits much more reliably from that than from Doctor Who. By the time of Season 21, plans for EastEnders were firmly in place, and weeknights viewing habits were being watched very closely, but this had nothing to do with 1982 scheduling, which was partly inspired by the success of Sapphire and Steel on ITV in a bi-weekly weeknight slot.

I say having Dr Who moved from saturday teatime, to twice a week was absolutely stupid and it wrapped the series up within 3 months instead of within 6 or 7 months. When dr 6 came in the series went back, to saturday like when it first came out on tv in the early 1960s and also it would stupidly be moved again from Saturday to been on during the week but only on once a week either on a Monday or alternatively on a Wednesday night instead of been shown on its traditional Saturday teatime slot and IMO that is largely what in the end killed off Dr Who for many long years after 26 years of been on television but given how classic Dr Who was ended in the late 1980s when I started my 20s I am not in retrospect sorry that Dr Who went off television when it did like it did. I also will say that Dr Who, has really not returned and when programmes end it is wise to leave them dead and gone never remake them because it does not bloody work.

I know what you mean. Whilst a lot of fans remain (understandably) incensed about the cancellation crisis, I don't. I just feel like the show was long overdue its time by then, and certainly was no longer the same show I'd once loved anymore (maybe The Five Doctors was the last time it still was, and even that was kind of an anomaly).
I do think the erratic scheduling played a big part in the ratings decline, but I also suspect that the writing and characterization of the Doctor had seriously weakened and so audiences who'd remembered Tom Baker, began to look elsewhere for their heroes.
As for the 2005 RTD revival, I think someone said it best when they said the revival was like Buffy's mum in the episode Forever. That Doctor Who had come back *wrong* somehow.

Thought the new one had a great run with Eccleston, Tennant, and Smith.
