Perhaps, one day, I can save up 800 dollars. And then, I will finally be able to buy a computer that can run VR. Then, 800 dollars more, and I can actually get a headset for said VR.

+sebasifas I don't know what he has, but he's not that far off nonethess. Mine is below. You can certainly go cheaper than this if you do a little more research + these components were bought over the course of the last 2 or 3 years. Only the graphics card was upgraded about a year ago. The rest or equivalents thereof (performance wise) could have become cheaper by now. These are just the prices I bought them at (only the power suply was at a discount iirc...).

NOTE these prices DO INCLUDE TAX, so no extra hidden cost - this was ordered from within the Netherlands from a dutch store. Knowing that tech at least used to be cheaper in the US in my experience I would imagine these prices are an overestimation of what you would pay for the same system in the US.
You can probably save money by going for a cheaper motherboard or even using your old one - be sure to check whether it has the right sockets for the processor though, and any other functionality you might want. Additionally buying an AMD processor and GPU instead of intel and Nvidia will save you some precious money as well. In the end you would probably near the $800 mark he mentioned. If you keep an eye out for discounts and just collect your components piece by piece you can probably even get as low as €600-700. Building a cheap high performing computer just needs time and a lot of reading/research comparing the pros and cons of components to get the best deals - and a lot of people are not willing to do this so they claim a cheap high performing PC doesn't exist. But the fact is, they do.
I'm not including a screen, mouse and keyboard or any of that other peripheral stuff here because you most likely do not need to buy these. You should already have those - although it can't hurt to double check whether your monitor can even handle what the GPU could potentially give you (if you care about that..).

ca. € 50-80: Some Internal hard drive, but you most likely can use the one you already have for storage. I'm using two old ones from previous PCs for storage and 'old' games. A first glance at my computer hardware store tells me you can get 500GB - 1TB internal HDs for around €50. SSD is recommended for most newer games though unless you don't mind somewhat longer loading times (which is ok, to each their own).
Some extra fans to keep your hardware cooled - the prices range from cheap to expensive, but the cheaper ones are good enough (do you own research). a couple extra at €10 a piece or so are fine in my experience.

I think it's funny that the speaker thinks fresnel lenses are what makes you see in 3D. Does your eyes have their own fresnel lenses? No they dont. Yet you can see in 3D.
I came to the comments because of that... comment.
The Fresnel lense is what allows you to see 3D on the Vive. Doesn't mean its the only lense that does so. Its just what happens to distort the Light on this particular device.

? Stereoscopic Displays aren't what allows you to see 3D if that's what you're getting at. You Need a Lens to bend/distort the light away from your eyes.
An easy way to test this is by closing one of your eyes, the eye remaining open will still see a 3D image.
So yes, the Fresnel lens is what allows you to comprehend 3D in Vr. Also, yes your eye does function as a lens, its called your Cornea and what sits behind it is actually called the "lens" so there's that.
If anything its the Combination of lenses and binocular disparity that allows us to see 3D.

mine arrived yesterday and I'm blown away. Better than I hoped and played for 6 hours on just two games! Going back to 2D games felt old. The future is bright.

You will love it! I have had mine since the 2ed week of april and the only reason I don't use it every day is it does not yet have a game as good as CS GO. However there are lots of fun games out right now (I really love multiplayer games, and most vr games are single player atm.) in the next year, the games that come out for it will be amazing including fallout 4 with dedicated VR support!

a) It's not the lenses that allow you to see 3D, but the fact that you get two different pictures from slightly offset view points for your two eyes, also known as stereoscopy... the lenses, AFAIK, are necessary because without them the screens would just be a blurry mess thanks to being so close to your eyes and their inability to properly focus on that distance. Just put a finger roughly 5 or 6cm away from either one of your eyes and try to focus on that.
b) It's really sad you didn't even mention the Half-Life series when talking about Valve's games... and calling Steam infamous is a bit of a stretch, IMO.

I personally have the Rift, though I played on both vr systems. I only got the Rift because it was on sale, not because it was the better one. They both have their pros and cons. They both have tracking, but the vive has all you need to start playing right away. If you want to have tracking on the rift like the vive, you need 3 if not 4 sensors so you can turn around in games and not glitch around. You will still have a lot of space to move around but only differs a few square feet from the vive. The Rift is lighter and already has headphones on them. The rift is also more, move friendly so if you wish to have a vr that you could take to a friends house, its not a huge hassle. Last but not least, the rift is by far faster setting up. It takes me about 5-10 minutes where as the vive takes around 45 minutes.
Several more places have demo units. I played Space Pirate Trainer at the Galleria Mall in Roseville, CA last night. I'm sold on this.

Yeah, I have a Rift personally, and I'm dying for Oculus Touch. Some days I wish I'd have gotten a Vive over my Rift. Oh well, both HMDs are incredible
Tried Vive at my son's last Sunday. It was on order on Wednesday bundled with a Nvidia GTX 1070GPU!
Bonus fact: Unity made another VR game that released for PSVR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive: SUPERHOT VR. This was a collaborative between Unity and the SUPERHOT Team.
Beat saber is literally the best vr game.
Fact 108: HTC Vive is a virtual reality headset...
You unfortunately missed the "hidden" extra usb port you can use in the headset. The plastic panel that the cables pass through can be pushed forward and you will find an empty usb recessed enough for most regular usb plugs to fit down in. Great for usb gaming headsets.

Got the Vive... truly impressive. Very satisfied, impresses everyone I show. Entertainment Choices: I'm no artist but Tilt Brush is addictive - but you do have to be willing to spend time and just get use to it. Same with Fantastic Contraption which can be both challenging and physical. VRidio and Within, 2 VR 360VR movie pervayers have some impressive free VR videos. Some take your breath away. Overall: definitely 21st century.

Got my new GPU (Nvidia GTX 1070) and Vive yesterday!! HTC bundled them and saved me $200. Flippin' awesome!! Mildly disappointed that "No Man's Sky" is not supported.
The batteries on the Vive controllers last several days on a single charge.

My htc vive is one of my most prized possessions, got it £100 off on Black Friday
I'm actually pretty close to canceling my Vive order due HTC's horrible customer service. I was supposed to receive mine a month ago and every time I call, I get told something different ("you'll definitely receive it before April 30th," "it will definitely get shipped out before April 30th," "be patient," "you have to call this other number," etc.). I'm now more annoyed about the Vive than I am excited to experience it.

Depends on your GPU. Though it's unlikely you can run it since alienwares are trash.
