  • Tina, Dan, Tasneem and Ella share their experiences of grief. If you’ve been bereaved, you might find that there are some things you can relate to. But you might find that your experience is different - and that’s OK too.

7:45 The saying that one`s heart is broken feels very literally when it happens to you. You literally feel your heart breaking into pieces. With hard work, you can try to patch it together piece by piece. Then, when you survive the worst crisis, you still feel that your heart is only "stitched together". Eventually, when you`ve done enough inner work, there comes the time when you feel your heart as a whole organ again. Everybody goes through this process very differently and nobody has the right to lecture you about how long it takes to feel whole again.
When it happened to me, I couldn`t believe how real this saying was.
It took me 5 years and a whole lot of work to feel that my heart was in its normal one-piece state again.

    How does grief feel?
It hurts. It causes literal pain. You feel like you are suffocating. Imagine being force-choked. Clawing at your throat trying to get air, but there isn't a physical object or person suffocating you so there isn't a thing you can do. Every signal your brain is firing off is screaming "gotta breathe. Can't breathe. Gotta breathe. Can't breathe" over and over and over. Fear responses kick in, which is why people become violent (fight), run away (flight), collapse (freeze/play dead) or laugh/think your joking (friend).

You can feel it in your heart. My Mum went in for heart surgery one month ago yesterday and died one month ago tomorrow. My heart hurt the whole time and has not stopped hurting since.

The heart break and not being to be able to breathe - you don’t know it until it hits. Mine hit too at two years after a divorce. I’m cracked.

Thank you for making this video, it gives me comfort knowing that my feelings are normal. Last 2017 i lost my mom to diabetes, then 2018 my husband died of a brain aneurysm. After 2.5 years i was able to accept their passing and move on with my life. However, just when everything in my life was falling into place, 2 weeks ago my dad passed away due to covid. So i am going through the grieving process again, and you never really get used to it.

I once read that grief is like a glove with nowhere to go.
How grief feels is a very good question.
The thing is that I think there is no one right answer to it.
It is such an individual and such a personal experience that everyone can go through it in a different way and in a different pace.

I tried to commit suicide in November 2020 by stepping off a 45ft bridge and to this day, the emotional side of what happened can sometimes outweigh the physical impacts. Both of my feet shattered into pieces and since then, it feels as if my entire world has flipped upside down. I feel scared, I feel numb, I feel broken inside. The surgeon said that my feet will never be as they were because they were too badly damaged. Dosent stop me wanting them how they were so I guess that's a form of grief and loss because your grieving a part of your body. And these feelings of being "heart-broken", I feel that, it feels like everyone is about a mile away. It feels like your heart has just shattered with sadness and despair. And with an injury, the grief hurts so much of your own body, it hurts so so much.

One month ago, I lost both my mom and my dad due to Covid while fighting for my life in the hospital too. They died in different hospitals on the same day at almost the same hour. I am still in shock. I wish I could cry to release at least some of the pain, but I can`t.
I know my case is no exception. The people who created this disease in their labs managed to destroy millions of people`s lives and families.
