You guys didn’t mention it but Wish didn’t get shortlisted for Song either, Wish will be the first Disney musical to miss an Original Song nomination since Mulan in 1998.
The songs from Wish sucked, so I’m glad they’re not on the shortlist. I’m also glad none of the songs from The Little Mermaid remake got short listed. Those songs sucked too. It would be embarrassing if The Scuttlebutt got nominated.
I really would love to see Godzilla Minus One make the final list for Visual Effects. The fact that the movie looks SO good on such a tiny budget is absolutely mind-blowing. Of course it might not get in for much more stuff, since the Oscar crowd usually has their favorites picked out LONG before Minus One came out. I’d at least like to see it get in for that.
They can actually nominate 3 songs again from a movie, but only 2 can be by the same writer, so Barbie would qualify for 3 songs. They changed the rule again.
You didn’t take a look at the Animated Short Shortlist but TheBrave Locomotive is gone too. Got a huge following for capturing Disney’s old cartoon’s heart, and ironically now left the opening for Once Upon aStudio to go all the way in.
'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' is actually one of the reasons for Barbenheimer. Nolan had an agreement with Universal that Universal won't premiere any of their movies within a certain amount of time before and after Nolan's movies. Universal wanted to have digital release of 'Last Voyage' (if it fails in theaters) right before the Labour Day while being able to have 'Oppenheimer' still in theaters during Labour Day - so, they only had one possible option for Oppenheimer premiere.
I honestly wish that Diane Warren was banned from being nominated at this point. The Best Original Song category is constantly throwing away a nomination slot. From the last 9 years of the Oscars, Diane Warren has filled 8 of those years. It's essentially a 4 nominee category at this point. I'm genuinely sick and tired about it.
I think they feel pressure to keep nominating her because she’s never won. But, as another UA-camr pointed out, she keeps losing because she’s doing songs for movies no one cares about. It’s a vicious cycle
@@TheDreamingJuneyou would think if that were the case they would’ve actually given her an award by now, instead of just 14 nominations where she loses to someone else
I'm totally in the opposite camp: I think Wes Anderson in short film is one of the biggest locks of the Oscars this year. Not only did it get rave reviews across the board (with some saying it's among his best work), but even with their tendency to gatekeep from time to time, they're not exactly adverse to star power, either (Steven Wright, Brendan Gleeson, and Riz Ahmed have all directed and/or starred in winning films in this category, and Kobe Bryant won Best Animated Short, as well). And with John Travolta, Ben Whishaw, David Oyelowo, AND Pedro Almodóvar, Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal all directing or starring in shortlisted shorts this year, this year is especially star-studded. Also, to me it seems like what they gatekeep is when, say, a Taylor Swift submits a long-form music video into the category; someone who they feel may not deserve it from a filmmaker perspective. But Wes Anderson is the epitome of a well-respected filmmaker, and at the same time, it's also not a guarantee (based on his last few polarizing, divisive films) that he'll be making bangers decades from now like a Scorsese or Spielberg. This could be their best chance to honor one of the most influential filmmakers of the last 25-30 years, and I think they'll take it.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of Voyage of the Demeter because the script really let that movie down. But that was such a well made and well acted movie and I’m glad it’s got shortlisted for one of the techs. I thought the lighting, sound and set design was also very good.
even tho voyage wasnt the most well received film im just happy to see horror representation hopefully its actually considered for a nom and isnt just like crimes of the future last year only making it onto the shortlist and being immediately forgotten
"The Last Voyage of the Demeter" was quite good. Felt very reminiscent of "Alien" and "The Thing" in terms of its approach, and the creature effects are gnarly enough. Would make a worthy nominee.
I'm very upset Priscilla & Barbie did not make Makeup & Hairstyling just because The Academy likes transformative prosthetics for like Maestro, Oppenheimer, Poor Things, Ferrari, or like Golda. Past Lives not making Best Score is upsetting, but now I'm worried it'll miss other categories too.
The International Feature Oscar is one of my things, so I travelled hundreds of miles on an overnight coach to attend a film festival in order to watch the Lithuanian submission Slow. It won awards at Sundance and I thought it was one I NEEDED to see. Since I'd put in the time and expense I also checked out the other films that were in the same screen that day. I didn't think much of the new Hamaguchi and the Swedish awkward humour film was not to my taste, but the first film I saw was Bhutan's The Monk and The Gun. I ended up really liking it, to the extent it was my favourite film of the day over Slow. This surprises me, because I didn't like Lunana as a film and thought it should have been disqualified the year it was nominated because Bhutan had tried to submit it the year before. I walked out of the cinema thinking "It's a shame that won't get shortlisted when Lunana did" I'm glad to be proved wrong. Kokomo City not even being on the shortlist is an absolute travesty.

Assuming it gets nominated, I think POOR THINGS is your Best VFX winner. This category usually favors Best Picture nominees or films that came close to getting it (including pre-release Oscar buzz).
Why do the Academy constantly choose Best Picture nominees to win? Why can’t other films have a chance to win like super hero films? Hugo undeservingly won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was more deserving.
They usually have a problem to give an Oscar for visual effects to a film with the underwhelming critical reception. That said, Godzilla Minus One has a great chance here (and would definitely be more deserving than Poor Things).
Great vid, hoping that you’re not discrediting the quality of The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar and that you are moreso alluding to the fact that Wes Anderson is a high quality filmmaker that deserves to be recognized in “above the line” categories. I think that does discredit short films though which have been better in recent years than several Best Picture nominees even - this year included as the 10th spot could fit nicely into the open 10th slot (something the Academy will, unfortunately, not go for). That said, this is some of the best work he’s ever done. On par with The Grand Budapest Hotel, Fantastic Mr Fox, and, if you liked it as much as I did, Asteroids City. His golden globes speech for winning Best Original Screenplay for TGBH is probably the best Golden Globes speech I’ve seen. I hope he has his moment and his speech will be incredible.

I just listened to the 15 songs shortlisted, which was good, since I needed the reminder regarding the Flora and Son songs (which I was able to place within the film immediately, I forgot how much I liked Meet in the Middle when I first heard it), though most of the rest sounded like a lot of songs that have been nominated in the past (the Asteroid City and Killers of the Flower Moon songs are exceptions... both of those are pretty wild inclusions), and it made me kind of bitter that Camp Isn't Home from Theater Camp missed the shortlist (that would have been a pretty unique nominee). Does anyone know when the above-the-line shortlist comes out?
There's no shortlist for the other categories at the Oscars. Just the nominations now which are Jan 23rd. There's the BAFTA longlists too, which are Jan 5th.
@@leandrocordeiro3739 oh okay, thank you for letting me know about the shortlist
Damn they snubbed the peaches song 😢
Golda is definitely getting nominated for make up!
I'm disappointed that the Chilean candidate "The Settlers" isn't on the list for best foreign language film. Excellent movie.
I'm honestly shocked that "I Am" by Stan Walker from the movie Origin isn't shortlisted. It's worth listening.
Guardians 3 not bring in Makeup and Hairstyling is just stupid
How is Godzilla minus one not shortlisted for international feature?
It was not submitted by Japan. Perfect Days was. One country can only submit one film.
@@pb.j.1753 that was wrong on their part
@@MovieFanZ89 That was smart on their part, watch Perfect days, try something that has no action in it for once.
@@MovieFanZ89 Why? What is wrong with Perfect Days
@@pb.j.1753 Godzilla Minus One is my favorite movie of the year so far and I thought it would be awesome to see it get nominated for international film
