    They used to make really great choices before such as nominating First Cow, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, The Master, Uncut Gems, etc. for stuff but I have to say they have GREATLY regressed in the last few years where they just outright refuse to nominate anything that isn't firmly on the bubble and its a huge problem. These are not critics picks by any means and their ignorance toward indie and international films is awful to witness.

      I agree. First off let me say this. I am a proud trans woman. All year I have been hyping up the best trans film, Monica, and the best lead actress performance of the year, Trace Lysette in Monica. I was so happy that Trace Lysette and the film were making a strong Oscar push, making the rounds on the news shows and daytime talk shows like The View and The Kelly Clarkson Show, heck Trace Lysette and the film even had an Academy, with Q & A, screening for members of the Academy to attend. As far as reviews go, the film and Trace Lysette got absolutely glowing paise from almost everyone who saw the film, especially critics who adored the film. That being said, as far as award shows go, outside of the Independent Spirit Awards and maybe the Oscars, it seems like, to major award nominnating bodies, the film and Trace Lysette’s groundbreaking performance is just nonexistent. Keep in mind these are the same nominnating bodies that have, in the past, easily given nominations or awards to cis actors or actresses for playing a trans woman.

      @Emmathelady I agree with everything you said. This is a strong year in Lead Actress, so if the film Monica simply didn’t make the cut, that’s one thing. But I’d be willing to bet money that the large majority of voters didn’t even bother to watch the film. And that’s another indictment against them.

    It is almost comical how we referred to “Anatomy of A Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” - two of the greatest films of the year - as “wild cards”. Meanwhile, the critics choice outright refused to even consider them as cards. Hopefully, Neon and A24 will be able to replicate what happened with “Triangle of Sadness” last year - went well with the LAFCA, lost it all come critics choice, but ultimately won at Oscar nomination morning.

      @@gabrielcastaneda9700 I honestly am predicting both right now. It might as well be hubris, but I think Gerwig gets snubbed - just like Nolan for Inception - thus giving Triet the nomination. Although, I’d love to see both women get in - not because of their sex, mind you, but because both did some of my favourite films of the year - it’s highly unlikely. Meanwhile, I can’t fathom Cooper getting it. I think the branch will see he’s trying too hard and there are better contenders outside of the US-British system. Haynes would be great, but seeing as he lost nominations at the Globes and critics - both places he got in for Carol - it’s very unlikely. Payne I enjoy, but again can’t see it. He might be empowered by the critic’s nomination to get the DGA - too close to call. I think Glazer is fourth and fifth is a fight between Song, Gerwig and Triet. All could get in, but my heart says Triet, just because Anatomy is my favourite film of the year - from what I’ve seen.

    It is fascinating to me how Critics Choice and Golden Globes seem to have swapped reputations ever since GG changed its voting body and what not; GG nominations have become increasingly more interesting, international, and more Film Twitter-esque, while CC has been increasingly more “general Oscar predictions” and GoldDerby-esque, with mostly American films. If you told me in GG’s dark year (2020) that people would celebrate their nominations more than CC in three years, I would have been skeptical, but here we are.

    Here’s the crazy thing too about Barbie’s record 18 nominations: If you remove the nominations that the Oscar literally can’t nominate themselves (Comedy, Young Actor/Actress, Cast Ensemble, and a third Original Song), that’s STILL the record matching 14 nominations that EEAAO and Shape of Water got. We might literally have a Barbenheimer match-off at the Oscars this year.

    • @ryanleclair1023
      @ryanleclair1023 6 місяців тому +13

      I agree completely. It’s funny to see how many people are saying “well it only beat the record because of the 3 songs” when that is clearly not the case. And if you only count the Oscar eligible nominations at CC for the other 2 movies, Shape of Water got 13 and EEAAO got 12. So Barbie’s 14 Oscar-eligible nominations is still a record-breaker no matter how you look at it. At this point no one can argue this bodes extremely well for its prospects as an undeniable contender for BP at the Oscars.

    It still gives me a chuckle when the boys read the nominations, clearly it's in alphabetical order and guesses names that clearly went past the letters already announced. 😅
    Like in Best Picture, it started with American Fiction and ended with Poor Things with 1 more nomination left and Cole circled back to Air and May December as guesses.
    In Best Actress they do it by last name, so it started with Gladstone yet Cole is still hopeful for Barrino when it sailed past letters A-F already.
    Other categories may be difficult to pick up snubs if you don't know the last names like in Cinematography or Production Design of which I am not familiar with.
    At times they can recognize the pattern of the nominations but due to excitement they will often forget it which actually leads to funny reactions of snubs.

    The Critics Choice Awards need to remind themselves what they bring to the table that the other organizations don't (those left-field but deserving nods they were so great at) and stop trying to predict the Oscars. They seem to have forgotten that we love them most when they reach out and pluck the underdogs.

    As others have said, these are just remarkably punditified. No Howerton or McAdams, no Spiderverse or Boy and the Heron in anything ATL, or even any international films in picture.
    Now all that being said, does this high level of uninspiration actually reduce their impact on the race? Or does it mean there's just less of a springboard for long-shot competitors to sneak their way in?

    • @Jose-sx4ql
      @Jose-sx4ql 6 місяців тому +1

      from what I understand Critics and Globes have never had an impact on the Oscar race which is why everyone is so mad at CCA this year, because they usually give love to good movies or performances that are too underappreciated to be true contenders or not as mainstream, (like Are you there god? it's me Margaret, all of us strangers, spiderverse, Fair Play, Society of the Snow, The Iron Claw, Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall, May/December to some degree and even Saltburn), but instead this year they decided to nominate the movies we all know are the most likely to get noms come Oscar morning, I believe the true precursors have always been Baftas and SAG along with all the other guilds.

    • @devdanferguson7616
      @devdanferguson7616 6 місяців тому

      @@Jose-sx4ql That's not true at all. While voter overlap is lower than the other precursors, they are still important to the race. Both offer platforms for competitors to kickstart their awards season with the first televised awards, and CCA can be indicative of what critics are pushing to get voter attention. So yes, it is a failure on the CCA's part both for the sake of rewarding underappreciated works, and for awarding critic's choices.

    I'm going to have a difficult time watching the videos this season if it's going to be a bunch of Saltburn bashing.😅It's my 2nd favorite of the year so far, after All of Us Strangers. I've seen it 4 times. After the first viewing, I was a little worried it might not be as much fun on repeat viewings. Since a big part of it is not knowing where it's heading. But honestly, I've enjoyed it more on repeat viewings. I'm always finding different aspects to appreciate. And it's been a lot of fun bringing people and watching them experience it for the first time. Why does a movie have to be deep to be great? The movie is a wickedly funny blast that happens to be very well done. I'm happy Critic's Choice recognized the cinematography and production design. It's easily my favorite of the year in both of those categories, and if there was any justice in the world it would be a shoo-in for those categories at the Oscars. I don't love Saltburn as much as Promising Young Woman, but Emerald Fennell has absolutely upped her filmmaking game. Barry Keoghan and Rosamund Pike should be in the awards conversation. Keoghan is brilliant and Pike is a scene-stealer. Anyway, I fail to see the issue with one awards body showing this some love. Why do they all have to nominate the same things? Saltburn is likely not getting any nominations at the Oscars. It's not their kind of movie. The Zone of Interest will be in Picture and Director there. So it's nice to see it showing up elsewhere.

      I'm with you completely. EEAAO broke all those "conventional Oscar movie" standars and now is the same with Barbie and Poor Things. Why wouldn't Saltburn be an Oscar film? It doesn't make any sense. Barry (of courseeee) Pike and Alison Oliver would be a perfect combo for nominations... That said, if we have EEAAO, Barbie and Poor Things, horror films need to be a thing as well...

Guys, Bradley Cooper is taking his kid to red carpets now and selling sandwiches... The guy is desperate. That type thing of "campaigning" is dull and I hope doesn't make an impact for the mayor awards. This is a very good year in film to just go with the "better campaign" choice instead of the quality.
