The French version of this song made me love this song and musical even more. I absolutely love the French language :)

Thanks ! French has been designed to be well-balanced, between Italian and German for its pronunciation as well as its accuracy. It seems the result is quite satisfactory, but in the end too hard too be learnt for an everyday use on an international large scale. That's why english is now the international language (yet French is still alive in diplomacy and cultural fields) as it is less complicated and more easy to be sufficently mastered. It has its "more" and "less" too...

      What the heck man ?
"Designed to be well balanced between italian and german", please, what are you even saying ?

    • @jpc7118
      @jpc7118 2 роки тому

    • @foxanol
      @foxanol Рік тому

    1991 Lyrics:
Doux Seigneur, Que vous ai-je fait,
    Pour que plus je tombe,
Et plus vous me laissiez tomber?
    Ivre du bonheur d'être libre.
    Mais les loups rôdent dans la nuit;

      Translation:
Dear Lord, what did I do to You?
Why did I fall? And You let me fall further?
I had a dream of a heart so big,
Where mine would find its place,
      To share happiness.
Dear Lord, what did I do to You?
I dreamed a dream of another life,
When my life passed by like a dream,
I was prepared for all the antics,
For all the passions that would arise.
Then I was young, where was the harm?
I dreamed to laugh, to love, to live.
To dance until the end of the ball.
Too intoxicated with happiness to be free.
But the wolves came in the night,
And one of them found my trail.
      I satisfied their appetite,
And gave myself to the first thief that passed,
He grew accustomed to my life.
I grew accustomed to his presence,
And then, one day, he disappeared,
And stole my childhood away too.
Sometimes I still dream of him,
That he regrets and begs forgiveness,
But this dream fades away at dawn,
Just as the lamps do after a party.
I had a dream of another life,
That would begin as mine is ending,
So different now from what it seemed.
But life has killed the dream I dreamed.

@M. S. There are two French versions: the original French version upon which the English version was based, and a newer French version which is based upon the English version. The original French lyrics, translated, start "I had dreamed of another life / but life has shot down my dreams / like one stifles the last cries / of an animal which one slaughters. / I had dreamed of a heart so big / that mine could within it find a place, / but my first 'prince charming' / was the assassin of my childhood."

The translation was not that bad! You missed the implication of "plus" in the introduction, that she believed God would "never" let her fall. Otherwise, solid job, and glad to have it online to share. The French lyrics have way more references to the Christian faith that exists in the novel, and more depth overall, as is true pretty much throughout the French concept album's lyrics vs. the English.
    Good!

I don't know the full story of this song, but it started as a French song (closer to the Hugo original??) in1980 - it was then reworked as an English song, with different ideas, forming the West End show we all know. This song which was then retranslated back into French which is sung here. And you have now translated in back into English again, as far as I understand!

  • @amyrakoff5839
    @amyrakoff5839 2 роки тому +1

The lyrics are more powerful in French because that's how it was originally. The translation is really good but there are differences. My mothers first language is french and she heard the English and then experienced the french. The difference us that the french one is a lot harder and the lyrics mire devastatingly sad which is why I'm so glad that they put the word for word lyrics for the french as it makes the characters plee more desperate . The English is still a second to best translation. 👌

I have the French concept album, I to like it better in its original voice. Now that there’s been the American movie of it, does France plan at all to do it in French? That’d be sweet. Makes me meditate on when my ancestors spoke French. Last family members to do so, my gg grandparents. Metis and Québécois fur trader. I did take it in school. Along with Spanish. People often ask me if I just came over! Due to our French Canadian spelling. I’m like nope!

I was surprised that the lyrics were that different...but I guess it gets the same meaning across.

I feel that quite a lot of the sentiments are lost in the translation to English. Like the part when she sang about the wolves, and that one of them caught their scent. Only when listening to this did I realised the wolf referred to that guy. Okay maybe I'm just slow, but when listening to the English version I always though the tigers always just refer to general hardships in life. The french version to me emphasized more on the lost of innocence.

You might as well translate "folies" as "follys", since it has pretty much the same sense in English.

This one is good also in french, probably better than english...do you hear the people sing is very very better in english instead especially for the words...but is only my opinion...

I prefer "Sweet Lord " as written as to Dear Lord. I think it better captures the 19th century french.

The French version seems a LOT more religious than the English version? No? 😳

The first part of the song maybe. She is actually praying. But after that she sings about stolen childhood, innocence, a dream of an other life. Nothing religious
