Love it! While I do appreciate the insane technique and skill of good non-metallic metal painting, I've always thought it made the minis look like cartoon characters instead of anything that could exist in the real world. So it's always going to be metallic paints for me.
NMM is awesome in photographs. It handles lighting predictably. TMM or just regular metallic paint is almost always better IRL, unless you're pulling a James Wappel and literally painting the reflected scene into your helmets.
I've generally found the opposite! I'm not an expert on nmm by any means, but I find you can make it look less shiny and stand out less from the rest of the paint job, while still selling the metal look. I love using both styles in different settings though.
After watching your videos for over a year I finally bought my first few model kits and started an imperial fist army about 2 weeks ago. It’s been a blast so far thank you for being my first introduction to these dope little pieces of plastic.
FFS. I’m 4 days into a sunny 2-week holiday and now you’ve got me itching to be back in pissing down Cardiff just so I can try some of these bases out. Damn you, Guy!
Number 7 - Contrast Tinting is my go to for metallics over large areas. In addition to Iyanden Yellow you can also use light browns contrast paints to make brass or bronze effects as well.
I just do the metallic paint and use bascilum grey contrast to add some detail, then five-seven quick dips of water with bascilum grey in the brush for a wash
Would love to see more models painted like the old black stone fortress series. Regardless thank you for all the great stuff you’ve put out over the years
I just love using contrasts for gold. I use a pearl silver metallic and bad moon yellow to make an absolutely striking gold, add a little brown wash on it to really make it pop
Was just thinking of starting sisters and getting some knights to support them, this will be a massive help for achieving an ancient zealot knight faction. Thanks Guy :D
Just bought the metallic Liquitex inks, and accidentally bought two bottles of bronze, so there is a LOT of metal painting in my future, this is well timed!
When it comes to brass/bronze verdigris, I've found that the technical paint "Nihilakh Oxide" works great for minimal verdigris, and any matte finish teal or jade acrylic paint works great for heavy verdigris.
I plan on making a space marine squad that is kinda kill team, and i picture them being on something like a space hulk, so i will definetley rewatch this video once it’s time to paint them and figure out how i want to paint the bases
My favorite's got to be 5:38 I've always been a big fan of the "metallic base, contrast over it" to make colored metals! It's become the main theme for my admech army :D
Great vid as always Guy but my one hint is when you mentioned candy apple red. Over silver is good but if you put bloodletter red contrast over a bright gold metallic (like Auric or many just a little deeper) it's amazing candy apple
Add this, black mate primer, drybrush with citadel castellan green, before drybrush with citadel iron hands steel but very softly, wash it with citadel agrax earthshade, to finish, drysbrush only a little bit of the edges with citadel runefang steel, the finish is like a classic military ammo case. Saludos desde Mexico! sorry for my bad english xd
I like the gold method. I'm doing some golden carapace tyranids, and while the method is too involved to do for every tiny little nid, I'll try it on my next larger monster model!
I use inks a lot, not just for metallic areas. They're amazing, and can often offer opacity for brighter colours that no paint can hope to match. Anybody thinking of using them, give them a try. Just be aware that they have very little durability, so a coat of varnish at the end is absolutely essential if you're going to be handling your figures at all.
@@aceofspades9503 I usually buy Daler Rowney, but simply because they're widely stocked in art shops around me. Liquitex or Winsor & Newton are also fine if they're easier for you to find.
I’ve been working on the shatter point core box and not sure what to do for the bases. Definitely going to go with the contrast tinting approach! Thanks

That's actually exactly why I've used nmm on my Shatterpoint minis, to make them look like they're from the clone wars cartoon
I've generally found the opposite! I'm not an expert on nmm by any means, but I find you can make it look less shiny and stand out less from the rest of the paint job, while still selling the metal look. I love using both styles in different settings though.
15secs then laying down facts. No BS.
Thank You!
How did he know I was looking for metal painting tutorials?

Definitely need to try some of these myself. Thanks Guy!
I really like the second one, hive walls, and will likely use it on a couple of my knights.
I am intending to make Hive Fleet Phyrexia so these varried metalic recipes are a must. Thank you.
For number 6: My go to gold top coat is yellow ink with just the smallest amount of orange added to give it a little more hint of warmth.
Love you guys!
Very cool effect Ill definitely keep this video for future reference.
That contrast paint over silver method for gold... Trovarion does something very similar - Looks great.

I recommend using a bit of dark dark purple when doing rust effects.
Very good Video! I like these practical techniques! ❤

10/10 Amazing short video, to the point and great content. Commenting for the Omnissiah (algorithm god)

Incredible!
I'm about to start working with ink for the first time and now I'm gonna have to get some of that silver!
very nice, thanks.
Most welcome
Awesome stuff. That rusted metal would look pretty cool on a nurgle mini

Aggaros Dunes Contrast paint over silver makes for a great old gold type colour.
Wow awesome!
