I would never have come back to this hobby without your products! I happily preordered the full Fanatic set after falling in love with the Speedpaint set! Can't wait! Keep on making awesome stuff and supporting creators like Brent, and TAP can never go wrong!
I've been given a two bottle preview of Fur Brown and Marine Mist from my FLGS and let me tell you, the coverage (thinned with ~30% Glaze Medium) is bonkers. You've really produced some top notch insane value colours there!
Yes 100% I love mini painting and am very colourblind (pretty severe protan also). So I often just want to know what the colour actually is and it's a huge bonus to be able to see easily which colours are prematched as highlights/shades. War colours does this nicely but I don't like the gel medium. This seems promising and I really hope Vallejo goes this way too
@@GoobertownHobbies An RGB value would have been nice, too, as it makes it more convenient to sample an image for a color, although lighting variations and weathering can make matching from an image problematic -- is that the actual color, or the color under a layer of grime? And I know that CMYK is more technically correct for pigment-based color, but most people don't think well in the CMYK color space unless they work with printing.
The fact that they actually include primer in their starter set shows a lot about it actually being a starter set. Well played Army painter, well played.
Completely agree with you on your thoughts about starter sets, it can be so intimidating for people who are interested in minis to go into a shop and see the thousands of paint shades and such like. Little starter sets with a brush and minis is fantastic. I hope that manufacturers take note and make more starter kits with paints that are true single pigments so they can be mixed true. Having blue and yellow mix to a weird green grey can also be really baffling for newbies who know nothing of paint base pigments. Thanks for bringing this up Brent, as ever, you are an inspiration!
right on! I think a lot of paints will at least need to have white as a second pigment for opacity, but yeah, I wish mixing ability was closer to what we get taught in elementary art classes. If they swapped the ultramarine blue for something closer to a pseudo primary like "~magic blue" it'd be a better color wheel. Still, not bad, not bad 🙂
@@GoobertownHobbies I want the colors and labled as if I bought a set of artist paints, and they would mix ( color wise) just like the artist paints, and the full common set of them also. Naples yellow, Burnt Umber ULTRAMARINE BLUE and so forth. THose are the colors I want to see in a set, then I can have a clue on how to mix colors ( not that Im good at it) but I can look at a artist color chart and know how to get the color I want.
@@nobody342 And some of the mixes to get a particular color aren't obvious -- for example, olive drab isn't green, it's dark yellow. To demonstrate this with an image editor, open up the palette editor, and select a pure yellow -- #FFFF00 -- and then run the brightness down; the color will turn into an OD green as it gets darker. An example from aircraft modeling is the zinc chromate protective coating you can see on interior panels in many WWII aircraft. Zinc chromate by itself is a bright yellow with a touch of green, but where a second layer of paint was needed, the factories would mix in black to create a visual contrast to show where a second layer had already been painted, and the zinc chromate with black became a shade of OD green depending on how much black had been added. So don't be afraid to mix paints to get the exact shade you want, based on what you think the components are; you might not always get the color you expected, but you'll be learning how the colors combine -- and different companies' paint sets may not combine the same way.
Would be nice if people like GW would produce a starter paint set for more armies instead of just two. It would allow cheaper investment into seeing how you like painting each style of army and increase your library of paints. Kinda dumb when they have overlapping colors in each set.

Coming back to this video. I had a major issue in the house and had to sell a bunch of hobby projects to fund repairs. This video is a great reminder it doesnt take alot to make something great. In fact i think it would be a greay challenge to try to push yourself with a small collection of paints. Before i had to sell everything I was having alot of analysis paralysis with painting. Heaps of plastic going unpainted. The dread of wanting to paint things quickly as to not miss out on the hot new thing, but fearing messing up my expensive model. Staring at my empty desk i kind of feel unleashed, I might pick up this set, your recommended additional colors, and a troop box for each of the armies im interested in and give this whole minipainting thing another shot, but from the angle of being a minimalist. I always used to recommend the reaper starter sets but you had to get both of them to get all the paints you need to begin with. I am going to start recommending this set as it gives you all the colours you need. One box gives you the paints, primer, brush and mini.
I can see getting a kit for my daughter. She's used mine stuff in the past but I'm protective of my pricey paints. Her having her own to do whatever she wants with would be ideal. Good stuff, Brent!

I was in my local game store yesterday and I've always had the urge to try painting mini's but never followed through. I seen this starter kit and picked it up, painted the mini last night and I'm really happy with how it turned out. Definitely going to get some more and make this a new hobby
Really excited for these boxes to finally come out. I pre-ordered the complete set at my FLGS and justified it by donating all of my current paints (probably around 200) to a Warhammer youth league. Now I can trick myself into framing buying the full set as a charitable donation 😅
I love you Brent. Your message in this video is so pertinent to the hobby. You're the only "influencer" I've seen that highlighted the starter set and that means a lot to me.
Practical paint names! Incredibly helpful for those of us with color vision deficiencies. Good on ya for banging that drum and good on Army Painter for including them.
Army Painter's new lines of paints actually have me much more interested in the hobby. As someone who's mainly interested in the "fun way to make my minis look cool" factor moreso than the pure hobbyist aspect, the fact that there are accessible, affordable colors that are actually *good* without caveats makes me much more interested because I can start painting minis without putting up with cheap stuff or needing to shell out for higher end products out the gate.
Hullo Brent, It is always a great day when you post painting videos! So thanks! I do enjoy seeing you work and passing it along to those I have convinced to get some mini's and try growing this hobby, so Thanks!
Some notes on colour mixing. Our eyes have receptors for red, green, and blue (each receptor being sensitive to a certain wavelength of light). But paint is reflective so when light hits it reflects certain wavelengths and absorbs others. Red, green, and blue are the primary colors if you have a source of light (like a monitor). Paint doesn't emit light so there the primary colors are actually magenta, cyan, and yellow. So mixing red and blue paint doesn't make a good purple as you're mixing secondary colors together (red being magenta + yellow and blue being magenta + cyan). Incidentally, this is also how printers work (the whole CMYK thing). For purple, you should go something like three parts magenta and two parts cyan. And yes, we were all lied to in elementary school about colors and paint. So for a starter paint set where you would be expected to mix paint, the set of colors should be a rather strange one (as cyan and magenta are way more rarely used than red and blue). So I understand why Army Painter didn't go this route.
yupyup! without mixing, cyan and magenta are waaaaay less useful to most people than blue and red, so it makes sense why the company went with "pseudo primaries"... but even so, the choice of blue hue wasn't great... Someday a brave mini painting company will launch a starter box with CMYK :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies That blue is picked to look like Macragge blue from citadel, and that's a multi pigment monster which covers well, but only mixes OK towards highlights, and you better use something like ice yellow.
You're awesome Brent. Thank you for giving Army Painter detailed feedback, and thank you Army Painter for listening! I especially like the practical names.
Hey, I just wanted to say thank you so much for your input with the practical naming for the colors. I am a colorblind miniature painter, and it helps me a lot. I wish it had applied to some of the metals too.
@@GoobertownHobbies Now if we can just get the video game industry on board so I don't need my kids to tell me if my character's armor is green or gold. Lol.
Basic, but again… that’s the entire point of a little starter box like this. I know I didn’t have a million paints when I first started out. Your entire conclusion is absolutely on point, and it’s a solid review of the product.
Love this video! Your comment about not needing tons of shades rings true, it reminds me of Midwinter Minis Blackstone Fortress videos, which achieved amazing results with just 14 paints (and Guy is color blind, too!). The one thing though, for novices mixing paints can be a daunting task (I mean, not just mixing randomly but achieving the intended results). Even for veterans, it's nice to have the shades premixed, I always dread having to mix the same color again and not getting it quite right...
What a great video, some really important commentary on starter sets, and painting in general. I’m really looking forward to trying this range out. It’s come out at a time that I’m looking to invest in a new range to accompany the many I already use. High on the list of importance is not only a range that could substitute for Citadel in terms of colour scope, but also in its value and availability. For my own tutorials I like to recommend paints that cover all those areas, and it certainly feels like this could fit that bill. Just looking forward to being able to grab a few bottles to buy, I haven’t risked buying the big set.
hey thanks! yeah try a few bottles and see if you like it, I think this is a notable release, I'm curious to see what the wider community will think! :-)
Your videos are there own universe of relaxing. I love your voice. I love your teaching methods. I love your tempo. You're energy is full of love and passion. Thank you deeply for spreading that around, and sharing your passions with us. We love you Brent!
Thanks for your review Brent, my niece recently asked for me to teach her how to paint minis and this is definitely a great option to get her started in terms of paint kits I respect Army Painter for taking advice to heart I definitely can't wait for the fanatics range to launch
Wow it must be so cool to actually affect what is in kits and on the bottles in your favourite hobby. Congrats. That color naming and labelling looks fantastic.
These minis came out great Brent. Been enjoying the content you produce for a good while. Thank you! As a fellow dane, I hope you enjoyed your stay in our little country.
Hi Brent, in your video about the science of pigments you mentioned that you’d like to look into the topic further by looking at spectra of different paints. I’m a physicist and work with spectrometers and optics, and my research group is always enthusiastic about outreach, so if you ever wanted to explore this it would be easy for me to work on an experiment to systematically take some reflection and absorption spectra of a number of different paints/paint combinations and send you all the processed data. Love your channel and adore the way you bring a scientific eye to a hobby where there’s so much vibes based advice.
The footage of mixing each of the starter set paints was so helpful for me. I always thought I was doing something wrong getting muddy colors. I'd love more content around how to get more value out of mixing smaller sets of paints.
Thanks for a really helpful video. I’m something of a veteran painter with over fifty years of experience with Napoleonics , ACW and other historical periods I’m always ready to try something new and so ordered the “Must Have” set before catching your video and am glad I did. My next project will be the Italian Wars of the Renaissance and so I was looking for brighter colours as a change from the basic greens and blues etc of the Napoleonic period. This new range will be perfect for the vivid and varied colours I want. May I also say that I find your voice very relaxing and easy listening. Thanks again and I have subscribed. Cheers from the UK and Happy New Year. Keith
This was a fantastic review of these paints! It was a great primer that I needed to cover a demo of these paints in my FLGS. I'll be using the notes I took from this and Dana's video to share with folks in person tomorrow. Thank you for this!
As someone who has been using the old Army Painter line for a while, I can agree they're often inconsistent paints. My old bottle of Ultramarine Blue always comes out slightly separated. And my Alien Purple has always been a goopy mess. I doubt I'll be investing in a new core set anytime soon, since my current collection is functional. But I'm glad to hear the range is being refreshed, and will try to grab the new bottles as I expand my collection in the future.
Your colour wheel mixing gave me elementary school flashbacks! The horror! Yes the unlabelled/multi-pigments really hamper individuals experience with mixing in general and is apparent with these selections. But that is an industry wide problem. Too bad, this deterrent may make people feel they can't mix their own colours and should just buy them instead... Jokes aside I'd probably gift this set to my nephew. Giftable is the best recommendation for any product.
Thanks for sharing this video with us. There's definitely many different paint brands out there for the starting hobbyist to buy and use on his or her miniatures. Your video will help them decide which color paints to use.
This starterkit and your run through of it is really encouraging for me as a hesitant painter! I've been scratch bashing up a storm but i have been too paralyzed by choice to really get into the painting.
The dinosaur looks great, much better than the limited number of paints you used would suggest. Plus, I love seeing One Page Rules minis get some love.
Thank you for fueling my confirmation bias. I preordered the big box. I hope, that their triads system will help me to select colors. Due to my red/green color sight deficiency (colorblindness) I have a really hard time selecting appropriate colors. I thank you for this video. It will be my recommended starting video for people who are interested in the hobby.
I always appreciate your takes on paints. In fact, you have inspired me to dive into airbrushing again. I'll be sure to pick up some of these from the fanatic line.
I'm glad to see that this an actually suitable starter set for new painters to get their hands on - something I could grab & gift to my kids for their own jump-start into the hobby, for instance. I, personally, started in the hobby with the AP warpaints starter set - similar to the one tested here (flesh as opposed to gold is the most notable change). Too many of that set were plain awful for a new painter to try to use and I spent so long struggling with them that I didn't build any confidence until I started using other brands, and once that confidence took off I was able to experiment with techniques & processes. To this day the Ultramarine Blue is the worst paint I've ever had the misfortune to use.
the retirement of the old army painter warpaints is going to raise the average experience of new painters by a lot! Finally we're at a point where most of the paints on the market are actually pretty dang good, and it's easier than ever to get folks started off right! Interesting about the gold flesh substitution, of all the colors in here, gold is probably the least important.
Definitely not going to move away from pro acryl and ak, but very happy to see someone making an entry level starter set that should be making every other company rethink their entry level starter sets
@@GoobertownHobbies I'm super new to wargaming (December), and I really struggle having my paints look bright and clear, it always ends up muddy and dirty. Maybe I'm totally wrong in thinking AP is anything special here, but everything I see about AP seems so geared towards people like me. I've bought so many gosh darn GW paints and had no idea what the end product would look like. Often ruining the model for me...
keep workin at it! There's a learning curve for sure, but it's realllly satisfying when you figure out how to make something work. I believe in you 🙂 @@splatsma

I have some new friends getting into the hobby and I'm hoping this will help them.
Great video Brent. Was hoping to meet you at ides of march TTK event but sounds like I'm gonna be stuck working instead of competing in the painting competition. Glad to find out you are a local talent. One of my favorites on the YT for sure.
Hey Brent, I just wanted to thank you here bud. This was one of my first introductory videos as my best friend and I have gotten started with the hobby. I was having trouble deciding on a starter kit, but this definitely sold the Army Painter WF set for me. I'll be picking one up shortly!
12:50 Brush-on primer is also really nice to have if you're painting a big showcase mini that comes pre-assembled or injection-moulded into a complex shape - I've got a dragon mini from a dungeon crawl board game that has its wings sort of domed up around its face; looks great as a pose, but trying to prime that surface with anything but a paintbrush is not something I'd want to do.
Great video Brent. I've been keeping an eye on various reviews of these paints. You did a wonderful job with this demo and I appreciate that as a consumer. Please keep up the great work. Your videos are always a pleasure. Cheers!
Thanks Brent. This is a great review of the starter set from Army Painter. I’ll recommend it to my D&D group. I’m trying to get them into painting minis. I’ve gifted them a mini each and will be putting on a painting session soon. Thanks!
Damn... this is an incredible video. The microscope details surprised me, that was super interesting! Having a chemist's eye on paints gives a whole other level of interesting insights. Thank you for your videos!
I'm just getting into the hobby, as in I don't even own any minis yet, and I was just complaining today that it seemed like there weren't any great comprehensive starter kits for beginners, which shocked me given how dedicated the community seems to be. Thankfully, given that community on UA-cam and Reddit and other places, I have a good idea of at least where to start and what to start with, and I've found a few local shops.
I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but as a total beginner, I would think a comprehensive starter kit should come with a couple minis as practice, a small but easily mixable color assortment to get folks started on color theory stuff(I've seen a few kits that were like reds greens and browns only and I think that'd just annoy me) a primer, a few brushes, maybe a cheap wet palette, maaaybe plastic glue cus I feel like I'll need that real soon, and maybe cheap clippers and a flexible sanding stick. Maybe there's a company that makes it, but I've seen no TOOLS to get you started kits either. Everything I've heard about has come from the community not the companies.
YOUR THE REASON FOR PRACTICAL NAMES?!! i noticed that on the new speed paints as well and its such a great thing, i got the "game master" starter set because it was a great deal, but the 12 ml bottles only go so far and all of the names are unique even though the paints are identical to the standard range, id much rather a consistent naming in fine print, then they can wild otherwise with the craziest names possible

It's a step in the right direction, we'll keep workin on it! :-)
His tone is so relaxing and he paints so lovely. I truly enjoy these videos. Thank you.
Even for veterans, it's nice to have the shades premixed, I always dread having to mix the same color again and not getting it quite right...
yup yup! ~ 14 paints can take you a loooooong way. Add a few personal extra favorites and you've got a dang good palette!
The new labels are amazing, I love them. I am slightly obsessed with fitting in AK Fusion Orange on minis. It's remarkable. Very pumpkin orange.
Your videos are there own universe of relaxing. I love your voice. I love your teaching methods. I love your tempo. You're energy is full of love and passion. Thank you deeply for spreading that around, and sharing your passions with us. We love you Brent!
My complete set just came in yesterday, looking forward to painting some stuff tonight
oh nice! have fun :-)
Great video as ever Brent! Love your work. I enjoy your take on the hobby from the 'Every Man' view point.
Thanks for your review Brent, my niece recently asked for me to teach her how to paint minis and this is definitely a great option to get her started in terms of paint kits
I respect Army Painter for taking advice to heart I definitely can't wait for the fanatics range to launch
Nice!! Good luck with the lessons :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies Thank you I look forward to it
Wow it must be so cool to actually affect what is in kits and on the bottles in your favourite hobby. Congrats. That color naming and labelling looks fantastic.
These minis came out great Brent. Been enjoying the content you produce for a good while. Thank you!
As a fellow dane, I hope you enjoyed your stay in our little country.
Thanks Brent, I got started with your tutorials and appreciate your focus on helping new painters
Hello! I'd love to have a chat with you. If you send an email to the address in the "about" section of the youtube page we can set something up.
Very glad to see this. I'm quite keen on getting this starter set myself, so I am glad for your review. Thanks!
it's a pretty good box, give it a try, I hope you have fun painting! :-)
wow 11 paints for a starter kit is fantastic. especially since it covers the primary colors that lets you mix basically everything else. awesome.
it's a good kit! The blue strays a bit too far from "primary blue," but other than that it's pretty dang good! :-)
That's awesome to hear! Good luck with your recruiting :-)
I started a week ago at my local lgs who did a class with their new fanatic set and omg ive loved it since and took a giant plunge
This is outstanding news! I'm so happy to hear this, keep goin keep paintin! :-)
The strength of the color is a nice addition I didn't know I'd need. Thanks for the suggestion you did.
But I'm glad to hear the range is being refreshed, and will try to grab the new bottles as I expand my collection in the future.
sounds good! yup, when you run out of paint the replacement will be an upgrade, something to look forward to :-)
Your colour wheel mixing gave me elementary school flashbacks!
Giftable is the best recommendation for any product.
yeahhhh... well... one step at a time! This is better than some of the previous starter sets :-)
Thanks for sharing this video with us. There's definitely many different paint brands out there for the starting hobbyist to buy and use on his or her miniatures. Your video will help them decide which color paints to use.
The changes to the labeling is great!
right? things are looking up! :-)
Yes at last a video about Army Painters new paints! I looked desperately for that on youtube, now my search is at last over! Hoooray!
ok it's naptime, go to your room.
Thanks for the video! I was hoping you would do a video on the fanatics line, in particular the Starter Kit.
Well, Brent, this video is kitty approved. He stepped on my tablet and made it full-screen. Congratulations😸
Woooo!!!! :-)
Bought this kit and few brushes about a month a go and have been obsessed with painting since. After ~40 minis paints are holding up well
This starterkit and your run through of it is really encouraging for me as a hesitant painter! I've been scratch bashing up a storm but i have been too paralyzed by choice to really get into the painting.
I believe in you! get them custom minis some paint! :-)
Thank you for showing the best way to paint the mini from the color box.
I like that you used the starter set and not the HUGE box that is out of reach for most of us.
I never realized until now, but I don't think I've ever seen a painting video from someone that is left handed. It gives uncanny valley vibes.
It will be my recommended starting video for people who are interested in the hobby.
nice! I've been having fun with these paints, I hope you like them too :-)
I always appreciate your takes on paints.
I am beyond excited for this set to hit my flgs. Thank you for such a wonderful review.
Definitely not going to move away from pro acryl and ak, but very happy to see someone making an entry level starter set that should be making every other company rethink their entry level starter sets
agreed! pro acryl and TTC are staying on my desk, but more good paint on the market is good for everybody :-)
I am so impressed with the brightness of this paint range.
there are some fun colors in there. Brightness isn't technologically hard to achieve, but the colors do look nice:-)
Sweet video! I recently got my first paints and unpainted minis, i quickly realized I was missing a few key colors. I’m making due, but I will be picking up a few single bottles of paint asap
nice!!! I hope you have fun painting, I'm excited for ya! :-)
I just wanna say. I appreciate you wearing a glove when you airbrush. I see so many videos of people just blasting their hands and I'm like "Mate, please, wear a glove, your life will be better for it"
Also these paints look great. I have some new friends getting into the hobby and I'm hoping this will help them.
oh yeah, I don't want my hand to get all crusty! 🙂
Brent answering the questions that matter, as always. Classic Wholesometown Hobbies!
Great work! The minis all turned out great. Big fan of the dino!
It is true that nobody needs hundreds of bottles of paint. But it sure is fun!
always a good day when goobertown uploads
thanks for checking it out :-)
I have a friend that asked me to show him, how to paint miniatures. I think I'll get him this as a birthday present.
That's what I like to hear! Thank you for recruiting for this great hobby :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies You're welcome :D
Great video Brent. Was hoping to meet you at ides of march TTK event but sounds like I'm gonna be stuck working instead of competing in the painting competition. Glad to find out you are a local talent. One of my favorites on the YT for sure.
ahhhh, we'll run into each other one of these days! I'll try to check out portcon and huzzah near portland this year.
This is a great video for beginners! I’m excited for some of these paints to hit stores too!
What Great video, great review, and thoughtful commentary on what this hobby needs to help grow and bring in new people!
Great video, highly relevant to newbies and veterans alike. Thanks!
One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was adding green to rust colors. You’d be surprised at how well it works!
oooh, that's an interesting idea!
Hey Brent, I just wanted to thank you here bud. This was one of my first introductory videos as my best friend and I have gotten started with the hobby. I was having trouble deciding on a starter kit, but this definitely sold the Army Painter WF set for me. I'll be picking one up shortly!
I started with the painting hobby and was unsure if getting the small set would be OK until I saw this video, thank you!
this box is a fine place to start! Welcome to the hobby :-)
I do love everything you do! Thanks once again!
thanks for watchin!! :-)
Great video and demonstration! Thank you very much for making it!
I wish Army Painter was more widely available in the UK
Nice to see the Gloomhaven City Guard making his way in the world!
hehehe, there he is! :-)
Cheers!
As a dreadfully colorblind hobbyist, I am super hyped about this line of paints.
Thanks Brent. This is a great review of the starter set from Army Painter. I’ll recommend it to my D&D group. I’m trying to get them into painting minis. I’ve gifted them a mini each and will be putting on a painting session soon. Thanks!
Alright I'm just going to subscribe. I've been enjoying most of your videos
welcome aboard :-)
Damn... this is an incredible video. The microscope details surprised me, that was super interesting! Having a chemist's eye on paints gives a whole other level of interesting insights. Thank you for your videos!
Right on! That Microscope reveals many secrets :-)
Great video and definitely going to get a set to replace my war paints, thanks Brent.
Yup! I complained enough about names that they fixed them a bit! :-) hehehehe
Happy to see you post!
