There was an interview way back on The Painting Phase that explained exactly why GW made the mold line remover. It's a product not designed for us as adult hobbyists, but rather for younger kids that live places where you can't sell a knife to someone under 18. The mold line remover isn't a knife, and makes it so they can have a tool in order to work on their minis.
@@Zeromus5555the older ones (and the ones you'd get in those starter boxes) were actually really good and were way cheaper. I really liked them because I didn't like needing to change out a blade just to get at one little piece. The newer ones though are so overpriced.
I can respect the need to not sell a hobby knife to say an 8 year old, but it seems to me that in most cases a child young enough that they can't safely use a knife probably should be asking a parent or FLGS staff to help with their mood lines if they even notice them in the first place.
It drives me nuts how many people pronounce it like that - but I understand, as it tends to be a word people read first before saying and then they tend to hear the other people speaking it out loud for the first time more than the real pronounciation lmao
Dude that's how I learned it and I speak English natively. It's because they read it somewhere before hearing it out loud. I thought for a long time it meant like an epic tome about something since I was always reading fantasy novels lol.
The paint pot is actually pretty cool, the brush shaper on the side actually works pretty well And it looks nothing at all like my coffee, so it's reducing my paint consumption by at least 50%
@@danielcarlsen9228 overpriced maybe, ultimately it’s a container that holds water, literally anyone can find something for this for free. But short lived? Nothing wrong with mine after many years. I still love it. Do I need it? No. But it puts me in a good mood and makes me happy for a piece of plastic and I think there’s something to it. *shrug* I admit it’s a bit consumery but I still think it’s a solid item.
LOL, $52 for a $8-20 tool... My wife uses the small painting handle but also uses prescription bottles that are weighted and some tacky putty. She also has the cup and swears by the paint brush shaping. She also made her own wet palette.
Fun fact about that assembly holder thing. The arms were originally attached to its own painting handle and was initially marketed as a bit holder for painting sub assemblies, but the arms were too weak to hold them in place for painting. Then people realized that they were useful when doing kitbashes and conversions as it could hold things in awkward angles while the glue dried, and since the jaws were weak it wouldnt damage bits like metal jaws would. So gw immediately pivoted and marketed it as such
@@Ben-fk9ey In all honesty though, if you really needed this, you could find another one online with stronger arms for a lower or similar price. Even if it had metal clamps you can place something between the metal and the model to protect the plastic.
@@Ben-fk9ey For metal you really need stronger arms go with the cheap metal one with the roach clips on the end and the magnifier. Here in the US they are sold at Harbor Freight for less than 10 dollars. I am sure they are available many other places too.
I'm probably the only one who actually loves the waterpot. Despite it being plastic, it's design is super sturdy, you need to be actively trying to knock it down to spill any water at all. Plus all the little things are really nice, like the ribbed bottom to help get the color out.
The paint pot is by far the best tool for the price. It's Jarring that he hates it but loves the spray stick when you can get a paint stick and sticky tak for less than $5 to prime your minis.

Im not putting my Godhands anywhere near GW sprues. GW kits can be cut with cheap snips and cleaned with a knife coz Im painting over any stress marks. Gunpla on the other hand needs something more delicate and when Godhands are so fragile comparatively, using them on GW kits is asking for them to break early.
I have a washed out jam jar and a plastic tub pickle container for my water pots for that reason. I'll never accidentally drink from them but they were free.
tbh, the mug is pretty neat. the small cutout at the top makes the easy to put the brush to the side for a minute or two without it going on adventures.
New video idea: Will it Mould-Line Remover?! Find any and all items with a sharp edge laying around (cheese slicer, kitchen knife, thumbnails etc.) and compare them and their price point to the GW tool
but i read, that the pictures on the side of the box are the exact same size it needs to be and people are making bigger groups of flayed ones just by using the cardboard box.
When I first got into painting I heard that the Games Workshop spray painting handle was a waste of money and that just sticking your minis to cardboard was way better. After the third time, I went to the pub with spray paint stuck to my hands, I realised it might be worth getting.
The best clippers are not miniature clippers. They are electrical/wiring clippers. Take a trip to your local hardware store and look at electrical tools/wiring tools. Same exact thing for better price and quality. They are designed to repeatedly cut copper wires, so they are precise and cut like butter.
@@EdAllen "if you actually want to cut wires for long." Wire is approximately 150 times as hard as plastic. I mean cmon do you really think you're gonna wear out a pair of wire cutters on plastic?
One thing about the GW knife they didn't touch on (or maybe its just an issue they've never really run across) that I like is that, with its design, your extremely unlikely to accidentally loosen the blade and cause a potentially serious accident, since the collar (the part that tightens/loosens the collet holding the blade) is situated in the palm instead of up by the blade itself.
The biggest scam from GW is their glue. I hate that bottle design with a passion, it's like it's been specifically designed so that no glue comes out of it.

Tamiya extra thin is a scam. Buy bottles of butyl acetate and acetone, and mix in an equal ratio for Tamiya Extra Thin and their airbrush cleaner formula.
If those clippers aren't on par with God's Hand clippers they aren't worth it. That paint cup is hella good though. I use mostly crappy synthetic brushes. 0 regrets on buying it.
Water pots - Clean out an empty jam/jelly/coffee/peanut butter/nutella/whatever jar when you've finished it. Insttant perfect water pot that has a lid!
I use a plastic instant porridge pot. They’re probably about the same size as the the GW water pot. I imagine instant noodle pots would be good too. However don’t use a paper coffee cup as after a few hours the water soon makes them turn to mush and leak. If you pick it up, it’ll disintegrate and dump all the water all over your table
The subassembly holders are very useful because you don‘t Need to drill. You cut the tip and glue the head/backpack on it. Especially in combination with the mini holder for basecoating it works great.
I will stan for the paint cup. I know there are plenty of cheaper, just as good options out there, but I love mine. The ridges might be a gimmick but I truly think they make a difference. The flared bottom makes it so stable. The brush holder on the edge is convenient. It's very durable, and it just looks really cool. If anything ever did happen to mine (which is hard to imagine apart from straight up losing it) I'd happily buy another.
The problem with the back of a hobby knife is due to its blade partial flexibility you can get stairs of dents instead of nice flush. Citadel mould remover is a great tool if you know how to use it. Only thing is the old model was better, sturdier. They totally cheaped out on a metal volume here
The clippers are even worse than you think. Went through a single box of the chaos marines combat patrol sprues and the clipper’s spring gave out making them basically unusable.
@@JontysCorner I got one of the cheaper ones with the new age of Sigmar tools and paint set that has been released recently and the clippers aren't bad at all. I actually appreciate them being smaller than the ones they sell separately.
If buying drills for hand drilling holes, the most important thing is you buy "split point" drill bits. They have a sharp tip, which means they won't slip off the model and they basically centre themselves (most of the time I don't need to put a preparatory dent on the model to use as a guide). A lot of drills are not made for hand drilling and thus are NOT split point, so when trying to drill by hand the drill keeps trying to wander away from where you want it.
$21 for 2 mini files.... Anyone who buys this stuff from GW should be embarrassed. I have a mini file set from Home Depot that not only came with 10 different shaped files and varying file-teeth, a detachable handle but also a hard plastic enclosed case for $17. The reliance on customers being morons and unearned hubris it takes to price things at GW must be next level.
to be honest I buy the GW stuff because the shop is about 100 yards away from where I work. The DIY stores are five miles out of town and with being busy most weekends getting out to them isn't much of an option. But yes the GW stuff needs to be cheaper for what it is.
The painting handles have made a big difference for me. I've learned that basically everything else aside from models and paints, it's better and cheaper to go elsewhere. I buy $3 brushes that don't curl. BBs for mixing balls are 1/3 the cost. dollar store bottles, trays, makeup brushes and tools, nail clippers. plastic cement, box cutters, nail files, toothpicks. want materials for basing? grab some rocks and grass from outside. Looks pretty realistic!
If you try using the water pot, you will change your mind. I was 100% sure it was a scam, but I got it as a gift a couple of years ago and would never go back to a glass/mug again. It will never get knocked over, it's got the bit on the top to hold your brush and the grooves are great to get paint out of the brush without damaging the bristles.
Some of these tools are things I use all the time - I have a smaller mouldline remover from the first one of the Hachette magazines, I use it all the time. I prefer it to using a file, and I really don’t like using a hobby knife, I’m far too clumsy to be trusted with a sharp blade. The water pot is one of those things that you can do without, but once you have it it’s essential - as others have said, you’re not gonna drink your paint water if you’re using it. It’s something that I’d suggest if I was asked by someone “oh, what should I get for my nephew who paints the Warhammers?” It’s a nice little thing to give a new hobbyist for a Secret Santa if you don’t know what models they’re painting. I feel the same way about the spray stick - by no means is it essential, you can just blu-tack your models to a stick, but I just think it’s neat. It’s a nice surprise that the spray stick was so well-received in this video. (I don’t use the rubber bands on it though, I just use blu-tack). Also, this video has reminded me that I need to get a new good quality set of clippers.

But the reason for the mold lined remover is that GW gets to sell it without parents needing to be present instead of selling knives which require an adult to be present

During the 80s me and my friend competed in figure painting many times, we both were avid roleplayers. Competitions were held in Fantasy Games(Finland) We both won one after another . My friend eventually was picked up by GW to paint miniatures. He moved to UK and I kinda envied him a lot, until he came back and said it was a horrible place to work.
@@gabrielepasserini6860 that was Tom Kirby, he was an accountant and bought out the company with some others in I think 1991. He was CEO for some of the best years of GW but also for the absolute worst period (early-mid 10s) and so everyone hates him now. He was replaced in 2016 I think

I actually swear by the knife and painting handles. The knife is expensive yes, but I always found my hands cramping when i used the smaller pencil shaped ones. Not to mention the extra blade guard helps with cutting. as for the painting handles, I have gotten so much paint on them and they are still just as tight and easy to use as ever. They never drop the minis, and are a joy to use. Everything else I cannot see myself using, but those 2 products are 10/10 in my books.
Question, did you check if it's possible to mount non-GW blades into the knife? That handle does look really comfortable for "pushing on the back of the blade" that I do a lot when cleaning up my model kits, so being able to get a (used?) GW knife and load up high quality blades would be pretty neat.
I actually found a God Hand for that price. It was on sale, but still, brand new god hand for the same price as citadel nippers that don't even come CLOSE to standing up
I never got the spray paint handle with all the little rubber bands on it. I use a small plank with carpet tape on it. Works like a charm! The minis stick and they are easy to remove without damaging the models
The fact you could find any mold lines to test the tool on your own minis so you had to get GW one is probably one of the best adds you could give to them
I have several GW 'tools' I collected over the years that came as part of different beginner sets. The only one I use regularly is the mini handle, it is quite nice overall. When painting in batches I still mostly use pill bottles with blue tack since I only have 1 GW handle and would not pay for something I can make for free.
Some notes I would just like to add: 1) For Tool 6, the scam boyo, I do own one, and it's almost entirely used for flight stands, long pointy things going into top heavy things, I attach the arms, glue and hold the pieces together for about 30 seconds, and then let the arms hold it for at least 3 minutes. It has significantly reduced the amount of frustration and pain I have with flight stands, and when I'm batch assembly'ing, it can actually be useful. I do combine it with the large painting handle to give the painting handle (when I'm not holding it) a wider base for the exact reason of it tipping over. 3/10 scam. 2) The paint pot is nice, simply because I have never spilled my paint water with it. Sometimes when hobbying, my desk gets filled up a bunch with stuff, I twist around in my chair and bump the mug or something or another. I have partially tipped other things I've used (especially disposable cups with water), but the really wide base basically makes sure you will never have that problem, ever again. Another thing, is having the paint pot be just a dedicated "THIS IS NOT A MUG" sign is extremely helpful. I usually have 1 or 2 mugs on my desk for coffee, tea, etc. Essentially dark pigmented drinks, and I often leave my paint pot with a dark pigmented water... I have on more than one occasion picked up my old mug and nearly attempted to drink out of it (I only partially drank out of it once, that was a long 16 hour work day and I was just trying to paint for a bit before sleeping), and it also helps to deter and stop people who DON'T hobby from messing with the mug. I thought it would be obvious that people don't touch foreign objects, but children and less than sharp adults have proven me otherwise time and time again. Finally, the ridges at the bottom make it very easy to clean brushes. Don't use it for your finer brushes, but your dry brushes and stiff bristle brushes you can absolutely use it to help clean some of the paint out. 1/10 scam. That's it :)
I have to assume the GW water pot is plain grey plastic because you're supposed to PAINT IT in your own style. We are miniature painters after all, are we not?! I vote for a Squidmar video where you guys paint your GW mugs! :)
Yeah seeing those guys say $52 is expensive, I agreed. Then stating the ones you use are $48, you lost me You state the others are really pricey but its a $4 difference compared to what you use...in my eyes admitting the ones you use are also overpriced but ok
17:45 You could just make this with balsa wood, nails and elastic bands for like $2. $24 seems pretty steep for a painting stand made out of cheap plastic and rubber, although the design is pretty good.
you guys just saved me from buying the sub Assembly holder to paint heads/helmets for my black Templars. I'm just going to use a chopstick and bluetac now and see how that works,since I'm not a fan of wine.Thank you.
Been using bluetac or similar products for subassembly since I started painting a few years ago (instead of chopstick, something closer to the needle-in-cork from the video, with tac on top), as long as you let it harden before painting and don't drybrush roughly, it shouldn't fail you. Also you can easily set up a few in a row, if you need batch painting.
I really like the sub-assembly holder. It's been essential for painting all the parts for my Sororitas army, but I dont pin in the assembly, I just glue it with plastic cement and it holds perfectly fine. I also can reuse it dozens of time
Yeah I’ve enjoyed it too, I even bought a second so I can have more of the little holders so handy, I also have a piece of wood with a heap of holes drilled in so I can line up my sub assemblies for batch painting

GW sells (or at least they did when I first started) packs that are supposed to be for getting started, but it includes a mini file, clippers, basic paints, like 2 or 3 brushes, and some other stuff for like 25 dollars back when I got it. The mini file is still my go to file and the only reason I stopped using the clippers is because I havent gotten a new army in like a year or two (we all know why), so theyve legit rusted over and I had to get new ones when I wanted to fix up some models a bit. A lot of their tools are kinda just crash grabs, but not all of them.
They rusted? WTF? I own 3 clippers, two of which I haven't used for years because I bought them for cheap and replaced them with an expensive Faller one and none of them have any rust on them.
@elricdotah rust also heavily depends on where you live lmao. Most metals rust, it's insanely common for tools, that's why they make shit to counteract it.
The subassembly holder thing has actually saved my ass multiple times when working with superglue, especially with metal minis. Because that stuff sometimes takes really long to harden properly, and I'm not gonna hold something by hand for 30 minutes. It's a bit fiddly to get the arms in the right places, but once you do they do hold in place quite nicely.
Gunpla painter here! I’ve had all of my tools for around a decade and never looked back. Ever since getting into Warhammer the only thing I’ve ever purchased from GW was the water pot only because how ridiculous it was.
As someone who got into minis after years of building gunpla, I'm shocked at how high the prices are for sub-par products marketed to miniature hobbyists, minis themselves included (especially GW - their molds and prices are horrid, one dude for the price of a 1/100 MG model kit? Getting a resin printer and some STLs will put you in the green SO fast compared to buying retail plastics). Seriously, if you want superb tools at appropriate prices, just look for scale kit tools, and check on scale modelling forums/message boards for suggestions on how to outfit your workshop, rather than miniature forums. Gunpla, model kit communities (planes, tanks, etc), historic diorama builders, etc. have a lot of great suggestions, tips and insights that aren't skewed by a particular producer's overwhelming marketing (usually).
@@Bakecrusto Yep. Model builder here (horror, sci-fi, kaiju, dinosaur). I can't believe the tools marketed to mini hobby. OTOH, I hang out in the mini world because they have some great painting techniques, some interesting paints, and amazing videos showing how to do it. The hobbies need much more cross-pollination. Share the best that each aspect has. I dabble in gunpla (I like the chibi ones) Gonna try some of the mr hobby paints and primers here soon. They look so silky smooth on gunpla.
Also there is the little triangle paint pot holder for holding 3x paint pots. Its certainly usefull in my mind at least as you usually only use one colour at the time. If you have limited work space like me, its nice with having everything small.
The mold line remover is worth $26 if you're absolutely tired of your kid cutting themselves on a hobby knife. For the typical adult gamer, this is a completely redundant item. over the years I've learned there is almost always a cheaper alternative even for the useful items. It was fun to watch you guys try them out for us, though.

A feature on the knife that I specifically found to be unique and good for safety is that the security nut that tightens down the blade is located in a place that if you're holding the knife as intended it doesn't come loose accidentally. The water cup has a nice little horizontal brush stand indent that is actually great too.
Eh. There are a 1-2 decent ones. The brush cleaner pot is actually pretty good and is an easy recommend for people who have trouble keeping their brushes in good condition. The paint handles are also good if you paint a lot of infantry or medium sized vehicles and monsters - they would all be a godsend for a Tyranids player for example.
Absolutely! To respond to the other two comments You don't need the citadel paint cup you can go to the dollar store or your local thrift store and buy a super cheap coffee mug. And while you're there, get some sticky blue wall tack and then you can turn any old pill bottles that you have at home into painting handles
Less money = more useful, except that painting paper thing. Really like the pot ad a 3D printed brush holder and it’s even better. Plus you’ll never accidentally take a sip from it.
The Citadel Paint Cup is something ive also came around to. There were multiple situations where is bumped it, and when a normal cup would spill all over my desk, this ons just skidded along the table maybe spilling 2 drops. While i never use the side ridges, the bottom waves actually DO help a bit with cleaning the paint from the brush without jamming it into the bottom. I have to recommend it. And with $12 its actually not that bad compared to many other hobby products.
I'm a jeweller so had 8t anyway but the lindstrom flush snips do a great job. The cut metal wires with a decent flat edge and do just as well with plastic, it means where the outer edge is will be the what is left.
I've literally never used a sprue cutter and I've been in this hobby for 7 years. I use a toe nail clipper for them and it works perfectly fine. (Specifically the ingrown toe nail style clippers as they are basically just a more curved looking sprue cutter and can get into hard to reach areas really easy) Not to mention they are like $10 at the dollar store/Walmart.
I really like the pallet pad. It has two uses - It's great as an annotateable pallet that I can keep, so I can remember exactly what colours I used during my very infrequent painting bursts, and colour match if I'm using different ranges / paints change. And then all my pallets are in one place. Yes, I paint THAT infrequently! Secondly, the pages can be glued using plastic glue, so they make great paperthin plasticard for adding panels, straps and other fine decorations to models.
That "head holding" sub-assembly tool has one good use. Spare bitz. That spike form looks like something you could use on terrain or vehicles, and you get quite a few of them too. Other than that, its absolute trash clearly.
The best use for the assembly stand is when you have a bunch of sub-assemblies stuck to pieces of sprue the holes in the bottom of the stand can hold a bunch of pieces. I tossed the clips into a random drawer and haven't looked at them since.
I’ve been using the clippers from the starter paint set for like a year now and they’re only just getting blunt. So glad i didn’t cash out for the “fancier” ones
It's so weird too, because those starter set clippers are miles better than the "fancier" ones they're trying to sell. Like you, I have been using them pretty steadily over the past several years and only recently did they get shelved for an actual nice pair.

@@JarthenGreenmeadow I used to think that, until I tried cutters in the $20-30 range. It's a completely different experience. You damage your minis way less and/or have way less clean up. There is no tension and then a snap of breaking plastic, it's a smooth buttery cut. I've never tried HD wire cutters though, just cheap generic hobby cutters.
I'm shocked at all the mold-line remover hate. It's probably one of my most used tools when I'm building minis. I can get a little distracted, so having an alternative to a hobby knife is amazing
Likewise, I posted that I see it similar to a scrapping blade for woodwork or a burr remover in a machine shop. If you know what you are doing works much better than a hobby knife, granted you will need something for tight spaces.
I bought a lot of these ages ago when I started painting. I still use them, my clippers and moldline thingy are all metal though. That paint cup will not tip over which is an advantage for clumsy people.

Dude. I pay like 3 to 6 bucks at swap meets for electrical flush cuts and they are some of the best clippers I’ve ever found. 50 bucks for clippers? No thanks.
For the painting handle, I just dabbed glue under the base of my squad and let them dry on an old ruler or paint stick before I gave them the old black spray can treatment. You can do a whole bunch of squads one after the other that way.
I don’t think you guys know what scam means. Products from wish or temu are sold for below production cost a lot of the time to encourage people to buy more, you cant say that something is a scam by comparing the price to products that are manufactured with subsidies and sold at artificially low prices to drum up business. Almost every product made outside of china would be classified as a scam then since non Chinese companies actually are required to pay living wages and need to make a profit in order to stay in business.
so for $5 US. you can get a needle file set from Harbour Freight with larger handles and with a large variety of shapes(flat, square, round, triangular, half round) I work with a lot of metal figures so for me they work great, but even with plastic they make cleaning edges, mold lines, and cuts so much easier.
I use the subassembly holders a lot for my Imperialis Tanks so I can batch paint them in combination with the spray stick. It's nice to be able to spray a dozen tanks without painting my fingers, and get around underneath them.
I'm two minutes in, if you're getting nippers go to the gunpla recommendations, guys in that hobby have been pushing their development for the last like 30years
That assembly stand is a pretty novel idea but there are obviously better tools that could be used for the same purpose. You could buy a soldering "helping hands" which is used to hold PCB boards while you solder components onto them. The clamp is typically metal with teeth but some kits come with rubber covers which would be excellent for minis since the rubber prevents the teeth from marring the surface of the figure. Helping hand tools are around the same price as this assembly stand and are much higher quality AND they're not going to flop around like the assembly stand in the video does.
The files are the biggest scam. You can get a whole set of needle files at any auto parts store for less. They come in multiple shapes and grades. They last forever and some sets are double ended so you get twice as many file shapes or course and fine versions.
The spray stick has been excellent. I've started using tack to stick the base to the stick so I don't have to paint the spots where the rubber bands sit on the base. The paint handles have also been amazing. The mold line remover isn't worth the price, but it's nice to get my kids involved in cleaning minis, or when building their own models/Gundams, without giving them a knife.
On the old handles that GW sold, for the large one, I drilled 2 minuscule holes, then I submerged it in water, first tapping it got the water in, eventually I had to suck on one of the holes to get the rest of the air out. Then I glued over the holes. Handle was heavier and bottom heavy. Still not perfect, but a lot sturdier and the extra weight wasn’t a drag on the hands.

There was an interview way back on The Painting Phase that explained exactly why GW made the mold line remover. It's a product not designed for us as adult hobbyists, but rather for younger kids that live places where you can't sell a knife to someone under 18. The mold line remover isn't a knife, and makes it so they can have a tool in order to work on their minis.

I can respect the need to not sell a hobby knife to say an 8 year old, but it seems to me that in most cases a child young enough that they can't safely use a knife probably should be asking a parent or FLGS staff to help with their mood lines if they even notice them in the first place.
Still a scam, files and sandpaper are things and do a better job anyway.

The biggest advantage of the paint cup is that I've never accidentally drunk paint water out of it.
It's also basically impossible to spill. I use mine all the time and like it a lot more than the old jar I used to use.

Good point. I love my ceramic mugs, but using the same style of mugg for your paint water and your coffee, has absolutely caused accidents.

Two things I learned from this video. 1) They can both count and do very basic addition. 2) Neither one of them knows how to pronounce Epitome.
It drives me nuts how many people pronounce it like that - but I understand, as it tends to be a word people read first before saying and then they tend to hear the other people speaking it out loud for the first time more than the real pronounciation lmao

I still love it. Do I need it? My wife uses the small painting handle but also uses prescription bottles that are weighted and some tacky putty. She also has the cup and swears by the paint brush shaping. She also made her own wet palette.
Fun fact about that assembly holder thing. The arms were originally attached to its own painting handle and was initially marketed as a bit holder for painting sub assemblies, but the arms were too weak to hold them in place for painting. Then people realized that they were useful when doing kitbashes and conversions as it could hold things in awkward angles while the glue dried, and since the jaws were weak it wouldnt damage bits like metal jaws would. So gw immediately pivoted and marketed it as such
Honestly I look at it every so often for that reason, wondering if it's worth a try.
If I was dealing with metal or resin miniatures I'd definitely buy that.
@@Ben-fk9ey In all honesty though, if you really needed this, you could find another one online with stronger arms for a lower or similar price. Even if it had metal clamps you can place something between the metal and the model to protect the plastic.
@@Ben-fk9ey For metal you really need stronger arms go with the cheap metal one with the roach clips on the end and the magnifier. Here in the US they are sold at Harbor Freight for less than 10 dollars. I am sure they are available many other places too.
My hands are very unsteady, it's very helpful to keep things in place.

I'm probably the only one who actually loves the waterpot. Despite it being plastic, it's design is super sturdy, you need to be actively trying to knock it down to spill any water at all. Plus all the little things are really nice, like the ribbed bottom to help get the color out.

The paint pot is by far the best tool for the price. It's Jarring that he hates it but loves the spray stick when you can get a paint stick and sticky tak for less than $5 to prime your minis.

Im not putting my Godhands anywhere near GW sprues. GW kits can be cut with cheap snips and cleaned with a knife coz Im painting over any stress marks. Gunpla on the other hand needs something more delicate and when Godhands are so fragile comparatively, using them on GW kits is asking for them to break early.

The GW water pot eliminates the risk of me accidentally drinking paint water, so it gets a 0/10 scam from me just based on that.
I have a washed out jam jar and a plastic tub pickle container for my water pots for that reason. I'll never accidentally drink from them but they were free.
tbh, the mug is pretty neat. the small cutout at the top makes the easy to put the brush to the side for a minute or two without it going on adventures.
For clippers I use the God Hand SPN-120 Ultimate Snips, When I picked them up they were 70USD.

When I first got into painting I heard that the Games Workshop spray painting handle was a waste of money and that just sticking your minis to cardboard was way better. After the third time, I went to the pub with spray paint stuck to my hands, I realised it might be worth getting.

The best clippers are not miniature clippers. They are electrical/wiring clippers. Take a trip to your local hardware store and look at electrical tools/wiring tools. Same exact thing for better price and quality. They are designed to repeatedly cut copper wires, so they are precise and cut like butter.
Reviews by guys doing electrical projects show you have to be picky with those if you actually want to cut wires for long.

One thing about the GW knife they didn't touch on (or maybe its just an issue they've never really run across) that I like is that, with its design, your extremely unlikely to accidentally loosen the blade and cause a potentially serious accident, since the collar (the part that tightens/loosens the collet holding the blade) is situated in the palm instead of up by the blade itself.
I wish I could see the rage that Ninjon will fly into seeing how much they liked the stupid multi-mini holder thing.

Tamiya extra thin is a scam. Buy bottles of butyl acetate and acetone, and mix in an equal ratio for Tamiya Extra Thin and their airbrush cleaner formula.

I use a plastic instant porridge pot. They’re probably about the same size as the the GW water pot. I imagine instant noodle pots would be good too.
However don’t use a paper coffee cup as after a few hours the water soon makes them turn to mush and leak. If you pick it up, it’ll disintegrate and dump all the water all over your table
The subassembly holders are very useful because you don‘t Need to drill. You cut the tip and glue the head/backpack on it. Especially in combination with the mini holder for basecoating it works great.

I will stan for the paint cup. I know there are plenty of cheaper, just as good options out there, but I love mine. The ridges might be a gimmick but I truly think they make a difference. The flared bottom makes it so stable. The brush holder on the edge is convenient. It's very durable, and it just looks really cool. If anything ever did happen to mine (which is hard to imagine apart from straight up losing it) I'd happily buy another.
The problem with the back of a hobby knife is due to its blade partial flexibility you can get stairs of dents instead of nice flush. Citadel mould remover is a great tool if you know how to use it. Only thing is the old model was better, sturdier. They totally cheaped out on a metal volume here

The clippers are even worse than you think. Went through a single box of the chaos marines combat patrol sprues and the clipper’s spring gave out making them basically unusable.
The cheaper clippers they sell, ones they sent out free with the new Combat Patrol subscription, are literally better than the expensive ones.

I bent mine on an old metal mini. Managed to bend it back though, and I was technically misusing it - just don't do that haha
If buying drills for hand drilling holes, the most important thing is you buy "split point" drill bits. They have a sharp tip, which means they won't slip off the model and they basically centre themselves (most of the time I don't need to put a preparatory dent on the model to use as a guide). A lot of drills are not made for hand drilling and thus are NOT split point, so when trying to drill by hand the drill keeps trying to wander away from where you want it.
$21 for 2 mini files.... Anyone who buys this stuff from GW should be embarrassed.
I have a mini file set from Home Depot that not only came with 10 different shaped files and varying file-teeth, a detachable handle but also a hard plastic enclosed case for $17.
The reliance on customers being morons and unearned hubris it takes to price things at GW must be next level.
I never buy any of my hobbying stuff from actual hobby companies.
to be honest I buy the GW stuff because the shop is about 100 yards away from where I work. The DIY stores are five miles out of town and with being busy most weekends getting out to them isn't much of an option. But yes the GW stuff needs to be cheaper for what it is.
The painting handles have made a big difference for me. I've learned that basically everything else aside from models and paints, it's better and cheaper to go elsewhere. I buy $3 brushes that don't curl. BBs for mixing balls are 1/3 the cost. dollar store bottles, trays, makeup brushes and tools, nail clippers. plastic cement, box cutters, nail files, toothpicks. want materials for basing? grab some rocks and grass from outside. Looks pretty realistic!
Regarding knifes. If you’re in the UK use a Swann Morton no3 handle and 10A blades. Everyone in the studio used to.
If you try using the water pot, you will change your mind. I was 100% sure it was a scam, but I got it as a gift a couple of years ago and would never go back to a glass/mug again. It will never get knocked over, it's got the bit on the top to hold your brush and the grooves are great to get paint out of the brush without damaging the bristles.

Some of these tools are things I use all the time - I have a smaller mouldline remover from the first one of the Hachette magazines, I use it all the time. I prefer it to using a file, and I really don’t like using a hobby knife, I’m far too clumsy to be trusted with a sharp blade.
The water pot is one of those things that you can do without, but once you have it it’s essential - as others have said, you’re not gonna drink your paint water if you’re using it. It’s something that I’d suggest if I was asked by someone “oh, what should I get for my nephew who paints the Warhammers?” It’s a nice little thing to give a new hobbyist for a Secret Santa if you don’t know what models they’re painting. I feel the same way about the spray stick - by no means is it essential, you can just blu-tack your models to a stick, but I just think it’s neat. It’s a nice surprise that the spray stick was so well-received in this video. (I don’t use the rubber bands on it though, I just use blu-tack).
Also, this video has reminded me that I need to get a new good quality set of clippers.

During the 80s me and my friend competed in figure painting many times, we both were avid roleplayers. Competitions were held in Fantasy Games(Finland) We both won one after another . My friend eventually was picked up by GW to paint miniatures. He moved to UK and I kinda envied him a lot, until he came back and said it was a horrible place to work.

I actually swear by the knife and painting handles. The knife is expensive yes, but I always found my hands cramping when i used the smaller pencil shaped ones. Not to mention the extra blade guard helps with cutting. as for the painting handles, I have gotten so much paint on them and they are still just as tight and easy to use as ever. They never drop the minis, and are a joy to use. Everything else I cannot see myself using, but those 2 products are 10/10 in my books.
Question, did you check if it's possible to mount non-GW blades into the knife? That handle does look really comfortable for "pushing on the back of the blade" that I do a lot when cleaning up my model kits, so being able to get a (used?) GW knife and load up high quality blades would be pretty neat.

I use a small plank with carpet tape on it. Works like a charm! The minis stick and they are easy to remove without damaging the models

These are all 10/10 just because of the price, I didn't even know they costed that much, nearly felt out of my chair. GW is insane, who buys this?
I have several GW 'tools' I collected over the years that came as part of different beginner sets. The only one I use regularly is the mini handle, it is quite nice overall. When painting in batches I still mostly use pill bottles with blue tack since I only have 1 GW handle and would not pay for something I can make for free.
Some notes I would just like to add:
1) For Tool 6, the scam boyo, I do own one, and it's almost entirely used for flight stands, long pointy things going into top heavy things, I attach the arms, glue and hold the pieces together for about 30 seconds, and then let the arms hold it for at least 3 minutes. It has significantly reduced the amount of frustration and pain I have with flight stands, and when I'm batch assembly'ing, it can actually be useful. I do combine it with the large painting handle to give the painting handle (when I'm not holding it) a wider base for the exact reason of it tipping over. 3/10 scam.
2) The paint pot is nice, simply because I have never spilled my paint water with it. Sometimes when hobbying, my desk gets filled up a bunch with stuff, I twist around in my chair and bump the mug or something or another. I have partially tipped other things I've used (especially disposable cups with water), but the really wide base basically makes sure you will never have that problem, ever again. Another thing, is having the paint pot be just a dedicated "THIS IS NOT A MUG" sign is extremely helpful. I usually have 1 or 2 mugs on my desk for coffee, tea, etc. Essentially dark pigmented drinks, and I often leave my paint pot with a dark pigmented water... I have on more than one occasion picked up my old mug and nearly attempted to drink out of it (I only partially drank out of it once, that was a long 16 hour work day and I was just trying to paint for a bit before sleeping), and it also helps to deter and stop people who DON'T hobby from messing with the mug. I thought it would be obvious that people don't touch foreign objects, but children and less than sharp adults have proven me otherwise time and time again. Finally, the ridges at the bottom make it very easy to clean brushes. Don't use it for your finer brushes, but your dry brushes and stiff bristle brushes you can absolutely use it to help clean some of the paint out. 1/10 scam.

you guys just saved me from buying the sub Assembly holder to paint heads/helmets for my black Templars. I'm just going to use a chopstick and bluetac now and see how that works,since I'm not a fan of wine.Thank you.
Been using bluetac or similar products for subassembly since I started painting a few years ago (instead of chopstick, something closer to the needle-in-cork from the video, with tac on top), as long as you let it harden before painting and don't drybrush roughly, it shouldn't fail you. Also you can easily set up a few in a row, if you need batch painting.
I can get a dozen corks in the craft section of my local dollar store for about $4 Canadian, and it costs my liver nothing.

I really like the sub-assembly holder. It's been essential for painting all the parts for my Sororitas army, but I dont pin in the assembly, I just glue it with plastic cement and it holds perfectly fine. I also can reuse it dozens of time
Yeah I’ve enjoyed it too, I even bought a second so I can have more of the little holders so handy, I also have a piece of wood with a heap of holes drilled in so I can line up my sub assemblies for batch painting
Collecting puke in the water pot is extra bad as gunk gets stuck in the tall ridges in the bottom and don't wash out especially well.
moldline remover? No no, its used to clean the inside of my paint pot lids with. Going around the groove.
The citadel mug brush cleaners ARE pretty sorry for cleaning, but I find that a few passes of my brush through them helps keep the points straight.

GW sells (or at least they did when I first started) packs that are supposed to be for getting started, but it includes a mini file, clippers, basic paints, like 2 or 3 brushes, and some other stuff for like 25 dollars back when I got it. The mini file is still my go to file and the only reason I stopped using the clippers is because I havent gotten a new army in like a year or two (we all know why), so theyve legit rusted over and I had to get new ones when I wanted to fix up some models a bit.
A lot of their tools are kinda just crash grabs, but not all of them.
Use a little bit WD40 or comparable on the clippers and they'll cut fine again. Had the same issue. A little oil works wonders.
They rusted? WTF? I own 3 clippers, two of which I haven't used for years because I bought them for cheap and replaced them with an expensive Faller one and none of them have any rust on them.
@elricdotah rust also heavily depends on where you live lmao. Most metals rust, it's insanely common for tools, that's why they make shit to counteract it.
The subassembly holder thing has actually saved my ass multiple times when working with superglue, especially with metal minis. Because that stuff sometimes takes really long to harden properly, and I'm not gonna hold something by hand for 30 minutes. It's a bit fiddly to get the arms in the right places, but once you do they do hold in place quite nicely.
If you're gonna spend money on a mold line remover just buy it from monument if you can, that thing rips and it's 12$.

Gunpla painter here! I’ve had all of my tools for around a decade and never looked back. Ever since getting into Warhammer the only thing I’ve ever purchased from GW was the water pot only because how ridiculous it was.
As someone who got into minis after years of building gunpla, I'm shocked at how high the prices are for sub-par products marketed to miniature hobbyists, minis themselves included (especially GW - their molds and prices are horrid, one dude for the price of a 1/100 MG model kit? Getting a resin printer and some STLs will put you in the green SO fast compared to buying retail plastics). Seriously, if you want superb tools at appropriate prices, just look for scale kit tools, and check on scale modelling forums/message boards for suggestions on how to outfit your workshop, rather than miniature forums. Gunpla, model kit communities (planes, tanks, etc), historic diorama builders, etc. have a lot of great suggestions, tips and insights that aren't skewed by a particular producer's overwhelming marketing (usually).
@@Bakecrusto Yep. Model builder here (horror, sci-fi, kaiju, dinosaur). I can't believe the tools marketed to mini hobby. OTOH, I hang out in the mini world because they have some great painting techniques, some interesting paints, and amazing videos showing how to do it.
The hobbies need much more cross-pollination. Share the best that each aspect has.
I dabble in gunpla (I like the chibi ones) Gonna try some of the mr hobby paints and primers here soon. They look so silky smooth on gunpla.
Also there is the little triangle paint pot holder for holding 3x paint pots. Its certainly usefull in my mind at least as you usually only use one colour at the time. If you have limited work space like me, its nice with having everything small.
The mold line remover is worth $26 if you're absolutely tired of your kid cutting themselves on a hobby knife. For the typical adult gamer, this is a completely redundant item. over the years I've learned there is almost always a cheaper alternative even for the useful items. It was fun to watch you guys try them out for us, though.
But how would the kids then learn the lesson that sharp edges draw blood?
Or. Go out and get a $3 version and it does the exact same thing.

A feature on the knife that I specifically found to be unique and good for safety is that the security nut that tightens down the blade is located in a place that if you're holding the knife as intended it doesn't come loose accidentally. The water cup has a nice little horizontal brush stand indent that is actually great too.
All those tools are such overpriced scams.
Eh. There are a 1-2 decent ones. The brush cleaner pot is actually pretty good and is an easy recommend for people who have trouble keeping their brushes in good condition. The paint handles are also good if you paint a lot of infantry or medium sized vehicles and monsters - they would all be a godsend for a Tyranids player for example.
No, the paint handle is a game changer. I hated painting got the citadel paint handle and now really enjoy Painting cause it is so much easier
Absolutely! To respond to the other two comments You don't need the citadel paint cup you can go to the dollar store or your local thrift store and buy a super cheap coffee mug. And while you're there, get some sticky blue wall tack and then you can turn any old pill bottles that you have at home into painting handles
I think there is a use for most these, but for every one there is a cheaper and/or better option.

Really like the pot ad a 3D printed brush holder and it’s even better. Plus you’ll never accidentally take a sip from it.
The Citadel Paint Cup is something ive also came around to. There were multiple situations where is bumped it, and when a normal cup would spill all over my desk, this ons just skidded along the table maybe spilling 2 drops. While i never use the side ridges, the bottom waves actually DO help a bit with cleaning the paint from the brush without jamming it into the bottom. I have to recommend it. And with $12 its actually not that bad compared to many other hobby products.
Those mold line removers suck, but I teach kids modelling. Being able to hand them a scraper that isn't a knife in any way is convenient.
I'm a jeweller so had 8t anyway but the lindstrom flush snips do a great job. The cut metal wires with a decent flat edge and do just as well with plastic, it means where the outer edge is will be the what is left.
I've literally never used a sprue cutter and I've been in this hobby for 7 years. I use a toe nail clipper for them and it works perfectly fine. (Specifically the ingrown toe nail style clippers as they are basically just a more curved looking sprue cutter and can get into hard to reach areas really easy) Not to mention they are like $10 at the dollar store/Walmart.
Anything more than 20$ for some clippers is simply outrageous to me
Mine were $8 and with just fine. As long as they have a flat edge they’re fine.

I really like the pallet pad. It has two uses - It's great as an annotateable pallet that I can keep, so I can remember exactly what colours I used during my very infrequent painting bursts, and colour match if I'm using different ranges / paints change. And then all my pallets are in one place. Yes, I paint THAT infrequently! Secondly, the pages can be glued using plastic glue, so they make great paperthin plasticard for adding panels, straps and other fine decorations to models.
That "head holding" sub-assembly tool has one good use. Spare bitz. That spike form looks like something you could use on terrain or vehicles, and you get quite a few of them too. Other than that, its absolute trash clearly.
When I saw the sprue of them, my immediate thought was "those belong on the upper sides of a Chaos Land Raider".
The best use for the assembly stand is when you have a bunch of sub-assemblies stuck to pieces of sprue the holes in the bottom of the stand can hold a bunch of pieces. I tossed the clips into a random drawer and haven't looked at them since.
I’ve been using the clippers from the starter paint set for like a year now and they’re only just getting blunt. So glad i didn’t cash out for the “fancier” ones
It's so weird too, because those starter set clippers are miles better than the "fancier" ones they're trying to sell. Like you, I have been using them pretty steadily over the past several years and only recently did they get shelved for an actual nice pair.
The $25 tamiya cutters are insanely good. Easily match a 40-50$ pair and much more durable than the god hands
Pro tip,some 800-1000 grit sand paper will sharpen it right back up.

@@JarthenGreenmeadow I used to think that, until I tried cutters in the $20-30 range. It's a completely different experience. You damage your minis way less and/or have way less clean up. There is no tension and then a snap of breaking plastic, it's a smooth buttery cut.
I've never tried HD wire cutters though, just cheap generic hobby cutters.
I'm shocked at all the mold-line remover hate. It's probably one of my most used tools when I'm building minis. I can get a little distracted, so having an alternative to a hobby knife is amazing
Likewise, I posted that I see it similar to a scrapping blade for woodwork or a burr remover in a machine shop. If you know what you are doing works much better than a hobby knife, granted you will need something for tight spaces.
I bought a lot of these ages ago when I started painting. I still use them, my clippers and moldline thingy are all metal though. That paint cup will not tip over which is an advantage for clumsy people.

Dude. I pay like 3 to 6 bucks at swap meets for electrical flush cuts and they are some of the best clippers I’ve ever found. 50 bucks for clippers? No thanks.
I use jam jars for my water pots. Doesn’t feel like a cup, is free and can be washed/diswashered like a mug/glass.

@DJEyYo i'd recommend using tamiyas airbrush cleaner instead of the extra thin cement. pretty much the same stuff but much cheaper.
For the painting handle, I just dabbed glue under the base of my squad and let them dry on an old ruler or paint stick before I gave them the old black spray can treatment. You can do a whole bunch of squads one after the other that way.

Products from wish or temu are sold for below production cost a lot of the time to encourage people to buy more, you cant say that something is a scam by comparing the price to products that are manufactured with subsidies and sold at artificially low prices to drum up business.
Almost every product made outside of china would be classified as a scam then since non Chinese companies actually are required to pay living wages and need to make a profit in order to stay in business.
The mold line remover is great when you are assembling a bunch of terrain. Fast and hard scrapes down the mold lines to quickly remove them.-

so for $5 US. you can get a needle file set from Harbour Freight with larger handles and with a large variety of shapes(flat, square, round, triangular, half round) I work with a lot of metal figures so for me they work great, but even with plastic they make cleaning edges, mold lines, and cuts so much easier.

I use the subassembly holders a lot for my Imperialis Tanks so I can batch paint them in combination with the spray stick. It's nice to be able to spray a dozen tanks without painting my fingers, and get around underneath them.
I'm two minutes in, if you're getting nippers go to the gunpla recommendations, guys in that hobby have been pushing their development for the last like 30years

That assembly stand is a pretty novel idea but there are obviously better tools that could be used for the same purpose. You could buy a soldering "helping hands" which is used to hold PCB boards while you solder components onto them. The clamp is typically metal with teeth but some kits come with rubber covers which would be excellent for minis since the rubber prevents the teeth from marring the surface of the figure. Helping hand tools are around the same price as this assembly stand and are much higher quality AND they're not going to flop around like the assembly stand in the video does.
The files are the biggest scam. You can get a whole set of needle files at any auto parts store for less. They come in multiple shapes and grades. They last forever and some sets are double ended so you get twice as many file shapes or course and fine versions.
Seriously. 22 dollars for 2 files is outrageous.
The spray stick has been excellent. I've started using tack to stick the base to the stick so I don't have to paint the spots where the rubber bands sit on the base. The paint handles have also been amazing. The mold line remover isn't worth the price, but it's nice to get my kids involved in cleaning minis, or when building their own models/Gundams, without giving them a knife.
I saw the title and went "So you just bought from GW?"
On the old handles that GW sold, for the large one, I drilled
2 minuscule holes, then I submerged it in water, first tapping it got the water in, eventually I had to suck on one of the holes to get the rest of the air out. Then I glued over the holes. Handle was heavier and bottom heavy. Still not perfect, but a lot sturdier and the extra weight wasn’t a drag on the hands.
